Synergy Between Conventional Phosphorus Fire Retardants And Organically-Modified Clays Can Lead To Fire Retardancy Of Styrenics, Grace Chigwada, Charles A. Wilkie Jan 2003

Synergy Between Conventional Phosphorus Fire Retardants And Organically-Modified Clays Can Lead To Fire Retardancy Of Styrenics, Grace Chigwada, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Polystyrene–clay nanocomposites combined with phosphorous-containing fire retardants have been prepared and used to explore the thermal stability and mechanical properties of the polymer formed. The amounts of fire retardants and clay used were varied to study the effect of each on thermal stability and mechanical properties of the polymer. The samples were prepared by bulk polymerization and analyzed by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, cone calorimetry, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy and the evaluation of mechanical properties. The thermal stability of the polymers is enhanced by the presence of the phosphorus-containing fire retardants.

An Xps Investigation Of Thermal Degradation And Charring On Poly(Vinyl Chloride)–Clay Nanocomposites, Jianxin Du, Dongyan Wang, Charles A. Wilkie, Jiangqi Wang

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

More information concerning the thermal degradation and charring of nanocomposites of poly(vinyl chloride), dioctyl phthalate and clay has been obtained by the use of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the acquisition of the carbon (C1s), chlorine (Cl2p), and oxygen (O1s) spectra. In the cases of polystyrene–clay and poly(methyl methacrylate)–clay nanocomposites, it has been shown that the clay migrates to the surface as the temperature is raised and the polymer degrades, thereby confirming the barrier properties as a mechanism by which these materials function. For PVC–clay nanocomposites the surface at high temperatures is dominated by carbon, and not the oxygen of the …

Nanocomposites Based On Poly (Ε-Caprolactone) (Pcl)/Clay Hybrid: Polystyrene, High Impact Polystyrene, Abs, Polypropylene And Polyethylene, Xiaoxia Zheng, Charles A. Wilkie Jan 2003

Nanocomposites Based On Poly (Ε-Caprolactone) (Pcl)/Clay Hybrid: Polystyrene, High Impact Polystyrene, Abs, Polypropylene And Polyethylene, Xiaoxia Zheng, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Nanocomposites of polystyrene, high impact polystyrene, acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene terploymer, polypropylene and polyethylene have been prepared using an organically-modified clay that contains polycaprolactone—PCL-modified clay. Depending upon the mode of preparation of the PCL-modified clay, all three types of nanocomposites, immiscible, intercalated and exfoliated, may be produced. The materials have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, cone calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and the evaluation of mechanical properties.

In Situ Reactive Blending To Prepare Polystyrene-Clay And Polypropylene-Clay Nanocomposites, Dongyan Wang, Charles A. Wilkie Jan 2003

In Situ Reactive Blending To Prepare Polystyrene-Clay And Polypropylene-Clay Nanocomposites, Dongyan Wang, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Nanocomposites of polystyrene and polypropylene with organically-modified clay may be prepared by melt blending in a Brabender mixer the clay and the polymer. The presence of maleic anhydride increases the likelihood of nanocomposite formation for polystyrene but is less important for polypropylene. The materials that result are immiscible materials, in that the clay is not uniformly distributed throughout the polymer matrix, but there is polymer inserted between the clay layers. The results from cone calorimetry suggest that nanocomposite formation has occurred, since there is a significant reduction in the peak heat release rate.

Diffractive photoproduction of vector mesons, γp → VY, where Y is a proton-dissociative system, has been measured in e+p interactions with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 25 pb-1. The differential cross section, dσ/dt, is presented for 1.2 < -t < 12 GeV2, where t is the square of the four-momentum transferred to the vector meson. The data span the range in photon-proton centre-of-mass energy, W, from 80 GeV to 120 GeV. The t distributions are well fit by a power law, dσ/dt ∝ (-t)-n. The slope of the effective Pomeron trajectory, measured from the W dependence of the ρ0 and φ cross sections in bins of t, is consistent with zero. The ratios dσγp→φY/dt to dσγp→ρ0Y/dt and dσγp→J/ψY/dt to dσγp→ρ0Y/dt increase with increasing -t. Decay-angle analyses for ρ0, φ and J/ψ mesons have been carried out. For the ρ0 and φ mesons, contributions from single and double helicity flip are observed. The results are compared to expectations of theoretical models.

