Automatic Annotation Of Database Images For Query-By-Concept, Nualsawat Hiransakolwong Jan 2004

Automatic Annotation Of Database Images For Query-By-Concept, Nualsawat Hiransakolwong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As digital images become ubiquitous in many applications, the need for efficient and effective retrieval techniques is more demanding than ever. Query by Example (QBE) and Query by Concept (QBC) are among the most popular query models. The former model accepts example images as queries and searches for similar ones based on low-level features such as colors and textures. The latter model allows queries to be expressed in the form of high-level semantics or concept words, such as "boat" or "car," and finds images that match the specified concepts. Recent research has focused on the connections between these two models …

Algorithms (k-Nearest Neighbor [KNN], Discriminant Function Analysis [DFA], Marquardt-Backpropagation [MBP], and Resilient Backpropagation [RBP]) were implemented to analyze the collected data signals …

Polarimetric Characterization Of Random Electromagnetic Beams And Applications, Mircea Mujat Jan 2004

Polarimetric Characterization Of Random Electromagnetic Beams And Applications, Mircea Mujat

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Polarimetry is one of the principal means of investigating the interaction of light with matter. Theoretical models and experimental techniques are presented in this dissertation for polarimetric characterization of random electromagnetic beams and of signatures of random media in different scattering regimes and configurations. The degree of polarization rather than the full description of the state of polarization is of interest in multiple scattering and free space propagation where the statistical nature and not the deterministic component of light bears the relevant information. A new interferometric technique for determining the degree of polarization by measuring the intensity fluctuations in a …

Object Tracking And Activity Recognition In Video Acquired Using Mobile Cameras, Alper Yilmaz Jan 2004

Object Tracking And Activity Recognition In Video Acquired Using Mobile Cameras, Alper Yilmaz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to increasing demand on deployable surveillance systems in recent years, object tracking and activity recognition are receiving considerable attention in the research community. This thesis contributes to both the tracking and the activity recognition components of a surveillance system. In particular, for the tracking component, we propose two different approaches for tracking objects in video acquired by mobile cameras, each of which uses a different object shape representation. The first approach tracks the centroids of the objects in Forward Looking Infrared Imagery (FLIR) and is suitable for tracking objects that appear small in airborne video. The second approach tracks …

Far-Infrared Spectroelectrochemistry: A Study Of Linear Molybdenum/Iron/Sulfur Clusters, Michael D. Ryan, Lin Li

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The far-infrared spectroelectrochemistry of linear M/Fe/S (M=Mo, W) complexes was investigated in methylene chloride and dichloroethane. With CsI as spectral windows, bands above 200 cm−1 can be observed in methylene chloride, except for a weak methylene chloride band at 450 cm−1. Substitution of dichloroethane for methylene chloride, solvents of nearly identical electrochemical properties, allows one to observe solute bands in the 450-cm−1 region. The far-infrared spectroelectrochemistry of [MoFe2S4Cl4]2− and its tungsten analogue was investigated. The disappearance of the oxidation bands and the appearance of bands due to the reduced …

A New Optimal Algorithm For Outerplanar Graph Testing., Yuanyuan. Lin Jan 2004

A New Optimal Algorithm For Outerplanar Graph Testing., Yuanyuan. Lin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A graph is a mathematical abstraction that is useful in solving a variety of problems. NP-complete (Non-deterministic Polynomial) problems are computational problems for which there is no known polynomial time algorithm solving them. Unfortunately, many important graph theoretic problems are known to be NP-Complete for arbitrary graph. However, for some classes of graphs, polynomial time algorithms have been discovered. Owing to this reason, it is of both theoretical and practical interest to be able to tell if a given graph belongs to one of those classes. As a result, graph recognition has received considerable attention over the last few decades. …

Mining Classification Rules By Using Genetic Algorithms With Non-Random Initial Population And Uniform Operator, Korkut Koray Gündoğan, Bi̇lal Alataş, Ali̇ Karci

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Classification is a supervised learning method that induces a classification model from a database and is one of the most commonly applied data mining task. The frequently employed techniques are decision tree or neural network-based classification algorithms. This work presents an efficient genetic algorithm (GA) for classification rule mining technique that discovers comprehensible IF-THEN rules using a generalized uniform population method and a uniform operator inspired from the uniform population method. Initial population is generated by methodically eliminating the randomness by generalized uniform population method. In the subsequence generations, genetic diversity is ensured and premature convergence is prevented by the …

A Platform For Software Engineering Course Projects, Bi̇rol Aygün

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The importance of projects in software engineering courses is well known. Both synthetic and real-life projects have various advantages and disadvantages. Our aim was to create a framework where students can develop projects which reflect some of the complexities of real-life, involving many concurrent, interacting, asynchronous processes, each in a different stage of development, with wide temporal differences among them - some occurring within millisconds of each other and others executing sporadically over much longer periods. In this project, which was carried out in different arrangements in several software engineering courses in three universities, the students developed both the sub- …

