Effects Of Electron Irradiation On The Ferroelectric Properties Of Langmuir-Blodgett Copolymer Films, Christina M. Othon, F.B. Bateman, Stephen Ducharme Jul 2005

Effects Of Electron Irradiation On The Ferroelectric Properties Of Langmuir-Blodgett Copolymer Films, Christina M. Othon, F.B. Bateman, Stephen Ducharme

Stephen Ducharme Publications

he effect of irradiation on the ferroelectric properties of Langmuir-Blodgett films of the copolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) was investigated using 1-MeV electrons for doses from 0.16 to 1.10 MGy, where 1 Gray (Gy)=100 rad. Irradiation causes a systematic decrease in the phase-transition temperature, crystallinity, and spontaneous polarization of the films. The crystallinity and spontaneous polarization of the films decreased by amounts proportional to the dose, both tending toward zero near a dose of 1.30 MGy. The ferroelectric-paraelectric phase-transition temperature, however, was only reduced by about 12%, indicating that the primary effect of irradiation was to convert a crystalline ferroelectric material to …

On The Growth Problem For Skew And Symmetric Conference Matrices, C. Kravvaritis, M. Mitrouli, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

C. Koukouvinos, M. Mitrouli and Jennifer Seberry, in "Growth in Gaussian elimination for weighing matrices, W (n, n — 1)", Linear Algebra and its Appl., 306 (2000), 189-202, conjectured that the growth factor for Gaussian elimination of any completely pivoted weighing matrix of order n and weight n— 1 is n— 1 and that the first and last few pivots are (1,2,2,3 or 4, ..., n–1 or (n–1)/2, , (n–1)/2, n–1) for n > 14. In the present paper we study the growth problem for skew and symmetric conference matrices. An algorithm for extending a k × k matrix with elements …

Color Mixing In The Metering Zone Of A Single Screw Extruder: Numerical Simulations And Experimental Validation, Kirill Alemaskin, Ica Manas Zloczower, Miron Kaufman Jul 2005

Color Mixing In The Metering Zone Of A Single Screw Extruder: Numerical Simulations And Experimental Validation, Kirill Alemaskin, Ica Manas Zloczower, Miron Kaufman

Physics Faculty Publications

We present numerical simulations for an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS) resin extrusion in an industrial conventional single-screw extruder. Based upon the flow field patterns obtained in the simulations, a particle tracking procedure was employed to obtain information about the spatial distribution of particle tracers of two colors. Results of the simulation were compared with experimental data obtained under similar extrusion conditions. To evaluate the degree of color mixing and color homogeneity for the system, we employ a specific index calculated based upon the Shannon entropy for two species populations.

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

The Paleocene Tongue River Member of the Fort Union Formation contains trace-fossil associations indicative of marine influence in otherwise freshwater facies. The identified ichnogenera include: Arenicolites, Diplocraterion, Monocraterion, Ophiomorpha, Rhizocorallium, Skolithos linearis, Teichichnus, Thalassinoides, and one form of uncertain affinity. Two species of the marine diatom Coscinodiscus occur a few meters above the base of the member. The burrows occur in at least five discrete, thin, rippled, fine-grained sandstone beds within the lower 85 m of the member west of the Cedar Creek anticline (CCA) in the Signal Butte, Terry Badlands, and Pine Hills areas. Two discrete burrowed beds …

Game Theoretical Models And Algorithms For Rate Control In Video Compression, Jiancong Luo Jul 2005

Game Theoretical Models And Algorithms For Rate Control In Video Compression, Jiancong Luo

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations

This thesis investigates game theory based rate control algorithms for optimizing the bit allocation in video compression. The first algorithm utilizes the cooperative bargaining game in a MB level rate control algorithm to optimize the perceptual quality while guaranteeing "fairness" in bit allocation among macroblocks. The algorithm first allocates the target bits to frames based on their coding complexity; a method to estimate the coding complexity of the remaining frames is proposed. Next, macroblocks of a frame play cooperative games such that each macroblock competes for a share of resources (bits) to optimize its quantization scale while considering the human …

Automating Inhabitant Interactions In Home And Workplace Environments Through Data-Driven Generation Of Hierarchical Partially-Observable Markov Decision Processes, Gregory Michael Youngblood Jul 2005

Automating Inhabitant Interactions In Home And Workplace Environments Through Data-Driven Generation Of Hierarchical Partially-Observable Markov Decision Processes, Gregory Michael Youngblood

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations

Markov models provide a useful representation of system behavioral actions and state observations, but they do not scale well. Utilizing a hierarchy and abstraction through hierarchical hidden Markov models (HHMMs) improves scalability, but these structures are usually constructed manually using knowledge engineering techniques. We introduce a new method of automatically constructing HHMMs using the output of a sequential data-mining algorithm, Episode Discovery, and apply it to solving automation problems in the intelligent environment domain. Repetitive behavioral actions in sensor rich environments such as smart homes can be observed and categorized into periodic and frequent episodes through data-mining techniques utilizing the …

