Modification Of Surface Properties Of Polymeric Materials, Rajesh Sharma, Robert A. Sims, Malay K. Mazumder Jan 2002

Modification Of Surface Properties Of Polymeric Materials, Rajesh Sharma, Robert A. Sims, Malay K. Mazumder

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Polymeric materials are successfully used in virtually all industries ranging from semiconductors, and coatings, to household appliances, automotive, and biomedical implants. Polymers generally have excellent bulk physical and chemical properties. However, certain properties of polymers such as low surface energy, low wettability, and high electrical resistivity sometimes limit their applications. Changing the bulk formulation of the polymers can alter some of these properties, but in general this is not acceptable as it can affect "desirable" bulk properties. Surface modification techniques have been used to alter polymer surfaces without affecting the bulk properties of the material. Most polymers have very high …

Role Of A Phase: Change Moho In Stabilization And Preservation Of The Southern Uralide Orogen, Russia, Camelia C. Diaconescu, James H. Knapp

Faculty Publications

Geophysical (URSEIS experiment) and geological data from the Southern Uralides of central Russia provide the basis for a geodynamic model involving eclogitization of the Uralian crustal root in Late Triassic to Early Jurassic time as a mechanism for stabilization and preservation of this Paleozoic orogen. The crustal structure of the orogen implies eastward subduction of the East European continental crust, and balanced restoration implies a significant volume of crust (comprised of ~70% European crust, and ~30% accreted terranes) was carried to sub-Moho depths of up to 70 km. The lack of a clearly defined near-vertical incidence reflection Moho corroborated by …

Illinois River Phosphorus Sampling Results And Mass Balance Computation, Marc Nelson, K.L. White, T.S. Soerens Jan 2002

Illinois River Phosphorus Sampling Results And Mass Balance Computation, Marc Nelson, K.L. White, T.S. Soerens

Technical Reports

Phosphorus levels in the Illinois River are of great interest to the people of the States of Arkansas and Oklahoma. A great deal of effort has been expended to ascertain and modify the phosphorus impacts on the river. An automatic water sampling station was installed on the Illinois River just upstream from the State line in 1996 to accurately quantify the phosphorus in the Arkansas portion of the watershed. This paper summarizes five years worth of phosphorus sampling results at that site. In addition, a simple mass balance for phosphorus in the Illinois River Watershed above the sampling station was …

Use Of High Pressure Liquid Chromatography To Detect And Quantify Oxytetracycline Marks In Walleye Otoliths And Dorsal Spines, Michael J. Hawkins Jan 2002

Use Of High Pressure Liquid Chromatography To Detect And Quantify Oxytetracycline Marks In Walleye Otoliths And Dorsal Spines, Michael J. Hawkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Oxytetracycline (OTC) is used to chemically mark calcified structures in walleye Stizostedion vitreum fry and fingerlings. Current visual methods for detection of these marks are subjective, and biologists are unable to quantify the amount of OTC in a sample. The goal of this study was to determine if high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) is a feasible and superior alternative for detecting and quantifying OTC in otoliths of fry-marked and spines of fingerlingmarked walleyes. Study objectives were to validate methodology of extraction of OTC from calcified tissue, detect and quantify extracted OTC using HPLC, and determine a cost comparison of current …

Novel Bis-Arene (Sandwich) Complexes With No+ Acceptor. Isolation, X-Ray Crystallography And Electronic Structure, Sergiy V. Rosokha, Sergey V. Lindeman, Jay K. Kochi Jan 2002

Novel Bis-Arene (Sandwich) Complexes With No+ Acceptor. Isolation, X-Ray Crystallography And Electronic Structure, Sergiy V. Rosokha, Sergey V. Lindeman, Jay K. Kochi

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The unusual charge-transfer complexes of various arene donors (ArH) with the nitrosonium cation (NO+) resulting from bimolecular [1 ∶ 1] associations can be extended at suitably high ArH concentrations to termolecular processes leading to the analogous [2 ∶ 1] complexes. Spectral analyses of the intense color changes accompanying the arene interaction with NO+ provide optimum conditions for the isolation of pure crystalline ternary complexes. Single crystal X-ray crystallographic determinations establish the unique sandwich structure consisting of the NO moiety interposed (parallel) between a pair of cofacial arene donors—reminiscent of the well-known transition metal sandwich complexes with aromatic …

Molecular Structures Of The Metastable Charge-Transfer Complexes Of Benzene (And Toluene) With Bromine As The Pre-Reactive Intermediates In Electrophilic Aromatic Bromination, Alexandr V. Vasilyev, Sergey V. Lindeman, Jay K. Kochi Jan 2002

