Bidding For Envy-Freeness: A Procedural Approach To N-Player Fair-Division Problems, Claus-Jochen Haake, Matthias G. Raith, Francis E. Su Oct 2002

Bidding For Envy-Freeness: A Procedural Approach To N-Player Fair-Division Problems, Claus-Jochen Haake, Matthias G. Raith, Francis E. Su

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We develop a procedure for implementing an efficient and envy-free allocation of m objects among n individuals with the possibility of monetary side-payments, assuming that players have quasi–linear utility functions. The procedure eliminates envy by compensating envious players. It is fully descriptive and says explicitly which compensations should be made, and in what order. Moreover, it is simple enough to be carried out without computer support. We formally characterize the properties of the procedure, show how it establishes envy-freeness with minimal resources, and demonstrate its application to a wide class of fair-division problems.

We prove the following conjecture of Atanassov (Studia Sci. Math. Hungar.32 (1996), 71–74). Let T be a triangulation of a d-dimensional polytope P with n vertices v1, v2,…,vn. Label the vertices of T by 1,2,…,n in such a way that a vertex of T belonging to the interior of a face F of P can only be labelled by j if vj is on F. Then there are at least nd full dimensional simplices of T, each labelled with d+1 different labels. We …

Thermoelectric Effect Spectroscopy Of Deep Levels In Semi-Insulating Gan, U. V. Desnica, M. Pavlovic, Z-Q. Fang, David C. Look

Physics Faculty Publications

The report of thermoelectric effect spectroscopy (TEES) applied on semi-insulating GaN was presented. The type of TEES setup, especially suitable for film-on-substrate samples, was devised. TEES enabled determination of sign of observed deep traps. Using TEES and thermally stimulated current spectroscopy measurements in combination with the simultaneous multiple peak analysis formalism all important trap parameters were determined. The shallowest identified electron and hole traps had activation energies Ec−0.09 eV and Ev+0.167 eV, respectively. Results indicate that both these traps, oppositely charged are present in the studied material in relatively high concentrations causing the electrical compensation and …

Adaptive Management: What Does It Mean And How Can It Be Used In Fire Management?, R. J. Whelan Oct 2002

Adaptive Management: What Does It Mean And How Can It Be Used In Fire Management?, R. J. Whelan

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

‘Adaptive Management’ is becoming a frequently heard term but it is a much misunderstood concept. It does not mean that developments can go ahead and be ‘adapted’ if detrimental effects are discovered! Its greatest value is in defining an experimental approach to land management in situations where scientific knowledge is lacking but where immediate actions are required. This is especially important where doing nothing might conceivably be just as undesirable as applying any of the alternative management options. Given the lack of knowledge of fire responses of much of our native biota, adaptive management is clearly a sensible approach to …

H2o–D2o Condensation In A Supersonic Nozzle, Christopher H. Heath, Kiril A. Streletzky, Barbara E. Wyslouzil, Judith Woelk, Reinhard Strey Oct 2002

H2o–D2o Condensation In A Supersonic Nozzle, Christopher H. Heath, Kiril A. Streletzky, Barbara E. Wyslouzil, Judith Woelk, Reinhard Strey

Physics Faculty Publications

We examined the condensation of H2O, D2O, and four intermediate mixtures (20, 40, 60, and 80 mol % D2O) in a supersonic nozzle. Because the physical and chemical properties of protonated and deuterated water are so similar, this system is ideal for studying the change in condensation behavior as a function of condensible composition. In our experiments dilute mixtures of condensible vapor in N2 are expanded from three different stagnation temperatures resulting in a broad range of onset temperatures (190–238 K) and pressures (27–787 kPa). For a fixed stagnation temperature, the partial pressure required to maintain the onset of condensation …

Dephasing Model For Spatially Extended Atomic States In Cyclotronlike Resonances, R E. Wagner, S Radovich, J Gillespie, Q Su, Rainer Grobe Oct 2002

Dephasing Model For Spatially Extended Atomic States In Cyclotronlike Resonances, R E. Wagner, S Radovich, J Gillespie, Q Su, Rainer Grobe

Faculty publications – Physics

In recent work, the formation of ring-shaped electron distributions for hydrogen atoms in resonant static magnetic-laser fields has exclusively been associated with the impact of relativity. In this note we will generalize this statement and show that the nonlinearity associated with the nuclear binding force can trigger similarly shaped steady-state charge clouds in atoms under suitable conditions. The dephasing model, based on modeling the quantum-mechanical state by a classical ensemble of quasiparticles evolving with slightly different cyclotron periods, can recover features, in the two lowest-order resonances as well as the Coulomb-field-induced charge distributions.

