Reversible Modified Reconstructability Analysis Of Boolean Circuits And Its Quantum Computation, Anas Al-Rabadi, Martin Zwick Jan 2004

Reversible Modified Reconstructability Analysis Of Boolean Circuits And Its Quantum Computation, Anas Al-Rabadi, Martin Zwick

Systems Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Modified Reconstructability Analysis (MRA) can be realized reversibly by utilizing Boolean reversible (3,3) logic gates that are universal in two arguments. The quantum computation of the reversible MRA circuits is also introduced. The reversible MRA transformations are given a quantum form by using the normal matrix representation of such gates. The MRA-based quantum decomposition may play an important role in the synthesis of logic structures using future technologies that consume less power and occupy less space.

Building Successful On-Line Learning Communities Across International Boundaries: A Case Study, Pat Jefferies, Frances Grodzinsky, Joe Griffin Jan 2004

Building Successful On-Line Learning Communities Across International Boundaries: A Case Study, Pat Jefferies, Frances Grodzinsky, Joe Griffin

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

The development of on-line learning communities across international boundaries is now a viable proposition using available asynchronous technologies. As has been reported in previous papers (Grodzinsky, Griffin & Jefferies, 2002; Griffin, Grodzinsky & Jefferies, 2002) such use has proved to be extremely valuable for supporting the teaching of computing and ethics. For example, not only does asynchronous computer conferencing offer new opportunities for students to gain valuable first-hand experience in using such technology to communicate with peers in other countries but it also facilitates them gaining a more direct appreciation of the cultural, legal and ethical differences that abound. However, …

Ethical Reflections On Cyberstalking, Frances Grodzinsky, Herman T. Tavani Jan 2004

Ethical Reflections On Cyberstalking, Frances Grodzinsky, Herman T. Tavani

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

This essay examines some ethical aspects of stalking behavior in cyberspace. We have argued elsewhere that recent online stalking incidents raise a wide range of ethical concerns, including issues affecting gender (Grodzinsky and Tavani, 2001), personal privacy (Tavani and Grodzinsky, 2002), and physical vs. virtual harm (Grodzinsky and Tavani, 2002). The primary axis of discussion in this essay has to do with implications that cyberstalking has for our notion of moral responsibility, both at the collective (or group) and individual levels. For example, do collectivities and organizations such as Internet service providers (ISPs) have any moral obligations to cyberstalking victims, …

Advances And Applications Of Dezert-Smarandache Theory (Dsmt), Vol. 1, Florentin Smarandache, Jean Dezert Jan 2004

Advances And Applications Of Dezert-Smarandache Theory (Dsmt), Vol. 1, Florentin Smarandache, Jean Dezert

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT) of plausible and paradoxical reasoning is a natural extension of the classical Dempster-Shafer Theory (DST) but includes fundamental differences with the DST. DSmT allows to formally combine any types of independent sources of information represented in term of belief functions, but is mainly focused on the fusion of uncertain, highly conflicting and imprecise quantitative or qualitative sources of evidence. DSmT is able to solve complex, static or dynamic fusion problems beyond the limits of the DST framework, especially when conflicts between sources become large and when the refinement of the frame of the problem under consideration …

Analysis Of Ligo Data For Gravitational Waves From Binary Neutron Stars, B. P. Abbott, R. Abbott, Wm. R. Johnston, Joseph D. Romano, V. Schmidt

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

We report on a search for gravitational waves from coalescing compact binary systems in the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. The analysis uses data taken by two of the three LIGO interferometers during the first LIGO science run and illustrates a method of setting upper limits on inspiral event rates using interferometer data. The analysis pipeline is described with particular attention to data selection and coincidence between the two interferometers. We establish an observational upper limit of R

A Test Of Bell’S Inequality For The Undergraduate Laboratory, Burton A. Betchart Jan 2004

A Test Of Bell’S Inequality For The Undergraduate Laboratory, Burton A. Betchart

Honors Papers

The thesis documents the work done over the year to initiate an undergraduate Advanced Laboratory experiment which tests Bell’s inequality. It provides reference theory for the experiment, including explanations of Bell inequalities, basics of nonlinear optics, type-I downconversion and entanglement, and polarization states of the entangled photons. A main result is the equipment and design proposal for the experiment, which will cost a total $19600, led in price by the $9000 of a four photodetector array and followed by the $5000 of a 405nm pump laser. Entangled photons are produced by pumping BBO in a two-crystal geometry. Although most of …

Probing The Interstellar Medium On Au Size Scales Using Pulsar Scintillation, Alexander S. Hill Jan 2004

Probing The Interstellar Medium On Au Size Scales Using Pulsar Scintillation, Alexander S. Hill

