A Geometric Interpretation Of Milnor's Triple Invariants, Blake Mellor, Paul Melvin

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

Milnor's triple linking numbers of a link in the 3-sphere are interpreted geometrically in terms of the pattern of intersections of the Seifert surfaces of the components of the link. This generalizes the well known formula as an algebraic count of triple points when the pairwise linking numbers vanish.

Measuring The Prompt Atmospheric Neutrino Flux With Down-Going Muons In Neutrino Telescopes, Graciela Gelmini, Paolo Gondolo, Gabriele Varieschi

Physics Faculty Works

In the TeV energy region and above, the uncertainty in the level of prompt atmospheric neutrinos would limit the search for diffuse astrophysical neutrinos. We suggest that neutrino telescopes may provide an empirical determination of the flux of prompt atmospheric electron and muon neutrinos by measuring the flux of prompt down-going muons. Our suggestion is based on the consideration that prompt neutrino and prompt muon fluxes at sea level are almost identical.

Discrete Velocity Fields With Explicitly Computable Lagrangian Law, Curtis D. Bennett, Craig L. Zirbel Jan 2003

Discrete Velocity Fields With Explicitly Computable Lagrangian Law, Curtis D. Bennett, Craig L. Zirbel

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We introduce a class of random velocity fields on the periodic lattice and in discrete time having a certain hidden Markov structure. The generalized Lagrangian velocity (the velocity field as viewed from the location of a single moving particle) has similar hidden Markov structure, and its law is found explicitly. Its rate of convergence to equilibrium is studied in small numerical examples and in rigorous results giving absolute and relative bounds on the size of the second–largest eigenvalue modulus. The effect of molecular diffusion on the rate of convergence is also investigated; in some cases it slows convergence to equilibrium. …

Stably Folded De Novo Proteins From A Designed Combinatorial Library, David Moffet Jan 2003

Stably Folded De Novo Proteins From A Designed Combinatorial Library, David Moffet

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works

Binary patterning of polar and nonpolar amino acids has been used as the key design feature for constructing large combinatorial libraries of de novo proteins. Each position in a binary patterned sequence is designed explicitly to be either polar or nonpolar; however, the precise identities of these amino acids are varied extensively. The combinatorial underpinnings of the "binary code" strategy preclude explicit design of particular side chains at specified positions. Therefore, packing interactions cannot be specified a priori. To assess whether the binary code strategy can nonetheless produce well-folded de novo proteins, we constructed a second-generation library based upon a …

Storm Effects On Regional Beach Water Quality Along The Southern California Shoreline, Rachel T. Nobel, Stephen B. Weisberg, Molly K. Leecaster, Charles D. Mcgee, John Dorsey, Patricia Vainik, Victoria Orozco-Borbón

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Works

Two regional studies conducted during dry weather demonstrated that the Southern California Bight (SCB) shoreline has good water quality, except near areas that drain land-based runoff. Here, we repeat those regional studies 36 h after a rainstorm to assess the influence of runoff under high flow conditions. Two hundred and fifty-four shoreline sites between Santa Barbara, California and Ensenada, Mexico were sampled using a stratified-random sampling design with four strata: sandy beaches, rocky shoreline, shoreline adjacent to urban runoff outlets that flow intermittently, and shoreline adjacent to outlets that flow year-round. Each site was sampled for total coliforms, fecal coliforms …

Finding Common Ground: Collaboration Across The Disciplines In The Scholarship Of Teaching, Elaine K. Yakura, Curtis D. Bennett Jan 2003

Finding Common Ground: Collaboration Across The Disciplines In The Scholarship Of Teaching, Elaine K. Yakura, Curtis D. Bennett

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

Many recent writings on the scholarship of teaching discuss the need to locate this scholarship within the disciplines. The authors argue that while scholarship within the disciplines is important, it should not come at the expense of work across the disciplines. They demonstrate the usefulness of cross-disciplinary collaboration for the scholarship of teaching and learning through the specific example of how collaboration contributed to their understanding of the role of such scholarship in the teaching of mathematics and negotiations courses. The authors also outline some of the pitfalls of cross-disciplinary collaboration, and they offer suggestions for beginning collaborative initiatives.

