In this course we will examine methods for defining syntax of languages and recognizing patterns: the syntax of languages can be defined using grammars and patterns accepted by finite state machines. Along with presenting the fundamentals of these two topics, the course will develop and investigate the relationships between language definition and pattern recognition. The text will be the third edition of Languages and Machines: An Introduction to the Theory of Computer Science.

In some areas of the world, soap is too expensive for many people to afford. For these people an alternative exists. They can make their own soap. In general, soap is made by the reaction of triglycerides and caustic soda. However, caustic soda, too, may be difficult to find or too expensive. The aim of this project is to develop a process for making soap from readily available agricultural and household waste materials, and other inexpensive chemicals. We have performed unconstrained search for low-lying structures of medium-sized silicon clusters Si31–Si40 and Si45, by means of the minimum-hopping global optimization method coupled with a density-functional based tight-binding model of silicon. Subsequent geometric optimization by using density-functional theory with the PBE, BLYP, and B3LYP functionals was carried out to determine the relative stability of various candidate low-lying silicon clusters obtained from the unconstrained search. The low-lying characteristics of these clusters can be affirmed by comparing the binding energies per atom of these clusters with previously determined lowest-energy clusters (Sin) in the size …

The wavelet deconvolution method WaveD using band-limited wavelets offers both theoretical and computational advantages over traditional compactly supported wavelets. The translation-invariant WaveD with a fast algorithm improves further. The twofold cross-validation method for choosing the threshold parameter and the finest resolution level in WaveD is introduced. The algorithm’s performance is compared with the fixed constant tuning and the default tuning in WaveD.

Increasingly, Increasingly, scientific studies yield functional data, in which the ideal units of observation are curves and the observed data consist of sets of curves that are sampled on a fine grid. We present new methodology that generalizes the linear mixed model to the functional mixed model framework, with model fitting done by using a Bayesian wavelet-based approach. This method is flexible, allowing functions of arbitrary formand the full range of fixed effects structures and between-curve covariance structures that are available in the mixed model framework. BACKGROUND: Little is known about longitudinal associations among measures of depression, mental and physical health, and quality of life (QOL). We followed 982 clinically depressed persons to determine which measures changed and whether the change was synchronous with change in depressive symptoms. METHODS: Data were from the Longitudinal Investigation of Depression Outcomes (LIDO). Depressive symptoms, physical and mental health, and quality of life were measured at baseline, 6 weeks, 3 months, and 9 months. Change in the measures was examined over time and for persons with different levels of change in depressive symptoms. RESULTS: On average, all of the measures …

High-temperature magnetic ordering in Mn2+- and Co2+-doped ZnO diluted magnetic semiconductors has been predicted theoretically and confirmed experimentally to have different charge-carrier requirements. This paper summarizes some of these experimental and theoretical results and relates the different carrier polarity requirements for 300 K ferromagnetism in Mn2+:ZnO and Co2+:ZnO to differences in the charge-transfer electronic structures of these two materials.

17 single crystals were identified by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and isolated from coarse massive haemo-ilmenite ore from South Rogaland, Norway. These were studied using the EBSD results, natural remanent magnetization (NRM), and anisotropy ofmagnetic susceptibility (AMS), to gain a better understanding of angular relationships between crystallographic axes and magnetic properties of haemo-ilmenite in relation to lamellar magnetism. Electron microprobe analyses gave the following average end-member compositions for ilmenite host: 21.1 per cent MgTiO3, 73.7 FeTiO3, 0.5 MnTiO3, 4.3 Fe2O3, 0.2 Cr2O3 and 0.3 V2O3; and for the coarsest (∼3 μm) haematite exsolution lamellae: 3.5 MgTiO3, 22.4 FeTiO3, 71.4 Fe2O3, …

In the 1930s, after only three years of scientific investigation at the University of Michigan Institute for Fisheries Research, cheap labor and government-sponsored conservation projects spearheaded by the Civilian Conservation Corps allowed the widespread adoption of in-stream structures throughout the United States. From the 1940s through the 1970s, designs of in-stream structures remained essentially unchanged, and their use continued. Despite a large investment in the construction of in-stream structures over these four decades, very few studies were undertaken to evaluate the impacts of the structures on the channel and its aquatic populations. We propose extending our understanding of self-efficacy by comparing self-efficacy with a related construct called metacognition. Metacognition involves the monitoring and control of one's thought processes and is often related, as is self-efficacy, to performance on a task. We develop an instrument that attempts to measure both self-efficacy and metacognition with respect to one's performance on a test covering declarative and procedural knowledge (knowing that, and knowing how) of DFDs and ERDs. With data collected from a sample of 124 students, we use partial least squares (PLS) to show that self-efficacy and metacognition are distinct yet related constructs. While self-efficacy …

In the Fall of 2003, an initiative to develop and install a wind turbine on the University of Rhode Islands Kingston Campus was proposed by an undergraduate student, Courtney Blodgett. To spearhead this initiative, the Renewable Energy Club (REC) was created and recognized by the Student Senate, and support was received by the URI Offices of the President and Provost. The University recognized the benefits of investing in a wind turbine both in terms of money spent on energy costs, and in promoting research in renewable energy. Aspernigrin A is a compound correlated with inhibiting the growth of cancer cells in the colon. A five-step synthesis was designed for aspernigrin A, projected to yield four intermediates and the final product. The intermediates were analyzed by high field 1HNMR and FT-IR spectroscopy before proceeding to the next step. A model pyridone ring system was successfully prepared from a commercially available pyrone precursor in two steps. These results provide a proof of concept that the synthetic scheme should successfully yield the natural product.

Simple and explicit expressions for the phase shifts that p- and s-polarized light experience in frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) and optical tunneling by an embedded low-index thin film are obtained. The differential phase shifts in reflection and transmission Δr,Δt are found to be identical, and the associated ellipsometric parameters ψr,ψt are governed by a simple relation, independent of film thickness. When the Fresnel interface reflection phase shifts for the pand s polarizations or their average are quarter-wave, the corresponding overall reflection phase shifts introduced by the embedded layer are also quarter-wave for all values of film …
