Individual and simultaneous confidence intervals using the data adaptively are constructed for the effects in orthogonal saturated designs under the assumption of effect sparsity. The minimum coverage probabilities of the intervals are equal to the nominal level 1 - α.

Chromospherically Active Stars. Xix. A Reexamination Of The Variability Of Hd 10909=Uv Fornacis, Francis C. Fekel, Gregory W. Henry, Keinon Brooks, Douglas S. Hall

We have obtained new spectroscopy and photometry of the K0 IV, chromospherically active, single-lined spectroscopic binary HD 10909. Those observations show that the previously reported orbital and light variability periods are incorrect. HD 10909 has an orbital period of 30.1067 days and an eccentricity of 0.499. Its rotation period of 64.1 days is more than twice as long as its orbital period. The primary is situated near the base of the first-ascent red giant branch. Thus, its asynchronous rotation is likely the result of its recent evolution through the Hertzsprung gap, combined with its relatively long orbital period and high …

This paper presents boundary optimization techniques for the nonexpansive decomposition of arbitrary-length signals with multirate filterbanks. Both biorthogonal and paraunitary filterbanks are considered. The paper shows how matching moments and orthonormality can be imposed as additional conditions during the boundary filter optimization process. It provides direct solutions to the problem of finding good boundary filters for the following cases: (a) biorthogonal boundary filters with exactly matching moments and (b) orthonormal boundary filters with almost matching moments. With the proposed methods, numerical optimization is only needed if orthonormality and exactly matching moments are demanded. The proposed direct solutions are applicable to …

Advanced learning technologies facilitate team teaching at the college/university level. Team teaching has been shown to benefit both students and faculty. This paper explores the benefits of using a course management package in an interdisciplinary team environment. Among those benefits are: better communication, student monitoring and support, flexibility in subject deliver, and fostering a collaborative environment. The success in the early developmental stage of integrating one such learning technology (Web Course Tools, or WebCT) into our course has seen the package move from a simple tool to an essential member of a teaching team.

In 1914 Constantin Carathéodory gave his definition of a measurable set, a definition that is crucial in the general theory of integration. This is because a “primitive” notion of area or measure, on a smaller family of sets, can be extended to the larger family of measurable sets, and it is this larger family that has the necessary properties for a natural and complete theory of integration. This more general theory of integration is of enormous practical importance, for it leads to quite broad conditions under which basic operations on integrals are valid. The isothermal magnetization m (H) of the metamagnet FeCl2 is measured in axial magnetic fields 0 ≤ μ0Ha ≤ 12 T at temperatures 34 ≤ T ≤ 53 K above the Néel temperature, where the system is essentially a two-dimensional Ising ferromagnet. The analysis of the data indicates experimental accessibility of the critical exponent μ of the Yang-Lee edge singularities. They manifest themselves in divergences of the density functions g(θ), which quantify the distribution of the zeros of the partition function on the Lee-Yang unit circle in the complex plane. A 300 K bulk (three-dimensional) mobility of 1245 cm2/V s has been measured in free-standing GaN. Temperature-dependent Hall-effect data on this particular sample are fitted to obtain unknown lattice-scattering parameters, as well as shallow donor (ND) and acceptor (NA) concentrations, which are ND = 6.7×1015 and NA = 1.7×1015 cm−3. Realistic values of the maximum mobility attainable in bulk GaN are then obtained by assuming two-orders-of-magnitude lower values of ND and NA, leading to a maximum 300 K mobility of 1350 cm2 …

Lithospheric Structure Of The Basin And Range Province-Southwestern Colorado Plateau. Southeastern California, Southern Nevada, And Western Arizona, Nigel Oakley Hicks

The Basin and Range Province of the western United States is an unusually wide continental rift zone and its structure and evolution have been the topic of much debate. Active source seismic surveys within the Basin and Range Province have delineated a relatively uniform crustal thickness (-30 km) despite varying magnitudes of crustal extension (<10-300 km). Large scale Cenozoic crustal extension has exhumed midcrustal rocks (from 10-20 km depth) along low angle detachment faults to create metamorphic core complexes (exposed lower plate rocks). In contrast to the extreme amounts of extension and internal deformation of the Basin and Range, the Colorado Plateau has remained a relatively rigid block, with a crustal thickness of 40-50 km, apparently resistant to the deformation processes that have shaped the Basin and Range observed today. In general, geophysical surveys reveal a significant contrast in crustal structure between the Basin and Range and it's transition into the Colorado Plateau.

