OES Faculty Publications

The influence of irradiance and Fe supply on phytoplankton processes was studied, north (47°S, 142°E) and south (54°S, 142°E) of the Subantarctic Front in austral autumn (March 1998). At both sites, resident cells exhibited nutrient stress (Fv/Fm 0 at 47°S and 9% I0 at 54°S because of MLDs of 40 (47°S) and 90 m (54°S), when these stations were occupied. The greater MLD at 54°S is reflected by tenfold higher cellular chlorophyll a levels in the resident phytoplankton. In the 47°S experiment, chlorophyll a levels increased to >1 μg/L-1 only in the high-Fe treatments, regardless …

The Effect Of Spectral Composition On The Photochemical Production Of Hydrogen Peroxide In Lake Water, Andrea Y. L. Wong, George T. F. Wong Jan 2001

The Effect Of Spectral Composition On The Photochemical Production Of Hydrogen Peroxide In Lake Water, Andrea Y. L. Wong, George T. F. Wong

OES Faculty Publications

Hydrogen peroxide was produced when samples of lake water were exposed to direct or filtered sunlight in which UV or UV(B+C) light was selectively removed. In all cases, the concentration of hydrogen peroxide increased linearly with time-integrated irradiance. While both visible and UV light can induce the formation of hydrogen peroxide, the contribution from the latter was disproportionately large as it was responsible for about two-thirds of the formation of hydrogen peroxide. Among the UV lights, the contributions from UV-A and UV-(B+C) light were 70% and 30% respectively. The contribution from UV-A light was equivalent to about one half of …

Integrated Noxious Weed Management After Wildfires, Natural Resources Conservation Service Jan 2001

Integrated Noxious Weed Management After Wildfires, Natural Resources Conservation Service

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The ecosystems of the west are adapted to a long history of wildland fires that varied in frequency and severity. Over the last 100 years or more, though, fire suppression efforts, human settlement patterns and other land use practices have changed the composition and structure of the forests and grasslands of the West. Where once we typically had periodic low-intensity fires of low severity, we now experience damaging fires that can be both intense and severe. Severe fires can substantially affect the environment. Lack of vegetation on burned hillsides increases the likelihood of flooding and soil erosion from rain and …

Corba: A Quantitative And Qualitative Comparison Of Industrial Strength, Commercial Corba Orbs For The Java Platform, Michelle Leigh Mckeller

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In distributed systems design, middleware is a key component. Middleware establishes the communication between a client and server in a multi-tiered architecture. One approach to middleware is implementing the OMG's CORBA standard, through the use of ORBs. Three of the more popular commercially available ORBs are Sun's Java 2 ORB, Borland's VisiBroker for Java, and IONA's Orbix 2000 for Java. The purpose of this graduate project was to compare the three ORBs both quantitatively and qualitatively. The project compares the ORBs quantitatively by measuring the performance of each ORB, in terms of response time. The comparison was done qualitatively by …

Assessment Of Metals Pollution In Sediments Of The Coastal Area, U.A.E, By Nawal Mubarak Al Qubaisi

Theses

The present study aims at the quantifying and assessment of heavy metals concentrations and pollution in the offshore sediments, off Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah. Thirty three samples were collected and subjected to grain size analysis, organic carbon and total carbonate determinations, mineralogical analysis and heavy metals (leachable and residual phasis) determination.

The contents of organic carbon of the study areas vary within a wide range. The maximum was recorded at Abu Dhabi and the minimum at Dubai. There is a trend of increasing organic carbon with the decrease of grain size. In contrast to organic carbon, carbonate contents in …

A Pebble Count Comparison And Rock Magnetism Provenance Study Of Sumas Outwash, Jeff Laub Jan 2001

A Pebble Count Comparison And Rock Magnetism Provenance Study Of Sumas Outwash, Jeff Laub

WWU Graduate School Collection

The Sumas Stade, the last of the Fraser Glaciation advances, occurred between 12,000 and 10,000 14C years B.P. This study combines previous mapping (Easterbrook, 1976; Haugerud, written communication, 1999) with three new tests to establish a chronology for events of the Sumas Stade. Comparison of compositions of pebbles from Sumas outwash using multivariate statistics such as hierarchical clustering and k-means clustering revealed three major groups of late Sumas outwash and one earlier deposit. Magnetic susceptibility and Curie temperature analysis determined a general British Columbia provenance for the Sumas outwash. Flow direction measurements substantiated this determination. Taken together, these tests …

Glass Transition Behavior Of Pmma Thin Films, Moses T. Kabomo, Frank D. Blum Jan 2001

