Prioritized Multiplicative Schwarz Procedures For Solving Linear Systems, Nathaniel Powell, Kevin Seppi, Quinn O. Snell, David Wingate Apr 2005

Prioritized Multiplicative Schwarz Procedures For Solving Linear Systems, Nathaniel Powell, Kevin Seppi, Quinn O. Snell, David Wingate

Faculty Publications

We describe a new algorithm designed to quickly and robustly solve general linear problems of the form Ax = b. We describe both serial and parallel versions of the algorithm, which can be considered a prioritized version of an Alternating Multiplicative Schwarz procedure. We also adopt a general view of alternating Multiplicative Schwarz procedures which motivates their use on arbitrary problems (even which may not have arisen from problems that are naturally decomposable) by demonstrating that, even in a serial context, algorithms should use many, many partitions to accelerate convergence; having such an over-partitioned system also allows easy parallelization of …

Cardano's Solution To The Cubic: A Mathematical Soap Opera, Kacee Ballou Apr 2005

Cardano's Solution To The Cubic: A Mathematical Soap Opera, Kacee Ballou

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Through this research into the solution of the cubic, I hope to learn the thoughts of mathematicians during this period of history. This knowledge must be conveyed in a way that is historically and mathematically accurate, yet comprehensible and readily available to use in a class of eighth grade math students. It is my wish that as we begin to delve into the world of algebraic and graphical solutions to the problems in the eighth grade text, students will be able to make a connection with this information to that they are currently using to solve their problems. They should …

mathematics curriculum. As seen in her paper, the solution of the cubic essentially involves the use of a clever substitution in the general cubic in order to reduce it into a cubic without the square term, which in turn is factorable as a quadratic provided one makes another substitution. A natural question to ask ourselves, which mathematicians in the colorful theory of equations undoubtedly did as well, is how far can we push this technique of cle ver substitutions to solve higher degree equations. These substitutions are called Tschirnhaus transformations and have a pattern of the form x = y …

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has taken a very firm stand on the issue of equity in mathematics education. Not only is equity incorporated in the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989) and Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (2000), equity is the first plank of NCTM’s legislative platform.

There are two police cars located in the area. Car C is at (2,1) and car D is at (-1,-1). Which car should be sent? Second there are three high schools in Ideal city. Roosevelt at (2,1), Franklin at ( -3,-3) and Jefferson at (-6,-1). Draw in school district boundaries so that each student in Ideal City attends the school closet to them. For the third …

Planetary Wave Activity Observed In Polar Mesospheric Clouds, David A. Mackler Apr 2005

Planetary Wave Activity Observed In Polar Mesospheric Clouds, David A. Mackler

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

In this paper, the Solar Backscatter UV spectrometer (SBUV) Polar Mesospheric Cloud (PMC) dataset was investigated for planetary wave activity following the earlier study by Merkel [2002]. To counter the sparse nature of the data, four separate methods of analysis are used in determining if planetary waves are present and how they effect PMC formation. The four methods are histograms (both in frequency of occurrence and mean albedo), periodograms using the Lomb-Scargle method, frequency-wavenumber analysis using a 2D Lomb-Scargle method from Wu et. al [1995], and a temporal (yearly) analysis of the 5, 6.5, and 10 day wave amplitudes. The …

A Topological Representation Theorem For Oriented Matroids, Jürgen Bokowski, Simon King, Sussane Mock, Ileana Streinu Apr 2005

A Topological Representation Theorem For Oriented Matroids, Jürgen Bokowski, Simon King, Sussane Mock, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We present a new direct proof of a topological representation theorem for oriented matroids in the general rank case. Our proof is based on an earlier rank 3 version. It uses hyperline sequences and the generalized Schönflies theorem. As an application, we show that one can read off oriented matroids from arrangements of embedded spheres of codimension one, even if wild spheres are involved.

GRB 040403 is one of the faintest gamma-ray bursts for which a rapid and accurate localization has been obtained. Here we report on the gamma-ray properties of this burst, based on observations with the IBIS instrument aboard INTEGRAL, and the results of searches for its optical afterglow. The steep spectrum (power law photon index =1.9 in the 20–200 keV range) implies that GRB 040403 is most likely an X-ray rich burst. Our optical limit of R >24.2 at 16.5 h after the burst, indicates a rather faint afterglow, similar to those seen in other relatively soft and faint bursts.

