Design And Synthesis Of Constrained Dipeptide Units For Use As Β-Sheet Promoters, Umut Oguz Jan 2003

Design And Synthesis Of Constrained Dipeptide Units For Use As Β-Sheet Promoters, Umut Oguz

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The study of factors promoting beta-sheet formation has recently gained interest due to the suspected involvement of beta-sheets in brain degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (CJD) and bovine spongiform encephalopathy. Understanding beta-sheet formation and the factors that stabilize beta-sheet structure may serve as a basis for future drug design. The extended structure of a beta-sheet can be stabilized by constrained amino acid analogs that are pre-organized to adopt the extended conformation. In this dissertation using innovative synthetic organic chemistry methods, two dipeptide units are designed and synthesized that are constrained to form the extended conformation and …

Analyzing The Impact Of Changing Software Requirements: A Traceability-Based Methodology, James Steven O'Neal Jan 2003

Analyzing The Impact Of Changing Software Requirements: A Traceability-Based Methodology, James Steven O'Neal

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Software undergoes change at all stages of the software development process. Changing requirements represent risks to the success and completion of a project. It is critical for project management to determine the impact of requirement changes in order to control the change process. We present a requirements traceability based impact analysis methodology to predictively evaluate requirement changes for software development projects. Trace-based Impact Analysis Methodology (TIAM) is a methodology utilizing the trace information, along with attributes of the work products and traces, to define a requirement change impact metric for determining the severity of a requirement change. We define the …

Molecular-Dynamics Simulations Of Self-Assembled Monolayers (Sam) On Parallel Computers, Satyavani Vemparala Jan 2003

Molecular-Dynamics Simulations Of Self-Assembled Monolayers (Sam) On Parallel Computers, Satyavani Vemparala

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the properties of self-assembled monolayers, particularly alkanethiols and Poly (ethylene glycol) terminated alkanethiols. These simulations are based on realistic interatomic potentials and require scalable and portable multiresolution algorithms implemented on parallel computers. Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of self-assembled alkanethiol monolayer systems have been carried out using an all-atom model involving a million atoms to investigate their structural properties as a function of temperature, lattice spacing and molecular chain-length. Results show that the alkanethiol chains tilt from the surface normal by a collective angle of 25o along next-nearest neighbor direction at 300K. At …

Infrared-Active Vibron Bands Associated With Substitutional Impurities In Solid Parahydrogen, Robert Hinde Jan 2003

Infrared-Active Vibron Bands Associated With Substitutional Impurities In Solid Parahydrogen, Robert Hinde

Chemistry Publications and Other Works

We present a model for the line shapes of infrared-active Q1(0) vibron bands observed in solid parahydrogen doped with low concentrations of spherical substitutional impurities. The line shapes are highly sensitive to the H2 vibrational dependence of the dopant–H2 interaction. When this vibrational dependence is strong, the dopant can trap the infrared-active vibron in its first solvation shell; in this case, the trapped vibron manifests itself in the absorption spectrum as a narrow feature to the red of the pure solid’s vibron band.

Ordering Genetic Algorithm Genomes With Reconstructability Analysis, Stephen Shervais, Martin Zwick Jan 2003

Ordering Genetic Algorithm Genomes With Reconstructability Analysis, Stephen Shervais, Martin Zwick

Systems Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The building block hypothesis implies that genetic algorithm effectiveness is influenced by the relative location of epistatic genes on the chromosome. We find that this influence exists, but depends on the generation in which it is measured. Early in the search process it may be more effective to have epistatic genes widely separated. Late in the search process, effectiveness is improved when they are close together. The early search effect is weak but still statistically significant; the late search effect is much stronger and plainly visible. We demonstrate both effects with a set of simple problems, and show that infonnation-theoretic …

Instance Based Attribute Identification In Database Integration, Ee Peng Lim, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang Jan 2003

