Comparison Of Instream Methods For Measuring Hydraulic Conductivity In Sandy Streambeds, Matthew K. Landon, David L. Rus, F. Edwin Harvey Dec 2001

Comparison Of Instream Methods For Measuring Hydraulic Conductivity In Sandy Streambeds, Matthew K. Landon, David L. Rus, F. Edwin Harvey

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Streambed hydraulic conductivity (K) values were determined at seven stream transects in the Platte River Basin in Nebraska using different instream measurement techniques. Values were compared to determine the most appropriate technique(s) for use in sandy streambeds. Values of K determined from field falling- and constant-head permeameter tests analyzed using the Darcy equation decreased as permeameter diameter increased. Seepage meters coupled with hydraulic gradient measurements failed to yield K values in 40% of the trials. Consequently, Darcy permeameter and seepage meter tests were not preferred approaches. In the upper 0.25 m of the streambed, field falling- and constant-head permeameter tests …

One-Gas Models With Height-Dependent Mean Molecular Weight: Effects On Gravity Wave Propagation, R. L. Walterscheid, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D. Dec 2001

One-Gas Models With Height-Dependent Mean Molecular Weight: Effects On Gravity Wave Propagation, R. L. Walterscheid, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D.

Publications

Many models of the thermosphere employ the one-gas approximation where the governing equations apply only to the total gas and the physical properties of the gas that depend on composition (mean molecular weight and specific heats) are height-dependent. It is further assumed that the physical properties of the gas are locally constant; thus motion-induced perturbations are nil. However, motion in a diffusively separated atmosphere perturbs local values of mean molecular weight and specific heats. These motion-induced changes are opposed by mutual diffusion of the constituent gases, which attempts to restore diffusive equilibrium. Assuming that composition is locally constant is equivalent …

Pan, Ppn And Mpan Measurements And The Quantitative Relationship Of Pan And Mpan In Biogenic Hydrocarbon Conditions, Chen Wangchun Dec 2001

Pan, Ppn And Mpan Measurements And The Quantitative Relationship Of Pan And Mpan In Biogenic Hydrocarbon Conditions, Chen Wangchun

Masters Theses

Simultaneous measurements of PAN, PPN and MPAN were made during the SOS 1999 Nashville campaign at Dickson site. The PANs data at this site were rich and complex. PAN and MP AN showed obvious diurnal change but PPN did not during this period. PAN and ozone have a clear positive relationship. Due to the special location of the site, winds from different directions bring anthropogenic hydrocarbons (AHCs) or biogenic hydrocarbons (BHCs) to the site. The data showed that the influence of AHCs and BHCs on PANs compounds varied on different days. Average values of PAN/PPN and PAN/MPAN from MLR may …

Dual Heuristic Programming For Fuzzy Control, George G. Lendaris, Thaddeus T. Shannon, Larry J. Schultz, Steven Hutsell, Alec Rogers

Systems Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Overview material for the Special Session (Tuning Fuzzy Controllers Using Adaptive Critic Based Approximate Dynamic Programming) is provided. The Dual Heuristic Programming (DHP) method of Approximate Dynamic Programming is described and used to the design a fuzzy control system. DHP and related techniques have been developed in the neurocontrol context but can be equally productive when used with fuzzy controllers or neuro-fuzzy hybrids. This technique is demonstrated by designing a temperature controller for a simple water bath system. In this example, we take advantage of the TSK model framework to initialize the tunable parameters of our plant model with reasonable …

Gametogenic Cycles Of Marine Mussels, Mytilus Edulis And Mytilus Trossulus, In Cobscook Bay, Maine, Aaron P. Maloy Dec 2001

Gametogenic Cycles Of Marine Mussels, Mytilus Edulis And Mytilus Trossulus, In Cobscook Bay, Maine, Aaron P. Maloy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Mytilus edulis species complex includes three smooth-shelled blue mussels, M. edulis (Linnaeus 1 75 8), M trossulus (Gould 1 850), and M galloprovincialis (Lamarck 18 19). When any two of theses species occur sympatrically, hybridization and backcrossing of hybrid and parental genotypes is evident. Despite introgression of genes between taxa their genetic integrity is maintained. To test the hypothesis that a temporal variation in species-specific spawning times is the mechanism limiting hybridization and maintaining genetic integrity in a M edulis and M. trossulus hybrid zone in eastern Maine, mussels were sampled on monthly to semi-monthly intervals throughout 2000 from …

The Progression Of Recycling In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Susan Marklin Dec 2001

The Progression Of Recycling In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Susan Marklin

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Recycling is an important issue when dealing with solid waste. It keeps many tons of garbage out of our landfills and prolongs landfill life. Although many people in the Bowling Green area participate in the mandatory recycling program, there are still many who do not. The number of people who participate in the program has steadily grown over the past five years; however, there are still many people who need to get involved. This research argues that much effort has been put into recycling in recent years at the global, national, and local level. However, it also argues that even …

A Framework For Multilingual Information Processing, Steven Edward Atkin Dec 2001

