A Quality Future For Recreational Fishing On The West Coast., West Coast Recreational Fishing Working Group
A Quality Future For Recreational Fishing On The West Coast., West Coast Recreational Fishing Working Group
Fisheries management papers
The West Coast Region between Kalbarri and Augusta offers a wide range of recreational fishing opportunities. The West Coast Region also receives more fishing pressure than any other, with an estimated 380 000 anglers fishing each year. Already, the signs of a fishery under pressure are showing. Catch rates of dhufish around inshore reef systems such as the Three-mile are a far cry from the 1950s and 60s when people beachlaunched wooden dinghies to fish the inshore waters for these highly prized fish. Increasing pressure on stocks has led to growing community concerns that the future quality of recreational fishing is …

Pulse And Canola Frost Identification:The Back Pocket Guide, Craig White
Pulse And Canola Frost Identification:The Back Pocket Guide, Craig White
Bulletins 4000 -
This field guide will help you identify the common symptoms of frost damage in pulse and canola crops. It also contains pictures of other plant symptoms often confused with frost damage in these crops.
Frost damage reduces crop yield and grain quality. Early identification of symptoms allows timely crop salvage decisions to be made.
Inspect pulse and canola crops between bud formation and during pod growth if right air temperature (recorded 1.2 m above ground) falls below 2 degrees celsius and there was a frost.
Check low lying, light coloured soil types and known frost prone areas first. Then check …

We define a process called congealing in which elements of a dataset (images) are brought into correspondence with each other jointly, producing a data-defined model. It is based upon minimizing the summed component-wise (pixel-wise) entropies over a continuous set of transforms on the data. One of the biproducts of this minimization is a set of transform, one associated with each original training sample. We then demonstrate a procedure for effectively bringing test data into correspondence with the data-defined model produced in the congealing process. Subsequently; we develop a probability density over the set of transforms that arose from the congealing …

The paper presents selected effects of the cyclical nature of the two-stage process of medical waste incineration on the variation of concentrations of basic constituents and selected gaseous pollutants (NOx, CO, SO2, H2S and HCl) in flue gas discharged from the process. The study included the installation working in the Purotherm-Pyrolise system (waste gasification and gas afterburning) with actual yields of 100-150 kg/h. The phases of the process varied in dynamic and direction changes of the flue-gas composition and the levels of air pollutant emissions were separated and described for these phases. They can be very important for the organization …

The gas-phase structures of trans-formanilide (FA) clusters containing varying numbers of water and ammonia molecules have been investigated by resonant two-photon ionization spectroscopy in a supersonic jet expansion. A single structure is found for the 1:1 cluster of FA with ammonia in which the amide NH group functions as a hydrogen bond donor to the ammonia nitrogen. In contrast, vibronically resolved spectra reveal two distinct structures for the 1:1 cluster with water in which either the amide NH group functions as a hydrogen bond donor or the carbonyl oxygen functions as a hydrogen bond acceptor. The 1:1 clusters with both …

We report 4500 days of VRI photometry of the peculiar high‐latitude F2 Ibe star 89 (V441) Herculis, from a robotic photometric telescope, and the American Association of Variable Star Observers photoelectric photometry program. We detected the previously known photometric period of 65.2 days and also the 283 day period which was previously observed in radial velocity only and ascribed to binarity. We have determined the relative amplitudes and phases of light, color, and radial velocity for each period. The 65.2 day period appears to be due to pulsation—probably radial. The nature of the 283 day variations is unclear; we discuss …

Unintentionally doped and silicon doped GaN films prepared by molecular beam epitaxy using ammonia are investigated. Hall, secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), photoluminescence, and x-ray data are utilized for analysis of sources of autodoping of GaN epitaxial films in an effort to identify whether the n-type background electron concentration is of impurity origin or native defect origin. We identify and quantify an anomalous relationship between the Si doping concentration and free carrier concentration and mobility using temperature dependent Hall measurements on a series of 2.0-μm-thick GaN(0001) films grown on sapphire with various Si doping concentrations. SIMS is used to …
Calibration Of Optical Digital Fragmentation Measuring Systems, Norbert H. Maerz, Wei Zhou
Calibration Of Optical Digital Fragmentation Measuring Systems, Norbert H. Maerz, Wei Zhou
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Optical granulometry systems like WipFrag are required to measure fragments in situ. That is to say, the fragments are in piles where sorting takes place, where fragments are partially overlapped, and where fines may not be seen because they fall in and behind the coarser fragments, or where the fines are simply too small to be seen. As a result, optical systems tend typically to overestimate the size of the distribution, and underestimate the variability of the distribution. The wider the size distribution being measured, the more severe the problem is. This paper presents the results of a study that …

Euclidean Weights Of Codes From Elliptic Curves Over Rings, José Felipe Voloch, Judy L. Walker
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
We construct certain error-correcting codes over finite rings and estimate their parameters. For this purpose, we need to develop some tools, notably an estimate for certain exponential sums and some results on canonical lifts of elliptic curves. These results may be of independent interest.
A code is a subset of An, where A is a finite set (called the alphabet). Usually A is just the field of two elements and, in this case, one speaks of binary codes. Such codes are used in applications where one transmits information through noisy channels. By building redundancy into the code, transmitted …

A field experiment tested the effect of an Arizona civil jury reform that allows jurors to discuss evidence among themselves during the trial. Judges, jurors, attorneys, and litigants completed questionnaires in trials randomly assigned to either a Trial Discussions condition, in which jurors were permitted to discuss the evidence during trial, or a No Discussions condition, in which jurors were prohibited from discussing evidence during trial according to traditional admonitions. Judicial agreement with jury verdicts did not differ between conditions. Permitting jurors to discuss the evidence did affect the degree of certainty that jurors reported about their preferences at the …