A search for narrow-width resonances that decay into electron+jet or neutrino+jet has been performed with the ZEUS detector at the DESY ep collider HERA operating at center-of-mass energies of 300 and 318 GeV. An integrated e+p luminosity of 114.8 pb-1 and e-p luminosity of 16.7 pb-1 were used. No evidence for any resonance was found. Limits were derived on the Yukawa coupling λ as a function of the mass of a hypothetical resonance that has arbitrary decay branching ratios into eq or vq. These limits also apply to squarks predicted by R-parity-violating supersymmetry. Limits for the production of leptoquarks described …

Published Salinity Information And Wa Farmers. An Investigation Into The Effectiveness Of Current Published Salinity Information, Stephen Lloyd Jan 2003

Published Salinity Information And Wa Farmers. An Investigation Into The Effectiveness Of Current Published Salinity Information, Stephen Lloyd

Agriculture reports

Salinity is one of the greatest environmental threats facing Western Australia. Extension of salinity information to WA farmers is a key process in helping the rural community manage this threat. Published information is an important part of this extension. However, there has been very little research into the use and effectiveness of published salinity information. The aim of this study was to investigate:

• Effectiveness of current salinity information products and services in relation to decision making and practice change by WA farmers;

• Possible improvement in salinity publications to better assist WA farmers in decision making and practice change.

A Monopole Homology For Integral Homology 3-Spheres, Weiping Li Jan 2003

A Monopole Homology For Integral Homology 3-Spheres, Weiping Li

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

To an integral homology 3-sphere Y, we assign a well-defined {\mathbb Z}-graded (monopole) homology MH_*(Y, I_{\eta}(\Theta; \eta_0)) whose construction in principle follows from the instanton Floer theory with the dependence of the spectral flow I_{\eta}(\Theta; \eta_0), where \Theta is the unique U(1)-reducible monopole of the Seiberg-Witten equation on Y and \eta_0 is a reference perturbation datum. The definition uses the moduli space of monopoles on Y \times {\mathbb R} introduced by Seiberg-Witten in studying smooth 4-manifolds. We show that the monopole homology MH_*(Y, I_{\eta}(\Theta; \eta_0)) is invariant among Riemannian metrics with same I_{\eta}(\Theta; \eta_0). This provides a chamber-like structure for …

On Cofinite Subgroups Of Mapping Class Groups, Mustafa Korkmaz Jan 2003

On Cofinite Subgroups Of Mapping Class Groups, Mustafa Korkmaz

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

For every positive integer n, we exhibit a cofinite subgroup \Gamma_n of the mapping class group of a surface of genus at most two such that \Gamma_n admits an epimorphism onto a free group of rank n. We conclude that H^1 (\Gamma_n; {\mathbb Z}) has rank at least n and the dimension of the second bounded cohomology of each of these mapping class groups is the cardinality of the continuum. In the case of genus two, the groups \Gamma_n can be chosen not to contain the Torelli group. Similarly for hyperelliptic mapping class groups. We also exhibit an automorphism of …

Development Of A Regional Curve To Relate Discharge And Drainage Area To Hydraulic Geometry For The Red River Of The North Basin, Melanie H. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Restoration of riparian corridors and stream channels is important for many reasons, including preserving water quality, maintaining channel stability and controlling floods. Regional hydraulic geometry curves allow estimation of stable hydraulic geometry relationships that are necessary to engineer successful restoration projects. These curves can also be used to approximate discharge data for ungaged streams with lmown hydraulic geometry and drainage area. Hydraulic geometry data were collected in the field for twenty-five stream gage sites in the Red River of the North Basin. Recurrence intervals for bankfull ranged from 1.2 to 1.6 years, with an average recurrence interval of 1.4. Discharge …

Determination of chemical information with synchrotron radiation is an area of great scientific interest, and expanding the range of available techniques is the topic of this dissertation. The experimental methods described herein allows for a significant advancement of the availability of subtle chemical information. This dissertation uses ionizing radiation to study three chemical systems. First, the l=3 shape resonance in CO is investigated using a cryogenically cooled gas jet. Shape resonant effects have been studied for many years. Previously, this was accomplished on the vibrational structure of molecules with a limited ability to determine the rotational substructure effects. A dramatic …

