Alumina And Synthesis Intermediates Derived From Diethylkaluminum Amide, Benzaldehyde And Water, Stephen E. Hall, Lize Wilcox, William S. Tyree, David A. Lindquist, Malay K. Mazumder Jan 2002

Alumina And Synthesis Intermediates Derived From Diethylkaluminum Amide, Benzaldehyde And Water, Stephen E. Hall, Lize Wilcox, William S. Tyree, David A. Lindquist, Malay K. Mazumder

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The reaction of diethylaluminum amide [Et2AINH2] with benzaldehyde in toluene produces a solution of ethylaluminoxane polymer [EtAlO] and hydrobenzamide [PhCH=NCH(Ph)N=CHPh]. Alumina then is precipitated by the addition of water. Transition aluminas that may be useful in heterogeneous catalyst applications are obtained after calcining. Details of the chemistry of solution intermediates according to 1H NMR and the properties of the alumina product according to surface area analyses and powder x-ray diffraction are described.

Bedrock Geology Of West Fork Quadrangle, Washington County, Arkansas, Jack T. King, Maria E. King, Stephen K. Boss

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A digital geologic map of West Fork quadrangle was produced at 1:24,000 scale using the geographic information system (GIS) software Maplnfo. Data regarding stratigraphic relations observed in the field were digitized onto the United States Geological Survey (USGS) digital raster graphic (DRG) of West Fork quadrangle. The geology of West Fork quadrangle consists of sedimentary rocks of the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian systems. The Fayetteville Shale and Pitkin Formation represent the Mississippian system. The Hale, Bloyd, and Atoka Formations represent the Pennsylvanian System. Each of these formations consists of members that were mapped at 1:24,000 scale, and this mapping effort represents …

Distribution And Origin Of Clay Minerals In Konya Neogene Sedimentary Basin, Central Anatolia, Turkey, Selahatti̇n Kadi̇r, Zehra Karakaş Jan 2002

Distribution And Origin Of Clay Minerals In Konya Neogene Sedimentary Basin, Central Anatolia, Turkey, Selahatti̇n Kadi̇r, Zehra Karakaş

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Neogene sediments having both fluvial and lacustrine characteristics are widespread in the Konya region of central Anatolia. The fluvial units are typically green in colour and thick at the margin of the basin and thinning laterally basinwards. The lacustrine sediments are represented by white, beige and cream, pure, dolomitic, sandy and clayey limestone alternating with claystone. Grain size, components and matrix of the fluvial and lacustrine sediments decrease from the margin of the basin toward its center. Smectite and chlorite in detrital fluvial sediments are associated with amphibole, illite and quartz, while sepiolite and palygorskite formed diagenetically in the carbonate …

Kinetic Spectrophotometric Determination Of Nanogram Levels Of Manganese (Ii) By Azo Dye -- Potassium Periodate -- 1,10-Phenanthroline System, Konstantin L. Mutaftchiev

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The catalytic effect of manganese (II) on the oxidation of 3 - Methyl - 6 - (2 - hydroxyethoxy) - 2 - [2 - methoxy - 4 - N (N,N - diethylamino) phenylazo] benzothiazolium methylsulphate (MHMDPBM), with potassium periodate in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline in weakly acidic media was studied. The reaction was followed spectrophotometrically by measuring the decrease in the absorbance of the dye at 560 nm. Under the optimum conditions (4x10^{- 5} mol dm^{- 3} MHMDPBM, 4x10^{- 4} mol dm^{- 3} potassium periodate, 1x10^{- 4} mol dm^{- 3} 1,10-phenanthroline, 0.1 mol dm^{- 3} buffer -- pH 3.0, 70^oC, …

Asymptotic Analysis Of Singularly Perturbed Abstract Evolution Equations In Banach And Hilbert Spaces, Dialla Konate Jan 2002

Asymptotic Analysis Of Singularly Perturbed Abstract Evolution Equations In Banach And Hilbert Spaces, Dialla Konate

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In the current paper, we are concerned with the study of abstract linear evolution equations in Banach spaces in which the time derivative term is multiplied by a small parameter, say \epsilon. Such equations arise in the study of radiative transfer and neutron transport in Nuclear Physics. Following works by Krein (cf [9]) and others, Mika (cf [12,13,14,15]) using either the Hilbert method or the Compressed method has shown that the solution of the given singularly perturbed equation may be approximated upto any prescibed order by a sum of two asymptotic expansions that are the outer expansion that is valid …

Stable Isotopes Of Carbon As An Invaluable Stratigraphic Tool: An Example From The Cambrian Of The Northern Appalachians, Usa, Bosiljka Glumac, Malkah L. Spivak-Birndorf Jan 2002

Stable Isotopes Of Carbon As An Invaluable Stratigraphic Tool: An Example From The Cambrian Of The Northern Appalachians, Usa, Bosiljka Glumac, Malkah L. Spivak-Birndorf

