Climatology And Storm Time Dependence Ofnighttime Thermospheric Neutral Winds Over Millstone Hill, Bela G. Fejer, J. T. Emmert, D. P. Sipler Jan 2002

Climatology And Storm Time Dependence Ofnighttime Thermospheric Neutral Winds Over Millstone Hill, Bela G. Fejer, J. T. Emmert, D. P. Sipler

Bela G. Fejer

[1] We use 630.0 nm nightglow Fabry-Perot measurements over Millstone Hill from 1989–1999 to study the climatology and storm time dependence of the midlatitude thermospheric winds. Our quiet time wind patterns are consistent with results from earlier studies. We determine the perturbation winds by subtracting from each measurement the corresponding quiet time averages. The climatological zonal disturbance winds are largely independent of season and solar flux and show large early night westward and small late-night eastward winds similar to disturbance ion drifts. The meridional perturbation winds vary strongly with season and solar flux. When the solar flux is low, the …

Electronic Structure And Bonding In Metal Porphyrins, Metal=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, M.-S. Liao, Steve Scheiner Jan 2002

Electronic Structure And Bonding In Metal Porphyrins, Metal=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, M.-S. Liao, Steve Scheiner

Steve Scheiner

A systematic theoretical study of the electronic structure and bonding in metal meso-tetraphenyl porphines MTPP, M=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn has been carried out using a density functional theory method. The calculations provide a clear elucidation of the ground states for the MTPPs and for a series of [MTPP]x ions (x = 2+, 1+, 1−, 2−, 3−, 4−), which aids in understanding a number of observed electronic properties. The calculation supports the experimental assignment of unligated FeTPP as 3A2g, which arises from the configuration (dxy)2(dz …

Electronic Structure And Bonding In Unligated And Ligated Feii Porphyrins, M.-S. Liao, Steve Scheiner Jan 2002

Electronic Structure And Bonding In Unligated And Ligated Feii Porphyrins, M.-S. Liao, Steve Scheiner

Steve Scheiner

The electronic structure and bonding in a series of unligated and ligated FeII porphyrins (FeP) are investigated by density functional theory (DFT). All the unligated four-coordinate iron porphyrins have a 3A2g ground state that arises from the (dxy)2(dz2)2(dπ)2 configuration. The calculations confirm experimental results on Fe tetraphenylporphine but do not support the resonance Raman assignment of Fe octaethylporphine as 3Eg, nor the early assignment of Fe octamethyltetrabenzporphine as 5B2g. For the six-coordinate Fe–P( …

Using An Expectation‐Maximization Algorithm To Obtain Dielectric Relaxation Time Spectra Ofaqueous Montmorillonite Clay Suspensions, Stephen E. Bialkowski, Lynn Dudley, Dani Or Jan 2002

Using An Expectation‐Maximization Algorithm To Obtain Dielectric Relaxation Time Spectra Ofaqueous Montmorillonite Clay Suspensions, Stephen E. Bialkowski, Lynn Dudley, Dani Or

Stephen E. Bialkowski

Determination of relaxation-time distributions from dielectric spectra of complex impedance or dielectric permittivity remains a challenge. This problem is one of a wider class of ill-posed inverse problems where the measurement is a superposition or convolution of functions containing the sought-after information. An expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is shown to be useful for obtaining dielectric relaxation-time distributions from impedance data. This algorithm is stable and converges to realistic relaxation-time spectra without the need for constraints or initial values. The implementation used herein updates expectations in an iterative multiplication step. The models and basic assumptions of impedance spectroscopy are outlined in the …

This paper describes work done to explore the common ground between two different ongoing research projects: the standardization of lexical and terminological resources, and the use of conceptual ontologies for information extraction and data integration. Specifically, this paper explores improving the generation of extraction ontologies through use of a comprehensive terminology database that has been represented in a standardized format for easy tool-based implementation. We show how, via the successful integration of these two distinct efforts, it is possible to leverage large-scale terminological and conceptual information having relationship-rich semantic resources in order to reformulate, match, and merge retrieved information of …

