Studies Of Peroxyacetyl Nitrate (Pan) And Its Interaction With The Snowpack At Summit, Greenland, Kevin M. Ford, Bradley M. Campbell, P B. Shepson, Steven B. Bertman, R E. Honrath, Matthew C. Peterson, Jack E. Dibb May 2002

Studies Of Peroxyacetyl Nitrate (Pan) And Its Interaction With The Snowpack At Summit, Greenland, Kevin M. Ford, Bradley M. Campbell, P B. Shepson, Steven B. Bertman, R E. Honrath, Matthew C. Peterson, Jack E. Dibb

Earth Sciences

Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) was measured in ambient and snowpack interstitial air at Summit, Greenland, in June and July of 1998 and 1999 and at a rural/forest site in the Keewenaw Peninsula of Michigan in January of 1999. At Summit, we found that PAN typically represented between 30 and 60% of NOy. In the summer of 1999, a significant diel variation in both PAN/NOy and NOx/NOy was observed, but this was much less pronounced in 1998. Experiments during SNOW99 near Houghton, Michigan, indicated that PAN undergoes weak uptake onto snow grain surfaces. At Summit, we …

Targeting Of Ribonucleotide Reductase With 2'-Disulfide Analogs Of Adenosine. Electronic Versus Steric Effects In Radical Deoxygenation Of Fluorine-Containing Nucleosides, Dania Companioni

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inhibition of the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase is an appealing concept for the rational drug design against rapid proliferation of systems such as viruses and cancer cells. Synthesis of 2'-thionucleoside analogs as possible inhibitors of the enzyme was targeted in this research. For protecting the reactive thiol group, mixed disulfides were prepared as precursors of the sulfur-containing nucleosides. The thionucleoside obtained are currently under biological studies.

Fluorinated compounds are widely used in biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacology. Synthesis of 2'-deoxy-2'-fluoroadenosine and its arabino epimer as well as 3’-deoxy-3'-fluoroadenosine and its xylo epimer were also targeted in order to study the electronic …

Long Range Forecast Possibilities For X-Band Radar Construction On Shemya, Brian K. Schroeder May 2002

Long Range Forecast Possibilities For X-Band Radar Construction On Shemya, Brian K. Schroeder

Theses and Dissertations

Current moisture initialization sources lack the spatial and temporal resolution required for mesoscale moisture forecast accuracy critical for military operations. The Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite constellation provides an opportunity to extract accurate moisture observations based on the refraction of the GPS signal through the troposphere. GPS-derived precipitable water (PW) from two different research areas was independently compared with the Air Force Weather Agency s (AFWA's) MM5 PW model output. Results were concurrent with similar studies comparing GPS-derived PW with numerical weather models. The mean correlation in CONUS was 92.5%, while in Alaska it was 72.8%. Mean model biases were …

Anthropogenic Land-Use Change In The North American Tall Grass-Short Grass Transition And Modification Of Near-Surface Hydrologic Cycle, Rezaul Mamood, Kenneth Hubbard May 2002

Anthropogenic Land-Use Change In The North American Tall Grass-Short Grass Transition And Modification Of Near-Surface Hydrologic Cycle, Rezaul Mamood, Kenneth Hubbard

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

During the 19th and 20th centuries, the landscape of the North American Great Plains was rapidly modified from natural grasslands to agricultural farmlands. These changes affected much of the continent with potential impacts in grasslands equal to deforestation elsewhere. Therefore, the resulting impacts on weather and climate should be studied. In this study, a soil water balance model is applied for 3 land uses at 3 locations. These locations are representative of the east to west declining precipitation gradient of the Great Plains. It was found, in McCook, Nebraska, for example, that annual total evapotranspiration for irrigated maize is 36% …

Hypsometry And Volume Of The Arctic Ocean And Its Constituent Seas, Martin Jakobsson May 2002

Hypsometry And Volume Of The Arctic Ocean And Its Constituent Seas, Martin Jakobsson