Controls On The Delivery Of Fluvial Sediment To The Coastal Ocean: The Salinas River, California, Katherine L. Farnsworth Jan 2003

Controls On The Delivery Of Fluvial Sediment To The Coastal Ocean: The Salinas River, California, Katherine L. Farnsworth

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

To estimate delivery to the coastal ocean, a global river database was assembled. An estimated 35,000 km3 of freshwater, 4 * 10 6 tonnes of dissolved solids and 18.6 * 106 tonnes of suspended sediment are delivered annually. The global delivery of fluvial water and sediment, both suspended and dissolved, is dominated by Southeast Asia, due to the unique climatic, geologic and geomorphic character of the rivers in this region. Over 30% of the global freshwater and dissolved solid discharge, and an astounding 70% of the suspended sediment originate in this region. The Salinas River, central California, was the focus …

Recognizing Toxic Species In Aquatic Habitats: A Potential Concern In Lake Management, Mikolaj Kokocinski, Harold G. Marshall Jan 2003

Recognizing Toxic Species In Aquatic Habitats: A Potential Concern In Lake Management, Mikolaj Kokocinski, Harold G. Marshall

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The importance of distinguishing toxic and non-toxic algal species is becoming a more common problem for management decisions associated with various freshwater and estuarine habitats. An example is given where two dinoflagellates, originally unidentified as closely resembling the toxin producing Pfiesteria spp., have been compared to these species. In order to clarify any relationship to Pfiesteria spp., scanning electron microscopy was used to determine the plate tabulation patterns of these dinoflagellates and make comparisons to the tabulation present in Pfiesteria spp. The results indicated significant differences in the plate tabulations of these taxa to distinguish them from Pfiesteria …

On Regular Graphs Optimally Labeled With A Condition At Distance Two, John P. Georges, David W. Mauro Jan 2003

On Regular Graphs Optimally Labeled With A Condition At Distance Two, John P. Georges, David W. Mauro

Faculty Scholarship

For positive integers $j \geq k$, the $\lambda_{j,k}$-number of graph Gis the smallest span among all integer labelings of V(G) such that vertices at distance two receive labels which differ by at least k and adjacent vertices receive labels which differ by at least j. We prove that the $\lambda_{j,k}$-number of any r-regular graph is no less than the $\lambda_{j,k}$-number of the infinite r-regular tree $T_{\infty}(r)$. Defining an r-regular graph G to be $(j,k,r)$-optimal if and only if $\lambda_{j,k}(G) = \lambda_{j,k}(T_{\infty}(r))$, we establish the equivalence between $(j,k,r)$-optimal graphs and r-regular bipartite …

Robustly Transitive Sets And Heterodimensional Cycles, Christian Bonatti, Lorenzo J. Díaz, Enrique R. Pujals, Jorge Rocha Jan 2003

Robustly Transitive Sets And Heterodimensional Cycles, Christian Bonatti, Lorenzo J. Díaz, Enrique R. Pujals, Jorge Rocha

Publications and Research

It is known that all non-hyperbolic robustly transitive sets Λφ have a dominated splitting and, generically, contain periodic points of different indices. We show that, for a C1-dense open subset of diffeomorphisms φ, the indices of periodic points in a robust transitive set Λφ form an interval in ℕ. We also prove that the homoclinic classes of two periodic points in Λφ are robustly equal. Finally, we describe what sort of homoclinic tangencies may appear in Λφ by studying its dominated splittings.

