In this note we show that almost sure convergence to zero of symmetrized U-statistics indexed by a linear sector in ℤd+ is equivalent to convergence along the diagonal of ℤd+, as it is considered in Latała and Zinn [Ann. Probab. 28 (2000) 1908–1924]. Comparisons with similar results for sums of multi-indexed i.i.d. random variables are also made.

Doubly Differential Cross Sections For Single And Multiple Ionization Of Ne By Electron Impact, Antonio C. Santos, Ahmad Hasan, Robert D. Dubois Mar 2005

Doubly Differential Cross Sections For Single And Multiple Ionization Of Ne By Electron Impact, Antonio C. Santos, Ahmad Hasan, Robert D. Dubois

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present doubly differential cross sections for single and multiple ionization of the outer shell of neon by 750 eV electron impact. The distinction between single and multiple ionization was achieved by performing a charge state analysis of the recoil ions in coincidence with forward scattered, energy analyzed electrons. By a comparison to photon impact data, the contribution of the second-order double ionization mechanism is estimated and found to be neglible at this impact energy. Following a similar procedure adopted by J. A. R. Samson [Phys. Rev. Lett. 65, 2861 (1990)], the importance of the first-order TS-1 double ionization mechanism …

Peter Dowben Publications

Poly[2-methoxy-5-(2’-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene-vinylene] (MEH-PPV) adopts a preferential orientation on indium tin oxide. Although the basic building block of this polymer provides a negligible overall point-group symmetry, the polymer MEH-PPV packs with sufficient order to exhibit band structure. The polymer is fragile with bond cleavage evident following both argon-ion impact and ultraviolet radiation, but annealing leads to the restoration of much of the bond order.

Self-Consistent Dynamic Models Of Steady Ionization Fronts. I. Weak-D And Weak-R Fronts, W. J. Henney, S. J. Arthur, R. J. R. Williams, Gary J. Ferland

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present a method for including steady state gas flows in the plasma physics code Cloudy, which was previously restricted to modeling static configurations. The numerical algorithms are described in detail, together with an example application to plane-parallel ionization-bounded H II regions. As well as providing the foundation for future applications to more complex flows, we find the following specific results regarding the effect of advection on ionization fronts in H II regions: (1) Significant direct effects of advection on the global emission properties occur only when the ionization parameter is lower than is typical for H II regions. For …

Factors Influencing Persistence Of White-Footed Mice, Brock R. Mcmillan, Glennis A. Kaufman, Donald W. Kaufman Mar 2005

Factors Influencing Persistence Of White-Footed Mice, Brock R. Mcmillan, Glennis A. Kaufman, Donald W. Kaufman

The Prairie Naturalist

We examined factors that potentially influenced persistence of the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) during 1981 to 1988 at Konza Prairie Biological Station, Kansas. We predicted that both abiotic (e.g., precipitation and temperature) and biotic (e.g., availability of food and density of conspecifics) factors would influence persisten~e of individuals at the study site. Persistence of individual white-footed mice on the study site differed among years and seasons. White-footed mice that were first captured in summer or in autumn persisted longer than those first captured in spring. Young females (less than 20 g) had greater persistence than young males, whereas …

Comparison Of Microclimate At Grassland Bird Nests With Different Substrates, Kimberly M. Suedkamp Wells, Samuel D. Fuhlendore Mar 2005

Comparison Of Microclimate At Grassland Bird Nests With Different Substrates, Kimberly M. Suedkamp Wells, Samuel D. Fuhlendore

The Prairie Naturalist

We compared the effects of two different nest placement strategies (shrubs vs. bunchgrasses) on microclimate conditions for grasshopper sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum) and lark sparrow (Chondestes grammacus) in Oklahoma. We predicted that the intensity and duration of extreme temperatures (greater than 39° C) and their variability would be reduced at shrub nests compared to bunchgrass nests. A verage maximum temperatures were similar at nests of grasshopper sparrow and lark sparrow, but confidence intervals were more variable and included biologically detrimental temperatures at grasshopper sparrow nests compared to lark sparrow nests. The proportion of time greater than 39° …

The Sooner State Bird Atlas: Review Of Oklahoma Breeding Bird Atlas, Dan L. Reinking, Editor, Timothy J. O'Connell

The Prairie Naturalist

In Oklahoma, forest meets prairie, prairie meets mesa, and throughout, our native ecosystems are shaped by human land use. Across this shifting mosaic of habitats, animals find food, raise young, and disperse to find other members of their species. Management for these species is best informed when it springs from a common baseline of knowledge about distributions across the entire management area. For birds, that baseline can be effectively established with a breeding bird atlas. ... In sum, the Oklahoma Breeding Bird Atlas presents timely information on a fascinating statewide avifauna in a clear and attractive package. The text is …

Lack Of Brown-Headed Cowbird Nest Parasitism In A Short Grass Region, Stephen L. Winter, Jack F. Cully Jr. Mar 2005

Lack Of Brown-Headed Cowbird Nest Parasitism In A Short Grass Region, Stephen L. Winter, Jack F. Cully Jr.