Kochi

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Successful crystallization and X-ray crystallographic analyses of the highly metastable (1∶1) complexes of bromine with benzene and toluene establish the unique (localized) structure B that differs in notable ways from the long-accepted (delocalized) structure A. Furthermore, we demonstrate the (highly structured) charge-transfer complexes [C6H6,Br2] and [CH3C6H5,Br2] to be the pre-reactive intermediates that are converted (via an overall Br+ transfer) to the Wheland intermediates in electrophilic aromatic bromination. The role of the dative ion pairs [C6H6˙+ Br2˙ …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

During an international workshop at the Institute for Experimental Physics of the University of Vienna, Austria, which was coordinated within the Committee on Nucleation and Atmospheric Aerosols (IAMAS-IUGG), 10 instruments for aerosol number concentration measurement were studied, covering a wide range of methods based on various different measuring principles. In order to investigate the detection limits of the instruments considered with respect to particle size, simultaneous number concentration measurements were performed for monodispersed aerosols with particle sizes ranging from 1.5 to 50 nm diameter and various compositions. The instruments considered show quite different response characteristics, apparently related to the different …

Variation In Overstory Nitrogen Uptake In A Small, High-Elevation Southern Appalachian Spruce-Fir Watershed, M. Barker, H. Van Miegroet, N. S. Nicholas, I. F. Creed Jan 2002

Variation In Overstory Nitrogen Uptake In A Small, High-Elevation Southern Appalachian Spruce-Fir Watershed, M. Barker, H. Van Miegroet, N. S. Nicholas, I. F. Creed

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

High-elevation red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) – Fraser fir (Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir.) forests of the southern Appalachians exhibit considerable spatial heterogeneity in structure, and possibly in N uptake, because of a combination of natural disturbances and heavy fir mortality caused by infestations of the exotic balsam woolly adelgid (Adelges piceae Ratz). The objectives of this study are to determine spatial variability in tree N uptake in a small high-elevation catchment in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, compare outcomes among calculation methods, and assess the influence of stand and landscape properties on N uptake. Tree N uptake is estimated …

Incorporating Aspects Into The Software Development Process In Context Of Aspect-Oriented Programming, Mark Alan Basch Jan 2002

Incorporating Aspects Into The Software Development Process In Context Of Aspect-Oriented Programming, Mark Alan Basch

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Aspect-oriented programming is a relatively new approach to programming that is design to resolve issues of separation of concerns. Rather than focusing on commonality of objects, as in object-oriented programming, aspect –oriented programming focuses on commonality of concerns, or more precisely as described by experts in the field, of "cross-cutting concerns." These are aspects that cut across different modules of a program, such as security and authentication issues.

While much research in the area has focused on developing programming languages, little attention has been given to dealing with aspects in the software development process and the Unified Modeling Language. This …

Temperature Dependence Of Silicon Carrier Effective Masses With Application To Femtosecondreflectivity Measurements, D. Mark Riffe Jan 2002

Temperature Dependence Of Silicon Carrier Effective Masses With Application To Femtosecondreflectivity Measurements, D. Mark Riffe

All Physics Faculty Publications

The conductivity effective masses of electrons and holes in Si are calculated for carrier temperatures from 1 to 3000 K. The temperature dependence of the electron mass is calculated by use of a phenomenological model of conduction-band nonparabolicity that has been fitted to experimental measurements of the dependence of the electron conductivity effective mass on carrier concentration. The hole mass is investigated by tight-binding calculations of the valence bands, which have been adjusted to match experimental values of the valence-band curvature parameters at the top of the valence band. The calculations are in excellent agreement with femtosecond-laser reflectivity measurements of …

Unequal Arm Space-Borne Gravitational Wave Detectors, Shane L. Larson, Ronald W. Hellings, William A. Hiscock Jan 2002

Unequal Arm Space-Borne Gravitational Wave Detectors, Shane L. Larson, Ronald W. Hellings, William A. Hiscock

All Physics Faculty Publications

Unlike ground-based interferometric gravitational wave detectors, large space-based systems will not be rigid structures. When the end stations of the laser interferometer are freely flying spacecraft, the armlengths will change due to variations in the spacecraft positions along their orbital trajectories, so the precise equality of the arms that is required in a laboratory interferometer to cancel laser phase noise is not possible. However, using a method discovered by Tinto and Armstrong, a signal can be constructed in which laser phase noise exactly cancels out, even in an unequal arm interferometer. We examine the case where the ratio of the …

Quantum Dynamics Of The Polarized Gowdy T3 Model, Charles G. Torre Jan 2002

Quantum Dynamics Of The Polarized Gowdy T3 Model, Charles G. Torre

All Physics Faculty Publications

The polarized Gowdy T3 vacuum spacetimes are characterized, modulo gauge, by a “point particle” degree of freedom and a function φ that satisfies a linear field equation and a nonlinear constraint. The quantum Gowdy model has been defined by using a representation for φ on a Fock space F. Using this quantum model, it has recently been shown that the dynamical evolution determined by the linear field equation for φ is not unitarily implemented on F. In this paper, (1) we derive the classical and quantum model using the “covariant phase space” formalism, (2) we show that time evolution is …

