FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) guidelines do not currently exist for conducting and incorporating tsunami hazard assessments that reflect the substantial advances in tsunami research achieved in the last two decades; this conclusion is the result of two FEMA-sponsored workshops and the associated Tsunami Focused Study (Chowdhury et al., 2005). Therefore, as part of FEMA's Map Modernization Program, a Tsunami Pilot Study was carried out in the Seaside/Gearhart, Oregon, area to develop an improved Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard Assessment (PTHA) methodology and to provide recommendations for improved tsunami hazard assessment guidelines. This thesis examines quantum confined quasi-one-dimensional structures on silicon surfaces. An in situ prepared and hydrogenated Si(100)-(2x1) is investigated, on which a quasi-dimensional nanostructure is fabricated via scanning tunneling microscopy. Also, the feasibility of STM-based nanolithography on an ex situ hydrogenated Si(111)-(1x1) surface is explored. Using methods such as those discussed herein it is possible to create quasi one-dimensional semiconducting metallic nanowires as well as contact pads, useful for four point probe measurements at the nanoscale. Using a STM, dimer wide strips of hydrogen are removed from the passivated layer to reveal bare silicon surface bonds forming a nanowire approximately …

Microwave irradiation has gained in popularity in recent years since it has been found to accelerate various chemical reactions. Microwaves are generally considered to be more environmentally friendly than traditional methods for activating chemical reactions. An investigation into a microwave-enhanced, solventless Mannich condensation was performed. The efficiency of a standard household microwave was compared to that of an industrial microwave, with the industrial microwave proving to be more effective. The advantages of using microwave irradiation for a Mannich condensation include milder reaction conditions, the absence of solvent, less waste, and shorter reaction times. In this thesis, we analyze mean residual life (MRL) functions and unique “function domain sets” confidence intervals to identify important opportunities for improving quality of medium density fiberboard (MDF). We stress these tools have tremendous potential for many other forest products (e.g., various composites, natural woods), not just MDF.

These “function domain sets” confidence intervals can assess variation in quality where one MRL function dominates an industrial baseline. Assessments of the internal bond of MDF illuminate opportunities for helpful improvements, plus perform valid statistical comparisons of different types of MDF. This study investigates the effects of using a coherent video-case curriculum in a university methods course. In particular, three issues are addressed: (1) howthe use of a video-case curriculum affects the reflective stance of preservice teachers; (2) the extent to which a reflective stance developed while reflecting on other teachers' practice transfers to reflecting on one's own practice; and (3) how preservice teachers' reflective stance that is developed via sustained and focused reflection using a video-case curriculum compares to the reflective stance of peers who engaged in less sustained and focused reflection. The McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDV), Antarctica contains some of the few ice-free oases on the continent, and is one of the coldest, driest places on earth. Despite the harsh conditions, the MDV supports an abundance of biological communities within soil and aquatic systems. Bioavailable carbon is present in these systems in the form of ancient and modern sources. In this thesis we present the proof of a theorem by Nikolai Nikolski. This theorem leads to a more general theorem by Nikolski regarding zero free regions of the Riemann ζ-function. This theorem is an improvement on the theorems that Nyman and Beurling proved in the nineteen fifties. Nikolski’s approach uses, in addition to step function approximations introduced by Nyman, distance functions to give more flexibility, including possible numerical experiments. The introduction discusses the Riemann Hypothesis, which always surrounds any study of the Riemann ζ-function.

The diffusive motions of the Brønsted superacid, hydrogen fluoride, have been studied using quasielastic neutron scattering. Neutron and high energy X-ray diffraction measurements on the Lewis superacid, antimony pentafluoride, are presented along with the results of three applied data models. Finally, structural information was obtained for a 9:1 FSO3H:NH3 solution using neutron diffraction with isotopic substitution and nuclear magnetic resonance.

