On Certain Sets Of Matrices: Euclidean Squared Distance Matrices, Ray-Nonsingular Matrices And Matrices Generated By Reflections, Thomas W. Milligan Jan 2004

On Certain Sets Of Matrices: Euclidean Squared Distance Matrices, Ray-Nonsingular Matrices And Matrices Generated By Reflections, Thomas W. Milligan

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In this dissertation, we study three different sets of matrices. First, we consider Euclidean distance squared matrices. Given n points in Euclidean space, we construct an n x n Euclidean squared distance matrix by assigning to each entry the square of the pairwise interpoint Euclidean distance. The study of distance matrices is useful in computational chemistry and structural molecular biology. The purpose of the first part of the thesis is to better understand this set of matrices and its different characterizations so that a number of open problems might be answered and known results improved. We look at geometrical properties …

Measurement Of The Branching Fraction For Neutral Kaon(Long) Decaying To Muon-Electron-Positron, Andrew J. Norman Jan 2004

Measurement Of The Branching Fraction For Neutral Kaon(Long) Decaying To Muon-Electron-Positron, Andrew J. Norman

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation describes the measurement of the decay of the long lived neutral kaon into two muons and two electrons. The measurement was performed using the data taken during experiment E871 which was performed on the B5 beamline at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) of the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The branching ratio B( K0L → mu+mu-e +e-) is sensitive to the absorptive portion of the long distance amplitude for decays of the form K0L → ℓ+ℓ- and can be used to properly extract the short distance weak interaction amplitudes from the dileptonic events.;Measurement of K0L → mu+mu-e +e- additionally …

Dynamic Adaptation To Cpu And Memory Load In Scientific Applications, Richard Tran Mills Jan 2004

Dynamic Adaptation To Cpu And Memory Load In Scientific Applications, Richard Tran Mills

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

As commodity computers and networking technologies have become faster and more affordable, fairly capable machines have become nearly ubiquitous while the effective "distance" between them has decreased as network connectivity and capacity has multiplied. There is considerable interest in developing means to readily access such vast amounts of computing power to solve scientific problems, but the complexity of these modern computing environments pose problems for conventional computer codes designed to run on a static, homogeneous set of resources. One source of problems is the heterogeneity that is naturally present in these settings. More problematic is the competition that arises between …

Physical, Chemical, And Mechanical Properties Of Bamboo And Its Utilization Potential For Fiberboard Manufacturing, Xiaobo Li

LSU Master's Theses

This study investigated the chemical, physical, and mechanical properties of the bamboo species Phyllostachys pubescens and its utilization potential to manufacture medium density fiberboard (MDF). The result showed holocellulose and alpha-cellulose content increased from the base to the top portion. There was no significant variation in Klason lignin content or ash content from the base to the top portion of the bamboo. The outer layer had the highest holocellulose, alpha cellulose, and Klason lignin contents and the lowest extractive and ash contents. The epidermis had the highest extractive and ash contents and the lowest holocellulose and alpha-cellulose content. Specific gravity …

Moments Equalities For Nonnegative Integer-Valued Random Variables, Mohamed I. Riffi Jan 2004

Moments Equalities For Nonnegative Integer-Valued Random Variables, Mohamed I. Riffi

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We present and prove two theorems about equalities for the nth moment of nonnegative integer-valued random variables. These equalities generalize the well known equality for the first moment of a nonnegative integer-valued random variable X in terms of its cumulative distribution function, or in terms of its tail distribution.

On The Power Subgroups Of The Extended Modular Group \Gamma, Recep Şahi̇n, Sebahatti̇n İki̇kardeş, Özden Koruoğlu

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper we describe the group structure of power subgroups \Gamma^m of the extended modular group \Gamma and the quotients to them. Then we give some relations between the power subgroups \Gamma^m, the commutator subgroups \Gamma^{\prime} and \Gamma^{\prime \prime} and also the information of interest about free normal subgroups of the extended modular group \Gamma.

On Near-Rings With Two-Sided \Alpha-Derivations, Nurcan Argaç Jan 2004

On Near-Rings With Two-Sided \Alpha-Derivations, Nurcan Argaç

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we introduce the notion of two-sided \alpha-derivation of a near-ring and give some generalizations of [1]. Let N be a near ring. An additive mapping f: N\rightarrow N is called an { \it (\alpha, \beta)-derivation } if there exist functions \alpha,\beta : N\rightarrow N such that f(xy)=f(x)\alpha(y)+\beta (x)f(y) for all x,y\in N. An additive mapping d:N\rightarrow N is called a two-sided \alpha-derivation if d is an (\alpha,1)-derivation as well as a (1,\alpha)-derivation. The purpose of this paper is to prove the following two assertions: (i) Let N be a semiprime near-ring, I be a subset of N …

Coisotropic Submanifolds Of A Semi-Riemannian Manifold, Erol Kiliç, Bayram Şahi̇n, H. B. Karadağ, R. Güneş

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we study coisotropic submanifolds of a semi-Riemannian manifold. We investigate the integrability condition of the screen distribution and give a necessary and sufficient condition on Ricci tensor of a coisotropic submanifold to be symmetric. Finally, we present some new theorems and results about totally umbilical coisotropic submanifolds of a semi-Riemannian manifold

On Simultaneous Approximation By A Linear Combination Of A New Sequence Of Linear Positive Operators, P. N. Agrawal, Ali J. Mohammad Jan 2004

