Degeneracy In Density Functional Theory: Topology In The V And N Spaces, Carsten A. Ullrich, W. Kohn Oct 2002

Degeneracy In Density Functional Theory: Topology In The V And N Spaces, Carsten A. Ullrich, W. Kohn

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The problem of v-representability had cast a shadow of uncertainty over density functional theory (DFT). Building on CCR, the topology of the v(r)-n(r) mapping is clarified. The Be series and a lattice model are used for rl, to a continuous variable, r, does not appear to offer difficulties.

Early Deglaciation In The Tropical Andes, G. O. Seltzer, D. T. Rodbell, P. A. Baker, Sherilyn C. Fritz, P. M. Tapia, H. D. Rowe, R. B. Dunbar, Peter U. Clark Oct 2002

Early Deglaciation In The Tropical Andes, G. O. Seltzer, D. T. Rodbell, P. A. Baker, Sherilyn C. Fritz, P. M. Tapia, H. D. Rowe, R. B. Dunbar, Peter U. Clark

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Analysis of sediment records from lakes located beyond the glacial limit in the Andes has provided, for the first time, an independent assessment of effective moisture ( precipitation minus evaporation) and the timing of the last glaciation (1). Conditions were wet at the LGM and remained so until approximately 15,000 cal yr B.P. (2). However, deglaciation was under way from the LGM between 22,000 and 19,500 cal yr B.P., which reinforces the observation that deglaciation in the tropical Andes was primarily forced by an increase in mean annual temperature during a wet postglacial interval (3, 4).

Manganese(II) activation of the methionyl aminopeptidases from Escherichia coli (EcMetAP-I) and the hyperthermophilic archaeon Pyrococcus furiosus (PfMetAP-II) was investigated. Maximum catalytic activity for both enzymes was obtained with 1 equiv of Mn(II), and the dissociation constants (Kd) for the first metal binding site were found to be 6 ± 0.5 and 1 ± 0.5 μM for EcMetAP-I and PfMetAP-II, respectively. These Kd values were verified by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and found to be 3.0 ± 0.2 and 1.4 ± 0.2 μM for EcMetAP-I and PfMetAP-II, respectively. The …

Assessment Of Cabergoline As A Reproductive Inhibitor In Coyotes (Canis Latrans), T. J. Deliberto, A. Seglund, W. Jochle, B. Kimball Oct 2002

Assessment Of Cabergoline As A Reproductive Inhibitor In Coyotes (Canis Latrans), T. J. Deliberto, A. Seglund, W. Jochle, B. Kimball

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The efficacy of three oral formulations (gelatin capsule, tablet, oil base) and five dosages (50, 100, 250, 500, 1000 μg) of cabergoline to disrupt reproduction in coyotes (Canis latrans) was evaluated. The type of formulation used had no effect on plasma progesterone and prolactin concentrations or on mean litter size. No adverse side effects (for example, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea) were observed despite the use of doses of up to 20 times the therapeutic dose used for domestic dogs and cats. All coyotes treated with 50, 100, 250 and 500 μg cabergoline whelped, but plasma progesterone concentrations in these coyotes were …

Wildlife Fertility Control, K.A. Fagerstone Oct 2002

Wildlife Fertility Control, K.A. Fagerstone

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Huge flights of Canada geese turn off local park visitors with their messy, smelly "business cards." The superabundant white-tailed deer we love to watch also can do a number on your car at night and host the ticks that carry Lyme Disease. Blackbirds and gulls and coyotes and other critters bring their own problems when their numbers get out of hand.

Most such problems reach their highest profile in urban/suburban areas where traditional animal-control techniques such as hunting and trapping are frowned upon or illegal. More and more people are calling for wildlife managers to use "fertility control"–-but is that …

Spintessence! New Models For Dark Matter And Dark Energy, Latham A. Boyle, Robert R. Caldwell, Marc Kamionkowski Oct 2002

Spintessence! New Models For Dark Matter And Dark Energy, Latham A. Boyle, Robert R. Caldwell, Marc Kamionkowski

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigate a class of models for dark matter and/or negative-pressure, dynamical dark energy consisting of “spintessence”, a complex scalar field φ spinning in a U(1)-symmetric potential V(φ)=V(|φ|). As the Universe expands, the field spirals slowly toward the origin. The internal angular momentum plays an important role in the cosmic evolution and fluctuation dynamics. We outline the constraints on a cosmic spintessence field, describing the properties of the potential necessary to sustain a viable dark energy model, making connections with quintessence and self-interacting and fuzzy cold dark matter. Possible implications for the …

Numeric Issues In Test Software Correctness, Robert G. Hayes, Gary B. Hughes, Phillip M. Dorin, Raymond J. Toal Oct 2002

Numeric Issues In Test Software Correctness, Robert G. Hayes, Gary B. Hughes, Phillip M. Dorin, Raymond J. Toal

Statistics

Test system designers are comfortable with the concepts of precision and accuracy with regard to measurements achieved with modern instrumentation. In a well-designed test system, great care is taken to ensure accurate measurements, with rigorous attention to instrument specifications and calibration. However, measurement values are subjected to representation and manipulation as limited precision floating-point numbers by test software. This paper investigates some of the issues related to floating point representation of measurement values, as well as the consequences of algorithm selection. To illustrate, we consider the test case of standard deviation calculations as used in the testing of infrared focal …

Kinematic Path-Planning For Formations Of Mobile Robots With A Nonholonomic Constraint, Timothy D. Barfoot, Christopher M. Clark, Stephen M. Rock, Gabriele M.T. D'Eleuterio Oct 2002

