An Assessment Of Potential Habitat Corridors And Landscape Ecology For Long-Tailed Macaques (Macaca Fascicularis) On Bali, Indonesia, Mark Warren Southern

The relationship between Balinese long-tailed macaques, Bali's cultural settings, and Bali's physical settings was studied. A Geographical Information System (GIS) database was developed and analyzed to determine if forest corridors exist on Bali that may provide habitat connectivity between 42 Balinese long-tailed macaque troops. The GIS database was also analyzed to determine if the landscape type that has the highest percentage of overlap with the 42 Balinese long-tailed macaque home range sites is forest. The results indicate that connectivity between troops located within Bali's western region is significantly higher than that for troops located in Bali's eastern region. The results …

Deformational Features In The Chattanooga Shale, Near Chattanooga, Tennessee, Dewayne Adarial Ponds

Several exposures of deformed middle Paleozoic rocks in the westernmost Valley and Ridge Physiographic Province, near Chattanooga, TN, reveal a variety of structures. These include centimeter-scale ellipsoidal to lensshaped masses of sandstone in the Mississippian to Devonian Chattanooga Shale. Fissility in the carbonaceous shale is intensified adjacent to these lenses and conforms to their biconvex shapes. Slickensides on rinds of highly polished shale trend northwest. The walnut- to fist-size masses are composed of fine- to medium-grained ferruginous quartz sandstone. Thin-section study reveals that the quartz grains retain detrital characteristics, but that many are broken and displaced; cataclastic deformation is particularly …

Solar is a software infrastructure designed to deliver contextual information to these applications. This essay examines some ethical aspects of stalking incidents in cyberspace. Particular attention is focused on the Amy Boyer/Liam Youens case of cyberstalking, which has raised a number of controversial ethical questions. We limit our analysis to three issues involving this particular case. First, we suggest that the privacy of stalking victims is threatened because of the unrestricted access to on-line personal information, including on-line public records, currently available to stalkers. Second, we consider issues involving moral responsibility and legal liability for Internet service providers (ISPs) when stalking crimes occur in their `space' on the Internet. A stereoselective route to cis-2-(2′-carboxycyclopropyl)glycine has been developed. exo-Nucleophilic addition to the (bicyclo[5.1.0]octadienyl)iron(1+) cation establishes the relative stereochemistry at the cyclopropane ring and the α-stereocenter. Subsequent removal of the metal and cleavage of the cyclic diene gave the protected target 10, which upon hydrolysis gave 1.

An attempt was made to establish the utility of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) as a quick and noninvasive field tool for shallow soil water content estimates as a function of space and time. Initially, detailed studies of collocated data, with electromagnetic velocity estimates from GPR data compared to gravimetric measurements of water content and to soil testure were carried out. Using the procedures developed during the detailed studies, full grids of GPR data were collected over the entire site several times. The numerical solution of these equations is needed in order to apply a source term within the energy equations. These equations have previously solved in FIDAP. The objective of the M. Phil degree project was to improve the digital acquisition speed of the existing Ocean Optic I/O S1000 spectrometer system. Research carried out prior to this research work indicated that the existing system, although allowing for successful spectroscopic measurements, did not provide for a true time-base required for time-resolved spectroscopy. The analogue/digital speed aspects of the I/O were investigated and shortcomings were found in the digital I/O of the system. We present a possible mechanism for the saturation of the velocity of photoinjected charge carriers in pure organic crystals, the analysis having been motivated by observations in pentacene. The mechanism is based on the strong wave vector dependence of the damping coefficient appearing in the appropriate effective mass equation. Our primary goal is to explore this mechanism in general terms rather than to apply it to a specific system such as pentacene. Our analysis is based on a Fokker-Planck equation treatment. We present a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decay Bs→μ+μ-φ in pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV, using 91 pb-1 of data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF).We find two candidate events for this decay, which are consistent with the background estimate of one event, and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of Ɓ(Bs→μ+μ-φ),6.7x10-5 at a 95% confidence level. This is the first limit on the branching fraction of this decay.

A trigger track processor, called the eXtremely Fast Tracker (XFT), has been designed for the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) upgrade. This processor identifies high-transverse- momentum ( 1 5 GeV/c) charged particles in the new central outer tracking chamber for CDF II. The XFT design is highly parallel to handle the input rate of 183 Gb/s and the output rate of 44 Gb/s. The processor is pipelined and reports the result for a new event every 132 ns. A model for the high-frequency backscatter angular response of gassy sediments is proposed. For the interface backscatter contribution we adopted the model developed by Jackson et al. @J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 79, 1410–1422 ~1986!#, but added modifications to accommodate gas bubbles. The model parameters that are affected by gas content are the density ratio, the sound speed ratio, and the loss parameter. For the volume backscatter contribution we developed a model based on the presence and distribution of gas in the sediment. Electron-impact differential cross-section measurements for the excitation of the 2p53s configuration of Ne are reported. The Ne cross sections are obtained using experimental differential cross sections for the electron-impact excitation of the n = 2 levels of atomic hydrogen [Khakoo et al., Phys. Rev. A 61, 012701-1 (1999)], and existing experimental helium differential cross-section measurements, as calibration standards. These calibration measurements were made using the method of gas mixtures (Ne and H followed by Ne and He), in which the gas beam profiles of the mixed gases are found to be the same within our experimental errors. Experimental evidence generated in controlled laboratory studies suggests that the legal system in general, and punitive damages awards in particular, should display an incoherent pattern. According to the prediction, inexperienced decisionmakers, such as juries, should fail to convert their qualitative judgments of defendants' conduct into consistent, meaningful dollar amounts. This Article tests this prediction and finds modest support for the thesis that experience across different types of cases will lead to greater consistency in awards. Despite this support, numerous studies of damage awards in real cases detect a generally sensible pattern of damage awards. This Article tries to reconcile the …