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

This paper presents an analysis of the Arctic Ocean and its constituent seas for seafloor area distribution versus depth and ocean volume. The bathymetry from the International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO) is used together with limits defining this ocean and its constituent seas from the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) as well as redefined limits constructed to confine the seas to the shallow shelves. IBCAO is a bathymetric grid model with a resolution of 2.5 x 2.5 km, which significantly improved the portrayal of the Arctic Ocean seafloor through incorporation of newly released bathymetric data including echo soundings …

Early Warming Of Tropical South America At The Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition, G. O. Seltzer, D. T. Rodbell, P. A. Baker, Sherilyn C. Fritz, P. M. Tapia, H. D. Rowe, R. B. Dunbar

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Glaciation in the humid tropical Andes is a sensitive indicator of mean annual temperature. Here, we present sedimentological data from lakes beyond the glacial limit in the tropical Andes indicating that deglaciation from the Last Glacial Maximum led substantial warming at high northern latitudes. Deglaciation from glacial maximum positions at Lake Titicaca, Peru/Bolivia (16°S), and Lake Junin, Peru (11°S), occurred 22,000 to 19,500 calendar years before the present, several thousand years before the Bølling-Allerød warming of the Northern Hemisphere and deglaciation of the Sierra Nevada, United States (36.5° to 38°N). The tropical Andes deglaciated while climatic conditions remained regionally wet, …

A bathymetric survey was recently conducted in Southeast Florida (Broward County) during April 2001 using the Laser Airborne Depth Sounder (LADS) system. This four-meter resolution survey encompassed from North Dade County, through the length of Broward County coastline, to south Palm Beach County (approximately 43 km) and from the shore eastward to depths of approximately 40 m (2.5-3.5 km offshore). This georeferenced data was sun shaded at various angles and azimuths and draped with a NOAA NAPP 1:24,000 georeferenced air photograph mosaic. The model was zoomed and tipped to the desired orientations and processed into three-dimensional perspectives. Two views, slightly …

Warped Geometry Of Brane Worlds, Gary Felder, Andrei Frolov, Lev Kofman May 2002

Warped Geometry Of Brane Worlds, Gary Felder, Andrei Frolov, Lev Kofman

Physics: Faculty Publications

We study the dynamical equations for extra-dimensional dependence of a warp factor and a bulk scalar in 5D brane world scenarios with induced brane metric of constant curvature. These equations are similar to those for the time dependence of the scale factor and a scalar field in 4D cosmology, but with the sign of the scalar field potential reversed. Based on this analogy, we introduce novel methods for studying the warped geometry. We construct the full phase portraits of the warp factor/scalar system for several examples of the bulk potential. This allows us to view the global properties of the …

A Determination Of The Local Density Of White Dwarf Stars, Jay B. Holberg, Terry D. Oswalt, Edward M. Sión May 2002

A Determination Of The Local Density Of White Dwarf Stars, Jay B. Holberg, Terry D. Oswalt, Edward M. Sión

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The most recent version of the Catalog of Spectroscopically Identified White Dwarfs lists 2249 white dwarf stars. Among these stars are 109 white dwarfs that have either reliable trigonometric parallaxes or color-based distance moduli that place them at a distance within 20 pc of the Sun. Most of these nearby white dwarfs are isolated stars, but 28 (25% of the sample) are in binary systems, including such well-known systems as Sirius A/B and Procyon A/B. There are also three double degenerate systems in this sample of the local white dwarf population. The sample of local white dwarfs is largely complete …

Development Of A Mechanistic Understanding Of High-Temperature Deformation Of Alloy Ep-823 For Transmutation Applications, Ajit K. Roy, Brendan O'Toole

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The purpose of this project is to evaluate the elevated temperature tensile properties of Alloy EP-823, a leading target material for accelerator-driven waste transmutation applications. This alloy has been proven to be an excellent structural material to contain the lead-bismuth-eutectic (LBE) nuclear coolant needed for fast spectrum operations. However, very little data exist in the open literature on the tensile properties of this alloy. The selection of Alloy EP-823 as the test material in the proposed task is based on the recommendation of our collaborator at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The test material will be thermally treated prior …

Renormalized Path Integral For The Two-Dimensional Δ-Function Interaction, Horacio E. Camblong May 2002

Renormalized Path Integral For The Two-Dimensional Δ-Function Interaction, Horacio E. Camblong

Physics and Astronomy

A path-integral approach for δ-function potentials is presented. Particular attention is paid to the two-dimensional case, which illustrates the realization of a quantum anomaly for a scale-invariant problem in quantum mechanics. Our treatment is based on an infinite summation of perturbation theory that captures the nonperturbative nature of the δ-function bound state. The well-known singular character of the two-dimensional δ-function potential is dealt with by considering the renormalized path integral resulting from a variety of schemes: dimensional, momentum-cutoff, and real-space regularization. Moreover, compatibility of the bound-state and scattering sectors is shown.