Data obtained during the April 26, 2000 MirEx experiment is used to infer the chemical mechanisms responsible for ultraviolet radiation observed to emanate from Russian spacecraft exhaust plumes in low Earth orbit. The principle objective of this experiment was to use the Mir Space Station instruments to study the plume collisional processes occurring in the rarified atmosphere of the far-field; at distances greater than one kilometer away from the spacecraft. Atmospheric oxygen concentrations may have dramatically fluctuated throughout the Phanerozoic. Because oxygen is critical to fire, major oxygen fluctuations may have significantly affected biomass burning occurrences, suggesting that wildfires would have been more prevalent at times of elevated oxygen. Fossil charcoal abundances in the geologic record qualitatively reflect this relationship. Land plants evolved by the late Silurian, and the earliest true forests evolved by the mid-Devonian, while oxygen levels were still low. Fuel accumulations and oxygen content probably did not reach sufficient levels to sustain burning until the late-Devonian. There are only one or two isolated examples of fossil charcoal …

A unified mathematical and computational framework for implementation of an adaptive discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element method (FEM) is developed using the symmetric interior penalty formulation to obtain numerical approximations to solutions of second and fourth order elliptic partial differential equations. The DG-FEM formulation implemented allows for h-adaptivity and has the capability to work with linear, quadratic, cubic, and quartic polynomials on triangular elements in two dimensions. This study was conducted to determine how the hydrospires in blastoids (the respiratory channels through which blastoids respire) change in shape and capacity during ontogeny. As the volume of a blastoid increases ontogenetically, the respiratory capacity of the hydrospires must increase to match the additional respiratory requirements. Ontogenetically, volume increases at a cubic rate, therefore the surface area of the respiratory structures should increase at a similar rate. Using transverse cross sections of the theca through an ontogenetic series in two species of the blastoid Pentremites, the surface area and volume of the hydrospires was quantified. Small coastal ponds containing photosynthetic microbial mat communities represent a potentially significant source of labile organic carbon within the McMurdoDryValleys, Antarctica. To distinguish coastal pond derived organic matter (CPDOM) from other sources of organic matter in the dry valleys, I investigated bulk organic carbon and nitrogen isotopic signatures and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiles of benthic microbial mats located at two sites, HjorthHillCoastand GarwoodValley. To have confidence in force measurements made with atomic force microscopes(AFMs), the spring constant of the AFM cantilevers should be known with good precision and accuracy, a topic not yet thoroughly treated in the literature. In this study, we compared the stiffnesses of uncoated tipless uniform rectangular silicon cantilevers among thermal, loading, and geometric calibration methods; loading was done against an artifact from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The exposure of children to environmental disamenities has emerged as a key policy concern in recent years, with some analysts and activists suggesting that minority children are disproportionately impacted. Utilizing a dataset that combines air toxics at the census tract level with school-based demographic and other information, this article indicates disparate exposures for students of color in California schools and suggests that there may be negative impacts on one measure of academic performance, even after controlling for other factors usually associated with test scores. OCR systems for printed documents typically require large numbers of font styles and character models to work well. When given an unseen font, performance degrades even in the absence of noise. In this paper, we perform OCR in an unsupervised fashion without using any character models by using a cryptogram decoding algorithm. We present results on real and artificial OCR data.

We demonstrate experimentally that bare solid surfaces with adsorbed organic molecules can orient liquid crystals after UV light irradiation. The detailed structure and behavior of the surface-adsorbed molecules are not important to the effect: just their UV light absorption should depend on their orientation. The only requirement to the solid substrates is their transparency to the UV light. The universal reason for the photoinduced anisotropy in such systems is that photons clean from the surface those molecules that absorb them most intensively. This is a kind of light rubbing resulting in the anisotropic ablation of the adsorbed material.

Nano-/micronecklaces with SiO2 beads in boron strings were synthesized by simply sublimating the desired powders in a sealed quartz tube at high temperature. The boron strings have a rectangular cross section with width varying from 80to1000nm while the SiO2 beads bear either spindle or spherical shape with a size ranging from 100nmto5μm. The spacing between the SiO2 beads is uniform in each boron string. Both the boron strings and the SiO2 beads are amorphous and free of defects. The supersaturated vapors of silicon and oxygen induced the SiO2 bead formation.

A volcanic signal observed in ice cores from both polar regions six years prior to Tambora is attributed to an unknown tropical eruption in 1809. Recovery of dacitic tephra from the 1809 horizon in a Yukon ice core ( Eclipse) that is chemically distinct from andesitic 1809 tephra found in Antarctic ice cores indicates a second eruption in the Northern Hemisphere at this time. Together with the similar magnitude and timing of the 1809 volcanic signal in the Arctic and Antarctic, this could suggest a large tropical eruption produced the sulfate and Antarctic tephra and a minor Northern Hemisphere eruption …
