The Effects Of Environmentally Relevant Doses Of Perchlorate (Clo4-) On Rana Pipiens Metamorphosis And Development, Andrea N. Golli
The Effects Of Environmentally Relevant Doses Of Perchlorate (Clo4-) On Rana Pipiens Metamorphosis And Development, Andrea N. Golli
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of perchlorate on the development and growth of Rana pipiens. Ammonium perchlorate is a rocket fuel oxidizer that is known to interfere with the function of the thyroid gland and some of the highest United States surface water concentration exists in the Las Vegas Wash, NV. Perchlorate not only blocks the body’s ability to incorporate iodine into T3 and T4 hormones through the sodium iodine symporter system, but also depletes the thyroid glands’ internal stores of iodine. Many of the steps that regulate metamorphosis in amphibians …

Inner Shelf Circulation In Coastal Virginia: A Data Assimilation Approach, Hector Hito Sepulveda
Inner Shelf Circulation In Coastal Virginia: A Data Assimilation Approach, Hector Hito Sepulveda
OES Theses and Dissertations
The primary objective of this dissertation is to describe the tidal and subtidal flow patterns over the inner shelf of the Delmarva Peninsula, located in the Mid-Atlantic Bight of the United States (36.6–38.0 N), north of the Chesapeake Bay. The objective is pursued with a combination of direct measurements and numerical assimilative techniques. The dynamic balance of the study area is little known, and the distribution of tidal properties has not been described for this area since very rough descriptions in the 1950's. Hydrographic and current velocity profiles from four regional cruises in the inner shelf were used to study …
An Investigation Of Dissolved Organic Matter In A Shallow Coastal Bay Subject To Aureococcus Anophagefferens Blooms, Jean-Paul Simjouw
An Investigation Of Dissolved Organic Matter In A Shallow Coastal Bay Subject To Aureococcus Anophagefferens Blooms, Jean-Paul Simjouw
OES Theses and Dissertations
Aureococcus anophagefferens, the pelagophyte responsible for brown tide blooms, was identified in Chincoteague Bay in 1997 and has “bloomed” there since at least 1998. Aureococcus anophagefferens is capable of using dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) substrates to support growth, and this utilization is hypothesized to give the organism a competitive advantage relative to other phytoplankton when inorganic nutrient concentrations are low or depleted. Because previous studies suggest dissolved organic matter (DOM) is important in initiating and sustaining brown tide blooms, a field study of the variations in DOC concentration and DOM composition was performed at …
An Analysis Of Case-Base Editing In A Spam Filtering Systems, Sarah Jane Delany, Padraig Cunningham
An Analysis Of Case-Base Editing In A Spam Filtering Systems, Sarah Jane Delany, Padraig Cunningham
Conference papers
Because of the changing nature of spam, a spam filtering system that uses machine learning will need to be dynamic. This suggests that a case-based (memory-based) approach may work well. Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) is a lazy approach to machine learning where induction is delayed to run time. This means that the case base can be updated continuously and new training data is immediately available to the induction process. In this paper we present a detailed description of such a system called ECUE and evaluate design decisions concerning the case representation. We compare its performance with an alternative system that uses …

An Agent-Based Approach To Adaptive Navigational Support Within 3d-Environments, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, Gregory O'Hare, Brian Duffy, Alan Martin
Conference papers
his paper investigates mechanisms and approaches to assisting user navigation and exploration within 3-dimensional worlds. Specifically it advocates the deployment of an agentbased approach to dynamic system assistance and intervention. A performance equation is presented in a basic and an extended version, which is used to activate system interventions and to evaluate user performances online and offline. The measure is derived via a light-weight computationally inexpensive masking approach. We describe some navigation experiments and the results of navigational intervention via the damping of the sensitivity of the navigational keys. Interestingly the navigational assistance does not yield improvements in the subjects’ …

