Ten Ag+-selective ionophores have been characterized in terms of their potentiometric selectivities and complex formation constants in solvent polymeric membranes. The compounds with π-coordination show much weaker interactions than those with thioether or thiocarbamate groups as the coordinating sites. Long-term studies with the best ionophores show that the lower detection limit of the best Ag+ sensors can be maintained in the subnanomolar range for at least 1 month. The best ionophores have also been characterized in fluorescent microspheres. The so far best lower detection limits of 3 × 10−11 M (potentiometrically) and 2 × 10−11 …

Natural Organic Matter And Colloid-Facilitated Arsenic Transport And Transformation In Porous Soil Media, Zhangrong Chen Jul 2006

Natural Organic Matter And Colloid-Facilitated Arsenic Transport And Transformation In Porous Soil Media, Zhangrong Chen

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Prediction of arsenic transport and transformation in soil environment requires understanding the transport mechanisms and proper estimation of arsenic partitioning among all three phases in soil/aquifer systems: mobile colloids, mobile soil solution, and immobile soil solids. The primary purpose of this research is to study natural dissolved organic matter (DOM)/colloid-facilitated transport of arsenic and understand the role of soil derived carriers in the transport and transformation of both inorganic and organoarsenicals in soils.

DOM/colloid facilitated arsenic transport and transformation in porous soil media were investigated using a set of experimental approaches including batch experiment, equilibrium membrane dialysis experiment and column …

Direct Limits On The BS0 Oscillation Frequency, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report results of a study of the Bs0 oscillation frequency using a large sample of Bs0 semileptonic decays corresponding to approximately 1 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider in 2002–2006. The amplitude method gives a lower limit on the Bs0 oscillation frequency at 14.8 ps-1 at the 95% C.L. At Δms = 19 ps-1, the amplitude deviates from the hypothesis A= 0 (1) by 2.5 (1.6) standard deviations, corresponding to a two-sided C.L. of 1% (10%). A likelihood …

On The N-Body Problem, Zhifu Xie Jul 2006

On The N-Body Problem, Zhifu Xie

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, central configurations, regularization of Simultaneous binary collision, linear stability of Kepler orbits, and index theory for symplectic path are studied. The history of their study is summarized in section 1. Section 2 deals with the following problem: given a collinear configuration of 4 bodies, under what conditions is it possible to choose positive masses which make it central. It is always possible to choose three positive masses such that the given three positions with the masses form a central configuration. However, for an arbitrary configuration of 4 bodies, it is not always possible to find positive masses …

Knots Not For Naught, Sharleen Adrienne Roberts Jul 2006

Knots Not For Naught, Sharleen Adrienne Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this paper is to find the Homfly polynomial for each knot in a specific family of knots. This family of knots is generated from placing the Whitehead link into a solid torus, slicing the torus at a spot where the Whitehead has no crossings and then twisting the torus 360 degrees in either direction an integral number of times. Let L(n) denote the knot obtained by twisting the torus 360 degrees, n times. Note that n is an integer. Let the twists be towards the center of the torus for positive n and away from the center …

Preheating With Trilinear Interactions: Tachyonic Resonance, Jean-François Dufaux, Gary Felder, Lev Kofman, Marco Peloso, Dmitry Podolsky Jul 2006

Preheating With Trilinear Interactions: Tachyonic Resonance, Jean-François Dufaux, Gary Felder, Lev Kofman, Marco Peloso, Dmitry Podolsky

Physics: Faculty Publications

We investigate the effects of bosonic trilinear interactions in preheating after chaotic inflation. A trilinear interaction term allows for the complete decay of the massive inflaton particles, which is necessary for the transition to radiation domination. We found that typically the trilinear term is subdominant during early stages of preheating, but it actually amplifies parametric resonance driven by the four-legs interaction. In cases where the trilinear term does dominate during preheating, the process occurs through periodic tachyonic amplifications with resonance effects, which is so effective that preheating completes within a few inflaton oscillations. We develop an analytic theory of this …

