Effective Field Theory Approach To String Gas Cosmology, Scott Watson, Thorsten Battefeld Mar 2004

Effective Field Theory Approach To String Gas Cosmology, Scott Watson, Thorsten Battefeld

Physics - All Scholarship

We derive the 4D low energy effective field theory for a closed string gas on a time dependent FRW background. We examine the solutions and find that although the Brandenberger-Vafa mechanism at late times no longer leads to radion stabilization, the radion rolls slowly enough that the scenario is still of interest. In particular, we find a simple example of the string inspired dark matter recently proposed by Gubser and Peebles.

An Exploration Of Cultural Factors Affecting Use Of Communities Of Practice, Peter L. Hinrichsen Mar 2004

An Exploration Of Cultural Factors Affecting Use Of Communities Of Practice, Peter L. Hinrichsen

Theses and Dissertations

On-line communities of practice are potentially powerful social learning networks that can improve organizational performance. Unfortunately, administrators of on-line communities of practice report that community members do not take full advantage of this potential. This study used Shaw and Tuggle's (2003) factors of knowledge management (KM) culture affecting organizational acceptance of a knowledge management initiative to explore this issue. It was hypothesized that respondents whose communities of practice possessed higher average community use per member would rate KM culture variables higher than respondents whose communities possessed a lower average community use. An analysis of survey data collected from Air Force …

A search for events containing isolated tau leptons and large missing transverse momentum, not originating from the tau decay, has been performed with the ZEUS detector at the electron-proton collider HERA, using 130 pb -1 of integrated luminosity. A search was made for isolated tracks coming from hadronic tau decays. Observables based on the internal jet structure were exploited to discriminate between tau decays and quark- or gluon-induced jets. Three tau candidates were found, while 0.40 -0.13+0.12 were expected from Standard Model processes, such as charged current deep inelastic scattering and single W ±-boson production. To search for heavy-particle decays, …

An Analysis Of Electromagnetic Interference (Emi) Of Ultra Wideband(Uwb) And Ieee 802.11a Wireless Local Area Network (Wlan) Employing Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (Ofdm), Juan Lopez Jr. Mar 2004

An Analysis Of Electromagnetic Interference (Emi) Of Ultra Wideband(Uwb) And Ieee 802.11a Wireless Local Area Network (Wlan) Employing Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (Ofdm), Juan Lopez Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Military communications require the rapid deployment of mobile, high-bandwidth systems. These systems must provide anytime, anywhere capabilities with minimal interference to existing military, private, and commercial communications. Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology is being advanced as the next generation radio technology and has the potential to revolutionize indoor wireless communications. The ability of UWB to mitigate multipath fading, provide high-throughput data rates (e.g., greater than 100 Mbps), provide excellent signal penetration (e.g., through walls), and low implementation costs makes it an ideal technology for a wide range of private and public sector applications. Preliminary UWB studies conducted by The Institute for …

Causal Inference In Hybrid Intervention Trials Involving Treatment Choice, Qi Long, Rod Little, Xihong Lin Mar 2004

Causal Inference In Hybrid Intervention Trials Involving Treatment Choice, Qi Long, Rod Little, Xihong Lin

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Randomized allocation of treatments is a cornerstone of experimental design, but has drawbacks when a limited set of individuals are willing to be randomized, or the act of randomization undermines the success of the treatment. Choice-based experimental designs allow a subset of the participants to choose their treatments. We discuss here causal inferences for experimental designs where some participants are randomly allocated to treatments and others receive their treatment preference. This paper was motivated by the “Women Take Pride” (WTP) study (Janevic et al., 2001), a doubly randomized preference trail (DRPT) to assess behavioral interventions for women with heart disease. …

Comparison Of A Conceptual Model And Objective Indicators Of Extratropical Transition In The Western North Pacific, Gregory D. Fox Mar 2004

Comparison Of A Conceptual Model And Objective Indicators Of Extratropical Transition In The Western North Pacific, Gregory D. Fox

Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this research is to provide guidance to forecasters from the Joint (Air Force/Navy) Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) in Pearl Harbor to use in differentiating between the stages of extratropical transition (ET) of tropical cyclones (TCs). Not only is ET relevant to the Department of Defense, since JTWC stops providing TC warnings once they have undergone ET, but it is also applicable to the meteorological community since there currently "is no commonly accepted definition of ET" (Jones et al 2003). This research compares the results of a conceptual model of ET using subjective satellite analysis with the …

Service Oriented Computing Imperatives In Ad Hoc Wireless Settings, Rohan Sen, Radu Handorean, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Christopher Gill Mar 2004

Service Oriented Computing Imperatives In Ad Hoc Wireless Settings, Rohan Sen, Radu Handorean, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Christopher Gill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Service oriented computing is a new paradigm that is gaining popularity in dis-tributed computing environments due to its emphasis on highly specialized, modular and platform-agnostic code facilitating interoperability of systems. It borrows concepts from more mature paradigms such as object-oriented and component computing. This results in a progression from object-oriented computing to component computing and finally to service oriented computing, a new paradigm for designing and delivering software. Just as an object encapsulates state and behavior at a fine level of granularity, a service offers similar encapsulation at a larger scale. This evolution raises the level of abstraction at which …

Error Models For Microarray Intensities, Wolfgang Huber, Anja Von Heydebreck, Martin Vingron Mar 2004

Error Models For Microarray Intensities, Wolfgang Huber, Anja Von Heydebreck, Martin Vingron

Bioconductor Project Working Papers

We derive the additive-multiplicative error model for microarray intensities, and describe two applications. For the detection of differentially expressed genes, we obtain a statistic whose variance is approximately independent of the mean intensity. For the post hoc calibration (normalization) of data with respect to experimental factors, we describe a method for parameter estimation.

A Bayesian Hierarchical Approach To Multirater Correlated Roc Analysis, Tim Johnson, Valen Johnson Mar 2004

A Bayesian Hierarchical Approach To Multirater Correlated Roc Analysis, Tim Johnson, Valen Johnson

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In a common ROC study design, several readers are asked to rate diagnostics of the same cases processed under different modalities. We describe a Bayesian hierarchical model that facilitates the analysis of this study design by explicitly modeling the three sources of variation inherent to it. In so doing, we achieve substantial reductions in the posterior uncertainty associated with estimates of the differences in areas under the estimated ROC curves and corresponding reductions in the mean squared error (MSE) of these estimates. Based on simulation studies, both the widths of confidence intervals and MSE of estimates of differences in the …

Identification Of Novel Small Molecule Inhibitors Of Core-Binding Factor Dimerization By Computational Screening Against Nmr Molecular Ensemble, Ryan H. Lilien, Mohini Sridharan, Bruce R. Donald Mar 2004

Identification Of Novel Small Molecule Inhibitors Of Core-Binding Factor Dimerization By Computational Screening Against Nmr Molecular Ensemble, Ryan H. Lilien, Mohini Sridharan, Bruce R. Donald

Computer Science Technical Reports

The long development process of novel pharmaceutical compounds begins with the identification of a lead inhibitor compound. Computational screening to identify those ligands, or small molecules, most likely to inhibit a target protein may benefit the pharmaceutical development process by reducing the time required to identify a lead compound. Typically, computational ligand screening utilizes high-resolution structural models of both the protein and ligand to fit or `dock' each member of a ligand database into the binding site of the protein. Ligands are then ranked by the number and quality of interactions formed in the predicted protein-ligand complex. It is currently …

Forecasting Advective Sea Fog With The Use Of Classification And Regression Tree Analyses For Kunsan Air Base, Danielle M. Lewis Mar 2004

Forecasting Advective Sea Fog With The Use Of Classification And Regression Tree Analyses For Kunsan Air Base, Danielle M. Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

Advective sea fog frequently plagues Kunsan Air Base (AB), Republic of Korea, in the spring and summer seasons. It is responsible for a variety of impacts on military operations, the greatest being to aviation. To date, there are no suitable methods developed for forecasting advective sea fog at Kunsan, primarily due to a lack of understanding of sea fog formation under various synoptic situations over the Yellow Sea. This work explored the feasibility of predicting sea fog development with a 24-hour forecast lead time. Before exploratory data analysis was performed, a geographical introduction to the region was provided along with …