Xafs Debye-Waller Factors For Zn Metalloproteins, N. Dimakis, Grant Bunker
Xafs Debye-Waller Factors For Zn Metalloproteins, N. Dimakis, Grant Bunker
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations
An accurate and practical method for the calculation and use of thermal x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) Debye-Waller factors (DWFs) in active sites of metalloproteins is presented. These factors are calculated on model clusters within the local density functional approximation with nonlocal corrections. The DWFs are mapped out and parametrized as a function of the first shell distance and an angle (where applicable), for all significant single and multiple scattering paths, as well as the sample temperature. This approach is applied to the biologically essential but spectroscopically silent Zn+2 active sites composed of histidines, cysteines, and carboxylate ligands in homogeneous …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations
Data collected by the GEO 600 and LIGO interferometric gravitational wave detectors during their first observational science run were searched for continuous gravitational waves from the pulsar J1939+2134 at twice its rotation frequency. Two independent analysis methods were used and are demonstrated in this paper: a frequency domain method and a time domain method. Both achieve consistent null results, placing new upper limits on the strength of the pulsar’s gravitational wave emission. A model emission mechanism is used to interpret the limits as a constraint on the pulsar’s equatorial ellipticity.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Logistics has been an important part of every economy and every business entity. The worldwide trend in globalization has led to many companies outsourcing their logistics function to Third-Party Logistics (3PL) companies, so as to focus on their core competencies. This paper attempts to broadly identify and categorize the challenges faced by 3PL companies and discover potential gaps for future research. Some of the challenges will be related with the experience and information collected from interviews with two 3PL companies.
Powerful Change Part 2: Reducing The Power Demands Of Mobile Devices, Rajesh Krishna Balan
Powerful Change Part 2: Reducing The Power Demands Of Mobile Devices, Rajesh Krishna Balan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Consumers expect their mobile devices to be small and light, have a decent battery lifetime, and still be powerful enough to run all their desired applications. The need to satisfy such consumer demands has driven mobile-device manufacturers to make products (such as PDAs and cell phones) that match these needs. However, this inevitably requires tradeoffs. Building smaller, lighter devices requires sacrificing the device's battery capacity because battery technology is still fairly dense and heavy, and contributes most of a mobile device's size and weight. But, mobile devices with the required resources to run useful desktop applications need additional battery power …
Neural Analysis Of Top Shielded Multilayered Coplanar Waveguides, Mustafa Türkmen, Celal Yildiz, Şeref Sağiroğlu
Neural Analysis Of Top Shielded Multilayered Coplanar Waveguides, Mustafa Türkmen, Celal Yildiz, Şeref Sağiroğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been promising tools for many applications. In recent years, a computer-aided design approach based on (ANNs) has been introduced to microwave modelling, simulation and optimization. In this work, the characteristic parameters of top shielded multilayered coplanar waveguides (CPWs) have been determined with the use of ANN models. These neural models were trained with Levenberg-Marquardt, resilient propagation, Bayesian regulation, quasi-Newton, and backpropagation learning algorithms. Better performance and learning speed with a simpler structure were achieved from these models. The results have shown that the estimated characteristic parameters are in very good agreement with the computed results …
An Implicit Surface Modeling Technique Based On A Modular Neural Network Architecture, Manuel Carcenac
An Implicit Surface Modeling Technique Based On A Modular Neural Network Architecture, Manuel Carcenac
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Independently from artificial intelligence applications, an artificial neural network can be viewed as a powerful tool for function reconstruction. Previous papers used this property to model an implicit surface out of some control points by reconstructing its underlying scalar field. Such an approach requests the neural network to memorize the control points, which has turned problematic for complex surfaces. In our paper, we show that this problem can be efficiently tackled by adapting the architecture of the neural network to the features compounding the surface: by learning first these features independently and then blending them gradually together, our modular architecture …

