Ontogeny And Intervals Of Development In Five Reef-Associated Species Of Blenny From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico (Teleostei: Blenniidae), James G. Ditty Jan 2002

Ontogeny And Intervals Of Development In Five Reef-Associated Species Of Blenny From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico (Teleostei: Blenniidae), James G. Ditty

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

I examined patterns and timing of ontogeny and relative growth in five species of blenny (Teleostei: Blenniidae) from the northern Gulf of Mexico by assigning a suite of discrete character state scores to ontogenetic events (10 external traits; 218 total specimens). This is the first study to evaluate developmental patterns in reef-associated fishes relative to the timing of metamorphosis and settlement by applying scaling techniques and statistical methods to quantify, differentiate, and select criteria for defining intervals of development across taxa. Blennies settle at a common state of ontogeny and share a common pattern of body and fin/cirrus growth. Three …

Phosphorus Dynamics In Cultures And Natural Populations Of Trichodesmium Spp, Margaret R. Mulholland, Sheri Floge, Edward J. Carpenter, Douglas G. Capone Jan 2002

Phosphorus Dynamics In Cultures And Natural Populations Of Trichodesmium Spp, Margaret R. Mulholland, Sheri Floge, Edward J. Carpenter, Douglas G. Capone

OES Faculty Publications

Trichodesmium spp. fix atmospheric N2 and so an element other than N limits production by these species in the oligotrophic ocean. Because dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) is in short supply in many marine systems, it has been hypothesized that P is a growth-limiting nutrient for these species in nature. However, Trichodesmium is capable of hydrolyzing dissolved organic P (DOP) compounds and the inorganic products from hydrolysis may provide an additional source of P for growth. We investigated P dynamics and alkaline phosphatase activity in cultures and natural populations of Trichodesmium from the Atlantic Ocean and the north coast of …

Impact Of Sea Grass Density On Carbonate Dissolution In Bahamian Sediments, David J. Burdige, Richard C. Zimmerman Jan 2002

Impact Of Sea Grass Density On Carbonate Dissolution In Bahamian Sediments, David J. Burdige, Richard C. Zimmerman

OES Faculty Publications

Carbonate dissolution has been widely observed in shallow water tropical sediments. However, sediment budgets C have generally not been closed with respect to the amount of acid required to produce the observed carbonate dissolution. Recently it has been suggested that enhanced oxygen transport into sediments through the roots and rhizomes of sea grasses might play a role in resolving this mass balance problem. We conducted studies of sea grass-carbonate sediment interactions around Lee Stocking Island, Exuma Islands, Bahamas to further examine this problem. Our studies showed that alkalinity, total dissolved inorganic carbon (ΣCO2) and Ca2+ increased with …

First-Principles Calculations Of Piezoelectricity And Polarization Rotation In Lead Zirconate Titanate, Zhigang Wu Jan 2002

First-Principles Calculations Of Piezoelectricity And Polarization Rotation In Lead Zirconate Titanate, Zhigang Wu

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Recent experimental and theoretical work indicates that polarization rotation via a monoclinic phase at the morphotropic phase boundary in PZT is responsible for its large piezoelectric response. We performed Linearized augmented plane wave with the local orbital extension (LAPW+LO) method within local density approximation (LDA) on B-site [001]1:1 ordered Pb(Zr 0.5Ti0.5)O3 (PZT 50/50). We use a tetragonal super-cell and constrain it with monoclinic Cm space group. Atomic forces following the formulation of Yu et al. are calculated, and the conjugate gradient method is implemented to optimize the internal coordinates. Both the tetragonal (P4mm) and monoclinic (Cm) phases are reproduced, when …

Analyzing The Education Mandate Of Title X: The Lead-Based Paint Reduction Act Of 1992, William Troy Roussel

LSU Master's Theses

The Environmental Protection Agency appropriates 400 million dollars in grant funding under the authority of Title X: Residential Lead-based Paint Hazard Reduction Act of 1992. The education mandate of Title X states that the federal government must build an infrastructure to educate the public, real estate professionals, and contractors, to name a few, on the hazards of lead-based paint. A survey was developed to assess the effectiveness of the Title X education mandate. Contractors in the City of New Orleans were surveyed to assess their knowledge of the act and the hazards of lead-based paint before attending an 8-hour training …

The Fine Spectra Of The Rhaly Operators On C_{0}, Mustafa Yildirim Jan 2002

The Fine Spectra Of The Rhaly Operators On C_{0}, Mustafa Yildirim

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In 1975, Wenger [3] determined the fine spectra of Cesàro operator C_{1} on c, the space of convergent sequences. In [6], the spectrum of the Rhaly operators on c_{0} and c, under the assumption that {\displaystyle\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty}(n+1)a_{n} }=L\neq 0, has been determined. This paper presents the fine spectra of the Rhaly matrix R_{a} as an operator on the space c_{0}, with the same assumption.