Qos Routing Optimization Strategy Using Genetic Algorithm In Optical Fiber Communication Networks, Zhaoxia Wang, Zengqiang Chen, Zhuzhi Yuan Jan 2004

Qos Routing Optimization Strategy Using Genetic Algorithm In Optical Fiber Communication Networks, Zhaoxia Wang, Zengqiang Chen, Zhuzhi Yuan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper describes the routing problems in optical fiber networks, defines five constraints, induces and simplifies the evaluation function and fitness function, and proposes a routing approach based on the genetic algorithm, which includes an operator [OMO] to solve the QoS routing problem in optical fiber communication networks. The simulation results show that the proposed routing method by using this optimal maintain operator genetic algorithm (OMOGA) is superior to the common genetic algorithms (CGA). It not only is robust and efficient but also converges quickly and can be carried out simply, that makes it better than other complicated GA.

Loss And Dispersion Analysis Of Microstructured Fibers By Finite-Difference Method, Shangping Guo, Feng Wu, Sacharia Albin, Hsiang Tai, Robert S. Rogowski Jan 2004

Loss And Dispersion Analysis Of Microstructured Fibers By Finite-Difference Method, Shangping Guo, Feng Wu, Sacharia Albin, Hsiang Tai, Robert S. Rogowski

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The dispersion and loss in microstructured fibers are studied using a full-vectorial compact-2D finite-difference method in frequency-domain. This method solves a standard eigen-value problem from the Maxwell’s equations directly and obtains complex propagation constants of the modes using anisotropic perfectly matched layers. A dielectric constant averaging technique using Ampere’s law across the curved media interface is presented. Both the real and the imaginary parts of the complex propagation constant can be obtained with a high accuracy and fast convergence. Material loss, dispersion and spurious modes are also discussed.

Synthesis And Reactivity Of Tetrahydroimidazo [1,5-B][1,2,4]Oxadiazol- 2(1h)-Thiones, Necdet Coşkun, Fatma Ti̇rli̇ Tat

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of imidazoline 3-oxides 1 with methylisothiocyanate proceeds regio- and diastereoselectively to give tetrahydroimidazo[1,5-b][1,2,4]oxadiazol-2(1H)-thiones 3 in high yields. The cis configuration of the adducts was proved by our double cis elimination test as well as by NOESY experiments. Adducts 3a-c undergo ring opening at reflux in acetonitrile to give imidazoles while 3d-e undergo retro dipolar cycloaddition to give the starting nitrones 1d-e. The imidazooxadiazol-2-thiones 3a-e were treated with concentrated HCl in ethanol at 50 °C to give the corresponding 4H-[1,2,4]oxadiazole-5-thione only in cases in which the substituent at C-6 is an aryl.

Kinetics And Mechanism Of Oxidation Of N--Propanolamine By Dihydroxydiperiodatonickelate(Iv) In Alkaline Medium, Jin-Huan Shan, Jing Qian, Ming-Zhu Gao, Shi-Gang Shen, Han-Wen Sun

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The kinetics of oxidation of n--Propanolamine (n-PA) by dihydroxy diperiodato-nickelate(IV) (DPN) in alkaline medium was studied with spectrophotometry in a temperature range of 293.2-308.2 K. The reaction was found to be pseudo first-order with respect to DPN and fractional order to n-PA. The rate conatant k_{obs}, rose with an increase in the concentration of OH^{-} and a decrease in the concentration of IO_{4}^{-}. Added salts did not affect the rate and no free radical was detected. From the evaluation of linear data, a reaction mechanism is proposed which involves a pre-equilibrium of an adduct formation between n-PA and dihydroxymonoperiodatonickelate(IV) (MPN), …

Deviance Information Criterion For Comparing Stochastic Volatility Models, Andreas Berg, Renate Meyer, Jun Yu Jan 2004

Deviance Information Criterion For Comparing Stochastic Volatility Models, Andreas Berg, Renate Meyer, Jun Yu

Research Collection School Of Economics

Bayesian methods have been efficient in estimating parameters of stochastic volatility models for analyzing financial time series. Recent advances made it possible to fit stochastic volatility models of increasing complexity, including covariates, leverage effects, jump components, and heavy-tailed distributions. However, a formal model comparison via Bayes factors remains difficult. The main objective of this article is to demonstrate that model selection is more easily performed using the deviance information criterion (DIC). It combines a Bayesian measure of fit with a measure of model complexity. We illustrate the performance of DIC in discriminating between various different stochastic volatility models using simulated …