Real-Time Classification Algorithm For Recognition Of Machine Operating Modes By Use Of Self-Organizing Maps, Gancho Vachkov, Yuhiko Kiyota, Koji Komatsu, Satoshi Fujii
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper a new algorithm for classification and real-time recognition of different a-priorily assumed operating modes for construction machines is proposed. This algorithm utilizes the effectiveness of the Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) for creating the so called Separation Models, that are able to distinguish each operating mode separately. After training, these models are used in a real-time procedure, which calculates at each sampling time the minimal Euclidean distances from the current data point to a certain node of each SOM. Then the separation model (represented by a respective SOM) that has the least minimal distance to this data point defines …

A Simple And Global Optimization Algorithm For Engineering Problems: Differential Evolution Algorithm, Dervi̇ş Karaboğa, Selçuk Ökdem
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm is a new heuristic approach mainly having three advantages; finding the true global minimum regardless of the initial parameter values, fast convergence, and using few control parameters. DE algorithm is a population based algorithm like genetic algorithms using similar operators; crossover, mutation and selection. In this work, we have compared the performance of DE algorithm to that of some other well known versions of genetic algorithms: PGA, Grefensstette, Eshelman. In simulation studies, De Jong's test functions have been used. From the simulation results, it was observed that the convergence speed of DE is significantly better than …

This article proposes the 7 C's for realizing quality-oriented software engineering practices. All the desired qualities of this approach are expressed in short by the term living software. The 7 C's are: Concern-oriented processes, Canonical models, Composable models, Certifiable models, Constructible models, Closure property of models and Controllable models. Each C is explained by the help of a set of definitions, a short overview of the background work and the problems that software engineers may experience in realizing the corresponding C. Further, throughout the article, a software development example is presented for illustrating the realization of the 7 C's. Finally, …

A Pattern Based Approach To Web Design Formalization, Ahmet Sikici, Yasemi̇n Topaloğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
World Wide Web is a global information network that affects many fields of our lives. The distributed, interlinked, visual and heterogeneous structure of the web makes it an irregular development environment. In this paper we propose a pattern based approach for increasing the effectiveness of development for the Web environment. This approach is based on the representation of the core meaning of each design as a set of patterns and requires the formulation of abstract solutions in a mathematical precision. This way not only reusable design experience will be codified unambiguously, but a smooth transition between the design and implementation …

An Agile Information Systems Development Method In Use, Mehmet Nafi̇z Aydin, Frank Harmsen, Kees Van Slooten, Robert Stegwee
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Recently, agile information systems development methods, agile methods in short, have got considerable attention from practitioners. One of the reasons seems that agile methods, to some degree, can be adaptable to different project situations. However, little empirical research has been conducted on this subject. The major goal of this research is to identify which aspects of agile methods are perceived as most critical and difficult to realize and how such aspects are adapted in practice. To reach this goal we studied the working practices concerning the adaptation of an agile method in the IT department of one of the leading …
A Robustness Analysis Of Game-Theoretic Cdma Power Control, Xingzhe Fan, Murat Arcak, John T. Wen
A Robustness Analysis Of Game-Theoretic Cdma Power Control, Xingzhe Fan, Murat Arcak, John T. Wen
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper studies robustness of a gradient-type CDMA uplink power control algorithm with respect to disturbances and time-delays. This problem is of practical importance because unmodeled secondary interference effects from neighboring cells play the role of disturbances, and propagation delays are ubiquitous in wireless data networks. We first show L_p-stability, for p \in [1,\infity], with respect to additive disturbances. We pursue L_{\infity}-stability within the input-to-state stability (ISS) framework of Sontag [7], which makes explicit the vanishing effect of the initial conditions. Next, using the ISS property and a loop transformation, we prove that global asymptotic stability is preserved for sufficiently …
Global Stability Analysis Of An End-To-End Congestion Control Scheme For General Topology Networks With Delay, Tansu Alpcan, Tamer Başar
Global Stability Analysis Of An End-To-End Congestion Control Scheme For General Topology Networks With Delay, Tansu Alpcan, Tamer Başar
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
We analyze the stability properties of an end-to-end congestion control scheme under fixed heterogeneous delays, and for general network topologies. The scheme analyzed is based on the congestion control game of [1], with the starting point being the unique Nash equilibrium of that game. We prove global stability of this solution (and hence of the congestion control algorithm) under a mild symmetricity condition. We further demonstrate the stability of the algorithm numerically for various delays, user numbers, and topologies
Flow Controller Design And Performance Analysis For Self-Similar Network Traffic, Peng Yan
Flow Controller Design And Performance Analysis For Self-Similar Network Traffic, Peng Yan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Recent studies of high-resolution traffic measurement discovered the self-similarity in both LAN and WAN traffic. In this paper, we introduce a two-degree of freedom rate based flow controller, which includes a robust H^{\infity} control block and an LMMSE based capacity predictor. The former part can guarantee the robust stability against time-varying time delay uncertainties and the latter improves the transient response by predicting the self-similar cross-traffic. Implementation issues are discussed and performance analysis is provided to validate our design. We also investigate the prediction and control in larger time scale which is more applicable for the real network environment