Automating Security Protocol Analysis, Stephen W. Mancini Mar 2004

Automating Security Protocol Analysis, Stephen W. Mancini

Theses and Dissertations

When Roger Needham and Michael Schroeder first introduced a seemingly secure protocol 24, it took over 18 years to discover that even with the most secure encryption, the conversations using this protocol were still subject to penetration. To date, there is still no one protocol that is accepted for universal use. Because of this, analysis of the protocol outside the encryption is becoming more important. Recent work by Joshua Guttman and others 9 have identified several properties that good protocols often exhibit. Termed Authentication Tests, these properties have been very useful in examining protocols. The purpose of this research is …

Different Velocity Dependences Of Physical Conditions Of High- And Low-Ionization Lines In Broad-Line Regions, Stephanie A. Snedden, C. Martin Gaskell Mar 2004

Different Velocity Dependences Of Physical Conditions Of High- And Low-Ionization Lines In Broad-Line Regions, Stephanie A. Snedden, C. Martin Gaskell

C. Martin Gaskell Publications

We present results from a study of high- and low-ionization emission line ratios as a function of projected velocity for a sample of eight active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Our results are based on analysis of high signal-to-noise optical and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) UV spectra. Comparing the emission line ratios to those predicted by photoionization models indicates that the physical conditions responsible for the high-ionization emission lines are consistent with a wind, whereas those of the low-ionization lines are consistent with a virialized disk.

Optical Characterization And Modeling Of Compositionally Matched Indium Arsenide-Antimonide Bulk And Multiple Quantum Well Semiconductors, Scott C. Phillips Mar 2004

Optical Characterization And Modeling Of Compositionally Matched Indium Arsenide-Antimonide Bulk And Multiple Quantum Well Semiconductors, Scott C. Phillips

Theses and Dissertations

Indium arsenide-antimonide (InAsSb) semiconductors have been determined to emit in the 3-5 micrometer range, the window of interest for countermeasures against infrared electro-optical threats. This experiment set out to cross the bulk to quantum well characterization barrier by optically characterizing two sets of compositionally matched type I quantum well and bulk well material samples. Absorption measurements determined the band gap energy of the bulk samples and the first allowed subband transition for the quantum wells. By collecting absorption spectra at different temperatures, the trend of the energy transitions was described by fitting a Varshni equation to them. The expected result …

Verification Of Meteorological Data Reports From The Rq-4a Global Hawk Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Steven M. Callis Mar 2004

Verification Of Meteorological Data Reports From The Rq-4a Global Hawk Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Steven M. Callis

Theses and Dissertations

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have onboard sensors that continuously record weather data during their missions. This information is extremely valuable to both the meteorological and UAV communities with numerous potential benefits, which include improved weather forecast products and additional weather intelligence for military planners. The value of any dataset is directly related to its accuracy and this research determined the accuracy of weather data obtained from a particular UAV, the RQ-4A Global Hawk. This was accomplished through statistical analysis and comparisons with upper-air data and Atmospheric Slant Path Analysis Model (ASPAM) profiles of the atmosphere. Recommendations are provided for the …

Preparation Studies For Secondary Electron Emission Experiments On Superconducting Niobium, Anoop George, Robert A. Schill Jr. Mar 2004

Preparation Studies For Secondary Electron Emission Experiments On Superconducting Niobium, Anoop George, Robert A. Schill Jr.