Thermochronological Evolution Of Calcite Formation At The Potential Yucca Mountain Repository Site, Nevada: Part 2 Fluid Inclusion Analyses And Upb Dating, Jean S. Cline, Amy J. Smiecinski, Robert Bodnar May 2002

Thermochronological Evolution Of Calcite Formation At The Potential Yucca Mountain Repository Site, Nevada: Part 2 Fluid Inclusion Analyses And Upb Dating, Jean S. Cline, Amy J. Smiecinski, Robert Bodnar

Publications (YM)

The presence of two-phase fluid inclusions in thin secondary mineral crusts at the potential Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository has raised questions regarding the origin, timing, and temperature of past fluid flow through the repository horizon. The geologically recent passage of fluids with high temperatures would call into question the suitability of the site for the storage of high level nuclear waste. This study determined the thermal history of fluid flow through the site using fluid inclusion analyses and constrained the timing of thermal fluids by dating silica minerals spatially associated with the fluid inclusions using U-Pb techniques. Results provide …

Improving Speech Recognition Learning Through Lazy Training, Tony R. Martinez, Michael E. Rimer, D. Randall Wilson May 2002

Improving Speech Recognition Learning Through Lazy Training, Tony R. Martinez, Michael E. Rimer, D. Randall Wilson

Faculty Publications

Multi-layer backpropagation, like most learning algorithms that can create complex decision surfaces, is prone to overfitting. We present a novel approach, called lazy training, for reducing the overfit in multiple-layer networks. Lazy training consistently reduces generalization error of optimized neural networks by more than half on a large OCR dataset and on several real world problems from the UCI machine learning database repository. Here, lazy training is shown to be effective in a multi-layered adaptive learning system, reducing the error of an optimized backpropagation network in a speech recognition system by 50.0% on the TIDIGITS corpus.

Network Simplification Through Oracle Learning, Tony R. Martinez, Joshua Menke, Adam Peterson, Michael E. Rimer May 2002

Network Simplification Through Oracle Learning, Tony R. Martinez, Joshua Menke, Adam Peterson, Michael E. Rimer

Faculty Publications

Often the best artificial neural network to solve a real world problem is relatively complex. However, with the growing popularity of smaller computing devices (handheld computers, cellular telephones, automobile interfaces, etc.), there is a need for simpler models with comparable accuracy. The following research presents evidence that using a larger model as an oracle to train a smaller model on unlabeled data results in 1) a simpler acceptable model and 2) improved results over standard training methods on a similarly sized smaller model. On automated spoken digit recognition, oracle learning resulted in an artificial neural network of half the size …

Optimization By Varied Beam Search In Hopfield Networks, Tony R. Martinez, Xinchuan Zeng May 2002

Optimization By Varied Beam Search In Hopfield Networks, Tony R. Martinez, Xinchuan Zeng

Faculty Publications

This paper shows that the performance of the Hopfield network for solving optimization problems can be improved by a varied beam search algorithm. The algorithm varies the beam search size and beam intensity during the network relaxation process. It consists of two stages: increasing the beam search parameters in the flrst stage and then decreasing them in the second stage. The purpose of using such a scheme is to provide the network with a better chance to find more and better solutions. A large number of simulation results based on 200 randomly generated city distributions of the 10-city traveling salesman …

The parity nonconserving spin rotation of neutrons in the 0.734-eV p-wave resonance of La-139 was measured with the neutron transmission method. Two optically polarized He-3 cells were used before and behind a 5-cm long La-139 target, each as a polarizer and an analyzer for neutron spin. The rotation angle was carefully measured by flipping the direction of He-3 polarization in the polarizer in sequence. The peak-to-peak value of the spin rotation was determined to be (7.4+/-1.1) x 10(-3) rad/cm. The result is found to be consistent with the previous experiments, but the result was statistically improved. The s-p mixing model …