Glass Transition Behavior Of Pmma Thin Films, Moses T. Kabomo, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the last decade there has been an increased interest in the study of the properties of supported thin polymer films. This has been prompted by the incorporation of thin films into device applications and many other technologies. Although not without controversy, a large body of experimental work indicates departures from bulk behavior by thin films. Strong evidence from both theoretical and experimental work shows that the interaction of polymer with a substrate alters the polymer conformation and mobility. A variety of techniques has been employed to probe the mobility of thin supported polymer films. Some of these techniques indirectly …

Thermal Analysis Of Ultrathin Ps-R-Pmma Copolymer Films On Silica, Bing Zhang, Frank D. Blum Jan 2001

Thermal Analysis Of Ultrathin Ps-R-Pmma Copolymer Films On Silica, Bing Zhang, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Composite materials represent a major part of man-made materials that are used in many applications. The interaction of polymers with surfaces plays a crucial role in the final properties of these materials and, by understanding the surface processes and adsorption mechanisms, better systems can be designed. Therefore, the behavior of polymer molecules at interfaces has been the topic of many studies in recent years and a rough picture has been obtained. Keddie et al. Obtained experimental results showing the dependence of the glass transition temperature (Tg) on the thickness of supported polystyrene films using ellipsometry. Later, they also investigated supported …

Eddy Structures Induced Within A Wedge By A Honing Circular Arc, C. P. Hills Jan 2001

Eddy Structures Induced Within A Wedge By A Honing Circular Arc, C. P. Hills

Articles

In this paper we outline an expeditious numerical procedure to calculate the Stokes flow in a corner due to the rotation of a scraping circular boundary. The method is also applicable to other wedge geometries. We employ a collocation technique utilising a basis of eddy (similarity) functions introduced by Moffatt (1964) that allows us to satisfy automatically the governing equations for the streamfunction and all the boundary conditions on the surface of the wedge. The circular honing problem thereby becomes one-dimensional requiring only the satisfaction of conditions on the circular boundary. The advantage of using the Moffatt eddy functions as …

Eddies Induced In Cylindrical Containers By A Rotating End Wall, Christopher Hills Jan 2001

Eddies Induced In Cylindrical Containers By A Rotating End Wall, Christopher Hills

Articles

The flow generated in a viscous liquid contained in a cylindrical geometry by a rotating end wall is considered. Recent numerical and experimental work has established several distinct phases of the motion when fluid inertia plays a significant role. The current paper, however, establishes the nature of the flow in the thus far neglected low Reynolds number regime. Explicitly, by employing biorthogonality relations appropriate to the current geometry, it is shown that a sequence of exponentially decaying eddies extends outward from the rotating end wall. The cellular structure is a manifestation of the dominance of complex eigensolutions to the homogeneous …

Magnetic And Calorimetric Studies On The Non-Linear Optical Material Ga1-Xmnxs, Melissa Duffy

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The new layered III-VI Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors (DMS) are 2-D systems containing transition metal ions (e.g. Mn, Fe, Co, etc.) in a III-VI semiconducting host (e.g. GaSe, GaS, etc.). The III-VI DMS Ga1-xMnxSe exhibits a strong red emission at 1.804 eV attributed to the Mn ions. The III-VI semiconductors are known for their remarkable nonlinear optical properties and are promising materials for photoelectronic applications. This work also complements the enormous progress in the II-VI DMS and the more recent efforts in the Mn doped III-V DMS systems. In a manuscript published last summer, Pekerak et al present magnetization data on …

Grading The General Chemistry Laboratory: A Constructivist Approach., Barbara Stewart Jan 2001

Grading The General Chemistry Laboratory: A Constructivist Approach., Barbara Stewart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Constructivist theories of learning posit that instructors cannot transfer their knowledge to students; students must actively construct their own understanding. The Inter-Chem-Net project uses technology and instrumentation to provide an individualized experience within the large general laboratory course, effectively establishing a constructivist methodology. A grading rubric was developed to communicate course expectations and provide an easy and reliable method of evaluating student work in the general chemistry laboratory. The grading rubric separates the learning outcomes into a checklist of skills associated with each particular grade. This checklist provides detailed feedback for individualized choices of experiments, a key component of the …

Asynchronous Validity Resolution In Sequentially Consistent Shared Virtual Memory, Jonathan Thomas Jan 2001

Asynchronous Validity Resolution In Sequentially Consistent Shared Virtual Memory, Jonathan Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Shared Virtual Memory (SVM) is an effort to provide a mechanism for a distributed system, such as a cluster, to execute shared memory parallel programs. Unfortunately, SVM has performance problems due to its underlying distributed architecture. Recent developments have increased performance of SVM by reducing communication. Unfortunately this performance gain was only possible by increasing programming complexity and by restricting the types of programs allowed to execute in the system. Validity resolution is the process of resolving the validity of a memory object such as a page. Current SVM systems use synchronous or deferred validity resolution techniques in which user …