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

This study illustrates the usefulness of carbon isotopes in stratigraphic interpretations of poorly fossiliferous strata beyond the resolution possible by biostratigraphy. The Upper Cambrian strata of the lower Gorge Formation in northwestern Vermont have been interpreted as highly condensed continental-slope deposits with a hiatus bracketed by the trilobite fauna of the Dunderbergia zone (Steptoean) and the Saukia zone (upper Sunwaptan). This interpretation was based on information from two thin fossiliferous intervals, the occurrence of one of them being unconfirmed in a recent study. Carbon isotopes provide a means for testing this interpretation because marine carbonate rocks deposited during the Steptoean …

Investigations Of Intramolecular Copper (I)-Arene Interactions Using A Ns2-Macrocyclic Ligand With Different Pendant Aryl Arms, Paul J. Lee Jan 2002

Investigations Of Intramolecular Copper (I)-Arene Interactions Using A Ns2-Macrocyclic Ligand With Different Pendant Aryl Arms, Paul J. Lee

Honors Theses

Two macrocyclic ligands with a pendant phenyl group -N-[2-(l-phenyl)ethyl]-1-aza-4,8di thiacyclodecane (L1) and N-[2-0-phenyl)propyl]-1-aza-4,8-dithiacyclodecane, (L2) has been synthesized and characterized. The copper(I)-triphenylphosphine complex [LICu(PPhJ)]OTf , (2) was synthesized from L1 1/2(C6H6)[CuOTf]2, and PPh3. The complexes [LICu]OTf 1 and [L2Cu]OTf 3 were also synthesized and characterized using DC and IH NMR, UV-vis and lR spectroscopy, and ESI-MS. In CD2Cl2, 1 was found to have a fluxional behavior with the barrier ΔG to the process estimated at 9-11 kcal/mol. Variable temp. NMR spectroscopy of 1 gave compelling evidence that the phenylappended group is bound in an intramolecullar η2-fashion with the copper center. At …

The Transformation Of Iodate To Iodide In Marine Phytoplankton Cultures, George T. F. Wong, Ajcharaporn U. Piumsomboon, William M. Dunstan Jan 2002

The Transformation Of Iodate To Iodide In Marine Phytoplankton Cultures, George T. F. Wong, Ajcharaporn U. Piumsomboon, William M. Dunstan

OES Faculty Publications

Six species of phytoplankton, representing 6 major phylogenetic groups (2 oceanic species: a cyanobacteria, Synechococcus sp., and a coccolithophorid, Emiliania huxleyi; and 4 coastal species: a prasinophyte, Tetraselmis sp., the green algae Dunaliella tertiolecta, the diatom Skeletonema costatum and a dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae) were tested for their ability to reduce iodate to iodide in batch cultures. They all did so to varying degrees. Thus, the reduction of iodate to iodide by phytoplankton may be a general phenomenon in the marine environment. At ambient concentrations of iodate, the rates of depletion of iodate and appearance of …

Arctic Ice Export Events And Their Potential Impact On Global Climate During The Late Pleistocene, Dennis A. Darby, Jens F. Bischof, Robert F. Spielhagen, Steven A. Marshall, Stephen W. Herman Jan 2002

Arctic Ice Export Events And Their Potential Impact On Global Climate During The Late Pleistocene, Dennis A. Darby, Jens F. Bischof, Robert F. Spielhagen, Steven A. Marshall, Stephen W. Herman

OES Faculty Publications

Ice sheets in the North American Arctic and, to a lesser extent, those in northern Eurasia calved large quantities of icebergs that drifted through Fram Strait into the Greenland Sea several times during the late Pleistocene. These icebergs deposited Fe oxide grains (45-250 mum) and coarse lithic clasts >250 mum matched to specific circum-Arctic sources. Four massive Arctic iceberg export events are identified from the Laurentide and the Innuitian ice sheets, between 14 and 34 ka (calendar years) in a sediment core from Fram Strait. These relatively short duration (<1-4 kyr) events contain 3-5 times the background levels of Fe oxide grains. They began suddenly, as indicated by a steep rise in the number of grains matched to an ice sheet source, suggesting rapid purges of ice through Fram Strait, due perhaps to collapse of ice sheets. The larger events from the northwestern Laurentide ice sheet are preceded by events from the Innuitian ice sheet. Despite the chronological uncertainties, the Arctic export events appear to occur prior to Heinrich events.

Outcrop To Subsurface Stratigraphy Of The Pennsylvanian Hermosa Group Southern Paradox Basin U.S.A., Alan Lee Brown Jan 2002

Outcrop To Subsurface Stratigraphy Of The Pennsylvanian Hermosa Group Southern Paradox Basin U.S.A., Alan Lee Brown

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) sedimentary rocks within the Paradox Basin Four Corners area of the western United States afford a unique opportunity to study the development of sedimentary successions in a complex marine to nonmarine depositional setting. The close association of thick intervals of nonmarine fan-delta facies adjacent to and in time equivalent position to marine carbonate-evaporite facies suggests complex relationships between the factors affecting deposition. Development of an effective scheme to differentiate the depositional signatures from within these sedimentary successions is the primary goal of this study. To achieve this goal, two objectives were pursued. The first was to calibrate the …
