Sinbad Automation Of Scientific Process: From Hidden Factor Analysis To Theory Synthesis, Olcay Kursun Jan 2004

Sinbad Automation Of Scientific Process: From Hidden Factor Analysis To Theory Synthesis, Olcay Kursun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Modern science is turning to progressively more complex and data-rich subjects, which challenges the existing methods of data analysis and interpretation. Consequently, there is a pressing need for development of ever more powerful methods of extracting order from complex data and for automation of all steps of the scientific process. Virtual Scientist is a set of computational procedures that automate the method of inductive inference to derive a theory from observational data dominated by nonlinear regularities. The procedures utilize SINBAD – a novel computational method of nonlinear factor analysis that is based on the principle of maximization of mutual information …

Depth From Defocused Motion, Zarina Myles Jan 2004

Depth From Defocused Motion, Zarina Myles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Motion in depth and/or zooming causes defocus blur. This work presents a solution to the problem of using defocus blur and optical flow information to compute depth at points that defocus when they move. We first formulate a novel algorithm which recovers defocus blur and affine parameters simultaneously. Next we formulate a novel relationship (the blur-depth relationship) between defocus blur, relative object depth and three parameters based on camera motion and intrinsic camera parameters. We can handle the situation where a single image has points which have defocused, got sharper or are focally unperturbed. Moreover, our formulation is valid regardless …

Directory-Based Cache Coherence In Smtp Machines Without Memory Overhead Using Sparse Directories, Anton Kiriwas Jan 2004

Directory-Based Cache Coherence In Smtp Machines Without Memory Overhead Using Sparse Directories, Anton Kiriwas

HIM 1990-2015

As computing power has increased over the past few decades, science and engineering have found more and more uses for this new found computing power. With the advent of multiprocessor machines, we are achieving MIPS and FLOPS ratings previously unthought-of. Distributed shared-memory machines (DSM) are quickly becoming a powerful tool for computing, and the ability to build them from commodity off-the-shelf parts would be a great benefit to computing in general. In the paper entitled, "SMTp: An Architecture for Next-generation Scalable Multi-threading", Heinrich, et al. presents an architecture for a scalable DSM built from slightly modified machines capable of simultaneous …

General Geology And Geochemistry Of Metamorphosed Proterozoic Mafic Dikes And Sills, Tobacco Root Mountains, Montana, John B. Brady, Heidi K. Mohlman, Caroline Harris, Sarah K. Carmichael, Lisa J. Jacob, Wilfredo R. Chaparro

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Just over two billion years ago, basaltic magma intruded rocks of the Pony– Middle Mountain Metamorphic Suite and the Indian Creek Metamorphic Suite that now crop out in the Tobacco Root Mountains of Montana near the northwestern margin of the Wyoming province. Numerous examples can be found of mafic dikes that crosscut layering and gneissic banding, demonstrating that the host rocks were metamorphosed to form the gneissic texture prior to intrusion of the dikes. Although many of the intrusions appear to be sills that followed compositional layering, close inspection reveals low-angle discordance in nearly every case, consistent with rotation of …

Textures and mineral assemblages of metamorphic rocks of the Tobacco Root Mountains are consistent with metamorphism of all rocks during the Big Sky orogeny (1.77 Ga) at relatively high pressure (P >1.0 GPa) followed by differential reequilibration on a clockwise P-T path at lower pressures (0.6–0.8 GPa). The highest pressures are documented by coarse-grained kyanite and orthopyroxene in aluminous orthoamphibolites, which require P ≥ 1.0 GPa. Other higher-pressure mineral assemblages of note include kyanite + orthoamphibole and kyanite + K-feldspar. Abundant textural evidence for partial melting in pelitic and basaltic rocks includes leucosomes, very large (several cm across) porphyroblasts of …

Age And Growth Of Scotia Sea Icefish, Chaenocephalus Aceratus, From The South Shetland Islands, M. La Mesa, J. Ashford, E. Larson, M. Vacchi

OES Faculty Publications

Samples of Chaenocephalus aceratus (Lönnberg) were collected during a trawl survey carried out around the South Shetland Islands in January–February 2002. Fish were caught by commercial bottom trawl fishing down to 500 m depth, using a stratified randomized sampling design. As observed in other recent surveys within the same area, C. aceratus represented one of the predominant species. Overall, 357 specimens ranging from 13 and 67 cm (TL) were selected for the present study. Ages were estimated by counting annuli present in the sagittal otoliths, exposed by grinding and polishing along their sagittal plane. To estimate the precision of age …

Attachment Of Oligonucleotide Probes To Polymer Biochips And Its Application For The Detection Of Point Mutations, Yun Wang Jan 2004

