Study Of Dynamics And Mechanism Of Metal-Induced Silicon Growth, Elena A. Guliants, Wayne A. Anderson Jan 2001

Study Of Dynamics And Mechanism Of Metal-Induced Silicon Growth, Elena A. Guliants, Wayne A. Anderson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The present study addresses the mechanism of metal-induced growth of device-quality silicon thin films. Si deposition was performed by magnetron sputtering on a 25-nm-thick Ni prelayer at 525–625 °C and yielded a continuous, highly crystalline film with a columnar structure. A Ni disilicide intermediate layer formed as a result of the Ni reaction with Si deposit provides a sufficient site for the Si epitaxial growth because lattice mismatch is small between the two materials. The reaction between Ni and Si was observed to progress in several stages. The NixSiy phase evolution in a Ni:Si layer was studied by x-ray photoelectron …

Photochemical Degradation Of 2,4-D And Atrazine In Well-Defined Media, Asher D. Ghertner Jan 2001

Photochemical Degradation Of 2,4-D And Atrazine In Well-Defined Media, Asher D. Ghertner

Honors Theses

Atrazine and 2,4-D are common herbicides used for crop, lawn, and rangeland management. Photochemical degradation has been proposed as one safe and efficient remediation strategy for both 2,4-D and Atrazine. In the presence of iron(llI) and hydrogen peroxide these herbicides decay by both thermal and light induced oxidation. Past studies have focused primarily on sun light as an energy source. This work provides a mechanistic description of herbicide degradation incorporating intermediate degradation products produced in the dark and under well-defined light conditions.

Seismicity And Velocity Structure Of Loihi Seamount From The 1996 Earthquake Swarm, Jacqueline Caplan-Auerbach, F. K. Duennebier Jan 2001

Seismicity And Velocity Structure Of Loihi Seamount From The 1996 Earthquake Swarm, Jacqueline Caplan-Auerbach, F. K. Duennebier

Geology Faculty Publications

The largest earthquake swarm yet recorded on Loihi submarine volcano took place in July and August of 1996. The swarm consisted of two phases of seismic activity and was associated with the formation of a pit crater and additional faulting of Loihi’s summit platform. The first phase of activity was comprised of predominantly high-frequency events scattered over the southern flanks of the volcano. Following a day of seismic quiescence, the second phase of activity began, consisting of lower-frequency earthquakes with strong T-phases. The phase 2 events took place beneath Loihi’s summit, presumably marking the formation of the pit crater, Pele’s …

The Lunar Tide In The Equatorial F Region Vertical Ion Drift Velocity, R. J. Stening, Bela G. Fejer Jan 2001

The Lunar Tide In The Equatorial F Region Vertical Ion Drift Velocity, R. J. Stening, Bela G. Fejer

Bela G. Fejer

Vertical ion drift velocity data from Jicamarca have been analyzed for a lunar semidiurnal tide using a least squares fitting method. Amplitudes of up to 6 m s−1 are obtained with phases in agreement with lunar tidal determinations of other associated physical parameters. Variations between season, solar activity, and day to night are also examined. Generally, amplitudes are larger in the southern summer. Much of the phase variation with season is very similar for solar maximum and minimum years. There is a summer to winter phase change that is most distinct at solar maximum nighttime. A day-to-night phase reversal can …

Analysis Of A Non-Replicated Split-Split Plot Experiment, Emily Simmons Sim Jan 2001

Analysis Of A Non-Replicated Split-Split Plot Experiment, Emily Simmons Sim

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A major obstacle in the analysis of experimental data, in many situations, is the lack of "true" or "complete" replication. In some disciplines, researchers are very aware of the importance of replication and the methods for correctly replicating an experiment. In other subject areas, however, researchers are less aware of what it means to properly replicate an experiment. Due to this lack of awareness, many non-replicated experiments are carried out every year. For many of these non-replicated experiments, there is no satisfactory statistical analysis.

The subject of this report is the analysis of two non-replicated experiments in environmental engineering. First, …

Gravitational Descendants And The Moduli Space Of Higher Spin Curves, Tyler J. Jarvis, Takashi Kimura, Arkady Vaintrob Jan 2001

Gravitational Descendants And The Moduli Space Of Higher Spin Curves, Tyler J. Jarvis, Takashi Kimura, Arkady Vaintrob

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this note is introduce a new axiom (called the Descent Axiom) in the theory of r-spin cohomological field theories. This axiom explains the origin of gravitational descendants in this theory. Furthermore, the Descent Axiom immediately implies the Vanishing Axiom, explicating the latter (which has no a priori analog in the theory of Gromov-Witten invariants), in terms of the multiplicativity of the virtual class. We prove that the Descent Axiom holds in the convex case, and consequently in genus zero.