The Prairie Naturalist

While conducting field work in Morton County, southwestern Kansas and Baca County, southeastern Colorado, during the period 27 May to 2 July 1997, we found 36 nests of seven bird species. Nests were not searched for systematically, but were found coincidentally as data were collected along transects during research investigating the breeding bird and plant communities of black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies and noncolonized shortgrass prairie (Winter 1999).

Low densities of the brown-headed cowbird in our study region, which is characterized by a semi-arid climate, might be a consequence of host populations that exhibit extreme temporal and …

The Quintessential Companion For North American Birders: Review Of The Birdwatcher's Companion To North American Birdlife By Christopher W. Leahy, Lawrence Igl Mar 2005

The Quintessential Companion For North American Birders: Review Of The Birdwatcher's Companion To North American Birdlife By Christopher W. Leahy, Lawrence Igl

The Prairie Naturalist

The Birdwatcher's Companion was revised in 2004 under a new title, The Birdwatcher's Companion to North American Birdlire, and by a new publisher, Princeton University Press. This substantial work builds on Leahy's previous edition published in 1982. Hailed by the publisher as the quintessential, alphabetically arranged guide to North American birdlife, the new edition of The Birdwatcher's Companion is over 100 pages longer than the first edition, but, overall, the style and format have not changed much between the two editions. The Companion begins with a brief chapter in which the author describes how to use the book, how it …

Records Of The Eastern Red Bat On The Northern Front Range Of Colorado, Daniel J. Neubaum Mar 2005

Records Of The Eastern Red Bat On The Northern Front Range Of Colorado, Daniel J. Neubaum

The Prairie Naturalist

Although common in deciduous forest throughout the Midwest and east-central states, the eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis) is rare in Colorado (Armstrong et al. 1994, Fitzgerald et al. 1994). However, this species has the potential to extend its range because belts of eastern deciduous forest habitat have expanded across western prairies and reached the Front Range of Colorado over the last 100 years (Knopf 1986). The eastern red bat ranges from Canada southward across the United States to northeastern New Mexico with most records occurring east of the Continental Divide (Hall 1981, Shump and Shump 1982, Cryan 2003). …

Input Of Particulate Organic And Dissolved Inorganic Carbon From The Amazon To The Atlantic Ocean, Erm Druffel, Je Bauer, S Griffin

VIMS Articles

We report concentrations and isotope measurements (radiocarbon and stable carbon) of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and suspended particulate organic carbon (POC) in waters collected from the mouth of the Amazon River and the North Brazil Current. Samples were collected in November 1991, when the Amazon hydrograph was at its annual minimum and the North Brazil Current had retroflected into the equatorial North Atlantic. The DIC D 14 C results revealed postbomb carbon in river and ocean waters, with slightly higher values at the river mouth. The low DIC delta(13)C signature of the river end-member (-11%) demonstrates that about half of …

The Terwilliger Algebra Of An Almost-Bipartite P- And Q-Polynomial Association Scheme, John S. Caughman Iv, Mark S. Maclean, Paul M. Terwilliger

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Let Y denote a D-class symmetric association scheme with D≥3, and suppose Y is almost-bipartite P- and Q-polynomial. Let x denote a vertex of Y and let T=T(x) denote the corresponding Terwilliger algebra. We prove that any irreducible T-module W is both thin and dual thin in the sense of Terwilliger. We produce two bases for W and describe the action of T on these bases. We prove that the isomorphism class of W as a T-module is determined by two parameters, the dual endpoint and diameter of W. We find a recurrence which gives the multiplicities with which the …

Leveraging User-Session Data To Support Web Application Testing, Sebastian Elbaum, Gregg Rothermel, Srikanth Karre, Marc Fisher Ii