Attachment Of Oligonucleotide Probes To Polymer Biochips And Its Application For The Detection Of Point Mutations, Yun Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is on the fabrication of polymer-based microfluidic arrays for the detection of genetic mutations. Poly(methyl methacrylate) was chosen as one of the polymer substrate materials due to its low background noise, low adsorption of biomolecules, and low assembly temperature. The surface modification of polymer substrates for covalent attachment of oligonucleotide probes, the construction of fluidic channels/arrays, and hybridization kinetics will be covered. As an example of the application, point mutation detection using immobilized arrays constructed in microfluidic devices will be demonstrated. The PMMA surface was derivatized with N-lithioethylenediamine solution to introduce amine groups, which were utilized for the …

Consequences Of Reservoir Drainage On Downstream Water Chemistry, Suspended Sediment, And Nutrients, Southwest Missouri, Mark W. Bowen Jan 2004

Consequences Of Reservoir Drainage On Downstream Water Chemistry, Suspended Sediment, And Nutrients, Southwest Missouri, Mark W. Bowen

MSU Graduate Theses

Construction and subsequent draining of reservoirs can have dramatic affects on the release of nutrients and sediments to waterways. This study describes how the temporary draining of a small reservoir for dam repair influences downstream water quality. The Valley Mill Reservoir has a surface area of 6.1 hectares and volume of 150,000 m3 when filled. Water chemistry monitoring and water sampling were performed at six sites during baseflow and ten sites during runoff events for one year. Water samples were analyzed for total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorous (TP), and total suspended sediment (TSS) concentrations. Results indicate that draining of Valley …

Evaluating Restored Oyster Reefs In Chesapeake Bay: How Habitat Structure Influences Ecological Function, Janet A. Nestlerode Jan 2004

Evaluating Restored Oyster Reefs In Chesapeake Bay: How Habitat Structure Influences Ecological Function, Janet A. Nestlerode

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A shortage of shell resources for restoring reefs of the Eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, has led to widespread use of substitute materials. The effectiveness of such alternative substrates as habitat for reef-associated fauna other than oysters is largely unresolved. I investigated the habitat value of oyster shell, surf clam (Spisula solidissima) shell, and pelletized coal ash reefs for benthic and nektonic communities. Oyster recruitment, survival, and growth were monitored on reefs of oyster and surf clam shell near the mouth of Chesapeake Bay and York River, USA. Oyster shell supported greater oyster growth and survival and offered the highest degree …

Complex Inner Shelf Environments: Observations And Modeling Of Morphodynamics And Scour Processes, Arthur C. Trembanis Jan 2004

Complex Inner Shelf Environments: Observations And Modeling Of Morphodynamics And Scour Processes, Arthur C. Trembanis

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The inner continental shelf is a complex environmental system marked by sharp variations in bed roughness. Such heterogeneous systems account for 80% of the non-rocky inner shelves worldwide. Interactions among forces (waves, tides, turbulence, and bioturbation) and roughness elements (bed forms, rocks, and anthropogenic objects) exert major controls on sedimentary processes. This study attempts to advance the knowledge and understanding of the morphodynamics of the inner shelf. This study investigates scour and morphodynamic processes at Tairua, New Zealand; Cedar Island, Virginia; Indian Rocks Beach, Florida; and Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina. Using data from the field, the study develops new conceptual …

Pathobiology Of Mycobacteria In Striped Bass (Morone Saxatilis), David T. Gauthier Jan 2004

Pathobiology Of Mycobacteria In Striped Bass (Morone Saxatilis), David T. Gauthier

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Striped bass (Morone saxatilis) in Chesapeake Bay, USA, are experiencing an epizootic of mycobacteriosis. This disease, caused by bacteria in the genus Mycobacterium, causes granulomatous lesions of the skin and viscera. Diseased fish are often emaciated, and fish with skin lesions may be significantly disfigured. The overall goal of this work was to examine aspects of the pathobiology of mycobacteria in striped bass via laboratory exposure studies and cellular assays. Striped bass were injected intraperitoneally with a sublethal dose of Mycobacterium marinum, M. shottsii, or M. gordonae and sampled for histology and bacteriology at regular intervals to 45 weeks post-injection …

Dinitrogen Fixation And Release Of Ammonium And Dissolved Organic Nitrogen By Trichodesmium Ims101, Margaret R. Mulholland, Deborah A. Bronk, Douglas G. Capone Jan 2004

Dinitrogen Fixation And Release Of Ammonium And Dissolved Organic Nitrogen By Trichodesmium Ims101, Margaret R. Mulholland, Deborah A. Bronk, Douglas G. Capone

OES Faculty Publications

Two methods used to measure dinitrogen (N2) fixation (acetylene reduction and 15N2 uptake) often result in different N2 fixation rates. Part of the discrepancy may arise from the observation that Trichodesmium can release a fraction of their recently fixed N2 as dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and/or ammonium (NH4 +). To resolve outstanding issues regarding N2 fixation and the production of dissolved combined nitrogen (N) by Trichodesmium, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of N2 fixation and the production of DON and NH4+ in cultures of Trichodesmium IMS101. We performed …