Origin Of Salinity Variations In Florida Bay, P. K. Swart, René M. Price Jan 2002

Origin Of Salinity Variations In Florida Bay, P. K. Swart, René M. Price

FCE LTER Journal Articles

This note presents a method of distinguishing the source of freshwater that causes reductions in salinity in the coastal environment of South Florida. This technique, which uses the 18O and D of the water, allows for differentiation of the freshwater derived from precipitation as opposed to runoff, because surface waters in the Everglades have been highly evaporated and therefore have elevated 18O and dD values relative to precipitation. A time series of monthly 18O and D values of surface waters, collected from stations in Florida Bay between 1993 and 1999, has shown that, during this time, the …

Reduction Of Dendrite Formations To Improve The Appearance Of The Powder Cured Films For Automotive Industry, Alexandru S. Biris, C. U. Yurteri, Malay K. Mazumder, Robert A. Sims, P. H. Williams Jan 2002

Reduction Of Dendrite Formations To Improve The Appearance Of The Powder Cured Films For Automotive Industry, Alexandru S. Biris, C. U. Yurteri, Malay K. Mazumder, Robert A. Sims, P. H. Williams

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The appearance of powder-coated films is dependent upon powder chemistry and spraying parameters. One of the most important physical factors controlling the powder film appearance is the microdeposition of the powder particles on the grounded substrate. During the electrostatic deposition of powder, the formation of dendrites and agglomerates was observed; these formations have an adverse effect on the final film appearance and their elimination may result in smoother and glossier films. Dendrites are generated due to bipolar charging and inter-particulate electrostatic attractive forces. The corona charging technique is mostly used in industrial powder coating applications. At low corona voltages (- …

Electrostatic Microencapsulation Of Composite Particulate Materials For Manufacturing And Environmental Applications, S. De, M. Pritchett, Malay K. Mazumder, Robert A. Sims, C. U. Yurteri, Alexandru S. Biris, A. Rego Jan 2002

Electrostatic Microencapsulation Of Composite Particulate Materials For Manufacturing And Environmental Applications, S. De, M. Pritchett, Malay K. Mazumder, Robert A. Sims, C. U. Yurteri, Alexandru S. Biris, A. Rego

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Electrostatic microencapsulation is a dry coating process where two powders, one containing the fines and the other relatively larger particles, are separately dispersed in air and pre-charged with opposite polarity, using corona charging for electrostatic coagulation. These oppositely charged core and guest particles experience attractive electrostatic forces and generate composite particles. Preliminary experiments of electrostatic microencapsulation were performed using Anionic Exchange Resin (AG 1-X8) as the host particle and Red Toner (Omega 4000) as the guest particles. An electrostatic microencapsulation tower has been designed for generation of composite particles using particles of different particle size distribution.

Modal Predicates And Coequations, Alexander Kurz, Jiří Rosický Jan 2002

Modal Predicates And Coequations, Alexander Kurz, Jiří Rosický

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We show how coalgebras can be presented by operations and equations. This is a special case of Linton’s approach to algebras over a general base category X, namely where X is taken as the dual of sets. Since the resulting equations generalise coalgebraic coequations to situations without cofree coalgebras, we call them coequations. We prove a general co-Birkhoff theorem describing covarieties of coalgebras by means of coequations. We argue that the resulting coequational logic generalises modal logic.

