On The Lebesgue Measure Of Self-Affine Sets, İbrahi̇m Kirat
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
Flaherty and Wang studied Haar-type multiwavelets and multi-tiles. The information on what digit sets give multi-attractors with positive Lebesgue measure is very limited. In this note, we give a few classes of digit sets leading to multi-attractors with positive measure. The attractors we obtain include the Haar-type multi-tiles of Flaherty and Wang.

The Renner Monoids And Cell Decompositions Of The Classical Algebraic Monoids, Zhenheng Li
The Renner Monoids And Cell Decompositions Of The Classical Algebraic Monoids, Zhenheng Li
Digitized Theses
The Renner monoids, cross section lattices and cell decompositions of the classical algebraic monoids are studied.
The Renner monoid is extremely important in the theory of reductive algebraic monoids. It is well know that the Renner monoid [Special characters omitted.] of Mn (K ) is the monoid of all zero-one matrices which have at most one entry equal to one in each row and column, i.e., [Special characters omitted.] consists of injective partial maps on a set of n elements. We obtain that the Renner monoids of the symplectic algebraic monoids and special orthogonal algebraic monoids turn out …

Ranked Set Sampling From Location-Scale Families Of Symmetric Distributions, Ram C. Tiwari, Paul H. Kvam
Ranked Set Sampling From Location-Scale Families Of Symmetric Distributions, Ram C. Tiwari, Paul H. Kvam
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
Statistical inference based on ranked set sampling has primarily been motivated by nonparametric problems. However, the sampling procedure can provide an improved estimator of the population mean when the population is partially known. In this article, we consider estimation of the population mean and variance for the location-scale families of distributions. We derive and compare different unbiased estimators of these parameters based on independent replications of a ranked set sample of size n. Large sample properties, along with asymptotic relative efficiencies, help identify which estimators are best suited for different location-scale distributions.

Chemically Accurate Conformational Energies For Aziridine-2-Carbonitrile, Gregory S. Tschumper
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The energy of trans-aziridine-2-carbonitrile relative to cis-aziridine-2-carbonitrile was determined by carrying out extensive ab initio computations. The coupled cluster technique was used to determine the higher order computations, that includes perturbative estimate of the triple excitations. The electronic energy of the transition structure connecting the two conformers was determined to be 77.15 kJ/mol higher than the cis-isomer.

Despite previous intensive ground-based imaging and spectroscopic campaigns and wideband Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of the z = 0.927 QSO 3C 336 field, the galaxy that hosts the damped Lyα system along this line of sight has eluded detection. We present a deep narrowband Hα image of the field of this zabs = 0.656 damped Lyα absorber, obtained through the F108N filter of NICMOSI on board the HST. The goal of this project was to detect any Hα emission 10 times closer than previous studies to unveil the damped absorber. We do not detect Hα emission between 0".05 and …

Reasoning Of Young Adults And Introductory Physics: What’S The Connection?, Vicki L. Plano Clark
Research in Physics Education Group
Moshman's discussion in his chapter from the Handbook of Child Psychology (1998) is very relevant to my work with young adults at UNL and to my interests in physics education. While there are many possible topics upon which I could write in this essay, one statement from this chapter in particular resonated with me and will serve as the starting point of my essay. This statement was as follows (emphasis added):
"Legal thinking may be defined as thinking aimed at determining what the law requires or forbids. It is often argued that legal education should be aimed at teaching a …

Inventory Of Parks Division Lands For Threatened And Endangered Species Habitats And Exemplary Natural Communities, Steven B. Rolfsmeier
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
The Nebraska Natural Heritage Program is responsible for environmental review of state projects, including those on Parks division properties, to determine if they may impact state-listed threatened and endangered species. In addition, the Program maintains a statewide database on natural communities and rare and imperiled species. This information is used to inform conservation decision-making, including land management decisions, with a goal of conserving Nebraska’s flora and fauna, our natural legacy. The two main objectives of this inventory project were first to improve the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s knowledge of threatened and endangered species and their potential habitat on Parks …
A Multigrid Method For Elliptic Grid Generation Using Compact Schemes, Balaji S. Iyangar
A Multigrid Method For Elliptic Grid Generation Using Compact Schemes, Balaji S. Iyangar
Doctoral Dissertations
Traditional iterative methods are stalling numerical processes, in which the error has relatively small changes from one iteration to the next. Multigrid methods overcome the limitations of iterative methods and are computationally efficient. Convergence of iterative methods for elliptic partial differential equations is extremely slow. In particular, the convergence of the non-linear elliptic Poisson grid generation equations used for elliptic grid generation is very slow. Multigrid methods are fast converging methods when applied to elliptic partial differential equations. In this dissertation, a non-linear multigrid algorithm is used to accelerate the convergence of the non-linear elliptic Poisson grid generation method. The …

This curriculum guide is for grades four through six. It examines how wetlands, wildlife, and people interact and depend upon each other. The San Jacinto Valley wetland area is used as an example of wetland habitat destruction from population pressures that have changed the natural landscape. It is also used as an example of what habitat reconstruction can do to restore vital habitats. Through student contact with the wetlands increased awareness of the fragile interrelationships between the physical and biological components of a wetland habitat is gained. Students can use ecological themes to help them assimilate collected and given data …
The Extraction Of Classification Rules And Decision Trees From Independence Diagrams, Robert W. Kerbs
The Extraction Of Classification Rules And Decision Trees From Independence Diagrams, Robert W. Kerbs
CCE Theses and Dissertations
Databases are growing exponentially in many application domains. Timely construction of models that represent identified patterns and regularities in the data facilitate the prediction of future events based upon past performance. Data mining can promote this process through various model building techniques. The goal is to create models that intuitively represent the data and perhaps aid in the discovery of new knowledge.
Most data mining methods rely upon either fully-automated information-theoretic or statistical algorithms. Typically, these algorithms are non-interactive, hide the model derivation process from the user, require the assistance of a domain expert, are application-specific, and may not clearly …