Relative Solar And Auroral Contribution To The Polar F Region: Implications For National Space Weather Program, Michael David, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, R. Heelis Jan 2002

Relative Solar And Auroral Contribution To The Polar F Region: Implications For National Space Weather Program, Michael David, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, R. Heelis

All Physics Faculty Publications

When plasma in the polar cap F region becomes highly structured, patches, irregularities, and scintillations of HF signals may be observed. The topic of this paper is not the mechanism for structuring or distributing the plasma but rather the source of the plasma. By understanding the plasma source we gain insight into the specification and forecasting of ionospheric structures and irregularities as required for space weather applications. The two major sources of polar cap F region plasma are the solar EUV radiation and the auroral precipitation. The region over which solar EUV production occurs is readily modeled. In contrast, the …

The Lisa Optimal Sensitivity, Thomas A. Prince, Massimo Tinto, Shane L. Larson, J. W. Armstrong Jan 2002

The Lisa Optimal Sensitivity, Thomas A. Prince, Massimo Tinto, Shane L. Larson, J. W. Armstrong

All Physics Faculty Publications

The multiple Doppler readouts available on the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) permit simultaneous formation of several interferometric observables. All these observables are independent of laser frequency fluctuations and have different couplings to gravitational waves and to the various LISA instrumental noises. Within the functional space of interferometric combinations LISA will be able to synthesize, we have identified a triplet of interferometric combinations that show optimally combined sensitivity. As an application of the method, we computed the sensitivity improvement for sinusoidal sources in the nominal, equal-arm LISA configuration. In the part of the Fourier band where the period of the …

Calculation Of Spectral Degradation Due To Contaminant Films On Infrared And Optical Sensors, L. Gamble, John R. Dennison, B. Wood, J. Herrick, J. S. Dyer Jan 2002

Calculation Of Spectral Degradation Due To Contaminant Films On Infrared And Optical Sensors, L. Gamble, John R. Dennison, B. Wood, J. Herrick, J. S. Dyer

All Physics Faculty Publications

Molecular surface contaminants can cause degradation of optical systems, especially if the contaminants exhibit strong absorption bands in the region of interest. Different strategies for estimation of spectral degradation responses due to uniform films for various types of systems are reviewed. One tool for calculating the effects of contaminant film thickness on signal degradation in the mid IR region is the simulation program CALCRT. The CALCRT database will be reviewed to correlate spectral n and k values associated with specific classes of organic functional groups. Various schemes are also investigated to estimate the spectral degradation in the UV-Vis region. Experimental …

The Principle Of Symmetric Criticality In General Relativity, Mark E. Fels, Charles G. Torre Jan 2002

The Principle Of Symmetric Criticality In General Relativity, Mark E. Fels, Charles G. Torre

All Physics Faculty Publications

We consider a version of Palais' principle of symmetric criticality (PSC) that is applicable to the Lie symmetry reduction of Lagrangian field theories. Given a group action on a space of fields, PSC asserts that for any group-invariant Lagrangian, the equations obtained by restriction of Euler–Lagrange equations to group-invariant fields are equivalent to the Euler–Lagrange equations of a canonically defined, symmetry-reduced Lagrangian. We investigate the validity of PSC for local gravitational theories built from a metric and show that there are two independent conditions which must be satisfied for PSC to be valid. One of these conditions, obtained previously in …

Transverse Group Actions On Bundles, Ian M. Anderson, Mark E. Fels Jan 2002

Transverse Group Actions On Bundles, Ian M. Anderson, Mark E. Fels

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

An action of a Lie group G on a bundle is said to be transverse if it is projectable and if the orbits of G on E are diffeomorphic under π to the orbits of G on M. Transverse group actions on bundles are completely classified in terms of the pullback bundle construction for G-invariant maps. This classification result is used to give a full characterization of the G invariant sections of E for projectable group actions.

Development And Validation Of Spatially Explicit Habitat Models For Cavity-Nesting Birds In Fishlake National Forest, Utah, Randall J. Schultz, Jr., Thomas C. Edwards, Jr., Gretchen G. Molsen, Tracey S. Frescino Jan 2002

Development And Validation Of Spatially Explicit Habitat Models For Cavity-Nesting Birds In Fishlake National Forest, Utah, Randall J. Schultz, Jr., Thomas C. Edwards, Jr., Gretchen G. Molsen, Tracey S. Frescino

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The ability of USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and analysis (FIA) generated spatial products to increase the predictive accuracy of spatially explicit, macroscale habitat models was examined for nest-site selection by cavity-nesting birds in Fishlake National Forest, Utah. One FIA-derived variable (percent basal area of aspen trees) was significant in the habitat model; however, the incorporation of FIA stand structure information did not increase model accuracy. Cavity-nesting birds respond strongly to nest-tree attributes unable to be modeled spatially for this study. Future modeling efforts should focus on larger taxa (e.g., ungulates) and richness/diversity studies.

