A System Dynamics Investigation Of Genetic Drift And Translocation In The Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Metapopulation, Jason E. Yates Mar 2003

A System Dynamics Investigation Of Genetic Drift And Translocation In The Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Metapopulation, Jason E. Yates

Theses and Dissertations

The red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis) is classified under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 as an endangered species As such, the red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW) is afforded strict protection in an effort to return the RCW population to a self-sustainable level. Endemic to southeastern United States mature pine forests, the presence of the RCW impacts the operations of many Department of Defense (DoD) installations. A particular challenge in sustaining what are often small populations of RCW at these locations is the loss of genetic variation due to genetic drift. The optimal method for mitigating such loss is through the artificial immigration, …

Evaluation Of The Mountain Wave Forecast Model's Stratospheric Turbulence Simulations, Mark S. Allen Mar 2003

Evaluation Of The Mountain Wave Forecast Model's Stratospheric Turbulence Simulations, Mark S. Allen

Theses and Dissertations

Stratospheric turbulence (Stratoturb) is a well-known hazard to aircraft in flight. Forecasting mountain waves, specifically the breaking of these waves, is necessary to accurately predict the presence of Stratoturb. The Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA) requested a product with the capability of forecasting Stratoturb at 30, 50, and 70 mb using model data currently available, To facilitate their request, the Mountain Wave Forecast Model (MWFM) was acquired from the Naval Research Laboratory. MWFM turbulence forecasts generated twice daily over East Asia, using the AVN and MM5 models for initialization, were compared to S' layer turbulence analyses from the Rawinsonde Observation …

Evaluating The Performance Of Multiple Classifier Systems: A Matrix Algebra Representation Of Boolean Fusion Rules, Justin M. Hill Mar 2003

Evaluating The Performance Of Multiple Classifier Systems: A Matrix Algebra Representation Of Boolean Fusion Rules, Justin M. Hill

Theses and Dissertations

Given a finite collection of classifiers one might wish to combine, or fuse, the classifiers in hopes that the multiple classifier system (MCS) will perform better than the individuals. One method of fusing classifiers is to combine their final decision using Boolean rules (e.g., a logical OR, AND, or a majority vote of the classifiers in the system). An established method for evaluating a classifier is measuring some aspect of its Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve, which graphs the trade-off between the conditional probabilities of detection and false alarm. This work presents a unique method of estimating the performance of …

Stegfs: A Steganographic File System, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kian-Lee Tan, Xuan Zhou Mar 2003

Stegfs: A Steganographic File System, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kian-Lee Tan, Xuan Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While user access control and encryption can protect valuable data from passive observers, those techniques leave visible ciphertexts that are likely to alert an active adversary to the existence of the data, who can then compel an authorized user to disclose it. This paper introduces StegFS, a steganographic file system that aims to overcome that weakness by offering plausible deniability to owners of protected files. StegFS securely hides user-selected files in a file system so that, without the corresponding access keys, an attacker would not be able to deduce their existence, even if the attacker is thoroughly familiar with the …

Enabling Predictable Assembly, Scott A. Hissam, Gabriel A. Moreno, Judith Stafford, Kurt C. Wallnau Feb 2003

Enabling Predictable Assembly, Scott A. Hissam, Gabriel A. Moreno, Judith Stafford, Kurt C. Wallnau

Gabriel A. Moreno

Demands for increased functionality, better quality, and faster time-to-market in software products continue to increase. Component-based development is the software industry’s response to these demands. The industry has developed technologies such as EJB and CORBA to assemble components that are created in isolation. Component technologies available today allow designers to plug components together, but do little to allow the developer to reason about how well they will play together. Predictable assembly focuses on issues related to assembling component-based systems that predictably meet their quality attribute requirements. This paper introduces prediction-enabled component technology (PECT) as a means of packaging predictable assembly …

Benefits Of A Comprehensive Undergraduate Teaching Assistant Program, Christopher Goff, Brigitte Lahme

Christopher Goff

The Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA) Program at the University of Arizona exposes students to many different aspects of teaching an undergraduate mathematics course. The program's breadth generates various qualitative and quantitative benefits. Some of these benefits are that the UTAs improve their mathematics and communications skills, instructors have additional support both inside and outside the classroom, and mathematics students in classes with UTAs enjoy their mathematics classes more than students in similar classes without UTAs.