Instance Based Attribute Identification In Database Integration, Ee Peng Lim, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most research on attribute identification in database integration has focused on integrating attributes using schema and summary information derived from the attribute values. No research has attempted to fully explore the use of attribute values to perform attribute identification. We propose an attribute identification method that employs schema and summary instance information as well as properties of attributes derived from their instances. Unlike other attribute identification methods that match only single attributes, our method matches attribute groups for integration. Because our attribute identification method fully explores data instances, it can identify corresponding attributes to be integrated even when schema information …

Measurement Of The Neutron (Helium-3) Spin Structure Functions At Low 4-Momentum: A Connection Between The Bjorken And Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn Sum Rule, Pibero Kisa Djawotho Jan 2003

Measurement Of The Neutron (Helium-3) Spin Structure Functions At Low 4-Momentum: A Connection Between The Bjorken And Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn Sum Rule, Pibero Kisa Djawotho

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation presents results of experiment E94-010 performed at Jefferson Laboratory (simply known as JLab) in Hall A.;The experiment aimed to measure the low Q2 evolution of the Gerasimov-DrellHearn (GDH) integral from Q 2 = 0.1 to 0.9 GeV2. The GDH sum rule at the real photon point provides an important test of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The low Q2 evolution of the GDH integral contests various resonance models, Chiral Perturbation Theory (chiPT) and lattice QCD calculations, but more importantly, it helps us understand the transition between partonic and hadronic degrees of freedom. at high Q2, beyond 1 GeV2, the difference …

The Effect Of An Adsorbate Upon Secondary Emission Properties Of Low -Energy Ion Bombarded Metallic And Semiconductor Substrates, Wendy Sara Vogan Jan 2003

The Effect Of An Adsorbate Upon Secondary Emission Properties Of Low -Energy Ion Bombarded Metallic And Semiconductor Substrates, Wendy Sara Vogan

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The absolute probabilities for low energy ion bombardment induced secondary emission of electrons and anions have been measured as a function of adsorbate coverage of the surface. The primary ion beams were incident at less than 500 eV on metallic, semiconducting and insulating surfaces. The adsorbate used was chiefly oxygen, and the coverage range studied was zero to about one monolayer. The presence of an adsorbate was observed to significantly enhance secondary emission of electrons and anions in the case of O - and Na+ impacting metallic (W, Al) and semiconducting (Si) substrates; the effect of the adsorbate was little …

A Mycobacterium-Inducible Nramp In Striped Bass Morone Saxatilis, Erin Jeffrey Burge

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In mammals, the natural resistance-associated macrophage protein 1 gene, Nramp1, plays a major role in resistance to mycobacterial infections. Chesapeake Bay (USA) striped bass, Morone saxatilis, are currently experiencing an epizootic of mycobacteriosis that threatens the health of this ecologically and economically important species. This dissertation characterizes an Nramp gene in this species (MsNramp ) and provide evidence for induction following Mycobacterium exposure. The striped bass MsNramp gene and 554 amino acid sequence contain all the signal features of the Nramp family, including a topology of 12 transmembrane domains (TM), the transport protein specific 'binding-protein-dependent transport system inner membrane component …

Equations Of Parametric Surfaces With Base Points Via Syzygies, Haohao Wang Jan 2003

Equations Of Parametric Surfaces With Base Points Via Syzygies, Haohao Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Suppose $S$ is a parametrized surface in complex projective 3-space $mathbf{P}^3$ given as the image of $phi: mathbf{P}^1 imes mathbf{P}^1 o mathbf{P}^3$. The implicitization problem is to compute an implicit equation $F=0$ of $S$ using the parametrization $phi$. An algorithm using syzygies exists for computing $F$ if $phi$ has no base points, i.e. $phi$ is everywhere defined. This work is an extension of this algorithm to the case of a surface with multiple base points of total multiplicity k. We accomplish this in three chapters. In Chapter 2, we develop the concept and properties of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity in biprojective spaces. …

Gravitational Radiation Detectability Of Supernova 1987a'S Remnant Fully Matched Filter For Double Resonant Gravitational Detector, Giovanni Santostasi Jan 2003