Thermochronological Evolution Of Calcite Formation At The Proposed Yucca Mountain Repository Site, Nevada: Part 1, Secondary Mineral Paragenesis And Geochemistry, Jean S. Cline, Amy J. Smiecinski, Robert Bodnar

Publications (YM)

In the near future a decision will be made as to whether or not Yucca Mountain, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada is a suitable site for a permanent, underground, high level nuclear waste repository. A major factor in determining the suitability of Yucca Mountain as a repository is the potential for the site to be flooded by water during the regulatory lifetime. The current study was undertaken to examine the past fluid history at the site, to gain a better understanding of the possibility of flooding in the near geologic future. To estimate the past fluid flux into …

A Finite-Element Model Of Basal Water Generated By Melting In An Ice Sheet Model, James L. Fastook May 2002

A Finite-Element Model Of Basal Water Generated By Melting In An Ice Sheet Model, James L. Fastook

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

It is well known that water is produced at the bed of an ice sheet when the temperature of the bed reaches the pressure melting point. The current ice sheet model, with its ability to calculate temperatures throughout the ice sheet, is also able to calculate melt rates at the bed. By incorporating a model of the continuity equation for the basal-water flow, this project will attempt to follow the movement of this water under the ice sheet as it flows from source regions to sink regions. The ability to predict wet-based regions is important to the understanding of the …

David Sellmyer Publications

The magnetic properties of nanocomposite multilayer magnets of the (Nd,Dy)(Fe,Co,Nb,B) 5.5/M (M = Co,FeCo) on Ti-buffered Si substrates have been investigated. X-ray diffraction results reveal that the Nd2Fe14B-type phase in almost all the films is randomly oriented. Different thickness x (nm) for Co layers and y (nm) for FeCo layers were adopted in the multilayers. It is found that high remanence is achieved in the nanocomposite multilayer films consisting of the Nd2Fe14B-type phase and soft magnetic phase for Co with 6≥x≥4 and for FeCo with 10≥y≥6. The …

L10,(001)-Oriented Fept:B2O3 Composite Films For Perpendicular Recording, M.L. Yan, H. Zeng, Nathan D. Powers, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

A multilayered deposition structure was developed for fabricating FePt:B2O3 films. We successfully obtained nanostructured FePt:B2O3 films with FePt grains aligned perpendicular to film plane by postannealing the as-deposited multilayers at 550 °C for 30 min. It was found that development of (001) texture depends strongly on the total film thickness, initial B2O3 layer thickness, and Fe concentration. Nearly perfect (001) orientation of FePt-ordered grains can be obtained in the films with small total film thickness, large initial B2O3 layer thickness, and slightly higher Fe concentration. Our results show …

Magnetic Force Microscopy Observations Of The Magnetic Behavior In Co–C Nanodot Arrays, L. Gao, Sy_Hwang Liou, M. Zheng, Ralph Skomski, M.L. Yan, David J. Sellmyer, N.I. Polushkin May 2002

Magnetic Force Microscopy Observations Of The Magnetic Behavior In Co–C Nanodot Arrays, L. Gao, Sy_Hwang Liou, M. Zheng, Ralph Skomski, M.L. Yan, David J. Sellmyer, N.I. Polushkin

David Sellmyer Publications

The nanomagnetic behavior of Co–C nanodot arrays was investigated by magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and an alternative gradient force magnetometer. The direction of the easy axis can be observed directly with MFM by comparing the saturated magnetization state and the remanent magnetization state. Interaction of the domain wall with local defects was observed by field dependent MFM measurements. Some types of defects that can pin domain wall movement were identified.