Network Traffic Properties Of Bimodal Multicast Protocol, Öznur Özkasap, Mi̇ne Çağlar Jan 2003

Network Traffic Properties Of Bimodal Multicast Protocol, Öznur Özkasap, Mi̇ne Çağlar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The popularity of large-scale distributed applications, such as videoconferencing, multimedia dissemination, electronic stock exchange and distributed cooperative work, has grown with the availability of high-speed networks and the expansion of the Internet. The key property of this type of applications is the need to distribute data among multiple participants together with an application-specific quality of service needs. This fact makes scalable multicast protocols an essential underlying communication structure. Although there exist several studies investigating the traffic characteristics of unicast communication, multicast traffic has not been examined extensively in previous studies. It is well known that the aggregate traffic properties of …

The \Mathcal{H}_\Infty Model Matching Problem With One Degree Of Freedom Static State Feedback, Murat Akin, Ati̇lla Bi̇r

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The aim of this paper is to develop a new approach for a solution of the continuous-time model matching problem by a static state feedback in the sense of \mathcal{H}_\infty optimality criterion by using Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). The main contribution could briefly be described as to reformulate the model matching problem in LMI formulation, to present the solvability conditions and to give a design procedure for the one degree of freedom static state feedback control law. Finally, the results are applied to an example system.

New Approaches For On-Line Tuning Of The Linear Sliding Surface Slope In Sliding Mode Controllers, Sezai̇ Tokat, İbrahi̇m Eksi̇n, Müjde Güzelkaya Jan 2003

New Approaches For On-Line Tuning Of The Linear Sliding Surface Slope In Sliding Mode Controllers, Sezai̇ Tokat, İbrahi̇m Eksi̇n, Müjde Güzelkaya

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The main objective of this study is to propose new approaches for on-line tuning of the linear sliding surface slope in sliding mode controllers. The new approaches are developed for a class of second order systems on new coordinate axes, one of which is the classical sliding surface and the other one is naturally chosen to be orthogonal to it. The control input of the sliding mode control law is then modified accordingly by applying the Lyapunov stability condition. The adjustment of the linear sliding surface slope defined in the new coordinate axes is achieved by tuning a new parameter …

Improving The Security And Flexibility Of One-Time Passwords By Signature Chains, Kemal Biçakci, Nazi̇fe Baykal Jan 2003

Improving The Security And Flexibility Of One-Time Passwords By Signature Chains, Kemal Biçakci, Nazi̇fe Baykal

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

While the classical attack of ``monitor the network and intercept the password'' can be avoided by advanced protocols like SSH, one-time passwords are still considered a viable alternative or a supplement for software authentication since they are the only ones that safeguard against attacks on insecure client machines. In this paper by using public-key techniques we present a method called signature chain alternative to Lamport's hash chain to improve security and flexibility of one-time passwords. Our proposition improves the security because first, like other public-key authentication protocols, the server and the user do not share a secret, thereby eliminating attacks …

The Aqueous Phase Yield Of Alkyl Nitrates From Roo+No: Implications For Photochemical Production In Seawater, Elizabeth E. Dahl, Eric S. Saltzman, Warren J. De Bruyn

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Alkyl nitrates have been observed in remote oceanic regions of the troposphere and in the surface ocean. The mechanism for their production in the oceans is not known. A likely source is the reaction of ROO + NO (where R is an alkyl group). Steady-state laboratory experiments show that alkyl nitrates are produced in the aqueous phase via this reaction, with branching ratios of 0.23 +/- 0.04, 0.67 +/- 0.03, and 0.71 +/- 0.04 for methyl, ethyl, and propyl nitrate respectively. The branching ratios in aqueous solution are significantly higher than in the gas phase. Irradiation of surface seawaters yield …

Renormalization-Group Studies Of Three Model Systems Far From Equilibrium, Ivan T. Georgiev Jan 2003

Renormalization-Group Studies Of Three Model Systems Far From Equilibrium, Ivan T. Georgiev

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the development of analytical and computational techniques for systems far from equilibrium and their application to three model systems. Each of the model systems reaches a non-equilibrium steady state and exhibits one or more phase transitions. We first introduce a new position-space renormalization-group approach and illustrate its application using the one-dimensional fully asymmetric exclusion process. We have constructed a recursion relation for the relevant dynamic parameters for this model and have reproduced all of the important critical features of the model, including the exact positions of the critical point and the first and second order phase boundaries. …