Dynamic Update Techniques For Online Maps And Attributes Data, Thanh H. Pham
Dynamic Update Techniques For Online Maps And Attributes Data, Thanh H. Pham
CCE Theses and Dissertations
Online databases containing geographic and related tabular data for maps and attributes often require continuous updates from widely distributed sources afield. For some applications, these data are dynamic, and thus are of little value if they do not reflect the latest information or changes. A status map that depicts graphically temporal data affecting accountability is an example of this type of data. How can accommodations be made collectively for the perpetual data updates in the database and the need to deliver online information in real time without making concessions? The goal of the dissertation was to analyze and evaluate techniques …

A systematic study of the magnetic moments and hyperfine interactions of the LaNi5-xFex compounds was performed using the spin-polarized tight-binding-linear-muffin-tin-orbital methods (TBLMTO). The calculated results were compared with neutron diffraction and Mössbauer experimental data and found to be in good agreement. Fe atoms exhibit more localized magnetic moments in LaNi5-xFex when the Fe content x is lower than 1.0. The calculated magnetic moments of the Fe atoms approach values as large as 2.5μB due to the dilution effect. The strong s-d hybridization between the Ni and La atoms and the neighboring Fe in …

The binding of transcription factor ATF-1 to DNA contributes to gene expression and regulation of cell growth. Antibody Mab41.4, raised against ATF-1, and its derivatives Fab41.4 and scFv41.4 inhibit specific DNA binding in vitro and induce apoptotic death of tumor cells in vivo. Structural studies of Fab41.4 were performed to gain insight into the mechanism of action of this potentially therapeutic antibody. The optimal conditions for crystallization of Fab41.4 were determined. Crystals were needle-like in appearance, displayed C2 space-group symmetry and diffracted to a resolution of 1.6 Å. The unit-cell parameters were determined to be a = 186.64, b = …

A study of the v̄-jet mass spectrum in e+p→v̄X events at a center-of-mass energy 300 GeV has been performed with the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider at DESY using an integrated luminosity of 47.7 pb-1. The mass spectrum is in good agreement with that expected from standard model processes over the v̄-jet mass range studied. No significant excess attributable to the decay of a narrow resonance is observed. By using both e+p→>e+X and e+p-vX data, mass-dependent limits are set on the s-channel production of scalar and vector resonant states. Couplings to first-generation quarks are considered and limits are …

The production and semi-leptonic decay of heavy quarks have been studied in the photoproduction process e+p → e+ + dijet + e- + X with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.5 pb-1. Events with photon-proton centre-of-mass energies, Wγp, between 134 and 269 GeV and a photon virtuality, Q2, less than 1 GeV2 were selected requiring at least two jets of transverse energy Ejet1(2)T > 7(6) GeV and an electron in the final state. The electrons were identified by employing the ionisation energy loss measurement. The contribution of beauty quarks was determined using the transverse momentum of …
The Coupling Of Biotechnology With Electrochemistry: Electrodenitrification Of Water Using The Enzyme Nitrate Reductase, Cyril Geyer
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Nitrate is a worldwide contaminant that causes environmental (eutrophication) and human health (methemoglobinemia, cancers) concerns. Very few techniques are available to eliminate it from natural environment and they suffer from major drawbacks, such as production of unwanted byproducts (toxins or brine). The electrochemical reduction of nitrate on any electrode is relatively slow and catalysts or electron mediators are needed. The goal of this project was to develop a new process that could overcome these disadvantages. The project demonstrates the feasibility of using an enzyme, nitrate reductase, and a mediator, methyl viologen to transfer the electrons from the electrode to nitrate, …

Gis Data: King William County Shoreline Situation Report, Marcia Berman, Harry Berquist, Sharon Dewing, J. B. Glover, Carl Hershner, Tamia Rudnicky, Daniel E. Schatt, Kevin Skunda
Data
The data inventory developed for the Shoreline Situation Reports are based on a three-tiered shoreline assessment approach. This assessment characterizes conditions in the shorezone observed from a small boat moving along the shoreline. Handheld GPS units record data observations in the field. The three tiered shoreline assessment approach divides the shorezone into three regions:
-
the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use
-
the bank, evaluated for height, stability and natural protection
-
the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes.
Three GIS coverages are generated from the collection technique. The KW_lubc coverage are features related …

Laboratory Denitrification Using Sediments From The Elk Valley Aquifer, Alison E. Kammer
Theses and Dissertations
An experiment was conducted to determine if a decrease in the content of sulfides related to denitrification could be measured in the laboratory using sediments of the Elk Valley Aquifer in eastern North Dakota. The experiment entailed analyzing sediments for sulfides and solid organic carbon and isolating them in sample containers with a nitrate solution to determine if a measurable decrease in these components could be observed.
Previous denitrification studies in the Elk Valley Aquifer showed an increase in sulfate in conjunction with a decrease in the concentration of nitrate. Sulfate is a by product of autotrophic denitrification where sulfide …

The present paper presents a thermodynamic approach to assess the quality of human-thermal environment interaction and quantify thermal comfort. The approach involves development of entropy generation term by applying second law of thermodynamics to the combined human-environment system. The entropy generation term combines both human thermal physiological responses and thermal environmental variables to provide an objective measure of thermal comfort. The original concepts and definitions form the basis for establishing the mathematical relationship between thermal comfort and entropy generation term. As a result of logic and deterministic approach, an Objective Thermal Comfort Index (OTCI) is defined and established as a …