New Challenges For Wind Shock Models: The Chandra Spectrum Of The Hot Star Delta Orionis, N. A. Miller, J. P. Cassinelli, W. L. Waldron, J. J. Macfarlane, David H. Cohen Oct 2002

New Challenges For Wind Shock Models: The Chandra Spectrum Of The Hot Star Delta Orionis, N. A. Miller, J. P. Cassinelli, W. L. Waldron, J. J. Macfarlane, David H. Cohen

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

The Chandra spectrum of delta Ori A shows emission lines from hydrogen- and helium-like states of Si, Mg, Ne, and O, along with N VII Lyalpha and lines from ions in the range Fe XVII-Fe XXI In contrast to the broad lines seen in zeta Pup and zeta Ori (850 +/- 40 and 1000 +/- 240 km s(-1) half-width at half-maximum [HWHM], respectively), these lines are broadened to only 430 +/- 60 km s(-1) HWHM. This is much lower than the measured wind terminal velocity of 2000 km s(-1). The forbidden, intercombination, and resonance (fir) lines from He-like ions indicate …

A Comparison Of The Low Mode And Monte Carlo Conformational Search Methods, Carol A. Parish, Rosina Lombardi, Kent Sinclair, Emelyn Smith, Alla Goldberg, Melissa Rappleye, Myrianne Dure

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The Low Mode (LM) and Monte Carlo (MC) conformational search methods were compared on three diverse molecular systems; (4R, 5S, 6S, 7R)-hexahydro-5,6-dihydroxy-1,3,4,7-tetrakis(phenylmethyl)-2H-1,3-diazapin-2-one (1), 2-methoxy-2-phenyl-2-triflouromethyl-N-α-methyl benzyl propanamide (2) and a trimeric 39-membered polyazamacrolide (3). We find that either method, or a combination of the methods, is equally efficient at searching the conformational space of the smaller molecular systems while a 50:50 hybrid of Low Mode and Monte Carlo is most efficient at searching the space of the larger molecular system.

Performance Evaluation Of Path Searching Heuristics For Multicast Qos Routing, Daniel Zappala, Dayi Zhou Oct 2002

Performance Evaluation Of Path Searching Heuristics For Multicast Qos Routing, Daniel Zappala, Dayi Zhou

Faculty Publications

Quality of Service routing for multicast enables a group member to find and install a branch of the multicast tree that can meet its QoS constraints. The most promising protocols in this area use receiver-oriented path searching heuristics to find feasible routes. In this paper, we examine the performance of the path searching heuristics used by these protocols, to determine which techniques are the most effective. We find that several low-overhead path searching heuristics are effective, and that generic path searching can work as well as targeted, QoS-specific searching.

A Novel Approach For The Analysis Of High Frequency Vibrations, G. W. Wei, Yibao Zhao, Y. Xiang Oct 2002

A Novel Approach For The Analysis Of High Frequency Vibrations, G. W. Wei, Yibao Zhao, Y. Xiang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Despite much effort in the past few decades, the numerical prediction of high-frequency vibrations remains a challenging task to the engineering and scientific communities due to the numerical instability of existing computational methods. However, such prediction is of crucial importance to certain problems of pressing practical concern, as pointed out by Langley and Bardell (1998 The Aeronautical Journal102, 287-297). This paper introduces the discrete singular convolution (DSC) algorithm for the prediction and analysis of high-frequency vibration of structures. Both a beam and two-span plates are employed as test examples to demonstrate the capability of the DSC algorithm for high-frequency vibration …

Compact Focusing Von Hamos Spectrometer For Quantitative X-Ray Spectroscopy, Larry V. Knight, A. P. Shevelko, Yu S. Kasyanov, O. F. Yakushev Oct 2002

Compact Focusing Von Hamos Spectrometer For Quantitative X-Ray Spectroscopy, Larry V. Knight, A. P. Shevelko, Yu S. Kasyanov, O. F. Yakushev

Faculty Publications

A compact focusing crystal spectrometer based on the von Hamos scheme is described. Cylindrically curved mica and graphite crystals with a radius of curvature of R = 20 mm are used in the spectrometer. A front illuminated charge-coupled device (CCD) linear array detector makes this spectrometer useful for real-time spectroscopy of laser-produced plasma x-ray sources within the wavelength range of lambda= 1.8-10 Angstroms. Calibration of crystals and the CCD linear array makes it possible to measure absolute photon fluxes. X-ray spectra in an absolute intensity scale were obtained from Mg, Ti, and Fe laser-produced plasmas, with a spectral resolution lambda/delta …

Seismic Cycle And Rheological Effects On Estimation Of Present-Day Slip Rates For The Agua Blanca And San Miguel-Vallecitos Faults, Northern Baja California, Mexico, Timothy H. Dixon, J. Decaix, F. Farina, K. Furlong, Rocco Malservisi Oct 2002

Seismic Cycle And Rheological Effects On Estimation Of Present-Day Slip Rates For The Agua Blanca And San Miguel-Vallecitos Faults, Northern Baja California, Mexico, Timothy H. Dixon, J. Decaix, F. Farina, K. Furlong, Rocco Malservisi