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Web applications are vital components of the global information infrastructure, and it is important to ensure their dependability. Many techniques and tools for validating Web applications have been created, but few of these have addressed the need to test Web application functionality and none have attempted to leverage data gathered in the operation of Web applications to assist with testing. In this paper, we present several techniques for using user session data gathered as users operate Web applications to help test those applications from a functional standpoint. We report results of an experiment comparing these new techniques to existing white-box …

We have used ISAJET and the JAS LCD fast simulation to explore the precision of Snowmass Point SPS1a selectron mass reconstruction for the Silicon Detector concept. Simulating collisions at E_cm = 1 TeV, we have found that most of the information constraining the selectron mass is carried in the forward (|cos(theta)| > 0.8) region. We have also found that, for a beam energy spread of 1% (conventional RF design), detector resolution limitations compromise the selectron mass reconstruction only in the forward region. However, for a beam energy spread of less than 0.2% (superconducting RF design), the detector resolution compromises the selectron …

Schwinger Pair Creation Of Kaluza-Klein Particles: Pair Creation Without Tunneling, Tamar Friedmann, Herman Verlinde Mar 2005

Schwinger Pair Creation Of Kaluza-Klein Particles: Pair Creation Without Tunneling, Tamar Friedmann, Herman Verlinde

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

We study Schwinger pair creation of charged Kaluza-Klein (KK) particles from a static KK electric field. We find that the gravitational backreaction of the electric field on the geometry—which is incorporated via the electric KK-Melvin solution—prevents the electrostatic potential from overcoming the rest mass of the KK particles, thus impeding the tunneling mechanism which is often thought of as responsible for the pair creation. However, we find that pair creation still occurs with a finite rate formally similar to the classic Schwinger result, but via an apparently different mechanism, involving a combination of the Unruh effect and vacuum polarization due …

Wildlife Population Monitoring: Some Practical Considerations, Gary W. Witmer Mar 2005

Wildlife Population Monitoring: Some Practical Considerations, Gary W. Witmer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The accurate estimation of wildlife population density is difficult and requires considerable investment of resources and time. Population indices are easier to obtain but are influenced by many unknowns and the relationships to actual population densities are usually unclear. Wildlife biologists, whether in the public or private sector, often find themselves in difficult situations where a resource manager or landowner wants good information, quickly, at low cost, and without clear objectives. In many situations, in addition to establishing clear objectives, a budget and timeframe, a biologist must understand and deal with the reality of many logistical concerns that will make …

Kno.e.sis Publications

Materials and Process Specifications are complex semi-structured documents containing numeric data, text, and images. This article describes a coarse-grain extraction technique to automatically reorganize and summarize spec content. Specifically, a strategy for semantic-markup, to capture content within a semantic ontology, relevant to semi-automatic extraction, has been developed and experimented with. The working prototypes were built in the context of Cohesia's existing software infrastructure, and use techniques from Information Extraction, XML technology, etc.

Divide-And-Approximate: A Novel Constraint Push Strategy For Iceberg Cube Mining, Ke Wang, Yuelong Jiang, Jeffrey Xu Yu, Guozhu Dong, Jiawei Han

Kno.e.sis Publications

The iceberg cube mining computes all cells v, corresponding to GROUP BY partitions, that satisfy a given constraint on aggregated behaviors of the tuples in a GROUP BY partition. The number of cells often is so large that the result cannot be realistically searched without pushing the constraint into the search. Previous works have pushed antimonotone and monotone constraints. However, many useful constraints are neither antimonotone nor monotone. We consider a general class of aggregate constraints of the form f(v)θσ, where f is an arithmetic function of SQL-like aggregates and θ is one of <, ≤, ≥, > . We propose a …

Relative Concentration Of Solid-Phase Sulfide Species In Marine Sediments Overlying Gas Hydrate Deposits: Recognition Of The Role Of Anaerobic Methane Oxidation In Authigenic Sulfide Formation, Matthew K. Thompson, Walter S. Borowski, Charles K. Paull, William Ussler Iii

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Sulfide mineralization in marine sediments occurs when dissolved sulfide, produced by sulfate reduction processes, combines with dissolved iron to form iron sulfide minerals. Sulfide can be produced by oxidation of organic matter or by anaerobic methane oxidation (AMO), which involves the co-consumption of sulfate and methane. The latter process seems especially important within gas hydrate terrains like that of theBlakeRidge(offshore southeasternUnited States), where appreciable amounts of methane diffuse upward to the base of the sulfate reduction zone, or sulfate-methane interface (SMI).

We examine the sediments of two piston cores collected over the Blake Ridge gas hydrate deposits by sequentially extracting …