Forensic Applications Of Capillary Electrophoresis, Jennifer A. Jakubowski
Forensic Applications Of Capillary Electrophoresis, Jennifer A. Jakubowski
Honors Theses
The separation by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) of the chiral narcotic propoxyphene is the goal of this work. A three-way collaboration between our research group, Professor lsiah Warner (LSU), and the New York State Forensic Investigation Center is underway, with the goal of separating controlled substances and developing techniques that the Forensic Center can apply in it& investigations. Earlier studies by Warner's group have shown that using polymerized N-undecylenyl-L-amino acid and peptide derivatives as pseudo-stationary phases in CZE has resulted in the separation of chiral molecules. Our separations were attempted by combining the drug samples with polymerized N-undecylenyl-L-amino acid and …
Stereoselection In The Preparation Of Alpha-Oxy-Beta-Amino Esters : Revealing The Mechanism, Richard James Fox
Stereoselection In The Preparation Of Alpha-Oxy-Beta-Amino Esters : Revealing The Mechanism, Richard James Fox
Honors Theses
Due to their significant pharmaceutical applications, the development of efficient, stereoselective synthetic routes for the preparation of α-substituted-β-amino esters has become increasingly important. We demonstrated that the titanium enolates (47) of a.alkoxy acetate esters (48) add cleanly to imines (49), and predominately afford the anti diastereomer of the a.-oxy-f3-amino ester product (50). Furthermore, by altering the electronic properties of the ether oxygen, sterics of the ester and temperature conditions, we changed the anti:syn product ratio. We rationalized the origin of these effects, and proposed a mechanism of imine addition.

Diastereoselection In Titanium Enolate Addition To Aldmines, Julia Leigh Barkin
Honors Theses
A mild and versatile synthesis of a-oxy-6-amino esters has been performed by condensation of the chlorotitanium enolates of methyl methoxyacetate with aldimines. The imine-aldol addition occurs in excellent yields without Lewis acid activation of the imine. All aryl imines examined show good to excellent diastereoselection for the anti isomers.

Fluorescence Studies Of Tris (2,2'-Bipyridine) Ruthenium (Ii) In Thin Clay Films, Samuel James Salamone
Honors Theses
Because of their rich intercalation chemistry and ability to enhance the thermal stability of the included guest, layered silicate clays are excellent hosts for the fabrication of organic/inorganic nanocomposites. Composites of hectorite and tris(2, 2' -bipyridine) ruthenium(U), Ru(bpy), 3 2+, have attracted attention owing to their potential applications as glucose and oxygen based chemical sensors. Previous studies on the fluorescence behavior of Ru(bpy)3 2+ complexes in aqueous colloidal clay suspensions have shown enhanced emission traces. We report here the first study of the fluorescence responses of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ exchanged thin clay films. Variation of guest concentration and exposure time …

A Taxonomic Evaluation Of The Comatulid Genus Stephanometra (Echinodermata:Crinoidea), Dana Lin Rankin
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Several genera in the comatulid family Mariametridae are currently ambiguously distinguished on the basis of variations in length and robustness of oral pinnules. Previous descriptions have suggested that at least the genera Stephanometra and Lamprometra are imperfectly distinguishable. A detailed re-examination of morphology coupled with principal component analyses of morphometric data and cladistic analyses provide support for a monophyletic Stephanometra distinct from Lamprometra. A preliminary morphological analysis suggests that Dichrometra and Liparometra should be synonymized with Lamprometra. The six currently recognized species of Stephanometra uniquely share at least one pair of oral pinnules characterized by enlarged size, reduced ambulacral groove …

We review the de Boer-Verlinde-Verlinde formalism for the renormalization group in the context of Dp-brane vacua for p < 5. We comment on various aspects of the dictionary between bulk and boundary and relate the discussion to the Randall-Sundrum scenario. We find that the gravitational coupling for the Randall-Sundrum gravity on the Dp-brane worldvolume is dressed by the c-function of the Yang-Mills theory. We compute the beta function and find the expected uneventful flow prescribed by the classical dimension of the Yang-Mills operator.

Fibonacci numbers arise in the solution of many combinatorial problems. They count the number of binary sequences with no consecutive zeros, the number of sequences of 1's and 2's which sum to a given number, and the number of independent sets of a path graph. Similar interpretations exist for Lucas numbers. Using these interpretations, it is possible to provide combinatorial proofs that shed light on many interesting Fibonacci and Lucas identities (see [1], [3]). In this paper we extend the combinatorial approach to understand relationships among generalized Fibonacci numbers.

Nutritional Aspects Of Trans Unsaturated Fatty Acids, Mary Cantwell
Doctoral
Dietary trans unsaturated fatty acids from hydrogenated vegetable and fish oils have been shown to raise plasma low density lipoprotein cholesterol and lower high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels at 10%, 6% and 3% of energy intake. As trans fatty acid intake has not been previously assessed in Ireland a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was developed to assess fat intake with particular focus on trans fatty acids. A nutrient database was developed which included the fatty acid and total trans fatty acid composition of foods (measured by gas chromatography and infra-red spectroscopy) which are sources of fat in the Irish diet. …

A laser based electron generator is shown, for the first time, to produce sufficient charge to conduct time resolved investigations of radiation induced chemical events. Electron pulses generated by focussing terawatt laser pulses into a supersonic helium gas jet are used to ionize liquid water. The decay of the hydrated electrons produced by the ionizing electron pulses is monitored with 0.3 µs time resolution. Hydrated electron concentrations as high as 22 µM were generated. The results show that terawatt lasers offer both an alternative to linear accelerators and a means to achieve subpicosecond time resolution for pulse radiolysis studies.