On The Modular Curve X(6) And Surfaces Admitting Genus 2 Fibrations, Gülay Karadoğan Jan 2002

On The Modular Curve X(6) And Surfaces Admitting Genus 2 Fibrations, Gülay Karadoğan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we study the moduli spaces of surfaces admitting nonsmooth genus 2 fibrations with slope \lambda = 6 (necessarily) over curves of genus \geq 1. We determine the structure of each connected component of these moduli spaces. Our results fill the gap of earlier work in the literature to complete the picture of the moduli spaces of genus 2 fibrations over curves of genus \geq 2 except for the case of \lambda = 4.

Peroxynitrite-Mediated Oxidations: Nitration And Nitrosation, Rachel Bolzan Jan 2002

Peroxynitrite-Mediated Oxidations: Nitration And Nitrosation, Rachel Bolzan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Using a direct ultraviolet second-derivative spectroscopy method, three peroxynitrite preparative methods were investigated for the nitrite and nitrate present either as impurities or produced during peroxynitrite decomposition: (I) ozonation of azide, reaction of hydrogen peroxide with (II) isoamyl nitrite and (III) nitrous acid. The oxidation of morpholine by peroxynitrite in the presence and absence of added carbonate gives N-nitromorpholine and N-nitrosomorpholine. Nitration and nitrosation of morpholine are catalyzed by low levels of CO2; however, excess CO2 dramatically reduces the yields of nitrosation but not nitration, and the combined yields of the products are about the same under …

Common Cause Failure Prediction Using Data Mapping, Paul H. Kvam, J. Glenn Miller Jan 2002

Common Cause Failure Prediction Using Data Mapping, Paul H. Kvam, J. Glenn Miller

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

To estimate power plant reliability, a probabilistic safety assessment might combine failure data from various sites. Because dependent failures are a critical concern in the nuclear industry, combining failure data from component groups of different sizes is a challenging problem. One procedure, called data mapping, translates failure data across component group sizes. This includes common cause failures, which are simultaneous failure events of two or more components in a group. In this paper, we present methods for predicting future plant reliability using mapped common cause failure data. The prediction technique is motivated by discrete failure data from emergency diesel generators …

Discrete Predictive Analysis In Probabilistic Safety Assessment, Paul Kvam, J. Glenn Miller Jan 2002

Discrete Predictive Analysis In Probabilistic Safety Assessment, Paul Kvam, J. Glenn Miller

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

This paper presents methods for predicting future numbers of component failures for probabilistic safety assessments (PSAs). The research is motivated and illustrated by discrete failure data from the nuclear industry, including failure counts for emergency diesel generators, pumps, and motor operated valves. Failure counts are modeled with Poisson and binomial distributions. Multiple-failure environments create extra problems for predictive inference, and are a primary focus of this paper. Common cause failures (CCFs), in particular, refer to the simultaneous failure of system components due to an external event. CCF prediction is investigated, and approximate inference methods are derived for various CCF models.

A review is given of the experimental determination of electron affinities (EAs). Also considered is the ability of computational chemistry methods to predict electron affinities. The development and present status of computational chemistry techniques for the prediction of atomic molecular EAs is also reviewed in a historical context. Through comparisons to experimental EAs and results from other theoretical methods, analysis of DFT EAs is given. In the context of other theoretical methods, the successes and failures of DFT EA predictions are detailed.

A Method For The Perceptual Optimization Of Complex Visualizations, Donald H. House, Colin Ware Jan 2002

A Method For The Perceptual Optimization Of Complex Visualizations, Donald H. House, Colin Ware

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

A common problem in visualization applications is the display of one surface overlying another. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to do this clearly and effectively. Stereoscopic viewing can help, but in order for us to be able to see both surfaces simultaneously, they must be textured, and the top surface must be made partially transparent. There is also abundant evidence that all textures are not equal in helping to reveal surface shape, but there are no general guidelines describing the best set of textures to be used in this way. What makes the problem difficult to perceptually optimize is that …

Multibeam Volume Acoustic Backscatter Imagery And Reverberation Measurements In The Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico, Timoth C. Gallaudet, Christian De Moustier Jan 2002

