Oxidation Of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid By N-Bromosuccinimide In Aqueous Alkaline Medium -- A Kinetic Study, S. K. Mavalangi, M. R. Kembhavi, S. T. Nandibewoor Jan 2001

Oxidation Of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid By N-Bromosuccinimide In Aqueous Alkaline Medium -- A Kinetic Study, S. K. Mavalangi, M. R. Kembhavi, S. T. Nandibewoor

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The kinetics of oxidation of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) by N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) in aqueous alkaline media was investigated at 25°C. Analysis of the results showed the reaction is first -- order with respect to [NBS] and apparently less than unit order each with respect to [EDTA] and [alkali]. The influence of the reaction products, ionic strength, temperature effect and dielectric constant of the medium on the rate of reaction was studied. The proposed mechanism is consistent with the observed kinetics. The reaction constants involved in the mechanism were derived. There is a good agreement between the observed and calculated rate constants …

Electrooxidation Of Methanol And Formic Acid On Platinum Dispersed Polypyrrole Electrodes, İpek Beceri̇k, Fi̇gen Kadirgan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The present study was performed in order to investigate the electrocatalytic properties of platinum incorporated polypyrrole films for methanol and formic acid oxidations. The behaviour of this modified electrode was characterised in acidic media (0.1M HClO_4). The electrodes exhibited excellent long-term stability in this media. After the modification and optimisation, the electrocatalytic properties of polypyrrole-metal particles and kinetics of the oxidation reactions were interpreted with regard to fuel cell applications.

Propylene Dimerization Over Nickel-Ion Exchanged Zeolites In The Liquid Phase, Mina K. Munshieva Jan 2001

Propylene Dimerization Over Nickel-Ion Exchanged Zeolites In The Liquid Phase, Mina K. Munshieva

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The possibility of the dimerization of propylene in the liquid phase over nickel-ion exchanged zeolites (Ni-zeolites) modified by treatment with AlEt_{2}Cl to provide enhanced activity is studied. In order to determine the influence of the crystalline structure of zeolites on their catalytic activity and the selection of the most active catalyst the zeolites of faujasite (NaX, NaY), eryonite and mordenite types with various structures and different cell sizes have been chosen. The samples of Ni-zeolites were prepared by ion exchange with nickel nitrate in a corresponding zeolite. The treatment of these zeolites with AlEt_{2}Cl leads to the formation of active …

Hydrothermal And Microwave Synthesis Of Boron Phosphate, Bpo_{4}, A. Baykal, Meral Kizilyalli, M. Toprak, R. Kniep Jan 2001

Hydrothermal And Microwave Synthesis Of Boron Phosphate, Bpo_{4}, A. Baykal, Meral Kizilyalli, M. Toprak, R. Kniep

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

BPO_4 was previously synthesized by the solid state reactions of (NH_4)_2HPO_4 and B_2O_3 at 1000 ^oC and was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and IR methods. We have now succeeded in preparing BPO_4 from H_3BO_3 and P_2O_5 using hydrothermal synthesis by heating at 160 ^oC for 2 days and obtained a single phase product. We observed that a microwave-assisted synthesis takes only 3 to 5 minutes to transform a solid mixture of (NH_4)_2B_4O_7.4H_2O, and solid H_3PO_4 or B_2O_3 + P_2O_5 into the crystalline title compound. Its X-ray powder diffraction data and IR spectra were in good agreement with the literature …

Bounding The Wild Set (Counting The Minimum Number Of Wild Primes In Hilbert Symbol Equivalent Number Fields), Marius M. Somodi Jan 2001

Bounding The Wild Set (Counting The Minimum Number Of Wild Primes In Hilbert Symbol Equivalent Number Fields), Marius M. Somodi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation makes a contribution to the study of Witt rings of quadratic forms over number fields. To every pair of algebraic number fields with isomorphic Witt rings one can associate a number, called the minimum number of wild primes. The situation is particularly nice when this number is 0; often it is not 0. Earlier investigations have established lower bounds for this number. In this dissertation an analysis is presented that expresses the minimum number of wild primes in terms of the number of wild dyadic primes. This formula not only gives immediate upper bounds, but can be considered …