Optical Bleaching In Continuous Laser Excited Photothermal Lens Spectrometry, Agnes Chartier, Stephen E. Bialkowski Jan 2001

Optical Bleaching In Continuous Laser Excited Photothermal Lens Spectrometry, Agnes Chartier, Stephen E. Bialkowski

Stephen E. Bialkowski

This paper presents methods for measuring and modeling optical bleaching that occurs, by using continuous laser sources for solution-phase organic dye molecule spectrometry. Photothermal lens experiments are used to measure the nonlinear optical absorption coefficients of eosin Y, erythrosin B, and pseudo-isocyanine iodide dyes in ethanol as a function of excitation irradiance. Excitation irradiance-dependent photothermal lens data are subsequently interpreted in terms of the photophysics and excited-state relaxation dynamics of the condensed-phase dye molecules under study. The model uses first-order kinetics for excitation and subsequent metastable-state relaxation back to the ground state and accounts for both ground- and metastable-state absorption. …

The academic research vessel fleet in the United States is embarking on a great experiment. By 2004 we will know if SWATH vessels such as the Mlo Moana and the possible built Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution coastal SWATH have such great advantages that all future vessels will be of SWATH design. Or, we will find that the two hull forms have distinct niches and the fleet will evolve with a strategic mix. Regardless of the Mure hull form research vessels will grow in size to accommodate advanced technology and the people to run and maintain it. The research vessel will …

Investigation Of Inversion Domains In Gan By Electric-Force Microscopy, K. M. Jones, P. Visconti, F. Yun, A. A. Baski, Hadis Morkoç Jan 2001

Investigation Of Inversion Domains In Gan By Electric-Force Microscopy, K. M. Jones, P. Visconti, F. Yun, A. A. Baski, Hadis Morkoç

Physics Publications

Inversion domains in III-nitride semiconductors degrade the performance of devicesfabricated in them. Consequently, it is imperative that we understand their electrostatic manifestation, the growth conditions under which such domains form, and an effective means of their identification. In what is nominally referred to as Ga-polarity samples, N-polarity domains have a polarization that is reversed with respect to the remainder of the surface, and therefore, have a different potential under strain. We have used surface-potential electric-force microscopy (SP-EFM) to image the electrostaticsurface potential of GaNgrown on sapphire, which is strained due to the thermal mismatch between the substrate and GaN. Employing …

Modal Rules Are Co-Implications, Alexander Kurz Jan 2001

Modal Rules Are Co-Implications, Alexander Kurz

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

In [13], it was shown that modal logic for coalgebras dualises—concerning definability— equational logic for algebras. This paper establishes that, similarly, modal rules dualise implications:It is shown that a class of coalgebras is definable by modal rules iff it is closed under H (images) and Σ (disjoint unions). As a corollary the expressive power of rules of infinitary modal logic on Kripke frames is characterised.

The Functionalization Of Thermally Stable Third-Order Nlo Chromophores, James Richard Sawyer Jan 2001

The Functionalization Of Thermally Stable Third-Order Nlo Chromophores, James Richard Sawyer

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

There is a need to functionalize NLO chromophore systems to incorporate them into polymeric matricies by covalent attachment. The functionalization of a series of NLO chromophores based on the N,N-diphenyl-N-[7-(2-benzothiazolyl)-9,9-diethyl-2- fluorenyl ]amine structure has been investigated. All the chromophores were synthesized from the intermediate chromophore N-phenyl-N-[4-(4-bromophenyl)phenyl ]-N-[7-(2- benzothiazolyl)-9,9-diethyl-2-fluorenyl ]amine which was prepared by a six-step process. Bromination of fluorene yielded 2,7-dibromo-fluorene which could be converted to 2,7- dibromo-9,9-diethylfluorene by alkylation with ethyl iodide in DMSO.Reaction of 2,7- dibromo-9,9-diethylfluorene with one equivalent of butyl lithium followed by reaction with DMF provides 2-bromo-7-formyl-9,9-diethylfluorene.Condensation of 2-bromo-7- formyl-9,9-diethylfluorene and 2-aminobenzenethiol in DMSO results in …

Spatial Patterns And Floodplain Contributions Of Mining-Related Contaminants In Chat Creek Watershed, Southwest Missouri, Jimmy Trimble Jan 2001

Spatial Patterns And Floodplain Contributions Of Mining-Related Contaminants In Chat Creek Watershed, Southwest Missouri, Jimmy Trimble

MSU Graduate Theses

Past mining activities have left a legacy of water quality problems in the Tri-State Mining District. Contemporary environmental risks stem from the release of lead and zinc from mine tailings previously dispersed far downstream in alluvial deposits as well as abandoned tailings piles. This study examines mining-related heavy metal contamination in the Chat Creek Watershed. Chat Creek drains the area near Aurora, Missouri on the eastern edge of the Tri-State District where mining occurred from 1886 to about 1930. This study identifies the spatial distribution of metal contamination in fluvial sediments and quantifies the role of bank erosion as a …