Molecular Recognition Of No/No+ Via Multicenter (Charge-Transfer) Binding To Bridged Diarene Donors. Effect Of Structure On The Optical Transitions And Complexation Thermodynamics, Sergiy V. Rosokha, Sergey V. Lindeman, Rajendra Rathore, Jay K. Kochi Jan 2003

Kochi

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Bridged diarenes form very strong [1:1] complexes with nitrosonium/nitric oxide in which the NO moiety is optimally sandwiched in the cleft between a pair of cofacial aromatic rings which act as a molecular “Venus flytrap”. The spectral features of these associates are generally similar to those for [1:1] and [2:1] nitrosonium complexes with mononuclear alkyl-substituted benzenes, and they are appropriately described within the LCAO molecular-orbital methodology and the Mulliken (charge-transfer) formulation of donor/acceptor electronic transitions. The thermodynamics study indicates that the efficient binding is determined by (i) the close matching of the donor/acceptor redox potentials and (ii) the ability of …

Flame Retardancy Of Polystyrene Nanocomposites Based On An Oligomeric Organically-Modified Clay Containing Phosphate, Xiaoxia Zheng, Charles A. Wilkie Jan 2003

Flame Retardancy Of Polystyrene Nanocomposites Based On An Oligomeric Organically-Modified Clay Containing Phosphate, Xiaoxia Zheng, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Novel modified clays, which may enable the formation of flame retarded polystyrene nanocomposites by melt or solution blending, have been prepared using an ammonium salt which contains an oligomeric material consisting of vinylbenzyl chloride, styrene and vinyl phosphate reacting with dimethylhexadecylamine. These nanocomposites have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, cone calorimetry and the evaluation of mechanical properties. Melt blending is an effective, economical way to produce intercalated nanocomposites with greatly reduced peak heat release rate and a decreased total heat release; the polymer does not all undergo thermal degradation.

Synergy Between Conventional Phosphorus Fire Retardants And Organically-Modified Clays Can Lead To Fire Retardancy Of Styrenics, Grace Chigwada, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Polystyrene–clay nanocomposites combined with phosphorous-containing fire retardants have been prepared and used to explore the thermal stability and mechanical properties of the polymer formed. The amounts of fire retardants and clay used were varied to study the effect of each on thermal stability and mechanical properties of the polymer. The samples were prepared by bulk polymerization and analyzed by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, cone calorimetry, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy and the evaluation of mechanical properties. The thermal stability of the polymers is enhanced by the presence of the phosphorus-containing fire retardants.

An Xps Investigation Of Thermal Degradation And Charring On Poly(Vinyl Chloride)–Clay Nanocomposites, Jianxin Du, Dongyan Wang, Charles A. Wilkie, Jiangqi Wang Jan 2003

An Xps Investigation Of Thermal Degradation And Charring On Poly(Vinyl Chloride)–Clay Nanocomposites, Jianxin Du, Dongyan Wang, Charles A. Wilkie, Jiangqi Wang

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

More information concerning the thermal degradation and charring of nanocomposites of poly(vinyl chloride), dioctyl phthalate and clay has been obtained by the use of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the acquisition of the carbon (C1s), chlorine (Cl2p), and oxygen (O1s) spectra. In the cases of polystyrene–clay and poly(methyl methacrylate)–clay nanocomposites, it has been shown that the clay migrates to the surface as the temperature is raised and the polymer degrades, thereby confirming the barrier properties as a mechanism by which these materials function. For PVC–clay nanocomposites the surface at high temperatures is dominated by carbon, and not the oxygen of the …

Nanocomposites Based On Poly (Ε-Caprolactone) (Pcl)/Clay Hybrid: Polystyrene, High Impact Polystyrene, Abs, Polypropylene And Polyethylene, Xiaoxia Zheng, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Nanocomposites of polystyrene, high impact polystyrene, acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene terploymer, polypropylene and polyethylene have been prepared using an organically-modified clay that contains polycaprolactone—PCL-modified clay. Depending upon the mode of preparation of the PCL-modified clay, all three types of nanocomposites, immiscible, intercalated and exfoliated, may be produced. The materials have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, cone calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and the evaluation of mechanical properties.
