Evaluating Online Trust Using Machine Learning Methods, Weihua Song Apr 2005

Evaluating Online Trust Using Machine Learning Methods, Weihua Song

Doctoral Dissertations

Trust plays an important role in e-commerce, P2P networks, and information filtering. Current challenges in trust evaluations include: (1) fnding trustworthy recommenders, (2) aggregating heterogeneous trust recommendations of different trust standards based on correlated observations and different evaluation processes, and (3) managing efficiently large trust systems where users may be sparsely connected and have multiple local reputations. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide solutions to these three challenges by applying ordered depth-first search, neural network, and hidden Markov model techniques. It designs an opinion filtered recommendation trust model to derive personal trust from heterogeneous recommendations; develops a reputation …

The Bipartite Clique: A Topological Paradigm For Web User Search Customization And Web Site Restructuring, Brenda F. Choyce-Miles Apr 2005

The Bipartite Clique: A Topological Paradigm For Web User Search Customization And Web Site Restructuring, Brenda F. Choyce-Miles

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation research is to aid the Web user to achieve his search objective at a host Web site by organizing a strongly connected neighborhood of Web pages that are thematically and spatially related to the user's search interest. Therefore, methods were developed to (1) find all Web pages at a given Web site that are thematically similar to a user's initial choice of a Web page (selected from the set of Web pages returned in response to a query by any popular search engine), and (2) organize these pages hierarchically in terms of their relevance to …

Integrated Modeling And Parallel Computation Of Laser-Induced Axisymmetric Rod Growth, Hong Lan Apr 2005

Integrated Modeling And Parallel Computation Of Laser-Induced Axisymmetric Rod Growth, Hong Lan

Doctoral Dissertations

To fully investigate a pyrolytic Laser-induced chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) system for growing an axisymmetric rod, a novel integrated three-dimensional mathematical model was developed not only to describe the heat transport in the deposit and substrate, but also to simulate the gas-phase in the heated reaction zone and its effect on growth rate. The integrated model consists of three components: the substrate, rod, and gas-phase domains. Each component is a separate model and the three components are dynamically integrated into one model for simulating the iterative and complex process of rod deposition.

The gas-phase reaction is modeled by the gas-phase …

Measuring Wireless Network Usage With The Experience Sampling Method, Tristan Henderson, Denise Anthony, David Kotz Apr 2005

Measuring Wireless Network Usage With The Experience Sampling Method, Tristan Henderson, Denise Anthony, David Kotz

Dartmouth Scholarship

Measuring wireless local area networks has proven useful for characterizing, modeling and provisioning these networks. These measurements are typically taken passively from a vantage point on the network itself. Client devices, or users, are never actively queried. These measurements can indicate \em what is happening on the network, but it can be difficult to infer \em why a particular behavior is occurring. In this paper we use the Experience Sampling Method (ESM) to study wireless network users. We monitored 29 users remotely for one week, and signaled them to fill out a questionnaire whenever interesting wireless behavior was observed. We …

Actions Of Sl(N,Z) On Homology Spheres, Kamlesh Parwani Apr 2005

Actions Of Sl(N,Z) On Homology Spheres, Kamlesh Parwani

Kamlesh Parwani

Any continuous action of SL(n,Z), where n > 2, on a r-dimensional mod 2 homology sphere factors through a finite group action if r < n - 1. In particular, any continuous action of SL(n+2,Z) on the n-dimensional sphere factors through a finite group action.

Predictive Neural Networks For Gene Expression Data Analysis, Ah-Hwee Tan, Hong Pan Apr 2005

Predictive Neural Networks For Gene Expression Data Analysis, Ah-Hwee Tan, Hong Pan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Gene expression data generated by DNA microarray experiments have provided a vast resource for medical diagnosis and disease understanding. Most prior work in analyzing gene expression data, however, focuses on predictive performance but not so much on deriving human understandable knowledge. This paper presents a systematic approach for learning and extracting rule-based knowledge from gene expression data. A class of predictive self-organizing networks known as Adaptive Resonance Associative Map (ARAM) is used for modelling gene expression data, whose learned knowledge can be transformed into a set of symbolic IF-THEN rules for interpretation. For dimensionality reduction, we illustrate how the system …