People In Nature: Environmental History Of The Kennebec River, Maine, Daniel J. Michor Jan 2003

People In Nature: Environmental History Of The Kennebec River, Maine, Daniel J. Michor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The quality of a river affects the tributaries, lakes, and estuary it feeds; it affects the wildlife and vegetation that depend on the river for energy, nutrients, and habitat, and also affects the human community in the form of use, access, pride, and sustainability. In an age of mass consumerism and materialism, dwindling natural resources and wild spaces, and advanced technology, the ability to make a living and at the same time enjoy the benefits of rural living is increasingly difficult. Using the entire Kennebec River watershed as the scale of investigation with particular focus on the river corridor itself, …

Neuro Emission Controller For Minimizing Cyclic Dispersion In Spark Ignition Engines, Pingan He, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2003

Neuro Emission Controller For Minimizing Cyclic Dispersion In Spark Ignition Engines, Pingan He, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel neural network (NN) controller is developed to control spark ignition (SI) engines at extreme lean conditions. The purpose of neurocontroller is to reduce the cyclic dispersion at lean operation even when the engine dynamics are unknown. The stability analysis of the closed-loop control system is given and the boundedness of all signals is ensured. Results demonstrate that the cyclic dispersion is reduced significantly using the proposed controller. The neuro controller can also be extended to minimize engine emissions with high EGR levels, where similar complex cyclic dynamics are observed. Further, the proposed approach can be applied to control …

Notes On Interpolation In The Generalized Schur Class. Ii. Nudelman's Problem, Daniel Alpay, T. Constantinescu, A. Dijksma, J. Rovnyak, A. Dijksma

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

An indefinite generalization of Nudel′man’s problem is used in a systematic approach to interpolation theorems for generalized Schur and Nevanlinna functions with interior and boundary data. Besides results on existence criteria for Pick-Nevanlinna and Carath´eodory-Fej´er interpolation, the method yields new results on generalized interpolation in the sense of Sarason and boundary interpolation, including properties of the finite Hilbert transform relative to weights. The main theorem appeals to the Ball and Helton almost-commutant lifting theorem to provide criteria for the existence of a solution to Nudel′man’s problem.

Digitization In An Archival Environment, Sally Mckay Jan 2003

Digitization In An Archival Environment, Sally Mckay

E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)

Introduction

Cultural institutions such as museums, libraries, archives, and historical societies house remarkable collections of cultural artifacts. It is the responsibility of the staff working for those institutions to preserve, protect and provide responsible stewardship for the materials, and to the best of their ability, provide continued long-term access (Russell, 2000).

Advances in technology allow institutions to provide expanded access and education; however, there are important priorities that must be addressed prior to embarking on a digital conversion project.

Digitization in an archival environment includes taking a physical object or analog item, such as an art object, a tape recording, …

Diffusion Of A Rodlike Virus In Complex Solutions, Randall Charles Cush Jan 2003

Diffusion Of A Rodlike Virus In Complex Solutions, Randall Charles Cush

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Entanglement phenomena in concentrated polymer solutions remain an interesting and challenging problem. It is still unclear how entanglement onset affects polymer chain motion at small distance scales. One way to study such motion is to follow the diffusion of a probe particle while increasing the concentration of the polymer. Many such studies have been done using probes ranging from linear and star polymers to various colloidal particles; however, relatively few studies have used rodlike probes. Rodlike probes are potentially more interesting due to the added information that may be gained by following rotational as well as translational diffusion. The anisotropic …

Genome Analysis: Mutation Analysis Using Near Infrared Laser-Induced Fluorescence (Nir-Lif) And Single Molecule Detection In Microfluidic Devices, Musundi Ben Wabuyele

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A number of genotyping methods have been developed for mutation analysis, each of which has its own unique advantage. DNA amplification via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) provides an unlimited supply of material for subsequent genetic analysis even in case where only a single copy of the DNA molecule is present in the sample. Research presented in this dissertation first examines the efficiency of in vitro amplification of single copy DNA with subsequent sequencing analysis of PCR product. The PCR products (amplicons) were investigated for possible alteration, distortions or mutations due to the amplification process. The sequencing data for single copy …