A Numerical Method For Obtaining An Optimal Temperature Distribution In A 3d Triple-Layered Cylindrical Skin Structure, Le Zhang Apr 2005

A Numerical Method For Obtaining An Optimal Temperature Distribution In A 3d Triple-Layered Cylindrical Skin Structure, Le Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

In recent years, it has been interesting to research hyperthermia combined with radiation and cytotoxic drugs to enhance the killing of tumors. The crucial problem is that when heating the tumor tissues, one needs to keep the surrounding normal tissue below a temperature that will produce harm. Thus, it is important to obtain the temperature field of the entire treatment region. The objective of this dissertation is to develop a numerical model for obtaining an optimal temperature distribution in a 3D triple-layered cylindrical skin structure. To this end, we pre-specify the temperatures to be obtained at the center and perimeter …

Rocket Borne Measurements Of A Near-Infrared Vehicle Induced Emission With A Newly Designed Spectrograph, Damon Burke Apr 2005

Rocket Borne Measurements Of A Near-Infrared Vehicle Induced Emission With A Newly Designed Spectrograph, Damon Burke

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

In order to broaden current knowledge of a particular vehicle induced atmospheric glow, a modified Ebert-Fastie Spectrograph was designed and built at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University for rocket borne observations of this glow. This instrument became a piggy-back payload on the Terrier-Orion SAMPLER 41.025 rocket payload launched from White Sands Missile Range in July, 2003. A photodiode detector array measured the mesospheric hydroxyl airglow emissions during the initial ascent as well as the vehicle induced glow through the mesopause at eight discreet bandpasses. Data collected shows moderate agreement with previous measurements by Murtagh et al. [1997] and Lopez-Moreno et al. [1985] …

A Measure Of The Hurst Exponent Variability On Ground Based Magnetometer Data For Quiet And Active Magnetospheric Periods, Dario O. Cersosimo Apr 2005

A Measure Of The Hurst Exponent Variability On Ground Based Magnetometer Data For Quiet And Active Magnetospheric Periods, Dario O. Cersosimo

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Ground-based magnetometer data were analyzed for the period of 1991-2001. The data were classified into periods of quiet and active magnetospheric activity. Those periods classified as quiet required that Kp < 1 for not less than 48 consecutive hours and active periods required a Kp > 4 for not less than 24 consecutive hours. Detrended fluctuation analysis was employed to analyze 40 events. A monofractal approach was used to identify differences in the Hurst exponent of quiet and active events. No statistical differences were found using this approach since both types of events displayed quasirandom walk behavior. A second approach determined the temporal variations in the Hurst exponent for each event. The Hurst exponent is temporally …

Rocket-Borne Instrument Design To Observe Peak Oh Meinel Band Vibrational Emission Profiles, Joshua T. Bryson Apr 2005

Rocket-Borne Instrument Design To Observe Peak Oh Meinel Band Vibrational Emission Profiles, Joshua T. Bryson

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The effects of density-dependent molecular quenching produce a unique, altitude dependent emission profile of the vibrational emission band for each OH v' value in the mesosphere. Previous rocket flights using broad band sensors have been able to detect a 1-2 km altitude gap between the peak emissions of Av6. An instrument design is presented which will directly measure the individual peak OH vibrational emission altitudes for the v' = 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 transitions radiating from the mesosphere. This high altitude resolution altitude profile information will enhance the ability to observe vertical propagation of atmospheric gravity waves …

Correlation And Causes Of Fifth Order Cycles Within The Upper Cretaceous Eagle Formation, Bighorn Basin Of Wyoming, Kimberly Ann Johnson

OES Theses and Dissertations

Cyclic stratification was examined in the Upper Cretaceous (Santonian-Campanian) section (Eagle Formation) within the Bighorn Basin of Wyoming. Of particular concern was the 103 to 104 year band, which in marine settings has been attributed to orbital forcing (Milankovitch cyclicity). A series of 19 sections were measured through the Virgelle Member of the Eagle Formation. Most were measured on the “J”-shaped escarpment that constitutes the nose and north flank of the Thermopolis anticline. Several others were measured at sites up to 30 km to the northwest along paleo-shoreline. In the study, detailed thickness data of all sections and …

Lightweight Federation Of Non-Cooperating Digital Libraries, Rong Shi Apr 2005

Lightweight Federation Of Non-Cooperating Digital Libraries, Rong Shi

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation studies the challenges and issues faced in federating heterogeneous digital libraries (DLs). The objective of this research is to demonstrate the feasibility of interoperability among non-cooperating DLs by presenting a lightweight, data driven approach, or Data Centered Interoperability (DCI). We build a Lightweight Federated Digital Library (LFDL) system to provide federated search service for existing digital libraries with no prior coordination.