Mining Social Network From Spatio-Temporal Events, Hady Wirawan Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Teck Tim Tan, Hwee Hwa Pang Apr 2005

Mining Social Network From Spatio-Temporal Events, Hady Wirawan Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Teck Tim Tan, Hwee Hwa Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Knowing patterns of relationship in a social network is very useful for law enforcement agencies to investigate collaborations among criminals, for businesses to exploit relationships to sell products, or for individuals who wish to network with others. After all, it is not just what you know, but also whom you know, that matters. However, finding out who is related to whom on a large scale is a complex problem. Asking every single individual would be impractical, given the huge number of individuals and the changing dynamics of relationships. Recent advancement in technology has allowed more data about activities of individuals …

Photometry Of Outer-Belt Objects, Gautham S. Narayan '05 Apr 2005

Photometry Of Outer-Belt Objects, Gautham S. Narayan '05

Honors Projects

We present results from multi-wavelength observations of outer-belt asteroid 279 Thule and comet C12002 CE10 (LINEAR). The orbital elements of the second object, formerly classified as asteroid 2002 CE10, at first led to its identification with a group of asteroids called the Damocloids. The Damocloids' orbits are similar to Halley family comets (HFCs), and there is suspicion that the Damocloids are inactive HFC nuclei. Following observations by the 8.2 m Japanese Subaru telescope in August 2003, which determined that 2002 CE IO had a characteristic tail (Takato et al; 2003), it was re-classified as comet C/2002 CE10 (LINEAR). We observed …

Seasonal Variability In Trace Metal Speciation And Vertical Redox Stratification Of Freshwater Lake And Marsh Sediments In The Kalamzoo River Watershed (Mi, Usa), Noah Tumusiime Ndenga Apr 2005

Seasonal Variability In Trace Metal Speciation And Vertical Redox Stratification Of Freshwater Lake And Marsh Sediments In The Kalamzoo River Watershed (Mi, Usa), Noah Tumusiime Ndenga

Masters Theses

This research was aimed at: 1) quantifying redox-sensitive parameters in order to study redox stratification of the upper freshwater sediments at Asylum Lake and Kleinstuck Marsh, 2) quantifying the speciation of metals (e.g., Pb, Mn, Fe, Cr, Cu, Zn, Co and Cd), particularly with respect to their association with Fe and Mn (hydr)oxide phases, and 3) assessing changes in redox stratification and metal speciation as a function of season in the sediments. Both the solid phase and sediment pore waters were collected to a depth of ~50cm. Pore waters were analyzed for redox-sensitive species and the sediment solid phase was …

Spectroscopic Studies On Cobalt(Ii)-Substituted Metallo-Β-Lactamase Imis From Aeromonas Veronii Bv. Sobria, Patrick A. Crawford, Ke-Wu Yang, Narayan Sharma, Brian Bennett, Michael W. Crowder

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

In an effort to probe the structure of a group Bb metallo-β-lactamase, Co(II)-substituted ImiS was prepared and characterized by electronic absorption, NMR, and EPR spectroscopies. ImiS containing 1 equiv of Co(II) (Co(II)1-ImiS) was shown to be catalytically active. Electronic absorption studies of Co(II)1-ImiS revealed the presence of two distinct features:  (1) an intense sulfur to Co(II) ligand to metal charge transfer band and (2) less intense, Co(II) ligand field transitions that suggest 4-coordinate Co(II) in Co(II)1-ImiS. 1H NMR studies of Co(II)1-ImiS suggest that one histidine, one aspartic acid, and one cysteine …

Structure Preserving Algorithms For Computing The Symplectic Singular Value Decom Position, Archara Chaiyakarn Apr 2005

Structure Preserving Algorithms For Computing The Symplectic Singular Value Decom Position, Archara Chaiyakarn

Dissertations

In this thesis we develop two types of structure preserving Jacobi algorithms for com puting the symplectic singular value decomposition of real symplectic matrices and complex symplectic matrices. Unlike general purpose algorithms, these algorithms produce symplectic structure in all factors of the singular value decomposition.