Let X be distributed as matrix normal with mean M and covariance matrix W⊗V, where W and V are nonnegative definite (nnd) matrices. In this paper we present a simple version of the Cochran’s theorem for matrix quadratic forms in X. The theorem is used to characterize the class of nnd matrices W such that the matrix quadratic forms that occur in multivariate analysis of variance are independent and Wishart except for a scale factor. © 2003 Elsevier Inc. Analytical Intercomparison Between Flow Injection-Chemiluminescence And Flow Injection-Spectrophotometry For The Determination Of Picomolar Concentrations Of Iron In Seawater, Andrew R. Bowie, Peter N. Sedwick, Paul J. Worsfold
Analytical Intercomparison Between Flow Injection-Chemiluminescence And Flow Injection-Spectrophotometry For The Determination Of Picomolar Concentrations Of Iron In Seawater, Andrew R. Bowie, Peter N. Sedwick, Paul J. Worsfold
OES Faculty Publications
A lab- and ship-based analytical intercomparison of two flow injection methods for the determination of iron in seawater was conducted, using three different sets of seawater samples collected from the Southern Ocean and South Atlantic. In one exercise, iron was determined in three different size-fractions (< 0.03 &μm, < 0.4 μm, and unfiltered) in an effort to better characterize the operational nature of each analytical technique with respect to filter size. Measured Fe concentrations were in the range 0.19 to 1.19 nM using flow injection with luminol chemiluminescence detection (FI-CL), and 0.07 to 1.54 nM using flow injection with catalytic spectrophotometric detection with N, N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine dihydrochloride (FI-DPD). The arithmetic mean for the FI-CL method was higher (by 0.09 nM) than the FI-DPD method for dissolved (< 0.4 μm) Fe, a difference that is comparable to the analytical blanks, which were as high as 0.13 nM ( CL) and 0.09 nM (DPD). There was generally good agreement between the FI-CL determinations for the < 0.03 μm size fraction and the FI-DPD determinations for the < 0.4 μm size fraction in freshly collected samples. Differences in total-dissolvable ( unfiltered) Fe concentrations determined by the two FI methods were more variable, reflecting the added complexity associated with the analysis of partially digested particulate material in these samples. Overall, however, the FI-CL determinations were significantly (P = 0.05) lower than the FI-DPD determinations for the unfiltered samples. Our results suggest that the observed, systematic inter-method differences reflect measurement of different physicochemical fractions of Fe present in seawater, such that colloidal and/or organic iron species are better determined by the FI-CL method than the FI-DPD method. This idea is supported by our observation that inter-method differences were largest for freshly collected acidified seawater, which suggests extended storage (>6 months) of acidified samples as a possible protocol for the determination of dissolved iron in seawater.