Gravitational Radiation Detectability Of Supernova 1987a'S Remnant Fully Matched Filter For Double Resonant Gravitational Detector, Giovanni Santostasi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Part I There is some observational evidence of the presence of a pulsating light source in the remnant of the supernova (SN) 1987A [1]. This source is considered to be a rotating neutron star. Fourier analysis of the light intensity of this source reveals a main narrow frequency peak and side bands that are understood as a modulation of the main sinusoidal signal. A particular model of the neutron star invokes a precessing object to explain the modulation. From the Fourier spectrum of the source and changes in the frequency value, we can determine important parameters of the spinning neutron …

The Kauffman Bracket Skein Module Of The Quaternionic Manifold, John Michael Harris Jan 2003

The Kauffman Bracket Skein Module Of The Quaternionic Manifold, John Michael Harris

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this work, we study the structure of the Kauffman bracket skein module of the quaternionic manifold over the field of rational functions. We begin with a brief survey of manifolds whose Kauffman bracket skein modules are known, and proceed in Chapter 2 by recalling the facts from Temperley-Lieb recoupling theory that we use in the proofs. In Chapter 3, using recoupling theory and with Mathematica's assistance, we index an infinite presentation of the skein module, and conjecture that it is five-dimensional. In Chapter 4, using a new set of relations, we prove that the skein module is indeed spanned …

Ann Wave Prediction Model For Winter Storms And Hurricanes, Jun-Young. Kim Jan 2003

Ann Wave Prediction Model For Winter Storms And Hurricanes, Jun-Young. Kim

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Currently available wind-wave prediction models require a prohibitive amount of computing time for simulating non-linear wave-wave interactions. Moreover, some parts of wind-wave generation processes are not fully understood yet. For this reason accurate predictions are not always guaranteed. In contrast, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) techniques are designed to recognize the patterns between input and output so that they can save considerable computing time so that real-time wind-wave forecast can be available to the navy and commercial ships. For this reason, this study tries to use ANN techniques to predict waves for winter storms and hurricanes with much less computing time …

Performance Measurement Framework For Hierarchical Text Classification, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun, Wee-Keong Ng Jan 2003

Performance Measurement Framework For Hierarchical Text Classification, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun, Wee-Keong Ng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hierarchical text classification or simply hierarchical classification refers to assigning a document to one or more suitable categories from a hierarchical category space. In our literature survey, we have found that the existing hierarchical classification experiments used a variety of measures to evaluate performance. These performance measures often assume independence between categories and do not consider documents misclassified into categories that are similar or not far from the correct categories in the category tree. In this paper, we therefore propose new performance measures for hierarchical classification. The proposed performance measures consist of category similarity measures and distance-based measures that consider …

Assessment Of Potential Environmental Impacts Of Nature-Based Tours Originating Within Clark County, Nevada, Beth Domowicz Jan 2003

Assessment Of Potential Environmental Impacts Of Nature-Based Tours Originating Within Clark County, Nevada, Beth Domowicz

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this thesis was to assess the potential magnitude of negative environmental damage of nature-based tours originating in Clark County, Nevada. An ordinal ranking system was used for assessment of five variables. These variables were resource use, noise pollution, soil degradation, vegetation degradation, and wildlife disturbance. There were two proposed answers. The first was that as distance increased, negative tour impact would increase. This was not supported, since tours had high impacts for destinations that were close by and far away. The second was that most tours were not causing high damage to the environment. This hypothesis was …

Data

The Center for Coastal Resources Management (CCRM) at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has generated Shoreline Situation Reports (SSRs) for coastal localities in the state of Maryland. This effort compliments a parallel effort in Virginia by the same group. SSRs were developed by VIMS in the 1970s for Virginia and have been the foundation for shoreline management planning in Tidewater Virginia ever since. CCRM has developed new protocols for collecting, disseminating, and reporting data relevant to shoreline management issues using state of the art mapping and remote sensing techniques. New SSRs are being generated on a county by …

A Framework To Utilise Urban Bus Data For Advanced Data Analysis, Markus Hofmann, Brendan Tierney, Margaret M. O'Mahony Jan 2003

A Framework To Utilise Urban Bus Data For Advanced Data Analysis, Markus Hofmann, Brendan Tierney, Margaret M. O'Mahony