Kinematic Path-Planning For Formations Of Mobile Robots With A Nonholonomic Constraint, Timothy D. Barfoot, Christopher M. Clark, Stephen M. Rock, Gabriele M.T. D'Eleuterio

Computer Science and Software Engineering

A method of planning paths for formations of mobile robots with nonholonomic constraints is presented. The kinematics equations presented in this paper allow a general geometrical formation of mobile robots to be maintained while the group as a whole travels an arbitrary path. It is possible to represent a formation of mobile robots by a single entity with the same type of nonholonomic constraint as the individual members. Thus, any path-planner or control method may be used with the formation as would be applied to an individual robot. Equations are developed for changing the geometrical formation and hardware results are …

Phase Dependence Of Thomson Scattering In An Ultraintense Laser Field, Fei He, Y. Y. Lau, Donald P. Umstadter, Trevor Strickler Oct 2002

Phase Dependence Of Thomson Scattering In An Ultraintense Laser Field, Fei He, Y. Y. Lau, Donald P. Umstadter, Trevor Strickler

Donald Umstadter Publications

The Thomson scattering spectra of an electron by an ultraintense laser field are computed. It is found that the electron orbit, and therefore its nonlinear Thomson scattering spectra, depend critically on the amplitude of the ultraintense laser field and on the phase at which the electron sees the laser electric field. Contrary to some customary notions, the Thomson scattering spectra, in general, do not occur at integer multiples of the laser frequency and the maximum frequency is proportional to the first instead of the third power of the electric field strength for the case of an ultraintense laser. The implications …

The Fine Structure Of The Kasparov Groups Ii: Topologizing The Uct, Claude Schochet Oct 2002

The Fine Structure Of The Kasparov Groups Ii: Topologizing The Uct, Claude Schochet

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

The Kasparov Groups KK∗(A,B) have a natural structure as pseudopolonais groups. In this paper we analyze how this topology interacts with the terms of the Universal Coefficient Theorem (UCT) and the splitting sof the UCT constructed by J. Rosenberg and the author, as well as its canonical three term decomposition which exists under bootstrap hypotheses. We show that the various topologies on [cursive]Ext^{1}_{ℤ}(K∗(A),K∗(B)) and other related groups mostly coincide. Then we focus attention on the Milnor sequence and the fine structure subgroup of KK∗(A,B). …

Stochastic 2-D Navier-Stokes Equation, J. L. Menaldi, S. S. Sritharan Oct 2002

Stochastic 2-D Navier-Stokes Equation, J. L. Menaldi, S. S. Sritharan

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

In this paper we prove the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for the stochastic Navier-Stokes equation in bounded and unbounded domains. These solutions are stochastic analogs of the classical Lions-Prodi solutions to the deterministic Navier-Stokes equation. Local monotonicity of the nonlinearity is exploited to obtain the solutions in a given probability space and this signi cantly improves the earlier techniques for obtaining strong solutions, which depended on pathwise solutions to the Navier-Stokes martingale problem where the probability space is also obtained as a part of the solution.

Fast Fifth-Order Polynomial Transforms For Generating Univariate And Multivariate Nonnormal Distributions, Todd C. Headrick Oct 2002

Fast Fifth-Order Polynomial Transforms For Generating Univariate And Multivariate Nonnormal Distributions, Todd C. Headrick

Todd Christopher Headrick

A general procedure is derived for simulating univariate and multivariate nonnormal distributions using polynomial transformations of order five. The procedure allows for the additional control of the fifth and sixth moments. The ability to control higher moments increases the precision in the approximations of nonnormal distributions and lowers the skew and kurtosis boundary relative to the competing procedures considered. Tabled values of constants are provided for approximating various probability density functions. A numerical example is worked to demonstrate the multivariate procedure. The results of a Monte Carlo simulation are provided to demonstrate that the procedure generates specified population parameters and …

A Discrete Nonlinear Model With Substrate Feedback, Panos Kevrekidis, B. A. Malomed, A. R. Bishop Oct 2002

A Discrete Nonlinear Model With Substrate Feedback, Panos Kevrekidis, B. A. Malomed, A. R. Bishop

Panos Kevrekidis

We consider a prototypical model in which a nonlinear field (continuum or discrete) evolves on a flexible substrate which feeds back to the evolution of the main field. We identify the underlying physics and potential applications of such a model and examine its simplest one-dimensional Hamiltonian form, which turns out to be a modified Frenkel-Kontorova model coupled to an extra linear equation. We find static kink solutions and study their stability, and then examine moving kinks (the continuum limit of the model is studied too). We observe how the substrate effectively renormalizes properties of the kinks. In particular, a nontrivial …

Hierarchical Geostatistics And Multifacies Systems: Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site, Boise, Idaho, Warren Barrash, Tom Clemo

CGISS Publications and Presentations

The geostatistical structure of a heterogeneous coarse fluvial aquifer is investigated with porosity data derived from neutron logs at a research well field (Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site, or BHRS) that was designed, in part, to support three-dimensional geostatistical analysis of hydrologic and geophysical parameters. Recognizing that the coarse fluvial deposits include subdivisions (units between bounding surfaces), we adopt a hierarchical approach and examine the porosity geostatistics of the aquifer at three scales. At the BHRS, the saturated fluvial deposits as a whole (maximum interwell spacing ~80 m, thickness ~16–18 m) are at hierarchical level 1; five subhorizontal units within these …