A Dynamic Simulation Model Of Beach Sand Replenishment: A Case Study Of Santa Barbara, California, David Turbow, Steve Norwick, Sajjad Ahmad Jan 2002

A Dynamic Simulation Model Of Beach Sand Replenishment: A Case Study Of Santa Barbara, California, David Turbow, Steve Norwick, Sajjad Ahmad

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

Sediment deprivation from dam installments contributes to beach erosion yet the underlying physical and economic factors linking them together have traditionally been isolated during regional planning. In order to gain a better understanding of the behavior of a managed beach system, a dynamic simulation model was developed incorporating physical and monetary factors influencing the amount of available beach sand. The Santa Barbara littoral cell was chosen as a case study to evaluate the feasibility of beach preservation goals under scenarios in which annual sand replenishment funding, sand prices, or sediment recovery from behind dams were limiting factors to available beach …

The Synthesis Of Bromoethoxy And Vinylbenzyloxy Substituted Nlo Chromophores, Michael Joseph Matuszewski Jan 2002

The Synthesis Of Bromoethoxy And Vinylbenzyloxy Substituted Nlo Chromophores, Michael Joseph Matuszewski

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Multiphoton-absorption processes have recently attracted growing interest because of the potential impact on a wide spectrum of applications, ranging from data storage to photodynamic therapy. From the materials standpoint, particular interest is centered in designing chromophores that exhibit a large two-photon cross-section. The current research is focused on establishing synthetic routes that lead to the formation of derivatives of N,N-diphenyl-(7-benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2-ylamine which contain meta functionalization. A bromoethoxy functionalized chromophore, N-phenyl-N-(3-(2-bromoethoxy)phenyl)-7-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren- 2-ylamine , was synthesized and used as a polymer pendent while a vinylbenzyloxy chromophore, N-phenyl-N-(3-(4-vinylbenzyloxy)phenyl)-7- (benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2-ylamine, was synthesized as a hydrosilation substrate. A compound containing three chromophores, 1,3,5-tris(3-(N-phenyl- 4-(7-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2- ylanilino)phenoxymethyl)benzene, has …

Topological Sweep In Degenerate Cases, Eynat Rafalin, Diane Souvaine, Ileana Streinu Jan 2002

Topological Sweep In Degenerate Cases, Eynat Rafalin, Diane Souvaine, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Topological sweep can contribute to efficient implementations of various algorithms for data analysis. Real data, however, has degeneracies. The modification of the topological sweep algorithm presented here handles degenerate cases such as parallel or multiply concurrent lines without requiring numerical perturbations to achieve general position. Our method maintains the 0(n2) and 0(n) time and space complexities of the original algorithm, and is robust and easy to implement. We present experimental results.

Vertex-Unfoldings Of Simplicial Manifolds, Erik D. Demaine, David Eppstein, Jeff Erickson, George W. Hart, Joseph O'Rourke Jan 2002

Vertex-Unfoldings Of Simplicial Manifolds, Erik D. Demaine, David Eppstein, Jeff Erickson, George W. Hart, Joseph O'Rourke

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We present an algorithm to unfold any triangulated 2-manifold (in particular, any simplicial polyhedron) into a non-overlapping, connected planar layout in linear time. The manifold is cut only along its edges. The resulting layout is connected, but it may have a disconnected interior; the triangles are connected at vertices, but not necessarily joined along edges. We extend our algorithm to establish a similar result for simplicial manifolds of arbitrary dimension.

Interlocked Open Linkages With Few Joints, Erik D. Demaine, Stefan Langerman, Joseph O'Rourke, Jack Snoeyink Jan 2002

Interlocked Open Linkages With Few Joints, Erik D. Demaine, Stefan Langerman, Joseph O'Rourke, Jack Snoeyink

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We advance the study of collections of open linkages in 3-space that may be interlocked in the sense that the linkages cannot be separated without one bar crossing through another. We consider chains of bars connected with rigid joints, revolute joints, or universal joints and explore the smallest number of chains and bars needed to achieve interlock. Whereas previous work used topological invariants that applied to single or to closed chains, this work relies on geometric invariants and concentrates on open chains.