Multibeam Volume Acoustic Backscatter Imagery And Reverberation Measurements In The Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico, Timoth C. Gallaudet, Christian De Moustier

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Multibeam volume acoustic backscatterimagery and reverberation measurements are derived from data collected in 200-m-deep waters in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, with the Toroidal Volume Search Sonar (TVSS), a 68-kHz cylindrical sonar operated by the U.S. Navy’s Coastal System Station. The TVSS’s 360-degree vertical imaging plane allows simultaneous identification of multiple volume scattering sources and their discrimination from backscatter at the sea surface or the seafloor. This imaging capability is used to construct a three-dimensional representation of a pelagic fish school near the bottom. Scattering layers imaged in the mixed layer and upper thermocline are attributed to assemblages of epipelagic …

Rates Of Sedimentation In The Central Arctic Ocean, Jan Backman, Martin Jakobsson, Reidar Lovlie, Leonid Polyak Jan 2002

Rates Of Sedimentation In The Central Arctic Ocean, Jan Backman, Martin Jakobsson, Reidar Lovlie, Leonid Polyak

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The Arctic Ocean is presently undergoing geoscientific investigations of the type that occurred during the late 1940's through 1960's in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. Seismic reflection and refraction data are scarce in the Arctic Ocean and large areas are virtually unsampled with respect to piston or gravity coring. The vast majority of available cores are less than10 m in length and largely lack biostratigraphically useful calcareous and siliceous microfossils. No drill cores exist from the ridges or deep basins in the central Arctic Ocean. Considering the limited geophysical and geological data available, it is not surprising that current …

Definability, Canonical Models, And Compactness For Finitary Coalgebraic Modal Logic, Alexander Kurz, Dirk Pattinson Jan 2002

Definability, Canonical Models, And Compactness For Finitary Coalgebraic Modal Logic, Alexander Kurz, Dirk Pattinson

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

This paper studies coalgebras from the perspective of the finitary observations that can be made of their behaviours. Based on the terminal sequence, notions of finitary behaviours and finitary predicates are introduced. A category Behω(T) of coalgebras with morphisms preserving finitary behaviours is defined. We then investigate definability and compactness for finitary coalgebraic modal logic, show that the final object in Behω(T) generalises the notion of a canonical model in modal logic, and study the topology induced on a coalgebra by the finitary part of the terminal sequence.

How To Keep Up With Mathematics (Abstract), Paul Campbell Jan 2002

How To Keep Up With Mathematics (Abstract), Paul Campbell

Kenneth C. Schraut Memorial Lectures

You are a mathematics major perhaps because you are good at it and it’s useful, but more likely mainly because you enjoy it.

Most undergraduate mathematics is decades or even centuries old, in part because of the hierarchical nature of the subject. Meanwhile, your fellow students in biology and other sciences use textbooks that feature crucial work of the last five or ten years.

Recall, though, what you were told in orientation to college and often since: Much learning in college has to take place outside the classroom, at your own initiative. After your formal education ends, all mathematics learning …

A Technique For Visualizing Software Architectures, Jon M. Inouye Jan 2002

A Technique For Visualizing Software Architectures, Jon M. Inouye

CCE Theses and Dissertations

Software architecture appeared in the early 1990s as a distinct discipline within software engineering. Models based on software architecture attempt to reduce the complexity of software by providing relatively coarse-grained structures for representing different aspects of software development. A software architecture typically consists of various components and connections arranged in a specific topology. Elements of the topology can serve as abstractions on (for example) modules, objects, protocols or interfaces. The meaning of the topology depends on viewpoint.

Software architectures' can be described using an architecture description language (ADL). The key goals of ADLs are to communicate alternate designs to the …

An Empirical Investigation Of Employee Perceptions Of Outsourcing Success Of Information Technology Operations, Lynda Roberson Louis Jan 2002

An Empirical Investigation Of Employee Perceptions Of Outsourcing Success Of Information Technology Operations, Lynda Roberson Louis

CCE Theses and Dissertations

Outsourcing is defined as the contracting out of all or parts of a company's functional work. While most outsourcing initiatives attempt to open a line of communication between upper management and affected employees, little effort is made to assess and incorporate employee perceptions into the outsourcing deal. Little research exists that addresses employee perceptions of outsourcing Information Technology (IT) functions and operations and the effects such outsourcing have on the employee. This study investigated the perceptions of employees directly involved in IT outsourcing deals in an effort to relate these perceptions to factors identified in earlier studies. The following human …