Conference papers

Most urban bus operators collect detailed data on their respective transportation networks using electronic fare collection systems. However, contrary to the opinion of other service industries that this data is a valuable resource, many bus operators have tended not to fully utilise these resources. International experience suggests using innovative technologies and methodologies such as data warehousing, Online Analytical Processing (OLAP), and data mining, to derive the maximum benefit from this data. Still bus operators tend not to keep the full range of data in a form, which is easy to access or utilise, and therefore, are not able to apply …

Reactions Of Boranes And Metallaboranes With Phosphines, Lawrence Barton, Oleg Volkov, Mitsuhiro Hata, Paul Mcquade, Nigam Rath

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

This paper reports extensions of the well-established field of phosphine–borane chemistry. Linked clusters, for example, {[(PPh3)2(CO)OsB4H7-3-BH2-PPh2]2 [(Fe(C5H4)2]}, are formed in reactions of rigid backboned bidentate phosphines with {2,2,2-(PPh3)2(CO)-nido-2-OsB5H9]. Reaction of bidentate phosphines with the unsaturated clusters [8,8-PPh3)2-nido-8,7-RhSB9H10] and [9,9-(PPh3)2-nido-9,7,8-RhC2B8 H11] leads to the isolation of novel species such as {1-(PPh3)[1,3-(µ-dppm)]-closo -1,2-RhSB9H8},with a dppm molecule bridging adjacent metal and boron vertices in the cage, [1,1-(ç2-dppe)-3-(ç1-dppm)-closo-1,2-RhSB 9H8], a mixed ligand system, and {9,9-ç2-[(ç2-BH3)PPh2PCH2 PPh2]-nido- 9,7,8-RhC2B8H11} which contains a bidentate dppm BH3 moiety. The formation of bidentate phosphine-linked main group transition-metal moieties such as [BH3PPh2(CH)nPPh2IrCp*Cl2] is also described as is an example of …

Category Of Nonlinear Evolution Equations, Algebraic Structure, And R-Matrix, Zhijun Qiao, Cewen Cao, Walter Strampp

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper we deal with the category of nonlinear evolution equations ~NLEEs! associated with the spectral problem and provide an approach for constructing their algebraic structure and r-matrix. First we introduce the category of NLEEs, which is composed of various positive order and negative order hierarchies of NLEEs both integrable and nonintegrable. The whole category of NLEEs possesses a generalized Lax representation. Next, we present two different Lie algebraic structures of the Lax operator: one of them is universal in the category, i.e., independent of the hierarchy, while the other one is nonuniversal in the hierarchy, i.e., dependent on …

Under The Plastic: A Quantitative Look At Dvd Video Encoding And Its Impact On Video Modeling, Wu-Chi Feng, Jin Choi, Wu-Chang Feng, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we examine the DVD encoding process and the implications this process has video modeling and network traffic analysis. We have assembled a system that allows us to extract the video data from the DVDs as they were encoded for distribution. Analyzing the resulting video trace data, we describe how DVD encodings have evolved over time. In addition, our findings show that the underlying video content is fundamentally different than those produced by basic consumer video capture boards. We demonstrate how this affects current video modeling proposals and their affect on network traffic characterization. This research is based …

To the thousands of Tidewater residents who encountered this storm on September 18, 2003, Hurricane Isabelshowed many faces, none of them a welcome sight. I would like to dwell for a moment on three that I saw –three different physical traits that tell us not only what we‟ve just experienced from Isabel, in terms of high winds and high water, but what we might expect from other storms like her in the future. Two of these traits –storm surgeand storm tide-are governed by probability. Like rolls of the dice, they have odds but no certainty about them. The third -sea …

The annual trading agent competition offers agent designers a forum for evaluating programmed trading techniques in a challenging market scenario. TAC aims to spur research by enabling researchers to compare techniques on a common problem and build on each other's ideas. A fixed set of assumptions and environment settings facilitates communication of methods and results. As a multiyear event, TAC lets researchers observe trading agents' progress over time, in effect accelerating the evolution of an adapted population of traders. Given all the participant effort invested, it is incumbent on us to learn as much from the experience as possible. After …