Search For A W1 Boson Decaying To A Top And Bottom Quark Pair In 1.8 Tev Pp̅ Collisions, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration Feb 2003

Search For A W1 Boson Decaying To A Top And Bottom Quark Pair In 1.8 Tev Pp̅ Collisions, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report the results of a search for a W′ boson produced in pp̅ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV using a 106 pb-1 data sample recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We observe no significant excess of events above background for a W′ boson decaying to a top and bottom quark pair. In a model where this boson would mediate interactions involving a massive right-handed neutrino (νR) and have standard model strength couplings, we use these data to exclude a W′ boson with mass between 225 and 536 GeV/c2 at 95% …

Anomalous Commutator Algebra For Conformal Quantum Mechanics, Horacio E. Camblong Feb 2003

Anomalous Commutator Algebra For Conformal Quantum Mechanics, Horacio E. Camblong

Physics and Astronomy

The structure of the commutator algebra for conformal quantum mechanics is considered. Specifically, it is shown that the emergence of a dimensional scale by renormalization implies the existence of an anomaly or quantum-mechanical symmetry breaking, which is explicitly displayed at the level of the generators of the SO(2,1) conformal group. Correspondingly, the associated breakdown of the conservation of the dilation and special conformal charges is derived.

Certain Pattern Recognition Tasks For Data Mining Problems., Pabitra Mitra Dr. Feb 2003

Certain Pattern Recognition Tasks For Data Mining Problems., Pabitra Mitra Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Pattern recognition (PR) is an activity that we humans normally excel in. We do it almost all the time, and without conscious effort. We receive information via our various sensory organs, which is processed instantaneously by our brain so that, almost immediately, we are able to identify the source of the information, without having made any perceptible effort. What is even more impressive is the accuracy with which we can perform recognition tasks even under non-ideal conditions, for instance, when the information that needs to be processed is vague, imprecise or even incomplete. In fact, most of our day-to-day activities …

Environment-Induced Degradation And Crack-Growth Studies Of Candidate Target Materials, Ajit K. Roy, Brendan O'Toole Feb 2003

Environment-Induced Degradation And Crack-Growth Studies Of Candidate Target Materials, Ajit K. Roy, Brendan O'Toole

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

During the past two years (2001-2002) of this project, the primary effort was focused on evaluating the effect of hydrogen on the cracking behavior of candidate target materials namely, Alloys EP-823, HT-9 and 422 in aqueous environments of different pH values at ambient and elevated temperatures. More recently, emphasis is being placed to evaluate the cracking behavior of these materials in molten lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) environment at much higher testing temperatures so as to compare the cracking susceptibility in environments containing molten metals and aqueous solutions, respectively. The most recent tests to evaluate the cracking susceptibility were primarily based on …

Modeling Corrosion In Oxygen Controlled Lbe Systems With Coupling Of Chemical Kinetics And Hydrodynamics: Quarterly Progress Report 12/1/02- 2/28/03, Samir Moujaes, Yitung Chen Feb 2003

Modeling Corrosion In Oxygen Controlled Lbe Systems With Coupling Of Chemical Kinetics And Hydrodynamics: Quarterly Progress Report 12/1/02- 2/28/03, Samir Moujaes, Yitung Chen

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The Lead-Bismuth eutectic (LBE) has been determined from previous experimental studies by the Russians and the European scientific community to be a potential material that can be used as a spallation target and coolant for the AAA proposed application.

Properly controlling the oxygen content in LBE can drastically reduce the LBE corrosion to structural steels. However, existing knowledge of material corrosion performance was obtained from point-wise testing with very limited density. The transport of oxygen and corrosion products, their interaction and variation of corrosion/precipitation along the flow are not well understood.