Artin-Schreier Families And 2-D Cycle Codes, Cem Guneri Jan 2001

Artin-Schreier Families And 2-D Cycle Codes, Cem Guneri

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We start with the study of certain Artin-Schreier families. Using coding theory techniques, we determine a necessary and sufficient condition for such families to have a nontrivial curve with the maximum possible number of rational points over the finite field in consideration. This result produces several nice corollaries, including the existence of certain maximal curves; i.e., curves meeting the Hasse-Weil bound. We then present a way to represent two-dimensional (2-D) cyclic codes as trace codes starting from a basic zero set of its dual code. This representation enables us to relate the weight of a codeword to the number of rational …

Break Out Session: The Future Of White Dwarf Observing, Ted Von Hippel

Publications

On Thursday, June 15, 2000 the conference participants joined on of four afternoon break out sessions. Our break out session was charged with addressing the the following questions: Astronomy is changing. Eight to ten meter telescopes looking towards the edge of the Universe will dominate the astronomical landscape. Queue scheduling, large surveys, and the current emphasis towards the red end of the spectrum will also affect us. What consequences do these changes imply for our field? How can we convince telescope assignment committees to grand observing time to proposers from our community?

The Multiplicities Of A Dual-Thin Q-Polynomial Association Scheme, Bruce E. Sagen, John S. Caughman Iv

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Let Y=(X,{Ri}1≤iD) denote a symmetric association scheme, and assume that Y is Q-polynomial with respect to an ordering E0,...,ED of the primitive idempotents. Bannai and Ito conjectured that the associated sequence of multiplicities mi (0≤iD) of Yis unimodal. Talking to Terwilliger, Stanton made the related conjecture that mimi+1 and mimDi for i<D/2. We prove that if Y is dual-thin in the sense of Terwilliger, then the …

Extensional Tectonics And The Geometry Of Related Macroscopic Structures: Field Evidence From The Gediz Detachment, Western Turkey, Hasan Sözbi̇li̇r Jan 2001

Extensional Tectonics And The Geometry Of Related Macroscopic Structures: Field Evidence From The Gediz Detachment, Western Turkey, Hasan Sözbi̇li̇r

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The large-scale, low-angle Gediz detachment fault that constitutes the southern margin of the Gediz graben (also known as the Alaşehir graben) has macroscopic structures of extensional origin, such as folds and back-tilted strata. The folds were formed as antiformal and synformal structures with axes both parallel and perpendicular to the extensional direction in their footwalls and hanging-walls, respectively. An extension-parallel antiform-synform pair in the footwall of the Gediz detachment, namely the Oyukkıran antiform and the Keserler synform, are recognized south of Dereköy village (Salihli) on the southern margin of the Gediz graben. These are NE-trending domal and basinal structures with …

The Effect Of Phonon Drag Of Charge Carriers In In_{1 - X} Ga_{X} Sb, Sadiyar Ahmedoglu Zeynalov Jan 2001

The Effect Of Phonon Drag Of Charge Carriers In In_{1 - X} Ga_{X} Sb, Sadiyar Ahmedoglu Zeynalov

Turkish Journal of Physics

The temperature dependencies of the thermal power a_{0} and thermal conductivity \kappa in two samples of In_{1 - x} Ga_{x}Sb (x=0.65 and 0.45) doped by {Te\sim } 0.001 at\%, with electron concentration n = 5.9 \cdot 10^{16} and 1.3 \cdot 10^{17} cm^{ - 3} (at 100K), have been investigated. It is shown that in In_{0.35}Ga_{0.65}Sb a_{0} increases with decreasing T below 50K. At 14K a_{0} passes through maximum and it falls sharply with decreasing T. It is shown that the maximum value of a_{0} is in agreement with the maximum value of \kappa . In In_{0.55}Ga_{0.45}Sb, starting from T = …