Photoinduced One-Electron Reduction Of Alkyl Halides By Dirhodium(Ii,Ii) Tetraformamidinates And A Related Complex With Visible Light, Dean Johnston

Chemistry Faculty Scholarship

Various substituted dirhodium tetraformamidinate complexes, Rh(2)(R-form)(4) (R = p-CF(3), p-Cl, p-OCH(3), m-OCH(3); form = N,N'-diphenylformamidinate), and the new complex Rh(2)(tpgu)(4) (tpgu = 1,2,3-triphenylguanidinate) have been investigated as potential agents for the photoremediation of saturated halogenated aliphatic compounds, RX (R = alkyl group). The synthesis and characterization of the complexes is reported, and the crystal structure of Rh(2)(tpgu)(4) is presented. The lowest energy transition of the complexes is observed at approximately 870 nm and the complexes react with alkyl chlorides and alkyl bromides under low energy irradiation (lambda(irr) > or = 795 nm), but not when kept in the dark. The metal-containing …

Expandable Graphite/Polyamide-6 Nanocomposites, Fawn Marie Uhl, Qiang Yao, Hiroyoshi Nakajima, Evangelos Manias, Charles A. Wilkie Jul 2005

Expandable Graphite/Polyamide-6 Nanocomposites, Fawn Marie Uhl, Qiang Yao, Hiroyoshi Nakajima, Evangelos Manias, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Polyamide-6 (PA-6)/graphite nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending, using a variety of graphites, including virgin graphite, expandable graphites and expanded graphite. The resulting nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, cone calorimetry, and tensile mechanical analysis. Nanocomposite formation does occur, as denoted by the nanometre dispersion of graphite layers in the polymer matrix, and the dispersion depends on the graphite treatment. The material properties of the resulting composites are improved relative to the virgin/unfilled polymer; in particular, there is an enhancement of the thermal stability without any significant deterioration of the mechanical properties.

Simulation Of Charged Particle Trajectories In The Neutron Decay Correlation Experiment Abba, D. Desai, G. Greene, R. Mahurin, D. Bowman, John R. Calarco

Physics & Astronomy

The proposed neutron decay correlation experiment, abBA, will directly detect the direction of emission of decay protons and electrons as well as providing spectroscopic information for both particles. In order to provide this information, the abBA experiment incorporates spatially varying electric and magnetic fields. We report on detailed simulations of the decay particle trajectories in order to assess the impact of various systematic effects on the experimental observables. These include among others; adiabaticity of particle orbits, tracking of orbits, reversal of low energy protons due to inhomogeneous electric field, and accuracy of proton time of flight measurements. Several simulation methods …

The Reflection Property In Normed Linear Planes With Applications To Generalized Conics, Edward J. O'Neill, Mostafa Ghandehari Jul 2005

The Reflection Property In Normed Linear Planes With Applications To Generalized Conics, Edward J. O'Neill, Mostafa Ghandehari

Mathematics Technical Papers

The ancient Greek mathematician Heron was the first to solve the problem of finding the shortest path from point A to point B on one side of the line L, subject to the condition that the path goes from A to L and then to B (figure 1). Figure 1. His solution involved going from A to point R on L and then to B such that the line segments AR and BR make equal angles with L. This is exactly the path a light ray from A to B if L were a mirror. Heron included this proposition in …

Validating Human–Robot Interaction Schemes In Multitasking Environments, Jacob W. Crandall, Michael A. Goodrich, Curtis W. Nielsen, Dan R. Olsen Jr.

Faculty Publications

The ability of robots to autonomously perform tasks is increasing. More autonomy in robots means that the human managing the robot may have available free time. It is desirable to use this free time productively, and a current trend is to use this available free time to manage multiple robots. We present the notion of neglect tolerance as a means for determining how robot autonomy and interface design determine how free time can be used to support multitasking, in general, and multirobot teams, in particular. We use neglect tolerance to 1) identify the maximum number of robots that can be …

Categorizing And Extracting Information From Multilingual Html Documents, Yiu-Kai D. Ng, Seungjin Lim

Faculty Publications

The amount of online information written in different natural languages and the number of non-English speaking Internet users have been increasing tremendously during the past decade. In order to provide high-performance access of multilingual information on the Internet, we have developed a data analysis and querying system (DatAQs) that (i) analyzes, identifies, and categorizes languages used in HTML documents, (ii) extracts information from HTML documents of interest written in different languages, (iii) allows the user to submit queries for retrieving extracted information in the same natural language provided by the query engine of DatAQs using a menu-driven user interface, and …

