Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The proposed work will combine chemical kinetics and hydrodynamics in target and test-loop lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) systems to model system corrosion effects. This approach will result in a predicative tool that can be validated with corrosion test data, used to systematically design tests and interpret the results, and provide guidance for optimization in LBE system designs. The task includes two subtasks. The first subtask is to try to develop the necessary predictive tools to be able to predict the levels of oxygen and corrosion products close to the boundary layer through the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling. The …

Building Trusted Paths For Web Browsers, Zishuang (Eileen) Ye May 2002

Building Trusted Paths For Web Browsers, Zishuang (Eileen) Ye

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

The communication between the Web browser and the human user is one component of the server-client channel. It is not the user but the browser that receives all server information and establishes the secure connection. The browser's user interface signals, such as SSL lock, https protocol header et al., indicate whether the browser-server communication at the current moment is secure. Those user interface signals indicating the security status of browser should be clearly and correctly understood by the user.

A survey of modern Web browsers shows the information provided by current browsers is insufficient for users to make trust judgment. …

Sustainable Agriculture : Pragmatism, Distinctions On Artifacts And The Role Of The Land Ethic, Dustin Mulvaney May 2002

Sustainable Agriculture : Pragmatism, Distinctions On Artifacts And The Role Of The Land Ethic, Dustin Mulvaney

Theses

This thesis will explore the ethical dimensions of global agriculture from the productionist paradigm to the land ethic in the context of the sustainable agriculture promoted in the fair trade, shade grown, and organic coffee movements. Much of the sustainable development debate in the environmental ethics literature has centered on justifications (from anthropocentric and nonanthropocentric worldviews) for preserving nature. Since agriculture is an artifact of human sedentary civilization, traditional nonanthropocentric arguments do not suffice because of the tendency to focus exclusively on natural systems. Building on the work of Katz's "Pragmatic ReConsideration" and Light's "methodological pragmatism," the role of anthropocentric …

Novel Synthesis Of 2-Methyl-3, 4, 5-Trichloropyrimidine, Daniel M. Goldman May 2002

Novel Synthesis Of 2-Methyl-3, 4, 5-Trichloropyrimidine, Daniel M. Goldman

Theses

A one-step synthesis of the heterocycle 2-methyl-3,4,5-trichloropyrimidine by the cycloaddition of hexachloropropene with acetamidine hydrochloride in methanolic NaOH was attempted. The product was dark amber oil. A by-product of this reaction was sodium chloride. The proposed reaction was expected to proceed via a SN2 nucleophilic displacement of three chlorine atoms on hexachloropropene by acetamidine, the nucleophile. The proposed driving force for this transformation is the lone pair of electrons on the amidine nitrogen along with the electron withdrawing ability of three chlorines on hexachloropropene which induces a partial positive charge on the carbon. It is proposed that the chlorine atoms …

Agricultural Land Reform Policy In Western Ukraine : The Influence Of Environmental History And Ethics, Andrew B. Wowk May 2002

Agricultural Land Reform Policy In Western Ukraine : The Influence Of Environmental History And Ethics, Andrew B. Wowk

Theses

Agricultural land privatization is an important environmental and economic policy within Ukraine, which is transitioning to a market-based economy. This thesis studied the influence of bioregional environmental history and environmental ethics on land privatization in Western Ukraine, within Lviv oblast, through historical research and field research of private farmers.

Historical research showed that due to its environmental history, the study area was particularly receptive to land privatization after Ukraine's independence in 1991. Field research indicated that farmers in the study area generally see private ownership of land as better for humans and the environment than collective land ownership. The farmers …

Slippage And Change Point Problem With Directional Data., Arnab Kumar Laha Dr. May 2002

Slippage And Change Point Problem With Directional Data., Arnab Kumar Laha Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In this thesis we develop statistical methods for dealing with two problems namely (1) THE SLIPPAGE PROBLEM and (2) THE CHANGE POINT PROB- LEM in the set-up of directional data. In this chapter, we provide an intro- duction to these problems and discuss the importance of the present work. The slippage problem is basically a problem to detect whether any unspecified observation in a given random sample comes from a distribution different from that for all the other remaining observations. This can also be viewed as a problem of outlier detection or that of spuriosity. This problem assumes great importance …

Effect Of Precondition On Porous Silicon Formation, Xuan Cheng, Guang-Feng Luo

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this work, effect of precondition on porous silicon formation was investigated by performing electrochemical polarization measurements. The surface morphologies and optical properties of the samples were also studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectrometer. It was demonstrated that precondition enhanced the chemical/electrochemical reactions occurred at Si/solution interface and the growth of porous silicon, which ultimately resulted in a red shift in photoluminescence. However, the thickness of porous silicon decreased with the increase of precondition time. More broad bands were observed with prolonged precondition.