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

Accelerator driven transmutation of waste is one complementary approach to deal with spent nuclear fuel as compared to permanent storage. High-energy protons generated by a particle accelerator collide with a heavy metal target producing neutrons. Long-lived radioactive isotopes interacting with the neutrons transmute into shorter-lived isotopes. To generate the high-energy protons efficiently, linear accelerators use multi-cell superconducting radio frequency (RF) cavities made of niobium. Superconducting niobium cavities have several advantages, including small power dissipation. The high electromagnetic fields present in these cavities may result in undesired field emission from surface imperfections with the probability of generating an avalanche of secondary …

We report results on ρ(770)0→π+π production at midrapidity in p+p and peripheral Au+Au collisions at √sNN=200  GeV. This is the first direct measurement of ρ(770)0→π+π in heavy-ion collisions. The measured ρ0 peak in the invariant mass distribution is shifted by ∼40  MeV/c2 in minimum bias p+p interactions and ∼70  MeV/c2 in peripheral Au+Au collisions. The ρ0 mass shift is dependent on transverse momentum and multiplicity. The modification of the ρ0 meson mass, width, and shape due to phase space and dynamical effects are discussed.

Critical Dynamics Of Superconductors In The Charged Regime, Courtney Lannert, Smitha Vishveshwara, Matthew P.A. Fisher Mar 2004

Critical Dynamics Of Superconductors In The Charged Regime, Courtney Lannert, Smitha Vishveshwara, Matthew P.A. Fisher

Physics: Faculty Publications

The charged regime of the superconductor-metal transition was analyzed by applying a finite temperature critical dynamics. A transverse gage field coupling was applied to the superconducting order parameter. A new dynamic universality class characeterized by a finite fixed point ratio between the transport coefficients associated with the order parameter and gage fields was found by assuming relaxational dynamics for both the order parameter and gage fields within a renormalization group scheme. It was found that various features of the dynamic universality class of the charged superconductor appeared in measurable quantities.

We have measured the circular polarization of light emitted from both atomic H and molecular H2 after bombarding H2 with longitudinally polarized electrons. For both atomic and molecular fluorescence near threshold we observe a circular polarization as great as 10% of the electron polarization. This represents the first direct observation of spin transfer in electron-molecule collisions.

Characterization Of Ground-Water Quality, Upper Republican Natural Resources District, Nebraska, 1998–2001, Jill D. Frankforter, Daniele T. Chafin

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Nearly all rural inhabitants and livestock in the Upper Republican Natural Resources District (URNRD) in southwestern Nebraska use ground water that can be affected by elevated nitrate concentrations. The development of ground-water irrigation in this area has increased the vulnerability of ground water to the introduction of fertilizers and other agricultural chemicals. In 1998, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Upper Republican Natural Resources District, began a study to characterize the quality of ground water in the Upper Republican Natural Resources District area with respect to physical properties and concentrations of major ions, coliform bacteria, nitrate, and pesticides, …

Verification Of The Mountain Wave Forecast Model's Stratospheric Turbulence Forecasts Using Sounding Data And Pilot Reports, Scott M. Miller Mar 2004

Verification Of The Mountain Wave Forecast Model's Stratospheric Turbulence Forecasts Using Sounding Data And Pilot Reports, Scott M. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Since stratospheric turbulence (Stratoturb) is becoming an increased concern to the Air Force, the threat of damage to aircraft must be addressed. Therefore, the Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA) requests an accurate Stratoturb forecast model. In 2002, The Mountain Wave Forecast Model (MWFM) was modified in order to develop a Stratoturb forecast tool. Turbulence forecasts generated twice daily by the MWFM for locations over East Asia over a period of thirty days were compared to output from the Rawindsonde Observation (RAOB) program to determine if the model agreed with the program output. Although the results were promising, verification by aircraft …

Developing A Forecast Tool For Cloud-To-Ground Lightning In The North Central And Northeastern United States, Manuel I. Folsom Jr. Mar 2004

Developing A Forecast Tool For Cloud-To-Ground Lightning In The North Central And Northeastern United States, Manuel I. Folsom Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning is a hazard to the Air Force for both air and ground operations Forecasting CG lightning is a necessary and extremely important requirement for Air Force meteorologists and forecasters. The 15th Operational Weather Squadron requested a forecast tool capable of predicting CG lightning within a 25 and 10 nautical mile radius of the 13 military locations in their area of responsibility. To fulfill their request, forecast decision tools were created using a Classification and Regression Tree (CART) data analysis program. Four decision trees were produced for each location using the period of record from March through September, …