We describe the motivation, architecture, design and implementation of the LFDL. We develop, deploy, and evaluate key services of the federation. The major difference to existing DL interoperability approaches is one where we do not insist on …

Programmable Process Flow Networks, Filip D. Cuckov Apr 2005

Programmable Process Flow Networks, Filip D. Cuckov

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A model that introduces programmability to processes occurring in a cargo terminal simulation through the use of a process language is presented in this thesis. The model provides a means for a straight-forward definition, and redefinition of changing processes, their incorporation in the simulation architecture and efficient execution. The model was built to investigate a solution for transforming the cargo terminal simulation CPortS into a process-oriented simulation without hard-coded processes. The approach taken separates the system into an architecture and a set of processes which utilize and interact with the architecture's resources and infrastructure. The processes that take place within …

Creating Software [Sic] Environments On An M-Node Beowulf Cluster To Execute Discrete-Event Simulations, Jermaine Fitz-Gerald Headley Apr 2005

Creating Software [Sic] Environments On An M-Node Beowulf Cluster To Execute Discrete-Event Simulations, Jermaine Fitz-Gerald Headley

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis describes the development of a software tool that facilitates the creation of software environments that make a simulation tool execute k replications of an application program on several nodes of an M-node Beowulf cluster. It is assumed that each cluster-node consists of p processors. The p processors that are contained in the master cluster-node are termed master processors, and the p processors that are contained in a slave cluster-node are termed slave processors. The slave processors are used to execute the replications, while the master processors are dedicated to schedule the replications and process other housekeeping chores. For …

Statistical Analysis Of Longitudinal And Multivariate Discrete Data, Deepak Mav Apr 2005

Statistical Analysis Of Longitudinal And Multivariate Discrete Data, Deepak Mav

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Correlated multivariate Poisson and binary variables occur naturally in medical, biological and epidemiological longitudinal studies. Modeling and simulating such variables is difficult because the correlations are restricted by the marginal means via Fréchet bounds in a complicated way. In this dissertation we will first discuss partially specified models and methods for estimating the regression and correlation parameters. We derive the asymptotic distributions of these parameter estimates. Using simulations based on extensions of the algorithm due to Sim (1993, Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, 47, pp. 1–10), we study the performance of these estimates using infeasibility, coverage probabilities of the …

The Straggling Green's Function Method For Ion Transport, Steven Andrew Walker Apr 2005

The Straggling Green's Function Method For Ion Transport, Steven Andrew Walker

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

For many years work has been conducted on developing a concise theory and method for HZE ion transport capable of being validated in the laboratory. Previous attempts have ignored dispersion and energy downshift associated with nuclear fragmentation and energy and range straggling. Here we present a Green's function approach to ion transport that incorporates these missing elements. This work forms the basis for a new version of GRNTRN, a Green's function transport code. Comparisons of GRNTRN predictions and laboratory results for an 56Fe ion beam with average energy at the target of one GeV/amu or more are presented for …

How To Choose One-Dimensional Basis Functions So That A Very Efficient Multidimensional Basis May Be Extracted From A Direct Product Of The One-Dimensional Functions: Energy Levels Of Coupled Systems With As Many As 16 Coordinates, Richard Dawes, Tucker Carrington Jr. Apr 2005

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we propose a scheme for choosing basis functions for quantum dynamics calculations. Direct product bases are frequently used. The number of direct product functions required to converge a spectrum, compute a rate constant, etc., is so large that direct product calculations are impossible for molecules or reacting systems with more than four atoms. It is common to extract a smaller working basis from a huge direct product basis by removing some of the product functions. We advocate a build and prune strategy of this type. the one-dimensional (1D) functions from which we build the direct product basis …