Honors Papers

We have used pulsar scintillation observations to probe the ionized component of the interstellar medium on AU size scales. Previous work had shown that the presence of scintillation arcs in pulsar secondary spectra requires that the scattering along the line of sight to the pulsar is dominated by a thin screen of scattering material. An isotropic image gives rise to a sharply delineated arc, while an anisotropic image with refractive "hot spots" elongated along the pulsar velocity vector gives rise to detailed substructure and arclets in the secondary spectrum. Twenty-five years of archival scintillation data from the Arecibo Observatory show …

Blowup And Dissipation In A Critical-Case Unstable Thin Film Equation, Thomas P. Witelski, Andrew J. Bernoff, Andrea L. Bertozzi Jan 2004

Blowup And Dissipation In A Critical-Case Unstable Thin Film Equation, Thomas P. Witelski, Andrew J. Bernoff, Andrea L. Bertozzi

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We study the dynamics of dissipation and blow-up in a critical-case unstable thin film equation. The governing equation is a nonlinear fourth-order degenerate parabolic PDE derived from a generalized model for lubrication flows of thin viscous fluid layers on solid surfaces. There is a critical mass for blow-up and a rich set of dynamics including families of similarity solutions for finite-time blow-up and infinite-time spreading. The structure and stability of the steady-states and the compactly-supported similarity solutions is studied.

Examples Of Cayley 4-Manifolds, Weiqing Gu, Christopher Pries '03 Jan 2004

Examples Of Cayley 4-Manifolds, Weiqing Gu, Christopher Pries '03

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We determine several families of so-called Cayley 4-dimensional manifolds in the real Euclidean 8-space. Such manifolds are of interest because Cayley 4-manifolds are supersymmetric cycles that are candidates for representations of fundamental particles in String Theory. Moreover, some of the examples of Cayley manifolds discovered in this paper may be modified to construct explicit examples in our current search for new holomorphic invariants for Calabi-Yau 4-folds and for the further development of mirror symmetry.

We apply the classic results of Harvey and Lawson to find Cayley manifolds which are graphs of functions from the set of quaternions to itself. We …

Essential P-Spaces: A Generalization Of Door Spaces, Emad Abu Osba, Melvin Henriksen Jan 2004

Essential P-Spaces: A Generalization Of Door Spaces, Emad Abu Osba, Melvin Henriksen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

An element f of a commutative ring A with identity element is called a von Neumann regular element if there is a g in A such that f2g=f. A point p of a (Tychonoff) space X is called a P-point if each f in the ring C(X) of continuous real-valued functions is constant on a neighborhood of p. It is well-known that the ring C(X) is von Neumann regular ring iff each of its elements is a von Neumann regular element; in which case X is called a P-space. If all but at most one point of X …

Small Zeros Of Quadratic Forms With Linear Conditions, Lenny Fukshansky Jan 2004

Small Zeros Of Quadratic Forms With Linear Conditions, Lenny Fukshansky

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Given a quadratic form and M linear forms in N + 1 variables with coefficients in a number field K, suppose that there exists a point in KN+1 at which the quadratic form vanishes and all the linear forms do not. Then we show that there exists a point like this of relatively small height. This generalizes a result of D.W. Masser.

Palindrome-Polynomials With Roots On The Unit Circle, John Konvalina, Valentin Matache Jan 2004

Palindrome-Polynomials With Roots On The Unit Circle, John Konvalina, Valentin Matache

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Given a polynomial f(x) of degree n, let fr(x) denote its reciprocal, i.e., fr(x) = xnf(1=x). If a polynomial is equal to its reciprocal, we call it a palindrome since the coefficients are the same when read backwards or forwards. In this mathematical note we show that palindromes whose coefficients satisfy a certain magnitude-condition must have a root on the unit circle...

Geometric And Kinematic Evolution Of The Bessemer Transverse Zone, Alabama Alleghanian Thrust Belt, Margaret Colette Brewer Jan 2004

Geometric And Kinematic Evolution Of The Bessemer Transverse Zone, Alabama Alleghanian Thrust Belt, Margaret Colette Brewer

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Transverse zones are important syn-kinematic components of thrust belt development. Various scales of data were utilized to develop three-dimensional geometric and kinematic models for the Bessemer transverse zone (BTZ) of the Alabama Alleghanian thrust belt.

Regional analysis of the BTZ began with the examination of geologic maps (1:250,000, 1:48,000, and 1:24,000 scales), seismic reflection profiles, well data, and previous stratigraphic research. All Paleozoic-age stratigraphic contacts, major thrust faults and associated folds, and various unnamed minor structures were compiled to create two strike-perpendicular, and five-strike parallel, cross sections transecting the extent of the BTZ at a scale of 1:100,000. The balanced …
