During eruption, lava domes and flows may become unstable and generate dangerous explosions. Fossil lava-filled eruption conduits and ancient lava flows are often characterized by complex internal variations of gas content. These observations indicate a need for accurate predictions of the distribution of gas content and bubble pressure in an eruption conduit. Bubbly magma behaves as a compressible viscous liquid involving three different pressures: those of the gas and magma phases, and that of the exterior. To solve for these three different pressures, one must account for expansion in all directions and hence for both horizontal and vertical velocity components. …

For the old galactic cluster NGC 6791, Peterson & Green (1998a) and Chaboyer et al. (1999) have found that [Fe/H] approximately + 0.4 dex. A second look at that conclusion is taken in this paper. Zero-point problems are reviewed for a high-dispersion analysis done by Peterson & Green, and it is found that accidental errors have not been determined rigorously for the results of that analysis. It is also noted that in a color-magnitude analysis performed by Chaboyer et al., the important metallicity range between 0.0 and + 0.3 dex is not explored and hence is not ruled out. Moreover, …

Experimental Diatom Dissolution And The Quantification Of Microfossil Preservation In Sediments, D. B. Ryves, S. Juggins, Sherilyn C. Fritz, R. W. Battarbee

Four laboratory experiments on fresh, modern diatoms collected from lakes in the Northern Great Plains of North America were carried out to assess the effects of dissolution on diatom abundance and composition. Marked differences in mean dissolution susceptibility exist between species, despite sometimes significant intra- specific variation between heterovalves. Twenty-four taxa were ranked according to susceptibility to dissolution using an exponential decay model of valve abundance. This dissolution ranking was used to derive two weighted indices of sample preservation. To identify and quantify the principal processes that control the partitioning of carbon among oceanic reservoirs and between the ocean and atmosphere on focal and regional scales, with a view towards synthesis and prediction on a global scale, is a specific goal of the U.S. JGOFS Synthesis and Modeling Project. As a contribution towards achieving this goal, Drs. We present results of searches for technirho (ρT), techniomega (ωT), and Z ′ particles, using the decay channels ρT, ωT, Z ′ → ℯ+-. The search is based on 124.8 pb-1 of data collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992–1996. In the absence of a signal, we set 95% C.L. upper limits on the cross sections for the processes pp̅ → ρT, ωT, Z ′ → ℯ+- as a function of the mass of the decaying …

The study will examine stress-tolerance in two major groups of perennial intertidal macroalgae, the red and brown seaweeds. The research will test the hypothesis that active oxygen is involved in emersion stress of intertidal seaweeds. Damage due to active oxygen will be determined in stress-tolerant and stress- susceptible species exposed to emersion stress by measuring the peroxidation of membrane lipids. Plants will be grown in laboratory culture under conditions that increase their ability to withstand emersion stress. If the research hypothesis is correct, increases in stress tolerance should be associated with increased levels of antioxidants and/or protective enzymes. The proposed …

The isothermal magnetization m(H) of the metamagnet FeCl2 is measured in axial magnetic fields 0≤µ0Ha≤12 T at temperatures 34≤T≤53 K above the Néel temperature, where the system is essentially a two-dimensional Ising ferromagnet. The analysis of the data indicates experimental accessibility of the critical exponent µ of the Yang-Lee edge singularities. They manifest themselves in divergences of the density functions g(θ), which quantify the distribution of the zeros of the partition function on the Lee-Yang unit circle in the complex plane. Assuming that the polynomial hierarchy (PH) does not collapse, we show the existence of ascending sequences of ptime Turing degrees of length ω1/CK in PSPACE such that successors are polynomial jumps of their predecessors. Moreover these ptime degrees are all uniformly hard for PH. This is analogous to the hyperarithmetic hierarchy, which is defined similarly but with the (computable) Turing degrees. The lack of uniform least upper bounds for ascending sequences of ptime degrees causes the limit levels of our hyper-polynomial hierarchy to be inherently non-canonical. Stellar evolution models that include the effect of helium and heavy-element diffusion have been calculated for initial iron abundances of [Fe/H] = -2.3, -2.1, -1.9, and -1.7. These models were calculated for a large variety of masses and three separate mixing lengths, α = 1.50, 1.75, and 2.00 (with α = 1.75 being the solar calibrated mixing length). The change in the surface iron abundance for stars of different masses was determined for the ages of 11, 13, and 15 Gyr. Iron settles out of the surface convection zone on the main sequence ; this iron is dredged back up …

Reversible Melting And Crystallization Of Short And Long Flexible Chain Molecules By Temperature-Modulated Calorimetry, Jeongihm Pak

Melting and crystallization of linear, flexible molecules of different lengths was studied by temperature-modulated differential scanning calorimetry, TMDSC. Various techniques for TMDSC with single and multifrequency modulations have been analyzed to optimize the conditions for the present study. The finally chosen method involved a quasi-isothermal mode with a temperature amplitude of 0.5 K and a period of 60 s (frequency = 0.167 Hz). The interpretation of the reversible and irreversible melting was developed by comparison of a variety of different modes of analysis (sinusoidal, sawtooth, and complex sawtooth). The limestone region of Puerto Rico covers about 27.5 percent of the island's surface and is subdivided into the northern, southern, and dispersed limestone areas. All limestone areas have karst features. The karst belt is that part of the northern limestone with the most spectacular surficial karst landforms. It covers 142,544 ha or 65 percent of the northern limestone. The karst belt is the focus of this publication, although reference is made to all limestone regions. In this paper I discuss some results got in 1997/98 with Brazilian mathematics school teachers. The research was done to investigate their mathematical language as related to the concept of function. A dichotomy was detected between “formal” and “practical” language they used to express their own conceptions of function, as well as to teach their students this subject. Also, I found teachers’ conceptual images “shrinking” as soon as they were far from their colleges or universities programs.

Mathematicians and scientists have for a long time tried to understand why mathematics, a subjective creation of the human intellect, is so effective in the sciences, which study the objective, physical world. Satisfactory reasons have not been found because there has not been a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the subjective and the objective aspects of life. In this paper we will see that Maharishi’s Vedic Science, by explaining the link between the subjective realm where mathematics is located and the objective world that science examines, can resolve this problem in a natural way.

A Hypnotist Teaches Math: The Effect Of Person Centered Math Support Classes On At-Risk Community College Students, Ron Bell

The same elements which make Ericksonian hypnosis a highly effective therapeutic tool are found to be at work in an algebra support class called Math Success Orientation. Interpersonal dynamics of Carl Rogers’ person centered approach to counseling are also part of the philosophy of the class which has a four semester track record of improving both grades and attitude in at risk, math avoidant community college students. The article relates the history of the course with illustrations of how the elements of Person Centered Mathematics operate in the classroom. An appendix demonstrates the effect of the class on student grades
