Online databases containing geographic and related tabular data for maps and attributes often require continuous updates from widely distributed sources afield. For some applications, these data are dynamic, and thus are of little value if they do not reflect the latest information or changes. A status map that depicts graphically temporal data affecting accountability is an example of this type of data. A systematic study of the magnetic moments and hyperfine interactions of the LaNi_5-xFe_x compounds was performed using the spin-polarized tight-binding-linear-muffin-tin-orbital methods (TBLMTO). The calculated results were compared with neutron diffraction and Mössbauer experimental data and found to be in good agreement. Fe atoms exhibit more localized magnetic moments in LaNi_5-xFe_x when the Fe content x is lower than 1.0. The calculated magnetic moments of the Fe atoms approach values as large as 2.5μ_B due to the dilution effect. The strong s-d hybridization between the Ni and La atoms and the neighboring Fe in …

The binding of transcription factor ATF-1 to DNA contributes to gene expression and regulation of cell growth. Antibody Mab41.4, raised against ATF-1, and its derivatives Fab41.4 and scFv41.4 inhibit specific DNA binding in vitro and induce apoptotic death of tumor cells in vivo. Structural studies of Fab41.4 were performed to gain insight into the mechanism of action of this potentially therapeutic antibody. The optimal conditions for crystallization of Fab41.4 were determined. Crystals were needle-like in appearance, displayed C2 space-group symmetry and diffracted to a resolution of 1.6 Å. A study of the v̄-jet mass spectrum in e+p→v̄X events at a center-of-mass energy 300 GeV has been performed with the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider at DESY using an integrated luminosity of 47.7 pb-1. The mass spectrum is in good agreement with that expected from standard model processes over the v̄-jet mass range studied. No significant excess attributable to the decay of a narrow resonance is observed. By using both e+p→>e+X and e+p-vX data, mass-dependent limits are set on the s-channel production of scalar and vector resonant states. The production and semi-leptonic decay of heavy quarks have been studied in the photoproduction process e+p → e+ + dijet + e- + X with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.5 pb-1. Events with photon-proton centre-of-mass energies, Wγp, between 134 and 269 GeV and a photon virtuality, Q2, less than 1 GeV2 were selected requiring at least two jets of transverse energy Ejet1(2)T > 7(6) GeV and an electron in the final state. Nitrate is a worldwide contaminant that causes environmental (eutrophication) and human health (methemoglobinemia, cancers) concerns. Very few techniques are available to eliminate it from natural environment and they suffer from major drawbacks, such as production of unwanted byproducts (toxins or brine). The electrochemical reduction of nitrate on any electrode is relatively slow and catalysts or electron mediators are needed. The goal of this project was to develop a new process that could overcome these disadvantages. The data inventory developed for the Shoreline Situation Reports are based on a three-tiered shoreline assessment approach. This assessment characterizes conditions in the shorezone observed from a small boat moving along the shoreline. Handheld GPS units record data observations in the field. The three tiered shoreline assessment approach divides the shorezone into three regions:

1. the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use

2. the bank, evaluated for height, stability and natural protection

3. the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes.

An experiment was conducted to determine if a decrease in the content of sulfides related to denitrification could be measured in the laboratory using sediments of the Elk Valley Aquifer in eastern North Dakota. The experiment entailed analyzing sediments for sulfides and solid organic carbon and isolating them in sample containers with a nitrate solution to determine if a measurable decrease in these components could be observed.

Previous denitrification studies in the Elk Valley Aquifer showed an increase in sulfate in conjunction with a decrease in the concentration of nitrate. Sulfate is a by product of autotrophic denitrification where sulfide …

The present paper presents a thermodynamic approach to assess the quality of human-thermal environment interaction and quantify thermal comfort. The approach involves development of entropy generation term by applying second law of thermodynamics to the combined human-environment system. The entropy generation term combines both human thermal physiological responses and thermal environmental variables to provide an objective measure of thermal comfort. The original concepts and definitions form the basis for establishing the mathematical relationship between thermal comfort and entropy generation term. Riparian vegetation can trap sediment and nutrients coming from hillslopes and reduce stream bank erosion. This study presents results from a 10 year stream monitoring program in a small agricultural catchment near Albany, Western Australia. In 1996, a 1.6 km stream reach was fenced, planted with eucalyptus species and managed separately from the adjacent paddocks. Stream flow, nutrient and sediment concentration data were collected at the downstream end of the fenced riparian area between 1991 and 2000, so there are data for the “before” and “after” riparian management periods. The reaction e^→pe′K⁺Λ(1520) with Λ(1520)→p′K⁻ was studied at electron beam energies of 4.05, 4.25, and 4.46 GeV, using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The cos θ_K+, φ_K+, Q², and W dependencies of Λ(1520) electroproduction are presented for the kinematic region 0.9 < Q² < 2.4 GeV² and 1.95 < W < 2.65 GeV. Also, the Q² dependence of the Λ(1520) decay angular distribution is presented for the first time. The cosθ_K+ angular distributions suggest t-channel diagrams dominate the production process. Fits to the Λ(1520) t-channel helicity frame decay angular distributions indicate the m …

New cross sections for the reaction ep → ep η are reported for total center of mass energy W = 1.5-1.86 GeV and invariant momentum transfer Q² = 0.25-1.5 (GeV/c)². This large kinematic range allows extraction of important new information about response functions, photocouplings, and etaN coupling strengths of baryon resonances. Newly observed structure at W ~ 1.65 GeV is shown to come from interference between S and P waves and can be interpreted with known resonances. Improved values are derived for the photon coupling amplitude for the S₁₁(1535) resonance.

