Tight Coupling Between Soil Moisture And The Surface Radiation Budget In Semiarid Environments: Implications For Landatmosphere Interactions, Eric E. Small, Shirley A. Kurc
Tight Coupling Between Soil Moisture And The Surface Radiation Budget In Semiarid Environments: Implications For Landatmosphere Interactions, Eric E. Small, Shirley A. Kurc
Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications
Observations are used to examine how soil moisture influences the surface radiation budget, ground heat flux, and available energy in semiarid environments. Defining this relationship is critical to understand interactions between the land surface and the atmosphere, in particular assessing if a feedback exists between soil moisture and rainfall anomalies. We use two summers of data collected from semiarid grassland and shrubland ecosystems in central New Mexico. The response of surface radiation budget components and other variables to soil moisture variations are quantified via linear regression. Then, the variations are scaled over the observed range of soil moisture (15% volumetric …

The Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (HRC) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has analyzed approximately 200 groundwater samples for over 60 trace elements and major solutes over the past ten years. These samples represent groundwaters from the Nevada Test Site, Amargosa Valley, the Spring Mountains, Death Valley, Ash Meadows, Pahranagat Valley, and Oasis Valley. The preparation of a data base containing all of these data is near completion and will be submitted to DOE upon its completion. Data verification is in progress. In addition, many multivariate analyses were performed to characterize the trace element compositions in …
Resistive Transitions In Quench-Condensed Bi Films Near A Normal-Metal Ground Plane, Richard P. Barber Jr., Ben Kain
Resistive Transitions In Quench-Condensed Bi Films Near A Normal-Metal Ground Plane, Richard P. Barber Jr., Ben Kain
Physics
We report observations of the zero-field resistive transitions of superconducting quench-condensed Bi0.97Tl0.03 films both near electrically isolated normal-metal ground planes and on clean fire-polished glass. Transition temperatures, obtained by fitting the data with the two-dimensional Aslamazov-Larkin theory of fluctuation conductance, were found to be significantly enhanced for films deposited over ground planes versus those deposited onto insulating substrates. Conductivity enhancement due to superconducting fluctuations was found to be much less than expected for the thinnest samples. This suppression was coincident with broadened superconductor transitions that are consistent with nonuniform sample thickness. Sufficiently thick films showed reasonable agreement with both the …
Generalized Residual Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation Of Parameters And States, Charles D. Ormsby
Generalized Residual Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation Of Parameters And States, Charles D. Ormsby
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation develops a modification to the standard Multiple Model Adaptive Estimator (MMAE) which allows the use of a new "generalized residual" in the hypothesis conditional probability calculation. The generalized residual is a linear combination of traditional Kalman filter residuals and "post-fit" Kalman filter residuals which are calculated after measurement incorporation. This modified MMAE is termed a Generalized Residual Multiple Model Adaptive Estimator (GRMMAE). The dissertation provides a derivation of the hypothesis conditional probability formula which the GRMMAE uses to calculate probabilities that each elemental filter in the GRMMAE contains the correct parameter value. Through appropriate choice of a single …

A Population Pharmacokinetic Model With Time-Dependent Covariates Measured With Errors, Lang Lil, Xihong Lin, Mort B. Brown, Suneel Gupta, Kyung-Hoon Lee
The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
We propose a population pharmacokinetic (PK) model with time-dependent covariates measured with errors. This model is used to model S-oxybutynin's kinetics following an oral administration of Ditropan, and allows the distribution rate to depend on time-dependent covariates blood pressure and heart rate, which are measured with errors. We propose two two-step estimation methods: the second order two-step method with numerical solutions of differential equations (2orderND), and the second order two-step method with closed form approximate solutions of differential equations (2orderAD). The proposed methods are computationally easy and require fitting a linear mixed model at the first step and a nonlinear …

A Framework For Management Of Concurrent Xml Markup, Alex Dekhtyar, Ionut E. Iacob
Computer Science and Software Engineering
The problem of concurrent markup hierarchies in XML encodings of documents has attracted attention of a number of humanities researchers in recent years. The key problem with using concurrent hierarchies to encode documents is that markup in one hierarchy is not necessarily well-formed with respect to the markup in another hierarchy. Previously proposed solutions to this problem rely on the XML expertise of the editors and their ability to maintain correct DTDs for complex markup languages. In this paper, we approach the problem of maintenance of concurrent XML markup from the Computer Science perspective. We propose a framework that allows …

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center
As a result of foresight and planning that has established a logical data model (i.e., the Master Model), a set of standard reference tables and 17 migration software systems as the foundation of a disciplined Corporate Data Environment (CDE), USTRANSCOM now finds itself in the enviable position of being able to implement DoD’s vision of a Global Information Grid (GIG) with speed and confidence. The urgency with which DoD views the need to shift the burden of tedious data filtering and interpretation tasks from human operators to automated machine-based processes, is reflected in the CDE and provides the opportunity for …

Split Knowledge Level Modeling, Michael A. Zang, Jens G. Pohl
Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center
Traditional approaches to building intelligent information systems employ an object model to define a representational structure for the information of interest within the target domain of the system. At runtime, the model provides a constrained template for the creation of the individual object instances and relationships that together define the state of the system at a given point in time. The ontology also provides a vocabulary for expressing domain knowledge typically in the form of rules (declarative knowledge) or methods (procedural knowledge). Agents operating within the system utilize the encoded knowledge to progress the state of the system towards the …

