I started work at the Institute for Watershed Studies (IWS) in June of 2005. On my first day I incorrectly weighed out ammonium chloride thus making that a mistake I would never make again. Despite this hiccup, under the careful tutelage of my boss I have become proficient at a great many necessary skills. This report serves as a summary and description of what I have learned over the past year. I have experience in water quality procedures covering the processing and analyzing of samples.

Efficient indexing techniques have been developed for the exact and approximate substructure search in large scale graph databases. Unfortunately, the retrieval problem of structures with categorical or geometric distance constraints is not solved yet. In this paper, we develop a method called PIS (Partition-based Graph Index and Search) to support similarity search on substructures with superimposed distance constraints. PIS selects discriminative fragments in a query graph and uses an index to prune the graphs that violate the distance constraints. Competitive Effects Of Uranyl-Organic Complexes On U(Vi) Reduction By Shewanella Putrefaciens, Abraham M. Northup

Haas and DiChristina (2002) have demonstrated that Fe(III) reduction by the facultative Fe(III)-reducing bacterium S. putrefaciens is mediated by competitive speciation among dissolved organic ligands and functional groups on the cell surface. They also showed that rates of Fe(III) reduction by S. putrefaciens correlate with the thermodynamic stability constants of the Fe(III)-organic ligand complexes. S. putrefaciens can also use U(VI) as a terminal electron acceptor, coupling U(VI) reduction to growth. Forty-one rice cDNAs encoding protein kinases were fused to the tandem affinity purification (TAP) tag and expressed in transgenic rice plants. The TAP-tagged kinases and interacting proteins were purified from the T1 progeny of the transgenic rice plants and identified by mass spectrometry. Ninety-five percent of the TAP-tagged kinases were recovered. Fifty-six percent of the TAP-tagged kinases were found to interact with other rice proteins. A number of these interactions were consistent with known protein complexes found in other species, validating the TAP-tag method in rice plants. Analyzing clustering structures in data streams can provide critical information for making decision in real time. In this paper, we present a framework for detecting the change of critical clustering structure in categorical data streams. The framework consists of the Hierarchical Entropy Tree structure (HE-Tree) and the extended ACE clustering algorithm. HE-Tree can efficiently capture the entropy property of the categorical data streams and allow us to draw precise clustering information from the data stream for high-quality BkPLots with the extended ACE algorithm.

Synthesis of glyceride esters of a fatty acid produces a mixture of isomers that are difficult to separate and analyze, requiring high temperature GC in most cases particularly for long-chain esters. In this paper, we present a fast estimation of the composition of the glyceride esters of lauric acid and glycerol (monolaurin, dilaurin, and trilaurin) by FTIR band shape analysis. The method uses the fact that the carbonyl stretching regions of the pure glycerides have differentband shapes, which implies any composite band of a mixture of glycerides may be resolved into the component peaks due to each glyceride. Semi-leafless field pea like Kaspa have lifted the benchmark set by the previous conventional varieties such as Parafield and Dunwa. Semi-leafless field pea have the same traits as conventional field pea: adaptation to a range of soil types; wide selection of weed control options (including crop topping); nitrogen input; disease break; and reduction in root lesion nematodes. Semi-leafless pea is easier to harvest and is less prone to pod shatter.

This research gives methods for sequential monitoring of survival data in clinical trials with multiple endpoints. We illustrate the use of marginal proportional hazards models and other survival models with various group sequential methods to test multiple survival endpoints at K interim analyses. To adjust for multiplicity at each interim analysis, we consider and extend methods developed by Tang and Geller (1999), Follmann, et al. (1994), and others. These methods are motivated, compared, and evaluated using survival data from a clinical study and using simulation studies.

The preparation of 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives entailed ring opening reactions of 1,10-phenanthroline epoxide as a key transformation, affording novelbidentate nitrogen ligands with new stereogenic centers in the 5- and 6-position. This research was concerned with (i) the epoxidation of 1,10-phen, (ii) epoxide ring opening reactions, (iii) the formation of trans -5,6-disubstituted-1,10-phenanthroline metal complexes, and (iv) application of 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives in metal-catalyze reactions such as palladium-catalyzed allylic substitution and aminohalogenation reactions; Zinc-catalyzed direct aldolreaction, and acetophenone reduction; Nickel-catalyzed Michael addition reaction.

Antarctic bryophyte communities presently tolerate physiological extremes in water availability, surviving both desiccation and submergence events. This study investigated the relative ability of three Antarctic moss species to tolerate physiological extremes in water availability and identified physiological, morphological, and biochemical characteristics that assist species performance under such conditions. Tolerance of desiccation and submergence was investigated using chlorophyll fluorescence during a series of field- and laboratory-based water stress events. Turf water retention and degree of natural habitat submergence were determined from gametophyte shoot size and density and ?13C signatures respectively. Grape phylloxera is a root-feeding pest of grapevines. In Australia, phylloxera infested vineyards are subjected to quarantine restrictions and early detection remains vital for the timely implementation of post-outbreak quarantine protocols. Current detection methods rely on time-consuming ground surveying which involves detailed examination of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) root systems. Leaf pigment composition is often a sensitive indicator of plant stress. This dissertation investigates video encoding schemes for pervasive computing applications that must ensure low power consumption in addition to high compression efficiency. The contribution of the dissertation is the formulation of a theoretical problem that captures the joint optimization of power and distortion in video coding. The study of the complexity distribution of typical video encoders helps to develop a complexity-scalable video encoding architecture that includes several control parameters to adjust the power consumption of the major modules of the encoder.
