Energetics And Cooperativity In Three-Center Hydrogen Bonding Interactions. Ii. Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding Systems, Ruben D. Parra, Bing Gong, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

High level ab initio calculations have been carried out on a number of intramolecular two- and three-center H-bonding structures containing the amide motif, NHC=O. These structures serve as model systems for probing the stability of intramolecular three-center H bonds of the type A1HA2. Particular attention is given to cooperative effects in the three-center H-bonding structures. A systematic assessment of cooperativity for intramolecular H-bonding systems is presented.

Observations Of Persistent Leonid Meteor Trails. 1. Advection Of The "Diamond Ring", Jack D. Drummond, Brent W. Grime, Chester S. Gardner, Alan Z. Liu, Xinzhao Chu, Timothy J. Kane

Physical Sciences - Daytona Beach

From a single image of a persistent trail left by a -1.5 magnitude Leonid meteor on November 17, 1998, the relative winds between 92.5 and 98 km altitude are derived, where the altitudes are determined by a sodium lidar. These are converted to true winds 82 sec after the appearance of the meteor by fixing the winds at 98 km to match the results of following the trail with the lidar for twelve minutes. The image and winds reveal a fine example of the effects of a gravity wave having a vertical wavelenth of 5.50 ± 0.02 km, a horizontal …

Electron and ion microprobe data on two samples of welshite from the type locality of Langban, Sweden, gave analytical totals of 99.38-99.57 wt.% and BeO contents of 4.82-5.11 wt.%, corresponding to 1.692-1.773 Be/20 O. Mossbauer and optical spectra of one of these samples gave Fe-[iv](3+)/Sigma Fe = 0.91, Fe-[iv](2+)/Sigma Fe = 0.09, and no evidence of Mn3+. The resulting formula for this sample is Ca2Mg3.8Mn0.62+Fe0.12+Sb1.55+O2[Si2.8Be1.7Fe0.653+Al0.7As0.17O18], and that for the second sample, Ca2Mg3.8Mn0.12+Fe0.12+F0.83+Sb1.25+O2[Si2.8Be1.8F0.653+Al0.25As0.25O18], is related by the substitution involving tetrahedral and octahedral sites: 0.59([vi,iv])(Fe,Al)(3+) approximate to 0.42([vi])(Mg,Mn,Fe)(2+) + 0.21(Sb-[vi],As-[iv])(5+), i.e. 3([vi,iv]) M3+ = 2([vi])M(2+) + M-[vi,iv](5+). The Fine Structure Of The Kasparov Groups I: Continuity Of The Kk-Pairing, Claude Schochet Oct 2001

The Fine Structure Of The Kasparov Groups I: Continuity Of The Kk-Pairing, Claude Schochet

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

In this paper it is demonstrated that the Kasparov pairing is continuous with respect to the natural topology on the Kasparov groups, so that a KK-equivalence is an isomorphism of topological groups. In addition, we demonstrate that the groups have a natural pseudopolonais structure, and we prove that various KK-structural maps are continuous.

The work summarizes factors influencing on air emissions from various full-scale hazardous waste incinerators (rotary kiln, multiple hearth furnace, starved-air incinerator, fluidized bed incinerator, liquid injection incinerator). Air pollutant emissions from hazardous waste incineration can be minimized not only by flue-gas cleaning. There are many factors that influence on flue-gas composition and the quantity of air pollutants formed during incineration: the type, the composition and the quantity of waste, the way of waste introducing to the incinerator, excess air ratio, combustion temperature, retention time of exhaust gases etc. Special attention was paid to the loading of waste and incineration conditions …

The clinker burning plant is ideally suited for processing a wide variety of hazardous waste materials. High temperatures existing in cement kilns (ca. 1350-1450 Centigrades in the burning zone) as well as long gas-residence time (ca. 6-10 s) provide potentially excellent conditions for destruction of toxic organic compounds. Non-volatile compounds are retained in the solid phase and built into the clinker. A lot of other (for example acid gases) can also be absorbed by alkaline solid phase. Old pesticide wastes present a big problem in Poland now. They can be use as waste-derived fuels in cement kilns, especially in the …

Maximum Likelihood Estimation Of Ordered Multinomial Parameters, Nicholas P. Jewell, John D. Kalbfleisch Oct 2001

Maximum Likelihood Estimation Of Ordered Multinomial Parameters, Nicholas P. Jewell, John D. Kalbfleisch

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The pool-adjacent violator-algorithm (Ayer, et al., 1955) has long been known to give the maximum likelihood estimator of a series of ordered binomial parameters, based on an independent observation from each distribution (see Barlow et al., 1972). This result has immediate application to estimation of a survival distribution based on current survival status at a set of monitoring times. This paper considers an extended problem of maximum likelihood estimation of a series of ‘ordered’ multinomial parameters. By making use of variants of the pool adjacent violator algorithm, we obtain a simple algorithm to compute the maximum likelihood estimator and demonstrate …