Optical Studies Of Layered Inorganic Solids: A Novel Phase Transition And Energy Transfer Studies., Christie L. Larochelle Jan 2001

Optical Studies Of Layered Inorganic Solids: A Novel Phase Transition And Energy Transfer Studies., Christie L. Larochelle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The optical properties of a group of dicyanoargentates(1) and dicyanoaurates( 1) have been studied. The samples include K2Na[Ag(CN)2I3, Tb[Ag(CN)2]3, Tb[Au(CN)2I3 and a series of compounds of the form Tb,Lal-,[Ag(CN)2]3 with x=0.001, 0.01 and 0.1. Additionally, a novel type of silver-gold mixed- metal sample (L~[A~,Au~-,(CN)~]~ with x=0.9 and 0.5) was synthesized and characterized. The compound K2Na[Ag(CN)2I3 has earlier been shown to exhibit a phenomenon known as luminescence thermochromism, whereby only one emission band is present at very low temperatures and very high temperatures, but a second, lower energy band is also present at intermediate temperatures. This prompted further investigation to explain …

Serological Responses Of Coyotes To Two Commercial Rabies Vaccines, Frederick F. Knowlton, Marianna Roetto, Deborah Briggs Jan 2001

Serological Responses Of Coyotes To Two Commercial Rabies Vaccines, Frederick F. Knowlton, Marianna Roetto, Deborah Briggs

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Between August 1993 and September 1994 we documented serological responses of coyotes (Canis latrans) vaccinated with two commercial rabies vaccines licensed for use in domestic dogs. Serologic responses were documented by testing for rabies virus neutralizing antibodies with the rapid fluorescent focus inhibition test (RFFIT) at 30, 90, 180, 270, and 365 days post-vaccination. All coyotes vaccinated with Imrab 3® (Rhone-Merieux, Inc.), and 75% of those vaccinated with Dura-Rab 3® (Immunovet, Inc.) seroconverted, as evidenced by the presence of antirabies antibody titers ≥1:5 in one or more of the five post-vaccination samples. The percent of coyotes …

So You Want To Work With Wolves?, John A. Shivik Jan 2001

So You Want To Work With Wolves?, John A. Shivik

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Growing up with three older sisters was a bit like being raised by wolves. One of their favorite games was called “stop hitting yourself.” To play, I was immobilized, and then with my arms overpowered, I was forced to repeatedly pummel my own noggin while they uttered the name of the game. Watching yourself hit yourself, feeling the pain and humiliation, yet being unable to stop is somewhat like being a federal biologist working with wolves. I’ve learned humility from my experiences but also formed the opinion that if you want to work with wolves, first consider medication; if that …

Non-Target Hazard Assessment Of Using Drc-1339 Avicide To Manage Blackbirds In Sunflower, John D. Eisemann, George M. Linz, John J. Johnston Jan 2001

Non-Target Hazard Assessment Of Using Drc-1339 Avicide To Manage Blackbirds In Sunflower, John D. Eisemann, George M. Linz, John J. Johnston

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Terrestrial hazard assessments were conducted for the spring blackbird baiting program to protect sunflower crops. Risk Assessment methodology proposed by the Ecological Committee on FIFRA Risk Assessment Methods (ECOFRAM) and the method currently used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (LD50s/ft2) were compared for their predictive strengths and for the ease of adapting the assessment to site specific conditions. While the ECOFRAM and LD50s/ft2 methods identified the same groups of organisms as being at risk, the flexibility of the ECOFRAM methodology allowed more latitude in adapting the assessment to unique behaviors of individual …

Estimation Of Red-Winged Blackbird Mortality From Toxic Bait Application, James F. Glahn, Michael L. Avery Jan 2001

Estimation Of Red-Winged Blackbird Mortality From Toxic Bait Application, James F. Glahn, Michael L. Avery

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Application of slow-acting toxic bait is one method of reducing local populations of depredating blackbirds. Estimating numbers of birds killed in such baiting operations is difficult because affected birds die off-site and are seldom recovered. We conducted bioassays and flight pen studies of red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) with a slow-acting, toxic brown rice bait to determine whether bird mortality could be predicted accurately using the Poisson and binomial discrete probability distributions. Bioassays confirmed that brown rice treated with 2% (w/w) 2-chloro-p-acetotoluidide was effective as a 1-particle lethal bait for redwings. Within a 0.2-ha flight pen, we offered this …
