The Address Recalculation Pipeline is a hardware architecture designed to reduce the end-to-end latency suffered by immersive Head Mounted Display virtual reality systems. A demand driven rendering technique known as priority rendering was devised for use in conjunction with the address recalculation pipeline. Using this technique, different sections of a scene can be updated at different rates, resulting in reductions to the rendering load.Further reductions can potentially be achieved by allowing for the segmenting of large objects. The analysis of series of crop variety trials has a long history with the earliest approaches being based on ANOVA methods. Kempton (1984) discussed the inadequacies of this approach, summarized the alternatives available at that time and noted that all of these approaches could be classified as multiplicative models. This paper develops a scalable system design for the creation, and delivery over the Internet, of a realistic voice communication service for crowded virtual spaces. Examples of crowded spaces include virtual market places or battlefields in online games. A realistic crowded audio scene including spatial rendering of the voices of surrounding avatars is impractical to deliver over the Internet in a peer-to-peer manner due to access bandwidth limitations and cost. This work presents a novel method for image similarity measure, where a hand-drawn rough black and white sketch is compared with an existing data base of full color images (art works and photographs). The proposed system creates ambient intelligence in terms of the evaluation of nonprecise, easy to input sketched information. The system can then provide the user with options of either retrieving similar images in the database or ranking the quality of the sketch against a given standard, i.e., the original image model. This article evaluates network and server infrastructure requirements to support real-time flows associated with networked entertainment applications. These include the state information flow to update the status of the virtual environment and immersive communication flows such as voice, video, gesture, and haptics communication. The article demonstrates that scaling these applications to large geographical spreads of participants requires distribution of computation to meet the latency constraints of the applications. This latency-driven distribution of computation is essential even when there are no limitations on the availability of computational resources in one location. This paper focuses on metadata-based, multimedia resource representation and retrieval in a P2P environment as a means of universal multimedia access (UMA). The primary focus of the work is a P2P architecture, which uses MPEG-21 as standards based technique to dynamically adapt resources to various usage environments. This work presents a novel architecture of an intelligent video surveillance camera. It is embedded with automated scene analysis and object behavior detection, so that operators can monitor more venues relying on the system that provides immediate response to suspicious events. The developed camera turns passive video data recording systems into active collaborators with security operators leaving to them only high-level decision making, while automatically carrying out all monotonous work on continuous video monitoring. When there is no alarming activity inside a restricted area the camera automatically turns back to the whole view mode.

This work presents a study of three important issues of the color pixel classification approach to skin segmentation: color representation, color quantization, and classification algorithm. Our analysis of several representative color spaces using the Bayesian classifier with the histogram technique shows that skin segmentation based on color pixel classification is largely unaffected by the choice of the color space. However, segmentation performance degrades when only chrominance channels are used in classification. Furthermore, we find that color quantization can be as low as 64 bins per channel, although higher histogram sizes give better segmentation performance. The Bayesian classifier with the histogram …

For every prime power q = 3 (mod 8) we prove the existence of (q; x, 0, y, y)-partitions of GF(q) with q = x2 + 2y2 for some x, y, which are very useful for constructing SDS, T-matrices and Hadamard matrices. We discuss the transformations of (q; x, 0, y, y)-partitions and, by using the partitions, construct generalized cyclotomic classes which have properties similar to those of classical cyclotomic classes. Thus we provide a new construction for T-matrices of order q2.

The concept of the Shortest (or Minimum) Spanning Tree (SST)and Recursive SST (RSST) of an undirected weighted graph has been successfully applied in image segmentation and edge detection. This paper presents a divide-and-conquer approach for (R)SST based image segmentation in order to over-come the problem of high computational complexity associated with conventional graph algorithms. This paper compares three possible rendering models for the provision of Immersive Voice Communications (IVCs) in Distributed Virtual Environments (DVEs) such as multiplayer online games. The common aim of these three rendering models is to create a personalised auditory scene for each listening avatar, consisting of a mix of the surrounding avatars' voices, positioned according to their positions in the virtual world. Despite government initiatives, studies show that SME still fail to realise the benefits of e-commerce adoption. This paper extends existing research by showing that the barriers to e-commerce adoption can be grouped according to two distinct factors: the difficulty of implementing e-commerce and the unsuitability of e-commerce to the business. The paper also shows that the relative importance of these two factors is affected by membership/non-membership of a small business cluster.