Effect Of Surface Charges On The Rates Of Intermolecular Electron-Transfer Between De Novo Designed Metalloproteins, Anna Y. Kornilova, James F. Wishart, Michael Y. Ogawa Oct 2001

Effect Of Surface Charges On The Rates Of Intermolecular Electron-Transfer Between De Novo Designed Metalloproteins, Anna Y. Kornilova, James F. Wishart, Michael Y. Ogawa

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A de novo designed coiled-coil metalloprotein was prepared that uses electrostatic interactions to control both its conformational and bimolecular electron-transfer properties. The title protein exists as a coiled-coil heterodimer of the [Ru(trpy)(bpy)-KK(37-mer)] and [Ru(NH3)(5)-EE(37-mer)] polypeptides which is formed by interhelix electrostatic attractions. Circular dichroism studies show that the electrostatic heterodimer has Kd 0.19 +/- 0.03 muM and is 96% helical at high concentrations. Intercomplex electron-transfer reactions were studied that involve the [Ru(NH3)(5)-H21](2+) electron-donor and the [Ru(trpy)(bpy)H21](3+) electron-acceptor belonging to different electrostatic dimers. An important feature of the designed metalloprotein is its two cationic redox centers embedded within protein surfaces having …

Convergence Classes And Spaces Of Partial Functions, Anthony K. Seda, Roland Heinze, Pascal Hitzler Oct 2001

Convergence Classes And Spaces Of Partial Functions, Anthony K. Seda, Roland Heinze, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We study the relationship between convergence spaces and convergence classes given by means of both nets and filters, we consider the duality between them and we identify in convergence terms when a convergence space coincides with a convergence class. We examine the basic operators in the Vienna Development Method of formal systems development, namely, extension, glueing, restriction, removal and override, from the perspective of the Logic for Computable Functions. Thus, we examine in detail the Scott continuity, or otherwise, of these operators when viewed as operators on the domain (XY) of partial functions mapping X into …

Crystal Structure Of Mtan, A Global Multidrug Transporter Gene Activator, Michael H. Godsey, Natalya N. Baranova, Alexander A. Neyfakh, Richard G. Brennan

CUP Faculty Research

MtaN (Multidrug Transporter Activation, N terminus) is a constitutive, transcriptionally active 109-residue truncation mutant, which contains only the N-terminal DNA-binding and dimerization domains of MerR family member Mta. The 2.75 Å resolution crystal structure of apo-MtaN reveals a winged helix-turn-helix protein with a protruding 8-turn helix (α5) that is involved in dimerization by the formation of an antiparallel coiled-coil. The hydrophobic core and helices α1 through α4 are structurally homologous to MerR family member BmrR bound to DNA, whereas one wing (Wing 1) is shifted. Differences between the orientation of α5 with respect to the core and the revolution of …

Simulation Of Capture Behaviour In Ieee 802.11 Radio Modems, C. Ware, Joe F. Chicharo, Tadeusz A. Wysocki

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

In this paper we investigate the performance of common capture models in terms of the fairness properties they reflect across contenting hidden connections. We propose a new capture model, Message Retraining,as a means of providing an accurate description of experimental data. Using two fairness indices we undertake a quantitative study of the accuracy with which each capture model is able to reflect experimental data. Standard capture models are shown to be unable to accurately reflect the fairness properties of empirical data. The Message Retraining capture model is shown to provide a good estimate of actual system performance in varying signal …

Optimization Of Orthogonal Polyphase Spreading Sequences For Wireless Data Applications, Beata J. Wysocki, Tadeusz A. Wysocki Oct 2001

Optimization Of Orthogonal Polyphase Spreading Sequences For Wireless Data Applications, Beata J. Wysocki, Tadeusz A. Wysocki

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

We propose a simple but efficient method for optimizing correlation properties of polyphase spreading sequences for asynchronous DS CDMA applications. The proposed method can be used to minimize the mean square value of aperiodic crosscorrelation or the mean square value of aperiodic autocorrelation, the maximum value of aperiodic crosscorrelation functions, merit factor or other properties of the sequence set. The important feature of the method is that when applied to orthogonal sequences, it modifies correlation properties of the sequence set, while it preserves their orthogonality for perfect synchronization.

Solar Activity Variations Of The Venus Thermosphere/Ionosphere, Jane L. Fox, K. Y. Sung Oct 2001

Solar Activity Variations Of The Venus Thermosphere/Ionosphere, Jane L. Fox, K. Y. Sung

Physics Faculty Publications

We present models of the low and high solar activity thermospheres and ionospheres of Venus for a background atmosphere based largely on the VTS3 model of Hedin et al. [1983]. Our background model consists of 12 neutral species, and we compute the density profiles of 13 ions and 7 minor neutrals. We find that the peak production rates of some ions, such as CO2+ and N2+, vary approximately as the solar flux and that some, whose parent neutrals are photochemically produced, such as O+, N+, and C+, show variations …