The debate about the origin of the Basin and Range has underscored the need for additional geophysical constraints. Thus in this study, a regional analysis of lithospheric structure in the region of southeastern California, southern Nevada, and western Arizona that includes the Basin and Rangesouthwestern …

Reducing the bit rate of waveform interpolation speech coders while maintaining the perceptual quality has been the focus of a great deal of research. This letter proposes a new method of slowly evolving waveform (SEW) quantization specifically targeted at low rate coding. The proposed method uses a pulse model whose parameters are implicitly contained in the quantized rapidly evolving waveform (REW) parameters, thus requiring no bits for transmission. Results indicate no degradation in perceptual speech quality when compared to that of the existing SEW quantization method. Continental shelves and slopes are productive and dynamic ocean margin systems that also regulate the fluxes of terrestrial, riverine, and estuarine materials between the continents and oceans. In order to evaluate the ages, potential sources, and transformations of organic matter in an ocean margin system, we measured the radiocarbon (Delta (14)C and delta (13)C distributions of total dissolved organic carbon (DOC), suspended particulate organic carbon (POC), and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in waters of the Middle Atlantic Bight (MAB) continental shelf and slope in April-May 1994. We consider a container terminal discharging containers from a ship and locating them in the terminal yard. Each container has a number of potential locations in the yard where it can be stored. Containers are moved from the ship to the yard using a fleet of vehicles, each of which can carry one container at a time. The problem is to assign each container to a yard location and dispatch vehicles to the containers so as to minimize the time it takes to download all the containers from the ship. We prove an inverse function theorem of the Nash-Moser type. The main difference between our method and that of [4] is that we use continuous steepest descent while [4] uses a combination of Newton type iterations and approximate inverses. We bypass the loss of derivatives problem by working on finite dimensional subspaces of infinitely differentiable functions.

A novel method for the control of stimulated Raman scattering and hot electron production in short-pulse laser-plasma interactions is proposed. It relies on the use of a linear frequency chirp in nonbandwidth limited pulses. Theoretical calculations show that a 12% bandwidth will eliminate Raman forward scattering for a plasma density that is 1% of the critical density. The predicted changes to the growth rate are confirmed in two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Relevance to areas of current research is also discussed.

In the context of superluminal propagation of wave packets through potential barriers, the tunneling speed is usually characterized by the Wigner velocity. We propose an alternative speed that takes into account the interference between the incoming and the reflected waves and leads to a better estimation of arrival time for a wave packet entering the tunneling region. This arrival time is derived by an extrapolation from inside the barrier. The analytical theory is based on the stationary phase approximation whose validity is justified by a comparison with the numerical solution of the time-dependent Dirac equation.

The International Organization of Standardization (ISO) has created a series of voluntary standards (ISO 14000) which promote waste reduction and improve businesses’ environmental management. ISO 14001 is the Environmental Management System portion of ISO 14000 requiring employee awareness and involvement. The Robert Bosch Corporation is undergoing ISO 14001 certification.

In this study, a 23-question survey was used to evaluate Bosch employees’ awareness of ISO 14000 and their support of a waste reduction program at four plants (Johnson City, TN; Sumter, South Carolina; Ashland, Ohio; and South Bend, Indiana). A brackish lagoon at Itaipu, Brazil, contains magnetotactic bacteria with unusually large magnetite magnetosomes (lengths 100–200 nm). The micromagnetic structures of the magnetosomes from two different coccoid organisms from the lagoon have been determined by electron holography. The results are consistent with single-magnetic-domain structure in the elongated magnetosomes from one organism and metastable, single-magnetic-domain structure in the larger, more equi-axed, magnetosomes from the other organism. The results are consistent with theoretical predictions of the transition dimension between stable and metastable single-domain structure in magnetite.