Purification Of The Hmg1 Protein And Investigation Of Its Interactions With Diepoxide Cross-Linked Dna, Gayle Pageau Jan 2002

Purification Of The Hmg1 Protein And Investigation Of Its Interactions With Diepoxide Cross-Linked Dna, Gayle Pageau

Honors Theses

HMG1 is a nonhistone chromosomal protein that binds preferentially to some types of globally modified DNA. HMG1 has been implicated in the cellular response to the anti-cancer agent cisplatin, functioning to block excision repair of specific distorted platinated DNA lesions and resulting in enhanced cytotoxicity. We have investigated whether other DNA-binding agents also produce lesions that are recognized by HMG1. Specifically, we used polyacrylamide gel shift assays to monitor the potential HMG1 binding of diepoxybutane interstrand cross-links, which have been suggested to induce DNA bending. We isolated the native protein from chicken erythrocytes and expressed engineered HMG domain proteins in …

Historical Overview Of Tampa Bay Water Quality And Seagrass Issues And Trends, J.O. R. Johansson Jan 2002

Historical Overview Of Tampa Bay Water Quality And Seagrass Issues And Trends, J.O. R. Johansson

Reports

Historical (pre-1930s) seagrass meadows in Tampa Bay are believed to have covered 31,000 ha of the shallow bay bottom. Later, impacts to the bay from increasing population and industrial development of the Tampa Bay area have resulted in large seagrass losses. By 1982, approximately 8,800 ha of seagrass remained. Since 1982, Tampa Bay seagrass monitoring programs have recorded a reversal in the trend of seagrass loss, with the baywide seagrass cover increasing from 9,420 ha in 1988 to 10,890 ha in 1997. However, between 1997 and 1999 the trend again reversed with substantial losses recorded, specifically in the Old Tampa …

Subsidence Hazards In Different Types Of Karst: Evolutionary And Speleogenetic Approach, Alexander Klimchouk Jan 2002

Subsidence Hazards In Different Types Of Karst: Evolutionary And Speleogenetic Approach, Alexander Klimchouk

International Journal of Speleology

The typology of karst, based on distinguishing the successive stages of general hydrogeological evolution, between which major boundary conditions and the overall circulation pattern change considerably, gives a natural clue, properly to classify and tie together karst breakdown settings, speleogenetic styles and breakdown development mechanisms. Subsidence hazards vary substantially between the different karst types so that classifying individual karst according to typology can provide an integrated general assessment. This provides a useful basis for selection and realization of region- and site-specific assessment schemes and management strategies. Intrastratal karst types, subjacent karst in particular, are most potent in generating subsidence problems. …

Stability Appraisal Of The Medvedova Konta Pothole, Jože Kortnik Jan 2002

Stability Appraisal Of The Medvedova Konta Pothole, Jože Kortnik

International Journal of Speleology

Until 1956 the underground details of areas around Pokljuka were practically unknown due to the area’s non-karstic outward appearance. However, the presence of karst phenomena on this Alpine plain is undoubtedly indicated, primarily by the absence of a surface drainage network. A mathematical model was made of the Medvedova konta pothole, in which two different sets of material properties were used, corresponding to the Triassic limestone that forms the bedrock under the greater part of Pokljuka. The model simulates the gradual thinning of the ceiling of the underground hall, from the surface downwards, until its collapse. The paper presents a …

Wintertime Shoreward Near-Surface Currents South Of Cape Hatteras, Dana K. Savidge Jan 2002

Wintertime Shoreward Near-Surface Currents South Of Cape Hatteras, Dana K. Savidge

CCPO Publications

[1] Cross-isobath flow on continental shelves is of interest for a variety of reasons. Near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, the transport of larval organisms, pollutants, and oceanic carbon budget constituents to and from the adjacent Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds may depend critically on cross-isobath currents. Shoreward currents in the near-surface waters south of Cape Hatteras are documented herein, on the basis of continuous 2-year time series, encompassing all or part of three consecutive winters. Energetic shoreward currents exist similar to30% of the time from midfall through late spring. These currents are evident over the 20 and 35 m isobaths along …