A Note On Interpolation In The Generalized Schur Class. I. Applications Of Realization Theory, Daniel Alpay, T. Constantinescu, A. Dijksma, J. Rovnyak, A. Dijksma

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Realization theory for operator colligations on Pontryagin spaces is used to study interpolation and factorization in generalized Schur classes. Several criteria are derived which imply that a given function is almost the restriction of a generalized Schur function. The role of realization theory in coefficient problems is also discussed; a solution of an indefinite Carathéodory-Fejér problem is obtained, as well as a result that relates the number of negative (positive) squares of the reproducing kernels associated with the canonical coisometric, isometric, and unitary realizations of a generalized Schur function to the number of negative (positive) eigenvalues of matrices derived from …

Assessing Vulnerability To Agricultural Drought: A Nebraska Case Study, Olga V. Wilhelmi, Donald A. Wilhite Jan 2002

Assessing Vulnerability To Agricultural Drought: A Nebraska Case Study, Olga V. Wilhelmi, Donald A. Wilhite

Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Recent drought events in the United States and the magnitude of drought losses indicate the continuing vulnerability of the country to drought. Until recently, drought management in many states, including Nebraska, has been largely response oriented with little or no attention to mitigation and preparedness. In 1998, Nebraska began to revise its drought plan in order to place more emphasis on mitigation. One of the main aspects of drought mitigation and planning is the assessment of who and what is vulnerable and why. This paper presents a method for spatial, Geographic Information Systems-based assessment of agricultural drought vulnerability in Nebraska. …

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

The Brownfields One Stop Shop (BOSS) is the culmination of a process created over a year ago that brought together several federal and local public agencies to address the complexities of applying resources to support brownfields redevelopment. The idea was originally developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 5 brownfields Project Manager, Edwin Smith, and by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Cleveland Office Community Builder, Paul Diegelman. Together, they developed an initial concept for a collaborative introductory meeting, and presented the idea to the Cleveland Federal Executive Board members. The project was accepted as …

Nonparametric Estimation Of A Distribution Subject To A Stochastic Precedence Constraint, Miguel A. Arcones, Paul H. Kvam, Francisco J. Samaniego Jan 2002

Nonparametric Estimation Of A Distribution Subject To A Stochastic Precedence Constraint, Miguel A. Arcones, Paul H. Kvam, Francisco J. Samaniego

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

For any two random variables X and Y with distributions F and G defined on [0,∞), X is said to stochastically precede Y if P(XY) ≥ 1/2. For independent X and Y, stochastic precedence (denoted by XspY) is equivalent to E[G(X–)] ≤ 1/2. The applicability of stochastic precedence in various statistical contexts, including reliability modeling, tests for distributional equality versus various alternatives, and the relative performance of comparable tolerance bounds, is discussed. The problem of estimating the underlying distribution(s) of experimental data under the assumption that they obey a …

The Algebra And Geometry Of Curve And Surface Inversion, Thomas W. Sederberg, Eng-Wee Chionh, Kent Ridge Jan 2002

The Algebra And Geometry Of Curve And Surface Inversion, Thomas W. Sederberg, Eng-Wee Chionh, Kent Ridge

Faculty Publications

An inversion equation takes the Cartesian coordinates of a point on a parametric curve or surface and returns the parameter value(s) of that point. A 2-D curve inversion equation has the form t = f(x,y)/g(x,y). This paper shows that practical insight into inversion can be obtained by studying the geometry of the implicit curves f(x,y) = 0 and g(x,y) = 0. For example, the relationship between the singular locus of the parametric curve and the lowest possible degree of an inversion equation can be understood in this way. Also, insight is given into what parameter value will be returned if …

A New Occurrence Of Archaeoscyphia Pulchra (Bassler) From The Ordovician Of Western Canada, J. Keith Rigby, Godfrey S. Nowlan, Peter A. Rowlands

Faculty Publications

A few specimens of the ornate anthaspidellid demosponge, Archaeoscyphia pulchra (Bassler), have been collected from the Lower Ordovician Outram Formation or Skoki Formation, from a saddle at the head of South Rice Brook in northeastern British Columbia. This is the first report of the flanged-appearing annulate, steeply obconical sponge in western Canada, although it has been reported from the Mingan Islands of Quebec and was initially described from Nevada, in the western United States. The taxon has also been reported as other species of Archaeoscyphia from Ordovician rocks of Missouri and from the San Juan region of Argentina.