We present our recent simulated results on Cr (5 nm)/ Cu (5 nm)/ Co (5 nm)/ Cu (3 nm)/ Co (2 nm) pseudo-spin valve dots. The simulated results agree qualitatively with the experimental results. Three different sizes of elliptical dots, and were simulated. Our simulations show that in these types of dots magnetization reversal occurs by the formation of domain walls: for and for No domain wall was observed in the reversal of the dots. For such dots, the simulated loops show a small two-step reversal pattern with the thin upper layer partially reversing followed by complete reversal of both …

Representing Homology Classes Of Simply Connected 4-Manifolds, Vo Thanh Liem, Gerard A. Venema

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The main theorem asserts that every 2-dimensional homology class of a compact simply connected PL 4-manifold can be represented by a codimension-0 submanifold consisting of a contractible manifold with a single 2-handle attached. One consequence of the theorem is the fact that every map of S2 into a simply connected, compact PL 4-manifold is homotopic to an embedding if and only if the same is true for every homotopy equivalence. The theorem is also the main ingredient in the proof of the following result: If W is a compact, simply connected, PL submanifold of S4, then each element of H2(W;ℤ) …

Exact Nucleation Modes In Arrays Of Magnetic Particles, Ralph Skomski May 2002

Exact Nucleation Modes In Arrays Of Magnetic Particles, Ralph Skomski

Ralph Skomski Publications

Magnetization reversal in arrays of magnetic nanoparticles with perpendicular anisotropy is investigated. Aside from domain-wall propagation effects, the reversal involves two main aspects: the nucleation behavior of individual particles and interparticle interactions. Due to magnetostatic self-interaction effects, the interparticle interaction cannot be reduced to a stray-field correction to the external field. Exact nucleation fields and explicit stray-field and self-interaction contributions are obtained for rings of equidistant dots. An exact treatment of self-interactions in various structurally inhomogeneous but rotationally symmetric wire, sphere, and thin-film nanostructures leads to renormalization of the uniaxial anisotropy. Finally, an approximate method to calculate nucleation fields is …

CrO2 thin films with crystallites of a significant size permit investigation of the thin intergrain conduction between a limited numbers of crystals. Phoemission techniques reveal that the CrO2 films are covered by a 1–2-nm-thick Cr2O3 insulating barrier. The electronic band gap of the surface electrons is 3.4 eV at low temperatures, decreases sharply down to 2.8 eV at ambient. Electric transport though a few junctions in series shows a remarkable zero-bias anomaly, interpreted in terms of blockade effects. We show that the magnetoresistance is governed by low-bias blockade in these junctions. © 2002 American Institute …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Magnetization vs temperature behavior of RuSr2GdCu2O8-δ (Ru-1212) measured in an field of 5 Oe, shows a clear branching of zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) curves around 140 K, a cusp at 135 K, and a diamagnetic transition around 20 K (in the ZFC branch). The cusp at 135 K is due to the antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ru moments. The magnetization-field isotherms, below 50 K, show a nonlinear contribution from a ferromagnetic component. The resistance vs temperature behavior of the compound, in applied fields of 0, 3, and 7 T, confirms that the sample is …

Magnetic and neutron diffraction studies have been carried out on PrMnSb2. Magnetization data in the temperature range of 5-400 K show two magnetic transitions: one at ∼175 K attributed to the antiferromagnetic ordering of the Mn moments, and the other at ∼35 K possibly due to the antiferromagnetic ordering of the Pr moments. The magnetization-field isotherms at various temperatures are consistent with the above. Neutron diffraction data obtained at various temperatures can be fitted with a nearly antiferromagnetically coupled Mn moment of ∼3μB at 70 K. At 10 K, moments both on Mn (∼3.5μB) and …

The Finite-Temperature Densities Of States For Half-Metallic Ferromagnets, Ralph Skomski, Peter A. Dowben May 2002

The Finite-Temperature Densities Of States For Half-Metallic Ferromagnets, Ralph Skomski, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

A unitary spinor transformation is used to show that the spin-down density of states (DOS) of half-metallic ferromagnets becomes nonzero at finite temperatures. In a strict sense, this thermally activated spin mixing means that half-metallic ferromagnetism is limited to zero temperature. Similar effects are created by crystal imperfections, interfaces, and surfaces. The calculations, which imply that the finite-temperature resistivity of an individual spin channel is never infinite, are used to discuss recent experimental work on half-metallic oxides and Heusler-type alloys.