We studied the exclusive reaction ep → e' p' ᵠ using the ᵠ →K⁺K^- decay mode. The data were collected using a 4.2 GeV incident electron beam and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Our experiment covers the range in Q² from 0.7 to 2.2 GeV²and W from 2.0 to 2.6 GeV. Taken together with all previous data, we find a consistent picture of ᵠ production on the proton. The Cretaceous Two Medicine Formation of northwestern Montana has yielded blocky, calcareous coprolites that contain abundant fragments of conifer wood and were produced by large herbivorous dinosaurs. The coprolites are generally dark gray to black in color due to a dark substance confined chiefly within what originally were the capillaries of tracheid and ray cells of xylem. This substance is a kerogen which consists in part of thin-walled vesicles 0.1-1.3 µm in diameter. Pyrolysis products of this kerogen are diagnostic of a bacterial origin with a possible contribution from terrestrial plants. The vesicular component is interpreted as the residue of …

The increasing practice of industrial-scale agriculture tends to concentrate large masses of animal waste in relatively compact areas, potentially leading to excessive release of polluting nutrients into waterways during major storms. Anaerobic treatment conditions are generally favored to conserve nitrate N as an agricultural commodity. However, overall N contents in waste are often in excess of crop fertilization needs: storing excess N in soluble nitrate form increases pollution potential. Thus the perceived needs of agriculture and society-at-large become at odds. Organic nitrogen forms (e.g., proteins) are more environmentally stable and are less subject to unintentional release. The concentration of a pollutant in an air mass and the concentration of that pollutant in a series of rain water samples from a single event within that air mass, fluctuate during the course of the event. This the result of scavenging, diffusion, and advection processes. A simple mathematical model, containing only a scavenging term has had limited success in describing changes of concentration in rain water. To study the mechanism of electronic transduction along (poly)phenylene chains, a series of aromatic donors with general formula D–B–D has been synthesized [where D = 2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylphenyl donor and B = (poly)phenylene bridge]; and the corresponding cation–radical salts D–B–D⁺˙ SbCl₆⁻ have been isolated for X-ray crystallographic analyses. The magnitude of the electronic interaction between the D and D⁺˙ moieties through the various B bridges has been measured (i) as the difference between the first and the second oxidation potentials of D–B–D donors and (ii) as the structural changes induced in neutral D by the presence …

The reaction of nitrite with ferric and ferrous porphyrins was examined using visible, infrared and NMR spectroscopy. Solutions of either ferric or ferrous porphyrin were stable in the presence of nitrite, with only complexation reactions being observed. Under voltammetric conditions, though, a rapid reaction between nitrite and iron porphyrins was observed to form the nitrosyl complex, Fe(p)(NO), where P = porphyrin. The products of the reduction of ferric porphyrins in the presence of nitrite were confirmed by visible spectroelectrochemistry to be Fe(P)(NO) and [Fe(P)]2O. Visible, NMR and infrared spectroscopy were used to rule out the formation of Fe(P)(NO) by the …

Cross-linking of polymers is frequently presumed to enhance the thermal stability of polymer systems. Methyl methacrylate has been reacted with divinylbenzene and styrene with various dimethacrylates. These systems have been characterized by gel content, swelling ratio, infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis, TGA/FT-IR, and solid state NMR. Both systems show enhanced thermal stability and char formation. This is most pronounced in the cases of methyl methacrylate with divinylbenzene and styrene with bisphenol A dimethacrylate.

White Dwarfs In Open Clusters: New Tests Of Stellar Evolution And The Age Of The Galaxy, Ted Von Hippel

Publications

White dwarf cooling theory and very deep observations in star clusters provide a new tool to test stellar evolution theory and time scales. In particular, white dwarf cooling theory is now testing the degree of enhanced core mixing in stars with turnoff ages of 1 to 2 Gyr. More generally, I show the good overall agreement between white dwarf and modern isochrone ages over the range 0.1 to 4 Gyr.

A taxonomy of knowledge processing tools, machines, or systems is offered. Major possibilities for future achievements that the author would like to underline are listed with emphasis on agent technology, agent-directed simulation, holonic agents, holonic-agent simulation, and contribution of system theories for cognitive abilities such as understanding, learning, adaptation, and anticipation in computerization.