A Flexible General Class Of Marginal And Conditional Random Intercept Models For Binary Outcomes Using Mixtures Of Normals, Brian Caffo, Ming-Wen An, Charles A. Rohde Jul 2006

A Flexible General Class Of Marginal And Conditional Random Intercept Models For Binary Outcomes Using Mixtures Of Normals, Brian Caffo, Ming-Wen An, Charles A. Rohde

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Random intercept models for binary data are useful tools for addressing between subject heterogeneity. Unlike linear models, the non-linearity of link functions used for binary data force a distinction between marginal and conditional interpretations. This distinction is blurred in probit models with a normally distributed random intercept because the resulting model implies a probit marginal link as well. That is, this model is closed in the sense that the distribution associated with the marginal and conditional link functions and the random effect distribution are all of the same family. In this manuscript we explore another family of random intercept models …

Patterns Of Scleractinian Health In Broward County, Florida, Melody J. White Jul 2006

Patterns Of Scleractinian Health In Broward County, Florida, Melody J. White

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

This study was survey of disease distribution and abundance relating to coral diseases present in Broward County. Data of the 1330 scleractinian coral individuals found, 88 showed signs of disease. 19 coral species, 3 diseases and bleaching were represented. Diseases affected 9 of the species. Bleaching was the most common disease noted in this survey, followed by dark spot, red band, and yellow band.

Disease distribution appears to be scattered on the reef system. No apparent patterns were found when grouped by reef or corridor locations. MDS cluster analysis revealed a clumping of disease, but this was not correlated with …

Local Url Resolution Protocol, Joseph Clark Ekstrom Jul 2006

Local Url Resolution Protocol, Joseph Clark Ekstrom

Theses and Dissertations

DOGMA is a resource management system designed to create a supercomputer like system from unused desktop computers. Scalability is one of the challenges faced by DOGMA because it uses a strict client/server architecture. Distributing large files over a client server architecture is problematic since available network bandwidth is limited. The Local URL Resolution Protocol(LURP) addresses this problem for environments where there are high node densities. LURP implements a locality aware Peer-to-Peer file distribution model to increase the speed of file distribution while reducing the overall network congestion.

A Microformatted Registry Alternative, Thomas R. Warne Jul 2006

A Microformatted Registry Alternative, Thomas R. Warne

Theses and Dissertations

To effectively use Web services, providers and consumers need to be connected by a registry. Several registry solutions exist today, including UDDI and WSIL. Also, many organizations simply use Web pages to list available Web services and their descriptions. This research describes a microformat for representing Web service description documents. These microformatted documents can be converted back to the original format for use by machines. They can also contain additional information, making them more useful to people. A registry, allowing indexing and searching of microformatted service descriptions, is also described. The benefits of this solution include: using existing standards; allowing …

Conjugacy Classes Of The Piecewise Linear Group, Matthew L. Housley Jul 2006

Conjugacy Classes Of The Piecewise Linear Group, Matthew L. Housley

Theses and Dissertations

The piecewise linear group is the set of all piecewise linear orientation preserving homeomorphisms from the interval to itself under the operation of composition. We present here a complete set of invariants to classify the conjugacy classes of this group. Our approach to this problem relies on the factorization of elements into elements having only a single breakpoint.

The Runge-Lenz vector is a constant of the motion in the Kepler problem. As a precursor to developing a ladder operator formalism for the H-atom's quantum mechanics, various relations concerning the Runge-Lenz vector are obtained.

