Converting Low-Level Mixed Waste Into Transuranic Waste For Geologic Disposal At Wipp: A Cost Analysis, Helen R. Neill, Robert H. Neill Mar 2004

Converting Low-Level Mixed Waste Into Transuranic Waste For Geologic Disposal At Wipp: A Cost Analysis, Helen R. Neill, Robert H. Neill

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications

The Department of Energy (DOE) has approximately 43,000 cubic meters of mixed-low-level waste (MLLW) with alpha emitting concentrations of 10 to 100 nanocuries per gram (nCi/g) generated from the nations defense programs requiring radioactive waste disposal [1]. DOE has decided to commingle MLLW containers with transuranic (TRU) waste containers in larger containers such that the average concentration in the larger container would qualify as TRU waste for deep geologic disposal at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). Since Congress has exempted the WIPP mixed TRU waste from the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) [2] requirement to treat the waste …

Lattices And Their Applications To Rational Elliptic Surfaces, Gretchen Rimmasch Mar 2004

Lattices And Their Applications To Rational Elliptic Surfaces, Gretchen Rimmasch

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses some of the invariants of rational elliptic surfaces, namely the Mordell-Weil Group, Mordell-Weil Lattice, and another lattice which will be called the Shioda Lattice. It will begin with a brief overview of rational elliptic surfaces, followed by a discussion of lattices, root systems and Dynkin diagrams. Known results of several authors will then be applied to determine the groups and lattices associated with a given rational elliptic surface, along with a discussion of the uses of these groups and lattices in classifying surfaces.

Determination Of Acetaminophen Residues In Whole Body Brown Treesnakes, Thomas M. Primus, Dennis J. Kohler, Carol A. Furcolow, Margaret J. Goodall, John J. Johnston, Peter J. Savarie Mar 2004

Determination Of Acetaminophen Residues In Whole Body Brown Treesnakes, Thomas M. Primus, Dennis J. Kohler, Carol A. Furcolow, Margaret J. Goodall, John J. Johnston, Peter J. Savarie

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Acetaminophen was extracted from brown treesnakes (Boiga irregularis) and analyzed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Acetaminophen was quantified by UV absorbance at 250 nm. Recoveries were determined by analyzing acetaminophen-fortified blank homogenized tissue. The mean recovery of acetaminophen in whole body brown treesnakes was 87.9% + 5.9% and 92.2% + 5.8% for the fortification levels of 20 and 2400mg/g, respectively. The method’s limit of detection (MLOD) with UV detection was 0.70mg/g.

Dust Storm Forecasting For Al Udeid Ab, Qatar: An Empirical Analysis, Kevin S. Bartlett Mar 2004

Dust Storm Forecasting For Al Udeid Ab, Qatar: An Empirical Analysis, Kevin S. Bartlett

Theses and Dissertations

Dust storms are extreme weather events that have strong winds laden with visibility reducing and operations limiting dust, The Central Command Air Forces (CENTAF) 28th Operational Weather Squadron (OWS) is ultimately responsible for forecasting weather in the vast, data denied region of Southwest Asia in support of daily military and humanitarian operations. As a result, the 28th OWS requests a simplified forecasting tool to help predict mesoscale dust events that affect coalition operations at Al Udeid AB, Qatar. This research satisfies the 28th OWS request through an extensive statistical analysis of observational data depicting seasonal dust events over the past …

A Statistically-Based Method For Predicting Fog And Stratus Dissipation, Louis L. Lussier Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The method is a success in producing forecasts for ceiling and visibility criteria that had never previously been examined. It is suggested that the 15 OWS incorporate this methodology into their operational forecasting routine. Ceiling forecasts at Dover AFB and McGuire AFB show improvements over conditional climatology ranging from 1-51% with an average improvement of 19.2% when verified against an independent data set. McGuire AFB visibility forecasts show an average improvement over conditional climatology of 3%. These findings are of particular importance to the Air Force in general and specifically to the 15th Operational Weather Squadron (15 OWS) who produces …

Feasibility Of Using Classification Analyses To Determine Tropical Cyclone Rapid Intensification, Jonathan W. Leffler Mar 2004

Feasibility Of Using Classification Analyses To Determine Tropical Cyclone Rapid Intensification, Jonathan W. Leffler

Theses and Dissertations

Tropical cyclone intensity techniques developed by Dvorak have thus far been regarded by tropical meteorologists as the best identification and forecast schemes available using satellite imagery. However, in recent years, several ideologies have arisen which discuss alternative means of determining typhoon rapid intensification or weakening in the Pacific. These theories include examining channel outflow patterns, potential vorticity superposition and anomalies, tropical upper tropospheric trough interactions, environmental influences, and upper tropospheric flow transitions. It is now possible to data mine these atmospheric parameters thought partly responsible for typhoon rapid intensification and weakening to validate their usefulness in the forecast process. Using …

Shallow Water Modeling Of Antarctic Bottom Water Crossing The Equator, Paul F. Choboter, Gordon E. Swaters Mar 2004