A Framework For Multilingual Information Processing, Steven Edward Atkin

Theses and Dissertations

Recent and (continuing) rapid increases in computing power now enable more of humankind's written communication to be represented as digital data. The most recent and obvious changes in multilingual information processing have been the introduction of larger character sets encompassing more writing systems. Yet the very richness of larger collections of characters has made the interpretation and processing of text more difficult. The many competing motivations (satisfying the needs of linguists, computer scientists, and typographers) for standardizing character sets threaten the purpose of information processing: accurate and facile manipulation of data. Existing character sets are constructed without a consistent strategy …

Challenges For The New West: Economic Impacts Of Wilderness In Nevada's Rural Counties, Lesley Regina Argo Dec 2001

Challenges For The New West: Economic Impacts Of Wilderness In Nevada's Rural Counties, Lesley Regina Argo

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Public lands designated as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System are removed from multiple-use management for protection of their natural condition. Opponents argue that "locking up" the natural resources on these lands through designation will undermine the rural economies in the west that are dependent upon extractive industries such as mining and logging. Proponents argue that the "Old West" reliance on extractive industries is declining and, in the "New West", wilderness promotes economic development in rural communities by preserving the amenity values that draw population and employment to the region. Characteristics of Nevada's economy, population and land challenge the …

Ccd Photometry Of The Classic Second-Parameter Globular Clusters M3 And M13, Soo-Chang Rey, Suk-Jin Yoon, Young-Wook Lee, Brian Chaboyer, Ata Sarajedini

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present high-precision V, B-V color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) for the classic second-parameter globular clusters M3 and M13 from wide-field, deep CCD photometry. The data for the two clusters were obtained during the same photometric nights with the same instrument, allowing us to determine accurate relative ages. Based on a differential comparison of the CMDs using the Δ(B-V) method, an age difference of 1.7 ± 0.7 Gyr is obtained between these two clusters. We compare this result with our updated horizontal-branch (HB) population models, which confirm that the observed age difference can produce the …

Using Boosting To Simplify Classification Models, V. Wheway Nov 2001

Using Boosting To Simplify Classification Models, V. Wheway

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Ensemble classification techniques such as bagging, boosting and arcing algorithms have been shown to lead to reduced classification errors on unseen cases and seem immune to the problem of overfitting. Several explanations for the reduction in generalisation error have been presented, with recent authors defining and applying diagnostics such as "edge" and "margin". These measures provide insight into the behaviour of ensemble classifiers, but can they be exploited further? In this paper, a four-stage classification procedure in introduced, which is based on an extension of edge and margin analysis. This new procedure allows inverse sub-contexts and difficult border regions to …

Control Of Servo Systems In The Presence Of Motor-Load Inertia Mismatch, Jeffrey W. Moscrop, C. Cook, P. Moll Nov 2001

Control Of Servo Systems In The Presence Of Motor-Load Inertia Mismatch, Jeffrey W. Moscrop, C. Cook, P. Moll

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

There are a number of performance limiting factors that concern the designers of machine tool servo systems. One such factor is the mismatch that often exists between motor and load inertias. This paper briefly discusses the results of a previous study on the factors that interact to introduce stability problems in the presence of a high motor-load inertia mismatch. The effects of such an inertia mismatch, on servo system performance, are then discussed and analysed using closed loop frequency responses. Various methods of improving the system response using fast feedback control are presented, including traditional PI control and modern methods …

Non-Target Impacts Of Strychnine Baiting To Reduce Pocket Gopher Populations On Forest Lands In The United States, Dale L. Nolte, Kimberly Wagner Nov 2001

Non-Target Impacts Of Strychnine Baiting To Reduce Pocket Gopher Populations On Forest Lands In The United States, Dale L. Nolte, Kimberly Wagner

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Reforestation efforts are often severely hindered on sites that contain high populations of pocket gophers (Thmmysspp). Strychnine baiting is a technique used to suppress pocket gopher populations until seedlings are established. Strychnine bait is applied below ground in pocket gopher burrows, however, primary and secondary hazards remain a concern. A study to assess primary hazards indicated that some individual rodents died post strychnine baiting but there was not a long-term negative impact on non-target rodent populations. Possible secondary hazards reflect the potential for predators OT scavengers to encounter poisoned pocket gophers. Concerns that pocket gophers may surface before …

Thermal Effects On The Measurement Of Photocurrent At Anodic Films On Silver Electrode, Yuan Gu, Zhi Yu Jiang Nov 2001

Thermal Effects On The Measurement Of Photocurrent At Anodic Films On Silver Electrode, Yuan Gu, Zhi Yu Jiang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The influence of heat on the photocurrent of Ag electrode in alkaline solution was investigated by measuring photocurrent, photothermal signal and thermal current under the irraiation of laser beams with the wavelengths of 488 nm and 532 nm. It was found the photocurrent at the Ag 2O film was influenced by the temperature change at the electrode surface under the irradiation of light. During the electrochemical transfer between Ag, Ag 2O and AgO in the anodic film, the surface temperature changed obviously due to the different absorptance of the surface substances. It was suggested by comparing the voltammograms, photocurrent curves …
