Analysis And Comparison Of Three Acoustic Energy Density Probes, Lance Lester Locey Oct 2004

Analysis And Comparison Of Three Acoustic Energy Density Probes, Lance Lester Locey

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional methods for the investigation of sound fields generally rely on a microphone to convert sound pressure into an electrical signal which can be recorded, displayed, and so forth. The squared sound pressure is directly related to potential energy density. Consequently, the measurement of sound pressure alone does not inherently provide insight into the total energy density of the sound field. Specifically, no information about the kinetic energy density of the sound field is available from this measurement alone. However, it is possible to use two microphones to estimate particle velocity. The squared particle velocity magnitude is directly related to …

Angular Dependence Of The Dipole-Dipole Interaction In A Nearly One-Dimensional Sample Of Rydberg Atoms, Thomas J. Carroll, Katharine Claringbould, Anne Goodsell, M. J. Lim, Michael W. Noel Oct 2004

Angular Dependence Of The Dipole-Dipole Interaction In A Nearly One-Dimensional Sample Of Rydberg Atoms, Thomas J. Carroll, Katharine Claringbould, Anne Goodsell, M. J. Lim, Michael W. Noel

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Atoms in an ultracold highly excited sample are strongly coupled through the dipole-dipole interaction. In an effort to understand and manipulate the complicated interactions in this system we are investigating their dependence on the relative orientation of the dipoles. By focusing a 480 nm beam from a tunable dye laser into a magneto-optical trap, we produce a nearly one-dimensional sample of Rydberg atoms. The trap lies at the center of four conducting rods with which we can vary the magnitude and direction of the electric field at the trap, thus controlling the orientation of the dipoles with respect to the …

Stabilizing Moduli With String Cosmology, Scott Watson Oct 2004

Stabilizing Moduli With String Cosmology, Scott Watson

Physics - All Scholarship

In this talk I will discuss the role of finite temperature quantum corrections in string cosmology and show that they can lead to a stabilization mechanism for the volume moduli. I will show that from the higher dimensional perspective this results from the effect of states of enhanced symmetry on the one-loop free energy. These states lead not only to stabilization, but also suggest an alternative model for cold dark matter. At late times, when the low energy effective field theory gives the appropriate description of the dynamics, the moduli will begin to slow-roll and stabilization will generically fail. However, …

Voronoi Diagrams, Michael Mumm Oct 2004

Voronoi Diagrams, Michael Mumm

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Suppose we have a finite number of distinct points in the plane. We refer to these points as sites. We wish to partition the plane into disjoint regions called cells, each of which contains exactly one site, so that all other points within a cell are closer to that cell's site than to any other site.

Mechanisms Of Lead, Copper, And Zinc Retention By Phosphate Rock, Xinde Cao, Lena Q. Ma, Dean R. Rhue, Chip S. Appel Oct 2004

Mechanisms Of Lead, Copper, And Zinc Retention By Phosphate Rock, Xinde Cao, Lena Q. Ma, Dean R. Rhue, Chip S. Appel

Earth and Soil Sciences

The solid–liquid interface reaction between phosphate rock (PR) and metals (Pb, Cu, and Zn) was studied. Phosphate rock has the highest affinity for Pb, followed by Cu and Zn, with sorption capacities of 138, 114, and 83.2 mmol/kg PR, respectively. In the Pb–Cu–Zn ternary system, competitive metal sorption occurred with sorption capacity reduction of 15.2%, 48.3%, and 75.6% for Pb, Cu, and Zn, respectively compared to the mono-metal systems. A fractional factorial design showed the interfering effect in the order of Pb > Cu > Zn. Desorption of Cu and Zn was sensitive to pH change, increasing with pH decline, whereas Pb …

Coastal Change And Beach Ridges Along The Northwest Coast Of Peru: Image And Gis Analysisof The Chira, Piura, And Colán Beach-Ridge Plains, Stacy Shafer Rogers, Daniel H. Sandweiss, Kirk A. Maasch, Daniel F. Belknap, Peggy Agouris

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

Since approximately 5200 cal yrs BP, five sets of eight to nine beach ridges were built and preserved along the northwestern Peruvian coastal desert (3o30'S-9oS). Potential ridge-building mechanisms in the hyper-arid environment of northwest Peru include El Nifio floods and storms, seismic activity, and sea-level change, as well as more gradualc limate changes that affectedc oastal morphologyI. mage processinga nd GeographicI nformationS ystem (GIS) methods were used to analyze aerial photographs and measure historic coastal patterns along three beach-ridge plains over a 37-year time period. Coastal features were digitized from image mosaics of each ridge plain at different time intervals …