Shallow Water Modeling Of Antarctic Bottom Water Crossing The Equator, Paul F. Choboter, Gordon E. Swaters

Mathematics

The dynamics of abyssal equator-crossing flows are examined by studying simplified models of the flow in the equatorial region in the context of reduced-gravity shallow water theory. A simple “frictional geostrophic” model for one-layer cross-equatorial flow is described, in which geostrophy is replaced at the equator by frictional flow down the pressure gradient. This model is compared via numerical simulations to the one-layer reduced-gravity shallow water model for flow over realistic equatorial Atlantic Ocean bottom topography. It is argued that nonlinear advection is important at key locations where it permits the current to flow against a pressure gradient, a mechanism …

Energy levels and the corresponding transition probabilities for allowed and forbidden transitions among the levels of the ground configuration and first 23 excited configurations of fluorine-like Fe XVIII have been calculated using the multiconfigurational Dirac-Fock GRASP code. A total of 379 lowest bound levels of Fe XVIII is presented, and the energy levels are identified in spectroscopic notations. Transition probabilities, oscillator strengths and line strengths for electric dipole (E1), electric quadrupole (E2) and magnetic dipole (M1) transitions among these 379 levels are also presented. The calculated energy levels and transition probabilities are compared with experimental data.

Feasibility Of Mapping Benthic Biotopes In The Hudson River, Nicole P. Maher, Robert M. Cerrato Mar 2004

Feasibility Of Mapping Benthic Biotopes In The Hudson River, Nicole P. Maher, Robert M. Cerrato

School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

Successful management of aquatic resources requires comprehensive maps that identify the spatial distribution and extent of potentially vulnerable habitats and their resident biota (e.g., essential fish habitat). We illustrate a technique that describes submerged landscapes not only in terms of geophysical properties, but also in terms of the resident biotic communities. Biological community distribution was highly correlated with the geophysical provinces initially identified by Bell et al. (2000). However, fewer groups of stations (created mainly by combining provinces) explained almost as much of the variation in benthic community structure and was a better description of the major biotopes in this …

Fisheries management papers

The overall objective of the proposed FHPA and the associated Plan of Management is to conserve and protect a portion of the near-shore reef ecosystem in the vicinity of the Blue Holes, and to manage activities within the area, to promote the observation and protection of fish living within the area. Strong community commitment has already been demonstrated, and this is crucial in the implementation of the proposed management plan

1d Energy Transport In A Strongly Scattering Laboratory Model, Kasper Van Wijk, Matt M. Haney, John A. Scales Mar 2004

1d Energy Transport In A Strongly Scattering Laboratory Model, Kasper Van Wijk, Matt M. Haney, John A. Scales

Matthew M. Haney

Radiative transfer (RT) theory is often invoked to describe energy propagation in strongly scattering media. Fitting RT to measured wave field intensities is rather different at late times, when the transport is diffusive, than at intermediate times (around one extinction mean free time), when ballistic and diffusive behavior coexist. While there are many examples of late-time RT fits, we describe ultrasonic multiple scattering measurements with RT over the entire range of times—from ballistic to diffusive. In addition to allowing us to retrieve the scattering and absorption mean free paths independently, our results also support theoretical predictions in 1D that suggest …

Modern Glacier Retreat On Kilimanjaro As Evidence Of Climate Change: Observations And Facts, Georg Kaser, Douglas R. Hardy, Thomas Molg, Raymond S. Bradley, Tharsis M. Hyera Mar 2004

Modern Glacier Retreat On Kilimanjaro As Evidence Of Climate Change: Observations And Facts, Georg Kaser, Douglas R. Hardy, Thomas Molg, Raymond S. Bradley, Tharsis M. Hyera

Raymond S Bradley

In recent years, Kilimanjaro and its vanishing glaciers have become an ‘icon’ of global warming, attracting broad interest. In this paper, a synopsis of (a) field observations made by the authors and (b) climatic data as reported in the literature (proxy and long-term instrumental data) is presented to develop a new concept for investigating the retreat of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers, based on the physical understanding of glacier–climate interactions. The concept considers the peculiarities of the mountain and implies that climatological processes other than air temperature control the ice recession in a direct manner. A drastic drop in atmospheric moisture at the …

Corollaries On The Fixpoint Completion: Studying The Stable Semantics By Means Of The Clark Completion, Pascal Hitzler Mar 2004

Corollaries On The Fixpoint Completion: Studying The Stable Semantics By Means Of The Clark Completion, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The fixpoint completion fix (P) of a normal logic program P is a program transformation such that the stable models of P are exactly the models of the Clark completion of fix (P). This is well-known and was studied by Dung and Kanchanasut [15]. The correspondence, however, goes much further: The Gelfond-Lifschitz operator of P coincides with the immediate consequence operator of fix (P), as shown by Wendt [51], and even carries over to standard operators used for characterizing the well-founded and the Kripke-Kleene semantics. We will apply this knowledge to the study of …