Our first algorithm uses the relation between the singular value decomposition and the polar decomposition to reduce the problem of finding the symplectic singular value decomposition to th a t of calculating the structured spectral decomposition of a doubly structured m atrix. A Jacobi-like m ethod is developed to compute this doubly structured spectral decomposition. …

Stratification And Domination In Graphs And Digraphs, Ralucca M. Gera Apr 2005

Stratification And Domination In Graphs And Digraphs, Ralucca M. Gera

Dissertations

In this thesis we combine the idea of stratification with the one of domination in graphs and digraphs, respectively.

A graph is 2-stratified if its vertex set is partitioned into two classes, where the vertices in one class are colored red and those in the other class are colored blue. Let F be a 2-stratified graph rooted at some blue vertex v . An F -coloring of a graph G is a red-blue coloring of the vertices of G in which every blue vertexu belongs to a copy of F rooted at u . The F -domination number γ …

Nebraska Catfish Anglers: Descriptions And Insights Derived From The 2002 Nebraska Licensed Angler Survey, Keith Hurley, Kristin Duppong-Hurley Apr 2005

Nebraska Catfish Anglers: Descriptions And Insights Derived From The 2002 Nebraska Licensed Angler Survey, Keith Hurley, Kristin Duppong-Hurley

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Analyses in this report will refer to number of different groups. Catfish seeking anglers are defined as any angler who has spend at least 1 trip during 2002 in pursuit of a catfish species (channel, blue, flathead, or bullhead). This is the most general group included in the analyses and is also the least avid group of anglers in regards to their relationship to catfish angling. Catfish anglers are defined as those respondents who identified a catfish species as the species they most prefer to target. Catfish anglers represent a smaller group of respondents with a higher avidity for catfish …

A Prototype Industrial Maintenance Software System To Apply A Proactive Approach To Equipment Failure, Arnold Ralph Persinger Apr 2005

A Prototype Industrial Maintenance Software System To Apply A Proactive Approach To Equipment Failure, Arnold Ralph Persinger

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This project proposes a technical solution to create a proactive approach to industrial equipment maintenance for a large paper manufacturing facility. The traditional method for scheduling maintenance on manufacturing equipment uses a reactive approach. Reactive maintenance essentially means to perform repairs on equipment after failure has occurred; the process of these repairs begins by acquiring needed replacement part(s) utilizing a SAP (Systems Applications Products) system for authorization and ordering. Actual repairs are carried out by craftsmen based on their general knowledge of a specific trade and any previous experience concerning the failed equipment. The part(s) order through the SAP system …

Fisheries Research Report No. 149 - The Western Rock Lobster Fishery 2001/2002 To 2002/2003, C F. Chubb, E H. Barker

Fisheries research reports

Season 2001/2002 produced 8,983 tonnes, a far cry from last season’s catch of 11,300 t. The sharp decline in catch was most likely the result of unfavourable environmental conditions throughout much of the season. The catches by the three zones were 1,651 tonnes in zone A, 2,800 tonnes in zone B and 4,532 tonnes in zone C. The sharp decline in total catch on the previous season was also reflected in declining catches in the three zones. Nominal effort also declined slightly from 10.487 million pot lifts in 2000/2001 to 10.367 million pot lifts in 2001/2002. Following the very low …

Copper Exchange Studies Between The First And Fourth N-Terminal Metal-Binding Domains Of Wilson Disease Atpase, Jennifer Bunce Apr 2005

Copper Exchange Studies Between The First And Fourth N-Terminal Metal-Binding Domains Of Wilson Disease Atpase, Jennifer Bunce

Masters Theses

The human copper-transporting ATPase Wilson's disease protein was one of the first proteins shown to be actively involved in cellular copper homeostasis. The protein includes six N-terminal metal binding domains. The individual capabilities of the domains to bind and transfer copper are not yet fully understood. Each metal-binding domain is about 72 amino acid residues long and contains the conserved binding motif GMTCXXC, of which the cysteines are involved in the copper coordination. Studies have shown that the protein binds six copper atoms suggesting the potential involvement of each metal-binding domain. Separate functional roles for the latter domains have been …