The first subtask of this project involves using a …

Use Of Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy For Stress-Strain Measurements, Ajit K. Roy

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The purpose of this collaborative research project involving the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and the Idaho State University (ISU) is to evaluate the feasibility of determining residual stresses of welded, bent (three-point-bend), and cold-worked engineering materials using a new nondestructive technique based on positron annihilation spectroscopy. The proposed technique is to use x-rays from a small MeV electron Linac to generate positrons inside the sample via pair production. This method can be used for materials characterization and investigation of defects in thick samples that could not be accomplished by conventional positron technique or other nondestructive methods. The data …

A Modeling Study Of O2 And Oh Airglow Perturbations Induced By Atmospheric Gravity Waves, Alan Z. Liu, Gary R. Swenson Feb 2003

A Modeling Study Of O2 And Oh Airglow Perturbations Induced By Atmospheric Gravity Waves, Alan Z. Liu, Gary R. Swenson

Physical Sciences - Daytona Beach

A one-dimensional model is used to investigate the relations between gravity waves and O2 and OH airglows perturbations. The amplitude and phase of the airglow perturbations induced by gravity waves (with period > 20 min) are calculated for different vertical wavelength (10–50 km) and damping rate. The model shows that for vertically propagating gravity waves, the amplitude of airglow perturbations observed from ground is larger for longer vertical wavelength, because of the smaller cancellation effect within each layer. The ratio of the amplitudes between O2 and OH is smaller for larger wave damping. For upward propagating (downward phase progression) …

Dynamical Electron-Electron Correlation In C²⁺ + He Simultaneous Target-Projectile Collisional Ionization, J. Fiol, Ronald E. Olson, R. Moshammer, J. Ullrich Feb 2003

Dynamical Electron-Electron Correlation In C²⁺ + He Simultaneous Target-Projectile Collisional Ionization, J. Fiol, Ronald E. Olson, R. Moshammer, J. Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Simultaneous target and projectile single ionization in 3.6 MeV u-1 C2++He collisions are considered, within a six-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo model. Analysis of the relative azimuthal angle between the two emitted electrons allows one to discriminate the ionization contribution produced by the two-centre dynamical electron-electron interaction from that due to nucleus-electron interactions. the present calculations agree well with cross section measurements recently performed in kinematically complete experiments.

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

We report on de Haas–van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations observed in the mixed state of the organic superconductor β″–(BEDT-TTF)₂SF₅CH₂CF₂SO₃ (BEDT-TTF stands for bisethylenedithio-tetrathiafulvalene) utilizing the field-modulation technique and torque magnetometry. At low temperatures (30 mK), the dHvA signal persists down to 1.4 T well below the upper critical field Bc2≈3.6T. Contrary to most theoretical predictions and previous experimental findings, no additional damping of the dHvA-oscillation amplitude, but a reduced damping of the dHvA signal is found. This highly unusual effect might indicate a reduced quasiparticle scattering rate or an additional oscillatory contribution in the superconducting state.

On The Approximability Of Linear Ordering And Related Np-Optimization Problems., Sounaka Mishra Dr. Feb 2003

On The Approximability Of Linear Ordering And Related Np-Optimization Problems., Sounaka Mishra Dr.

Doctoral Theses

We investigate approximability of both maximum and minimum linear ordering problems (MAX-LOP and MIN-LOP) and several related problems such as the well known feedback set problems, acyclie subdigraph problem and several others and their variants. We show that both MAX-LOP and MIN-LOP are strongly NP-complete, and MIN- LOP, MIN-QAP(S) (a special case of minimum quadratic assignment problem) and MIN-W-FAS are equivalent with respect to strict-reduction. The strict-equivalence is also established among these problems as well as MIN-W-FVS, with weights on arcs/vertices bounded by a polynomial, and the unweighted versions of the feedback set. problems. We also show that MAX-LOP is strict-equivalent …

Deformation Theory Of Dialgebras., Anita Majumdar Dr. Feb 2003

Deformation Theory Of Dialgebras., Anita Majumdar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The main objective of this thesis is to develop an algebraic deformation theury for associative dialgebras, which are binary quadratic algebras discovered by J.-L. Loday in (16). (17), and subisequently, to derive a G-algebra siructure ou the dialgebra colhomology with cocfticients in itself.Deformation theory dates back at Ieast to Riemann's 1837 memoir on alelian fianetions in which he studied IHanifolds of complex dimension one and calculated the mumber of parameters (called moduli) upon which a deformation depends. The modern theory of deformations of structures on manifolds was developed extensively ly Frolicher-Kodaira-Nijenhnis-Nirenberg-Spencer (13], [14], [15). [25|, [26).The study of deformations of …