Controllability And Local Accessibility—A Normal Form Approach, Wei Kang, Mingqing Xiao, Issa Amadou Tall

Given a system with an uncontrollable linearization at the origin, we study the controllability of the system at equilibria around the origin. If the uncontrollable mode is nonzero, we prove that the system always has other equilibria around the origin. We also prove that these equilibria are linearly controllable provided a coefficient in the normal form is nonzero. Thus, the system is qualitatively changed from being linearly uncontrollable to linearly controllable when the equilibrium point is moved from the origin to a different one. This is called a bifurcation of controllability. As an application of the bifurcation, systems with a …

Fluorine-rich prismatine, (square,Fe,Mg)(Mg,Al,Fe)(5)Al-4(Si,B,Al)(5)O-21(OH,F), with F/(OH+F) = 0.36-0.40 and hercynite are major constituents of a Fe-Al-B-rich lens in ultrahigh-temperature granulite-facies quartz-sillimanite-hypersthene-cordierite gneisses of the Eastern Ghats belt, Andhra Pradesh, India. Hemo-ilmenite. sapphirine, magnetite, biotite and sillimanite are subordinate. Lithium, Be and B are concentrated in prismatine (140 ppm Li, 170 ppm Be, and 2.8-3.0 wt.% B2O3). Another Fe-rich lens is dominantly magnetite, which encloses fine-grained zincian ferrohogbomite-2N2S, (Fe2+ Mg,Zn,Al)(6) (Al,Fe3+,Ti)(16)O-30(OH)(2), containing minor Ga2O3 (0.30-0.92 wt.%). Fe-Al-B-rich lenses with prismatine (or kornerupine) constitute a distinctive type of B-enrichment in granulite-facies rocks and have been reported from four other localities worldwide. A scenario …

Women have been receiving a greater proportion of the bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the geosciences over the last 10 years, reaching near 40% in 2000 (latest data available), while receiving only 28% of the Ph.D.s that year. Women are now only 20% of assistant professors at Ph.D.-granting institutions, a proportion that has not changed in the last four years. As part of a larger study to find what key barriers continue to prevent larger numbers of women geoscientists from becoming academics, data have been compiled from the National Science Board [NSB, 2002], and the American Geological Instititute's (AGI) Directory …

A Novel Behavior Observed In Humpback Whales On Wintering Grounds At Abrolhos Bank (Brazil), Maria Morete, Ana Freitas, Marcia Engel, Richard M. Pace Iii, Phillip Clapham
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
We describe a novel behavior, termed “tail-up,” observed in humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) on wintering grounds on Abrolhos Bank, Brazil. The behavior involves the whale positioned vertically in the water column with its tail in the air. Wirh the exception of calves, tail-up was observed in all social classes, and its frequency increased through the end of the season. Tail-ups were recorded in 144 (5.8%) of 2,465 groups of whales observed from a shore station, and in 297 (14.9%) of 1,996 groups observed from vessel surveys; biases in each method suggest that the true frequency lies between these …
Dirichlet Boundary Control Of Hyperbolic Equations In The Presence Of State Constraints, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Jean-Pierre Raymond
Dirichlet Boundary Control Of Hyperbolic Equations In The Presence Of State Constraints, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Jean-Pierre Raymond
Mathematics Research Reports
We study optimal control problems for hyperbolic equations (focusing on the multidimensional wave equation) with control functions in the Dirichlet boundary conditions under hard/pointwise control and state constraints. Imposing appropriate convexity assumptions on the cost integral functional, we establish the existence of optimal control and derive new necessary optimality conditions in the integral form of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle for hyperbolic state-constrained systems.

Evaluating the potential impacts of intensive silvicultural practices on water quality is critical for establishing the long-term sustainability of contemporary forest management practices. From 1979 to 1985, a study involving nine small (~2.5 ha) forested watersheds was conducted near Alto, Texas in the upper western Gulf-Coastal Plain to evaluate the impacts then-current silvicultural practices on water quality. In the years following the study, silvicultural Best Management Practices (BMPs) including Streamside Management Zones (SMZs) and other erosion control practices evolved and questions arose about the applicability of earlier results to current practices. In 1999, these same watersheds were reinstrumented to evaluate …

Plasma Density Gratings Induced By Intersecting Laser Pulses In Underdense Plasmas, Z.-M. Sheng, Jiandi Zhang, Donald Umstadter
Donald Umstadter Publications
Electron and ion density gratings induced by two intersecting ultrashort laser pulses at intensities of 1016 W/cm2 or lower are investigated. The ponderomotive force generated by the inhomogeneous intensity distribution in the intersecting region of the interfering pulses produces deep electron and ion density modulations at a wavelength less than a laser wavelength in vacuum. Dependence of the density modulation on the plasma densities, temperatures, and the ion mass, as well as the laser pulse parameters are studied analytically and by particle-in-cell simulations. It is found that the density peaks of such gratings can be a few times …