Detecting Similar Html Documents Using A Fuzzy Set Information Retrieval Approach, Yiu-Kai D. Ng, Rajiv Yerra Jul 2005

Detecting Similar Html Documents Using A Fuzzy Set Information Retrieval Approach, Yiu-Kai D. Ng, Rajiv Yerra

Faculty Publications

Web documents that are either partially or completely duplicated in content are easily found on the Internet these days. Not only do these documents create redundant information on the Web, which take longer to filter unique information and cause additional storage space, but also they degrade the efficiency of Web information retrieval. In this paper, we present a new approach for detecting similar Web documents, especially HTML documents. Our detection approach determines the odd ratio of any two documents, which makes use of the degrees of resemblance of the documents, and graphically displays the locations of similar (not necessarily the …

Beginnings Of Range Management: Albert F. Potter, First Chief Of Grazing, U.S. Forest Service, And Photographic Comparison Of His 1902 Forest Reserve Survey In Utah With Conditions 100 Year Later, David A. Prevedel, Curtis M. Johnson Jul 2005

Johnson

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The period from 1880 to 1900 is regarded as the period of “spoilation” of western rangelands. In Albert Potters own words, “Quick profits and fortunes lead to speculation and incredible numbers of stock were placed upon the range. Cowman was arrayed against sheep man, big owners against small, and might ruled more often than right.” The Government took no action until 1891 when the Creative Act established the Forest Reserve system under the Interior Department’s General Land Office (GLO). Lacking authority and undermined by political appointees, the GLO foundered until the reserves were transferred to the Bureau of Forestry in …

Self-Energy Values For P States In Hydrogen And Low-Z Hydrogenlike Ions, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Peter J. Mohr Jul 2005

Self-Energy Values For P States In Hydrogen And Low-Z Hydrogenlike Ions, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Peter J. Mohr

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We describe a nonperturbative (in Z α ) numerical evaluation of the one-photon electron self-energy for 3P1/2 , 3P3/2 , 4P1/2, and 4P3/2 states in hydrogenlike atomic systems with charge numbers Z = 1 to 5. The numerical results are found to be in agreement with known terms in the expansion of the self-energy in powers of Z α and lead to improved theoretical predictions for the self-energy shift of these states.

Dramatic Reduction In Predation On Marine Turtle Nests Through Improved Predator Monitoring And Management, Richard M. Engeman, R. Erik Martin, Henry T. Smith, John Woolard, Carrie K. Crady, Stephanie A. Shwiff, Bernice Constantin, Margo Stahl, John Griner Jul 2005

Dramatic Reduction In Predation On Marine Turtle Nests Through Improved Predator Monitoring And Management, Richard M. Engeman, R. Erik Martin, Henry T. Smith, John Woolard, Carrie K. Crady, Stephanie A. Shwiff, Bernice Constantin, Margo Stahl, John Griner

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We describe improvements to monitoring/ indexing methodology for predators of marine turtle nests on the east coast of Florida, and the resulting marine turtle conservation implications from integrating the methodology into predator management. A strip transect from dune line to the shore improved an already successful design for monitoring raccoons, and was also sensitive for armadillos. The data were integrated into predator management operations to effectively and efficiently remove the species responsible for turtle nest predation. Tracking plot data also served to validate predator patterns of behavior relative to turtle nesting and improve prospects for preventive predator management strategies. Perhaps …

Opal: In Vivo Based Preservation Framework For Locating Lost Web Pages, Terry L. Harrison Jul 2005

Opal: In Vivo Based Preservation Framework For Locating Lost Web Pages, Terry L. Harrison

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

We present Opal, a framework for interactively locating missing web pages (http status code 404). Opal is an example of "in vivo" preservation: harnessing the collective behavior of web archives, commercial search engines, and research projects for the purpose of preservation. Opal servers learn from their experiences and are able to share their knowledge with other Opal servers using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). Using cached copies that can be found on the web, Opal creates lexical signatures which are then used to search for similar versions of the web page. Using the OAI-PMH to facilitate …

Collaborative Caching For Efficient And Robust Certificate Authority Services In Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks, Laith Abdulaziz Al-Sulaiman

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Security in Mobile Ad-Hoc Network (MANET) is getting a lot of attention due to its inherent vulnerability to a wide spectrum of attacks. Threats exist in every layer of MANET stack, and different solutions have been adapted for each security problem. Additionally, availability is an important criterion in most MANET solutions, but many security frameworks did not consider it. Public-Key Infrastructure (PKI) is no exception, and its deployment in MANET needs major design and implementation modifications that can fit constraints unique to this environment. Our focus in this dissertation is to adapt and increase the availability of Certificate Authority (CA) …