Magnetic Resonance Studies On Lithium Intercalation Into Carbons, Xiao-Rong Zhou, Zhen-Ming Du, Lin Zhuang, Jun-Tao Lu Feb 2003

Magnetic Resonance Studies On Lithium Intercalation Into Carbons, Xiao-Rong Zhou, Zhen-Ming Du, Lin Zhuang, Jun-Tao Lu

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electron spin resonance(ESR) and 7Li_NMR magnetic resonance (7Li_NMR) studies on lithium intercalation into carbons were reviewed based on recently published papers, including those by the authors of this review. Two kinds of electronic spins were found in ESR studies. One corresponds to the charge carrier electrons and is called the Pauli spin. From the ESR intensity of Pauli spins, the curve of the density of electronic states can be deduced for the carbon material studied and, in turn, the contribution of the band model mechanism to the lithium intercalation can be calculated for the given carbon sample. The other …

Study Of Electrochemical Lithium Intercalation Performance Of Ni_(0.67)Mg_(0.33)O, Zhen-Cai Huang, Mao-Hui Chen, Guo-Tao Wu, Jin-Kua You, Zu-Geng Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

In the present work, Ni0.67Mg0.33O and NiO were produced by sol_gel method, and characterized by XRD, a rietveld refinement and the discharge/charge test.It was found that the magnesium_doping restrained the reduction of Ni and decreased the reversible capacity for the sample of Ni0.67Mg0.33O. But the formation of the solid solution after the magnesium_doping facilitated the high dispersion of NiO, and accordingly improved the electrochemical performance.

Application Of Biphenyl Electroploymerization For Overcharge Protection In Li-Ion Batteries, Li-Fen Xiao, Xin-Ping Ai, Yu-Liang Cao, Han-Xi Yang Feb 2003

Application Of Biphenyl Electroploymerization For Overcharge Protection In Li-Ion Batteries, Li-Fen Xiao, Xin-Ping Ai, Yu-Liang Cao, Han-Xi Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electropolymerization of biphenyl at overcharged positive electrode was investigated for overcharge protection of Li_ion batteries. Biphenyl in electrolyte as an additive can electrochemically polymerize at 4.5~4.75 V(vs. Li/Li+) to form a layer of conductive film on cathode surface. The surface film increases the internal resistance and the gases released during the electropolymerization also increases the internal pressure of the batteries, which therefore enhance the sensitivities of the electrical disconnecting devices. During prolonged overcharge, the growth of the conductive polymer film can create short circuit between the positive and negative electrodes and cause self_discharge of the batteries to a safer …

The Preparation And Characterization Of Zno-Pani Composite Film, Yan-Yan Xi, Huai-Guo Huang, Zhi-Xin Zheng, Ping Dong, Jian-Zhang Zhou, Ling-Ling Wu, Zhong-Hua Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

ZnO nanoparticle films were prepared on the Au film, PANI film and ITO by sol_gel method, and their morphological optical and photoelectrochemical properties were also studied. The results showed that the porous structure of PANI can suppress the aggregation of ZnO particles, resulting in the blue shift of on_set in the UV_Vis spectra and fluorescence spectra of ZnO_PANI composite film compared with that of ZnO_Au film. It was suggested that the ZnO_PANI composite film can be used in photoelectric coversion.

Behaviors Of Fe-Cr Alloys During Cavitation Damage, Xia Bai, Dong-Bai Sun, Hong-Ying Yu, Hui-Ming Meng, Hui-Qin Li, Zi-Shuang Fan

Journal of Electrochemistry

The influence of the surface galvanic effect on the behaviors of three Fe_Cr alloys during cavitation damage in NaCl solutions have been investigated. The results showed that the galvanic effect caused by the inhomogeneity between the undamaged surface of the alloy and the damaged one will be enhanced by the area ratio of the undamaged and the damaged. The behaviors of alloys during cavitation are closely related to both their mechanical performance and anti_corrosion capabilities.