The Combination Of Ecological And Case-Control Data, Sebastien Haneuse, Jon Wakefield Jul 2006

The Combination Of Ecological And Case-Control Data, Sebastien Haneuse, Jon Wakefield

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Ecological studies, in which data are available at the level of the group, rather than at the level of the individual, are susceptible to a range of biases due to their inability to characterize within-group variability in exposures and confounders. In order to overcome these biases, we propose a hybrid design in which ecological data are supplemented with a sample of individual-level case-control data. We develop the likelihood for this design and illustrate its benefits via simulation, both in bias reduction when compared to an ecological study, and in efficiency gains relative to a conventional case-control study. An interesting special …

Search For A Heavy Resonance Decaying Into A Z+ Jet Final State In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1:96 Tev Using The D0 Detector, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration Jul 2006

Search For A Heavy Resonance Decaying Into A Z+ Jet Final State In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1:96 Tev Using The D0 Detector, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We have searched for a heavy resonance decaying into a Z+ jet final state in pp̅ collisions at a center of mass energy of 1:96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider using the D0 detector. No indication for such a resonance was found in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 370 pb-1. We set upper limits on the cross section times branching fraction for heavy resonance production at the 95% C.L. as a function of the resonance mass and width. The limits are interpreted within the framework of a specific model of excited quark …

Anguilliform Larvae Collected Off North Carolina, Steve W. Ross, Tara L. Casazza, Andrea M. Quattrini, Kenneth J. Sulak

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The distinctive larval stage of eels (leptocephalus) facilitates dispersal through prolonged life in the open ocean. Leptocephali are abundant and diverse off North Carolina, yet data on distributions and biology are lacking. The water column (from surface to 1,293 m) was sampled in or near the Gulf Stream off Cape Hatteras, Cape Lookout, and Cape Fear, North Carolina during summer through fall of 1999–2005, and leptocephali were collected by neuston net, plankton net, Tucker trawl, and dip net. Additional samples were collected nearly monthly from a transect across southern Onslow Bay, North Carolina (from surface to 91 m) from April …

Topics On The Spectral Theory Of Automorphic Forms, Dustin David Belt

Theses and Dissertations

We study the analytic properties of the Eisenstein Series of $frac {1}{2}$-integral weight associated with the Hecke congruence subgroup $Gamma_0(4)$. Using these properties we obtain asymptotics for sums of certain Dirichlet $L$-series. We also obtain a formula reducing the study of Selberg's Eigenvalue Conjecture to the study of the nonvanishing of the Eisenstein Series $E(z,s)$ for Hecke congruence subgroups $Gamma_0(N)$ at $s=frac {1+i}{2}$.

Understanding Brigham Young University's Technology Teacher Education Program's Sucess In Attracting And Retaining Female Students, Katrina M. Cox

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to attempt to understand why Brigham Young University Technology Teacher Education program has attracted and retained a high number of females. This was done through a self-created survey composed of four forced responses, distributed among the Winter 2006 semester students. Likert-scale questions were outlined according to the five theoretical influences on women in technology, as established by Welty and Puck (2001) and two of the three relationships of academia, as established by Haynie III (1999), as well as three free response questions regarding retention and attraction within the major. Findings suggested strong positive polarity …

Permutation Methods In Relative Risk Regression Models, Wenyu Jiang, Jack Kalbfleisch Jul 2006

Permutation Methods In Relative Risk Regression Models, Wenyu Jiang, Jack Kalbfleisch

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In this paper, we develop a weighted permutation (WP) method to construct confidence intervals for regression parameters in relative risk regression models. The WP method is a generalized permutation approach. It constructs a resampled history which mimics the observed history for individuals under study. Inference procedures are based on studentized score statistics that are insensitive to the forms of the relative risk function. This makes the WP method appealing in the general framework of the relative risk regression model. First order accuracy of the WP method is established using the counting process approach with a partial likelihood filtration. A simulation …

Extreme Ground Motion Studies, John G. Anderson, James N. Brune, Amy J. Smiecinski, Raymond E. Keeler Jul 2006

Extreme Ground Motion Studies, John G. Anderson, James N. Brune, Amy J. Smiecinski, Raymond E. Keeler

Publications (YM)

This project consists of two separate investigations into extreme ground motions due to seismic events. First, it includes field studies of geological formations that should put an upper bound on extreme ground motions that have happened at the site of the formations. The locations are critically selected to provide the most effective constraints possible on the validity of the probabilistic seismic hazard analysis for Yucca Mountain. Second, this project surveys recorded ground motions from around the world, and aims to draw general conclusions from these as to the conditions where extreme ground motions are observed.