The Little Ice Age (LIA) was a late Holocene interval of climate cooling registered in the North Atlantic region by expansion of alpine glaciers and sea ice (Grove, 1988). Here the LIA includes an early phase from about AD 1280 to AD 1390, along with a main phase from about AD 1556 to AD 1860, followed by warming and ice retreat (Holzhauser and Zumbiihl, 1999a). It has recently been demonstrated from records of North Atlantic ice-rafted debris that the LIA is the latest cooling episode in a pervasive 1500-year cycle of the climate system that may lie at the heart …

The purpose of this project is to evaluate the effect of hydrogen on cracking of candidate target materials for applications in spallation-neutron-target (SNT) systems such as accelerator production of tritium (APT) and accelerator transmutation of waste (ATW). The test materials will undergo appropriate thermal treatments prior to being hydrogen-charged by potentiostatic cathodic polarization technique in a simulated aqueous environment at different temperatures of interest. The specimens, upon completion of testing, will be metallographically examined. Meta-scheduling, a process which allows a user to schedule a job across multiple sites, has a potential for livelock. Current systems avoid livelock by locking down resources at multiple sites and allowing a metascheduler to control the resources during the lock down period or by limiting job size to that which will fit on one site. The former approach leads to poor utilization; the later poses limitations on job size. This research uses BYU's Meta-scheduler (YMS) which allows jobs to be scheduled across multiple sites without the need for locking down the nodes. This paper introduces the discrete singular convolution algorithm for vibration analysis of rectangular plates with mixed boundary conditions. A unified scheme is proposed for the treatment of simply supported, clamped and transversely supported (with nonuniform elastic rotational restraint) boundary conditions. The robustness and reliability of the present approach are tested by a number of numerical experiments. All results agree well with those in the literature.

This work introduces an alternative algorithm, simulated annealing, to minimize the prediction error from neural networks that traditionally use back-propagation methods. The simulated annealing algorithm stochastically samples the parameter space formed by weights of the neural network until a minimal error is found.

Three problems were investigated in this work: the radiator problem, the spiral problem, and the time series prediction problem. Each of them was examined using the same neural network architecture, i.e., a 2-layer network, and trained by both back-propagation and simulated annealing.

Liquid chromatographic (LC) methods were developed for quantitating the potential avian contraceptive DiazaCon in quail feed and serum. DiazaCon was extracted from ground quail feed with basic n-butyl chloride. The n-butyl chloride extract was evaporated to dryness. The DiazaCon residues were dissolved in an aqueous methanolic ion pairing solution and quantitated by LC at 206 nm. Avian sera was combined with an equal volume of a pH 4 aqueous solution of ion pairing reagent and filtered to remove interfering proteins. DiazaCon was quantitated by LC. Mean recoveries for 500 and 2000 ppm fortified feed were 89.1 and 91.0%, …

We update the measurement of the tt̅ production cross section using the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. This measurement uses tt̅ decays to the final states e+ν+jets and μ+ν+jets. We search for b quarks from t decays via secondary-vertex identification or the identification of semileptonic decays of the b and cascade c quarks. The background to the tt̅ production is determined primarily through a Monte Carlo simulation. However, we calibrate the simulation and evaluate its uncertainty using several independent data samples. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV/c2, we measure σ t t¯ …

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) currently monitors river dioxin levels through the sampling and destructive analysis of fish. Recent state law mandates that by December 31, 2002, the dioxin concentrations in fish downstream of a bleached Kraft pulp and paper mill are not to exceed the concentrations in fish upstream of the mill (38 M.R.S.A. §420-A). The objective of this thesis project was to develop an alternate method for determining Kraft mill compliance to this Dioxin law. Amorphous thin films of DyxFe100-x and Dy20Fe80-yCoy, with various x and y values and of ~40 nm thickness, have been prepared by sputtering on polyimide films. Their magnetization curves and the Mössbauer spectra indicate that at 295 K the iron moments are preferentially oriented parallel to the film in Dy2Fe98 and that Dy6Fe94 is paramagnetic. The DyxFe100-x thin films, where x is 17, 20, 24, 29, 32, 35, and 37, show perpendicular magnetic anisotropies and moderate coercive fields of at most 150 …