Chemical Characterization Of Ambient Aerosol Collected During The Northeast Monsoon Season Over The Arabian Sea: Anions And Cations, Anne M. Johansen, Michael R. Hoffmann Mar 2004

Chemical Characterization Of Ambient Aerosol Collected During The Northeast Monsoon Season Over The Arabian Sea: Anions And Cations, Anne M. Johansen, Michael R. Hoffmann

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Ambient aerosol samples were collected over the Arabian Sea during the month of March 1997, aboard the German R/V Sonne, as part of the German JGOFS project (Joint Global Ocean Flux Study). This is the third study in a series of analogous measurements taken over the Arabian Sea during different seasons of the monsoon. Dichotomous high volume collector samples were analyzed for anions and cations upon return to the laboratory. Anthropogenic pollutant concentrations were larger during the first part of the cruise, when air masses originated over the Indian subcontinent. Total NSS‐SO42− concentrations amounted to 2.94 ± …

Expansion And Renovation Of The Darling Marine Center Library, Kevin Eckelbarger Mar 2004

Expansion And Renovation Of The Darling Marine Center Library, Kevin Eckelbarger

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

This award provides partial funding for expansion and modernization of the library at The Darling Marine Center. The library currently contains more marine-related holdings than any other library in Maine, and is an important resource for researchers and students interested in the biology of the Gulf of Maine and the Maine coast. Because of current space limitations, a third of the library's holdings are stored in other buildings and attic spaces. The library is not wheelchair accessible, has no significant study space, and provides only limited access to electronic databases. The proposed changes include: 1) construction of a 1,500 sq. …

The Amount And Economic Cost Of Feral Swine Damage To The Last Remnant Of A Basin Marsh System In Florida, Richard M. Engeman, Henry T. Smith, Robert Severson, Mary Ann Severson, Stephanie A. Shwiff, Bernice Constantin, Daniel Griffin

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Swine (Sus scrofa) have been introduced into many natural habitats throughout the world, and they have adversely affected the environment in most of those places. Basin marshes are unique, but dwindling ecosystems in Florida that are especially vulnerable to damage by feral swine. We estimated the amount of swine damage to the last remnant of a basin marsh system in Savannas Preserve State Park (SPSP), and to ecotones within the marsh. We also applied an economic valuation method for the swine damage that was based on the dollar amounts that wetland regulators have allowed permit applicants to spend …

Loss-Based Cross-Validated Deletion/Substitution/Addition Algorithms In Estimation, Sandra E. Sinisi, Mark J. Van Der Laan Mar 2004

Loss-Based Cross-Validated Deletion/Substitution/Addition Algorithms In Estimation, Sandra E. Sinisi, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In van der Laan and Dudoit (2003) we propose and theoretically study a unified loss function based statistical methodology, which provides a road map for estimation and performance assessment. Given a parameter of interest which can be described as the minimizer of the population mean of a loss function, the road map involves as important ingredients cross-validation for estimator selection and minimizing over subsets of basis functions the empirical risk of the subset-specific estimator of the parameter of interest, where the basis functions correspond to a parameterization of a specified subspace of the complete parameter space. In this article we …

Stream Bank Stability In Eastern Nebraska, Philip J. Soenksen, Mary J. Turner, Benjamin J. Dietsch, Andrew Simon Mar 2004

Stream Bank Stability In Eastern Nebraska, Philip J. Soenksen, Mary J. Turner, Benjamin J. Dietsch, Andrew Simon

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Dredged and straightened channels in eastern Nebraska have experienced degradation leading to channel widening by bank failure. Degradation has progressed headward and affected the drainage systems upstream from the modified reaches. This report describes a study that was undertaken to analyze bank stability at selected sites in eastern Nebraska and develop a simplified method for estimating the stability of banks at future study sites. Bank cross sections along straight reaches of channel and geotechnical data were collected at approximately 150 sites in 26 counties of eastern Nebraska. The sites were categorized into three groups based on mapped soil permeability. With …