Co3O4 has shown acceptable electrochemical properties as the anode material of Li secondary batteries. In detail, its capacity reached about 700 mAh/g, twice as high as graphite, and 93.4% of initial capacity was retained after 100 cycles. EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) analyses revealed that after the 1st cycle, the insertion or extraction of Li ions in Co3O4 can occur homogeneously and reversibly (randless-like behavior, homogeneous mixture: Co + Li2O (in the state of Li insertion), Co3O4 (in the state of Li extraction)). We report a new magnetoplasmon mode and a sound-like collective excitation in two-dimensional electronic systems under a weak magnetic field and a low-frequency electromagnetic radiation. The analysis is based on the exact time-dependent wave functions and the exact relation between response function with and without radiation. The new mode discovered here can be used as a generating mechanism of high-frequency radiation from a system whose characteristic energy is low.

Crystallographic, magnetic, and NMR properties of a NaxCoO2 single crystal with x≃1 are presented. We identify the stoichiometric Na1CoO2 phase, which is shown to be a nonmagnetic insulator, as expected for homogeneous planes of Co3+ ions with S=0. In addition, we present evidence that, because of slight average Na deficiency, chemical and electronic phase separation leads to a segregation of Na vacancies into the well-defined, magnetic, Na0.8CoO2 phase. The importance of phase separation is discussed in the context of magnetic order for x≃0.8 and the occurrence of a metal-insulator transition for x→1.

The only specific interactions that influence the crystal packing of the title compound, C15H17ClN4O2, are weak C-H...N and C-H...Cl hydrogen bonds, even though there is a possibility of, for example, pi-pi stacking or halogen bonding. The dihedral angle between the mean planes of the imidazole and benzene rings is 59.82 (5) degrees . The length of the C-N bond connecting the imidazole and piperidine fragments is correlated with the degree of pyramidalization of the piperidine N atom.

Annual bands of a Porites coral from the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, eastern Indian Ocean, were analysed by radiocarbon for 1955–1985 AD. A rapid oceanic response of the site to bomb 14C is found, with a maximum D14C value of 132% in 1975. This value is considerably higher than those for the northwestern Indian Ocean, suggesting that surface waters reaching Cocos are not derived from the Arabian Sea. Instead, D14C values for Cocos and those for Watamu (Kenya) agree well over most of the study interval, suggesting that the South Equatorial Current carries 14C-elevated water rather than 14C-depleted water westward across …

The climatic effects of historical volcanic eruptions are well documented in the literature. What are less certain however, are the effects of eruptions on more distant environments, particularly vegetation. Here we present sub-annual δ13C records from two high-resolution Irish oak (Quercus spp.) chronologies that span the Laki (Grímsvötn) 1783–84 and Tambora 1815 eruptions. In both instances, a significant depletion in δ13C is recorded within the trees following the eruption (∼1.8‰). The addition of N-(diphenylmethylene)glycinate esters (Ph2C=NCH2CO2R) to [60]fullerene under Bingel conditions gives [60]fullerenyldihydropyrroles and not methano[60]fullerenyl iminoesters [C60C(CO2R)(N=CPh2)] as previously reported. Unequivocal evidence for the structure of C60C(CO2Et)(N=CPh2) was provided by INADEQUATE NMR studies on 13C enriched material. New mechanistic details are proposed to account for the formation of [60]fullerenyldihydropyrroles and their reductive ring-opening reactions.

Intertidal encapsulated embryos may be synchronously exposed to many environmental stressors, but interactions between some of these factors remain poorly understood. Here, the effects of solar radiation and desiccation on embryonic mortality and developmental rates were assessed using laboratory and field experiments. Egg masses of 3 intertidal gastropod species were exposed for 72 h to combinations of spectral (full spectrum, UV-blocked, dark) and daily emersion treatments (control, 15, 30, 60 min). Siphonaria denticulata and Bembicium nanum embryos were expected to be tolerant to emersion and UVR as they are routinely deposited on exposed rock platforms. Beyond Yellowstone? Conservation And Indigenous Rights In Australia And Sweden, Michael Adams

Faced with the paradox of a large global increase in conservation reserves and a simultaneous global decrease in actual effective protection for biodiversity, conservation scientists and others are questioning established conservation theory and practice. Conservation is largely a ‘residual’ landuse, which often conflicts with another residual landuse, the remaining lands owned or accessed by Indigenous peoples. I argue that the Western conservation model has created this situation, and that engaging with Indigenous ways of relating to ‘nature’ could lead to improved outcomes.