On Simultaneous Approximation By A Linear Combination Of A New Sequence Of Linear Positive Operators, P. N. Agrawal, Ali J. Mohammad

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In [1] we introduced a new sequence of linear positive operators M_{n} to approximate unbounded continuous functions of exponential growth on [0,\infty). As this sequence is saturated with O(n^{-1}), to accelerate the rate of convergence we applied the technique of linear combination introduced by May [3] and Rathore et al. [4] to these operators. The object of the present paper is to study the phenomena of simultaneous approximation (approximation of derivatives of functions by the corresponding order derivatives of operators) by the linear combination M_{n} ( . , k, x) of M_{n}. First, we establish a Voronovskaja-type asymptotic formula and …

On Local Hörmander-Beurling Spaces, Jairo Villegas Jan 2004

On Local Hörmander-Beurling Spaces, Jairo Villegas

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper we aim to extend a result of Hörmander's, that \mathcal{B}_{p,k}^{loc}(\Omega)\subset\mathcal{C}^m(\Omega) if \frac{(1+\left \cdot\right )^m}{k}\in L_{p^\prime}, to the setting of vector valued local Hörmander-Beurling spaces, as well as to show that the space \bigcap_{j=1}^\infty\mathcal{B}_{p_j,k_j}^{loc} (\Omega, E) (1\leq p_j\leq\infty, k_j=e^{j\omega}, j=1,2,\dots) is topologically isomorphic to \mathcal{E}_\omega(\Omega, E ). Moreover, it is well known that the union of Sobolev spaces \mathcal{H}_{s}^{loc}(\Omega) (=\mathcal{B}_{2,(1+ \cdot ^2)^{s/2}}^{loc}(\Omega)) coincides with the space \mathcal{D}^{\prime\,F}(\Omega) of finite order distributions on \Omega. We show that this is also verified in the context of vector valued Beurling ultradistributions.

A Nonlinear Random Coefficients Model For Degradation Testing, Suk Joo Bae, Paul H. Kvam Jan 2004

A Nonlinear Random Coefficients Model For Degradation Testing, Suk Joo Bae, Paul H. Kvam

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

As an alternative to traditional life testing, degradation tests can be effective in assessing product reliability when measurements of degradation leading to failure can be observed. This article presents a degradation model for highly reliable light displays, such as plasma display panels and vacuum fluorescent displays (VFDs). Standard degradation models fail to capture the burn-in characteristics of VFDs, when emitted light actually increases up to a certain point in time before it decreases (or degrades) continuously. Random coefficients are used to model this phenomenon in a nonlinear way, which allows for a nonmonotonic degradation path. In many situations, the relative …

Tree-Like Continua And 2-To-1 Maps, Jo Heath, Van C. Nall Jan 2004

Tree-Like Continua And 2-To-1 Maps, Jo Heath, Van C. Nall

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

It is not known if there is a 2-to-1 map from a continuum onto a tree-like continuum. In fact, it is not known if there is a 2-to-1 map onto a hereditarily decomposable tree-like continuum. We show that the domain of such a map would have to contain an indecomposable continuum.

Publications

We present photometry and spectroscopy of the afterglow of GRB 030323. VLT spectra of the afterglow show damped Lyα(DLA) absorption and low- and high-ionization lines at a redshift z =3.3718 ±0.0005. The inferred neutral hy-drogen column density, log N(H i) =21.90±0.07, is larger than any (GRB- or QSO-) DLA H  column density inferred directly from Lyαin absorption. From the afterglow photometry, we derive a conservative upper limit to the host-galaxy extinction: AV <0.5 mag. The iron abundance is [Fe/H] =−1.47 ±0.11, while the metallicity of the gas as measured from sulphur is [S/H] =−1.26 ±0.20. We derive an upper limit on the H2 molecular fraction of 2N(H2)/(2N(H2) +N(H i)) <∼10−6.In the Lyαtrough, a Lyαemission line is detected, which corresponds to a star-formation rate (not corrected for dust extinction) of roughly 1 Myr−1. All these results are consistent with the host galaxy of GRB 030323 consisting of a low metallicity gas with a low dust content. We detect fine-structure lines of silicon, Si*, which have never been clearly detected in QSO-DLAs; this suggests that these lines are produced in the vicinity of the GRB explosion site. Under the assumption that these fine-structure levels are populated by particle collisions, we estimate the H  volume density to be nH i =102−104 cm−3.HST/ACS imaging 4 months after the burst shows an extended AB(F606W) =28.0 ±0.3 mag object at a distance of 0.14 (1 kpc) from the early afterglow location, which presumably is the host galaxy of GRB 030323.

Order-Parameter Symmetry And Mode-Coupling Effects At Dirty Superconducting Quantum Phase Transitions, Rastko Sknepnek, Thomas Vojta, Rajesh Narayanan Jan 2004

Order-Parameter Symmetry And Mode-Coupling Effects At Dirty Superconducting Quantum Phase Transitions, Rastko Sknepnek, Thomas Vojta, Rajesh Narayanan

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We derive an order-parameter field theory for a quantum phase transition between a disordered metal and an exotic (non- s -wave) superconductor. Mode coupling effects between the order parameter and other fermionic soft modes lead to an effective long-range interaction between the anomalous density fluctuations which is reflected in singularities in the free energy functional. However, this long-range interaction is not strong enough to suppress disorder fluctuations. The asymptotic critical region is characterized by run-away flow to large disorder. For weak coupling, this asymptotic region is very narrow. It is preempted by a wide crossover regime with mean-field critical behavior …