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Geodesy can be used to infer long‐term fault slip rates, assuming a model for crust and upper mantle rheology. We examine the sensitivity of fault slip rate estimates to assumed rheology for the Agua Blanca and San Miguel‐Vallecitos faults in northern Baja California, Mexico, part of the Pacific–North America plate boundary zone. The Agua Blanca fault is seismically quiet, but offset alluvial fans indicate young activity. Current seismicity is confined to the nearby San Miguel‐Vallecitos fault, a small offset fault better aligned with plate motion. GPS measurements between 1993 and 1998 suggest that both faults are active, with a combined …

Pasture Condition Guides For The Pilbara, A L. Payne, A A. Mitchell Oct 2002

Pasture Condition Guides For The Pilbara, A L. Payne, A A. Mitchell

Agriculture reports

These pasture condition guides are relevant to about 192 000 square kilometres of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The rangeland of the Pilbara can be separated into 12 very broad pasture types. The ‘pasture type’ is not strictly a botanical classification because, in determining such a class of pastoral lands, the perennial plant species that contribute to stock production have an over-riding importance. Even so, each pasture type represents a broad group of similar vegetation associations or ‘site types’ which will have similar management requirements for pastoralism. The aim of this publication is to provide pastoralists with descriptions and …

Diets Of Baird’S Beaked Whales, Berardius Bairdii, In The Southern Sea Of Okhotsk And Off The Pacific Coast Of Honshu, Japan, William A. Walker, James G. Mead, Robert L. Brownell Jr. Oct 2002

Diets Of Baird’S Beaked Whales, Berardius Bairdii, In The Southern Sea Of Okhotsk And Off The Pacific Coast Of Honshu, Japan, William A. Walker, James G. Mead, Robert L. Brownell Jr.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Stomach contents were analyzed from 127 Baird’s beaked whales, Berardizls bairdii, taken in coastal waters of Japan. During late July-August of 1985- 1987, 1989, and 1991, 107 samples were collected from off the Pacific coast of Honshu. An additional 20 samples were collected from whales taken in the southern Sea of Okhotsk during late August-September of 1988 and 1989. Prey identification using fish otoliths and cephalopod beaks revealed the whales fed primarily on deep-water gadiform fishes and cephalopods in both regions. Prey species diversity and the percentage of cephalopods and fish differed between the two regions. Off the Pacific …

Sensor-Assisted Video Mapping Of The Seafloor, Yuri Rzhanov, Lloyd C. Huff, Randy G. Cutter Jr., Larry A. Mayer Oct 2002

Sensor-Assisted Video Mapping Of The Seafloor, Yuri Rzhanov, Lloyd C. Huff, Randy G. Cutter Jr., Larry A. Mayer

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

In recent years video surveys have become an increasingly important ground-truthing of acousticseafloor characterization and benthic habitat mapping studies. However, the ground-truthing and detailed characterization provided by video are still typically done using sparse sample imagery supplemented by physical samples. Combining single video frames in a seamless mosaic can provide a tool by which imagery has significant areal coverage, while at the same time showing small fauna and biological features at mm resolution. The generation of such a mosaic is a challenging task due to height variations of the imaged terrain and decimeter scale knowledge of camera position. This paper …

Identifying Sources Of Fecal Pollution In The Roanoke River, Roanoke County, Virginia, J. Brooks Crozier, Brian Clark, Holly Weber

Virginia Journal of Science

Antibiotic Resistance Patterns (ARPs) of Enterococcus spp. were used as a phenotypic fingerprint to compare and categorize unknown-source isolates in an impaired segment of the Roanoke River, Roanoke County, Virginia. Antibiotic resistance analysis (ARA) of enterococci has been effectively used to differentiate among sources of fecal contamination in many geographic regions in the United States. Enterococcus spp. were used as a fecal indicator in a library consisting of 1,562 known-source isolates. Two-way analysis indicated that approximately 95% of the unknown-source isolates collected were of animal origin. A 3-way analysis indicated that 61% of the unknowns were of livestock origin while …

Doming Modes And Dynamics Of Model Heme Compounds, Dennis D. Klug, Marek Z. Zgierski, John S. Tse, Zhenxian Liu, James R. Kincaid, Kazimierz Czarnecki, Russell J. Hemley Oct 2002

Doming Modes And Dynamics Of Model Heme Compounds, Dennis D. Klug, Marek Z. Zgierski, John S. Tse, Zhenxian Liu, James R. Kincaid, Kazimierz Czarnecki, Russell J. Hemley

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Synchrotron far-IR spectroscopy and density-functional calculations are used to characterize the low-frequency dynamics of model heme FeCO compounds. The “doming” vibrational mode in which the iron atom moves out of the porphyrin plane while the periphery of this ring moves in the opposite direction determines the reactivity of oxygen with this type of molecule in biological systems. Calculations of frequencies and absorption intensities and the measured pressure dependence of vibrational modes in the model compounds are used to identify the doming and related normal modes.