Inverting Color-Magnitude Diagrams To Access Precise Star Cluster Parameters: A Bayesian Approach, Ted Von Hippel, Et Al. Jul 2006

Inverting Color-Magnitude Diagrams To Access Precise Star Cluster Parameters: A Bayesian Approach, Ted Von Hippel, Et Al.

Publications

We demonstrate a new Bayesian technique to invert color-magnitude diagrams of main-sequence and white dwarf stars to reveal the underlying cluster properties of age, distance, metallicity, and line-of-sight absorption, as well as individual stellar masses. The advantages our technique has over traditional analyses of color-magnitude diagrams are objectivity, precision, and explicit dependence on prior knowledge of cluster parameters. Within the confines of a given set of often-used models of stellar evolution, a single mapping of initial to final masses, and white dwarf cooling, and assuming photometric errors that one could reasonably achieve with the Hubble Space Telescope, our technique …

The Synthesis And Testing Of Arenearylpyrimidylmethanes (Aapm) As Anti-Malarial Agents, N. R. Yepuri, R. Haritakul, R. Griffith, S. P. Leach, Paul A. Keller

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The anti-malarial activity of the arenearylpyrimidylmethane (AAPM) class of compounds emerged from database searching of a pharmacophore. A new 2 step synthesis of the AAPM scaffold is reported and subsequent substitution yielded a short synthesis of the lead anti-malarial compound. The presence of atropisomerism in this class of compounds is also reported for the first time.

Jumpstarting Phylogenetic Searches, Jesse Lewis Mecham Jul 2006

Jumpstarting Phylogenetic Searches, Jesse Lewis Mecham

Theses and Dissertations

Phylogenetic analysis is a central tool in studies of comparative genomics. When a new region of DNA is isolated and sequenced, researchers are often forced to throw away months of computation on an existing phylogeny of homologous sequences in order to incorporate this new sequence. The previously constructed trees are often discarded, and the researcher begins the search again from scratch. The jumpstarting algorithm uses trees from the prior search as a starting point for a new phylogenetic search. This technique drastically decreases search time for large data sets. This kind of analysis is necessary as researchers analyze tree of …

Improving Record Linkage Through Pedigrees, Burdette N. Pixton Jul 2006

Improving Record Linkage Through Pedigrees, Burdette N. Pixton

Theses and Dissertations

Record linkage, in a genealogical context, is the process of identifying individuals from multiple sources which refer to the same real-world entity. Current solutions focus on the individuals in question and on complex rules developed by human experts. Genealogical databases are highly-structured with relationships existing between the individuals and other instances. These relationships can be utilized and human involvement greatly minimized by using a filtered structured neural network. These neural networks, using traditional back-propagation methods, are biased in a way to make the network human readable. The results show an increase in precision and recall when pedigree data is available …

Dna-Templated Surface Alignment And Characterization Of Carbon Nanotubes., Huijun Xin Jul 2006

Dna-Templated Surface Alignment And Characterization Of Carbon Nanotubes., Huijun Xin

Theses and Dissertations

Carbon nanotubes are appealing materials for nanofabrication due to their unique properties and structures. However, for carbon nanotubes to be used in mass-fabricated devices, precise control of nanotube orientation and location on surfaces is critical. I have developed a technique to align single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on surfaces from a droplet of nanotube suspension under gas flow. Fluid motion studies indicate that alignment is likely due to circulation of SWNTs in the droplet. My work provides a facile method for generating oriented nanotubes for nanodevice applications. I have also devised an approach for localizing SWNTs onto 1-pyrenemethylamine-decorated DNA on surfaces. …