This thesis implements a model for the shape and dimension invariant programming based on the notation of the Mathematics of Arrays (MOA) algebra. It focuses on dimension and shape invariance implementation, and their effect in parallel computing. A new design for the MOA notation is implemented that eliminates the need for another PSI-compiler, or a language extension to functional programming languages. The MOA notation is designed as a library of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), contains object oriented classes implemented in C++. Minorities favor injured plaintiffs and give them inflated awards. This folk wisdom in the legal community influences choice of trial locale and the screening of jurors. A Los Angeles court is said to be known by local lawyers as "the bank" because of the frequency and size of its anti-corporate awards. A newspaper article summarizing court results suggests, somewhat jokingly, that the "Bronx County Courthouse should post a warning: People who get sued here run an increased risk of suffering staggering losses." Beliefs about the influence of factors other than race, such as income and urbanization, also are common.

To avoid increasing complexity, and allow the user to concentrate on her tasks, applications in a pervasive computing environment must automatically adapt to their changing \em context, including the user state and the physical and computational environment in which they run. Although there has been recent research into ways to design environments that enable end users to create their own programs, little attention has been given to helping these end users systematically test their programs. To help address this need in spreadsheet systems - the most widely used type of end-user programming language - we previously introduced a visual approach to systematically testing individual cells in spreadsheet systems. The Limpopo Belt of southern Africa is a Neoarchean orogenic belt located between two older Archean provinces, the Zimbabwe craton to the north and the Kaapvaal craton to the south. Previous studies considered the Limpopo Belt to be a linearly trending east-northeast belt with a width of ∼250 km and ∼600 km long. We provide evidence from gravity data constrained by seismic and geochronologic data suggesting that the Limpopo Belt is much larger than previously assumed and includes the Shashe Belt in Botswana, thus defining a southward convex orogenic arc sandwiched between the two cratons. Stable isotopes ratio of lake sediments can provide valuable environmental information. This possibility has been investigated using radiocarbon dated fossil lake sediments from the Himalayan region of Northern India. The chronology was established using Radiocarbon dating of both organic and inorganic fractions using (AMS). Inorganic ages are older than organic ages. Organic ages are expected to increase stratigraphically, however several anomalous old ages are found in the younger part of the sediments. Final chronology, determined using selected sensible ages identified two periods of sedimentation. The high sedimentation period is characterized by sedimentation rate of 0.8cm/yr and it fairly coincides with …

The purpose of this study was to examine the hypothesis that groundwater and surface water interaction resulted in the development a 1,4-dioxane plume in a glacial aquifer in Scio Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan.

An industrial solvent, 1,4-dioxane, was detected in the groundwater in the area of study in 1986. This area, referred to in this investigation as the Western Plume, is one of several 1,4-dioxane plumes associated with the Pall/Gelman Sciences Inc. (P/GSI) site, an extensively investigated site of groundwater contamination.

At PKC 2000, Inoue and Sakurai proposed some methods to design hash functions from block ciphers and codes (block codes and convolutional codes). They claimed that their hash functions are secure: 2(d-1)m/2 encryptions are necessary to find a collision, where d and m are the minimal distance of the code and the block size of block cipher, respectively. However, we show in this paper that a collision could be found with about alpha*2m encryptions, where alpha is a small number.

This paper describes a lightweight Intra-domain Management Protocol (IDMP) for managing mobility within a domain, commonly known as micro-mobility management, for next generation wireless networks. IDMP is modular and simple because it leverages existing protocols, such as Mobile IP or SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) as global mobility management, for locating roaming nodes. Unlike other proposed intra-domain mobility management schemes, IDMP uses two dynamically autoconfigured care-of addresses (CoAs) for routing the packets destined to mobile nodes. Gscope: A Visualization Tool For Time-Sensitive Software, Ashvin Goel, Jonathan Walpole

This paper describes gscope, a visualization tool for time-sensitive applications. Gscope provides an oscilloscope-like interface that can be integrated with applications. It focuses on software visualization and is thus designed to handle various types of signal waveforms, periodic or event-driven, in single or multithreaded environments as well as local or distributed applications. Gscope helps in visually verifying system correctness and modifying system parameters and thus can complement standard debugging techniques and be used to build compelling software demos. Initial experiments with using gscope show that the library has low overhead.