Measurement Of The Gluon Parton Distribution Function At Small X With Neutrino Telescopes, Gabriele U. Varieschi Jan 2001

Measurement Of The Gluon Parton Distribution Function At Small X With Neutrino Telescopes, Gabriele U. Varieschi

Physics Faculty Works

We analyze the possibility that neutrino telescopes may provide an experimental determination of the slope λ of the gluon distribution in the proton at momentum fractions x smaller than the accelerator reach. The method is based on a linear relation between λ and the spectral index ~slope! of the down-going atmospheric muon flux above 100 TeV, for which there is no background. Considering the uncertainties in the charm production cross section and in the cosmic ray composition, we estimate the error on the measurement of l through this method, excluding the experimental error of the telescopes, to be ±0.2.

On The Existence Of Finite Type Link Homotopy Invariants, Blake Mellor, Dylan Thurston Jan 2001

On The Existence Of Finite Type Link Homotopy Invariants, Blake Mellor, Dylan Thurston

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We show that for links with at most 5 components, the only finite type homotopy invariants are products of the linking numbers. In contrast, we show that for links with at least 9 components, there must exist finite type homotopy invariants which are not products of the linking numbers. This corrects previous errors of the first author.

What To Do On Your Summer Vacation, Alissa Crans Jan 2001

What To Do On Your Summer Vacation, Alissa Crans

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

Summer vacation brings back fond memories: playing frisbee in the park, bike-riding till dusk, sipping lemonade on the porch with Grandpa, collecting shells at the beach, solving that difficult math problem you've been working on for the past several weeks. Wait a minute, you say? Many mathematics majors don't realize that numerous summer opportunities exist (many of them paid, so you don't need to get that job bagging groceries, too). A math program provides intellectual stimulation during those hot summer months, bringing your level of concentration up from swatting flies and applying sunscreen. The following descriptions are from actual participants …

The Hadamard Core Of The Totally Nonnegative Matrices, Alissa Crans Jan 2001

The Hadamard Core Of The Totally Nonnegative Matrices, Alissa Crans

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

An m-by- n matrix A is called totally nonnegative if every minor of A is nonnegative. The Hadamard product of two matrices is simply their entry-wise product. This paper introduces the subclass of totally nonnegative matrices whose Hadamard product with any totally nonnegative matrix is again totally nonnegative. Many properties concerning this class are discussed including: a complete characterization for min{m,n}<4 >; a characterization of the zero–nonzero patterns for which all totally nonnegative matrices lie in this class; and connections to Oppenheim's inequality.

Oceanographic processes in the subantarctic region contribute crucially to the phys. and biogeochemical aspects of the global climate system. To explore and quantify these contributions, the Antarctic Cooperative Research Center organized the SAZ Project, a multidisciplinary, multiship study carried out south of Australia in the austral summer of 1997-1998. We present an overview of the SAZ Project and some of its major results.

Dinoflagellates can be classified both botanically and zoologically; however, they are typically put in the botanical division Pyrrhophyta. As a group they appear most related to the protistan ciliates and apicomplexans at the ultrastructure level. Within the Pyrrhophyta are both unarmored and armored forms of the dominant, motile flagellated stage. Unarmored dinoflagellates do not have thecal or wall plates arranged in specific series, whereas armored species have plates that vary in thickness but are specific in number and arrangement. In armored dinoflagellates, the plate pattern and tabulation is a diagnostic character at the family, subfamily, and even genus levels. In …

Extent And Impacts Of Dryland Salinity, C E. Mcconnell, R Short Jan 2001

Extent And Impacts Of Dryland Salinity, C E. Mcconnell, R Short

Resource management technical reports

The extent and impact of dryland salinity in Western Australia was based on analysis of groundwater depth and trend and the risk of shallow watertables is derived from these two attributes. As dryland salinity is caused by shallow watertables, the risk of salinity is inferred from the risk of shallow watertables.