A Meeting Detector And Its Applications, Jue Wang, Guanling Chen, David Kotz Mar 2004

A Meeting Detector And Its Applications, Jue Wang, Guanling Chen, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

In this paper we present a context-sensing component that recognizes meetings in a typical office environment. Our prototype detects the meeting start and end by combining outputs from pressure and motion sensors installed on the chairs. We developed a telephone controller application that transfers incoming calls to voice-mail when the user is in a meeting. Our experiments show that it is feasible to detect high-level context changes with ``good enough'' accuracy, using low-cost, off-the-shelf hardware, and simple algorithms without complex training. We also note the need for better metrics to measure context detection performance, other than just accuracy. We propose …

Dependency Management In Distributed Settings, Guanling Chen, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

Ubiquitous-computing environments are heterogeneous and volatile in nature. Systems that support ubicomp applications must be self-managed, to reduce human intervention. In this paper, we present a general service that helps distributed software components to manage their dependencies. Our service proactively monitors the liveness of components and recovers them according to supplied policies. Our service also tracks the state of components, on behalf of their dependents, and may automatically select components for the dependent to use based on evaluations of customized functions. We believe that our approach is flexible and abstracts away many of the complexities encountered in ubicomp environments. In …

New Magnetic Materials Obtained By Ion-Exchange Reactions From Non-Magnetic Layered Perovskites, H Kageyama, L Viciu, Gabriel Caruntu, Y Ueda, John B. Wiley

Chemistry Faculty Publications

New layered magnetic materials, (MCl)Ca2Ta3O10 (M = Cu, Fe), have been prepared by ion-exchange reactions of non-magnetic perovskite derivatives, ACa2Ta3O10 (A = Rb, Li), in corresponding anhydrous molten salts. Powder x-ray diffraction patterns of the products are successfully indexed assuming tetragonal symmetry with cell dimensions a = 3.829 Å and c = 15.533 Å for Cu, and a = 3.822 Å and c = 15.672 Å for Fe. Being separated by the Ca2Ta3O10 triple-layer perovskite slabs, the transition-metal chloride (MCl) network provides a two-dimensional magnetic lattice. Magnetic susceptibility measurements …

Searching For Planets In The Hyades. Iii. The Quest For Short-Period Planets, Diane B. Paulson, Steven H. Saar, William D. Cochran, Gregory W. Henry

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have been using the Keck I High Resolution Spectrograph to search for planetary companions in the Hyades cluster. We selected four stars from this sample that showed significant radial velocity variability on short timescales to search for short-period planetary companions. The radial velocities of these four stars were monitored regularly with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope for approximately 2 months, while sparse data were also taken over ∼4 months: we also obtained near-simultaneous photometric observations with one of the automatic photoelectric telescopes at Fairborn Observatory. For three of the stars, we detect photometric variability with the same period present in the …

Hd 207651: A Triple System With Δ Scuti And Ellipsoidal Variations But No Γ Doradus Pulsations, Gregory W. Henry, Francis C. Fekel, Stephen M. Henry

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We examine HD 207651 as a possible example of a star exhibiting both γ Doradus and δ Scuti type pulsations. We find photometric periods of 0.06479 and 0.06337 days with peak-to-peak amplitudes in Johnson B of 21 and 13 mmag, respectively, clearly indicating δ Scuti pulsations. Additional light variation with a period of 0.73540 days and an even larger amplitude of 31 mmag is within the range of γ Doradus pulsation periods but results instead from the ellipticity effect. HD 207651 has a composite spectrum with a weak, narrow absorption line superposed near the center of each broad metal line. …

Changes In Sulfur Concentration And Sulfur Isotopic Composition Within Authigenic Sulfide Minerals From Sediments Of Miocene Age To The Present, Odp Site 995, Blake Ridge, Offshore Southeastern United States, Kathryn G. Takacs, Walter S. Borowski

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The Blake Ridge area (offshore southeastern United States) consists of deep-water continental margin sediments overlying deposits of methane gas hydrate. Authigenic sulfide minerals (elemental sulfur, S˚; iron monosulfides, ~FeS; and pyrite, FeS2) are actively deposited in these sediments due to sulfate reduction and focused anaerobic methane oxidation (AMO) at the sulfate-methane interface (SMI). Sulfide minerals at the present SMI are enriched in 34S relative to those produced by sulfate reduction of organic matter higher in the sulfate reduction zone. 34S enrichments preserved in the sediment column may identify relatively high amounts of AMO and thus record …

Sharp Results Concerning The Expression Of Functions As Sums Of Finite Differences, R. Nillsen, S. Okada

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

A square integrable function on the real line can be written as a finite sum of differences of order s if and only if the Fourier transform of the function vanishes at the origin at a rate comparable with |x|^{-s}. This enables us to see that the space of all such functions becomes a Hilbert space D^s(R) and that this space is the range of the derivative of order s on the Sobolev space of order s. It was proved by the author (Journal of Functional Analysis 110 (1992), 73-95) that each function in D^s(R) is a sum of 2s+1 …
