Magnetic And Transport Properties Of Nimnal Thin Films, Andriy Vovk, Minghui Yu, Leszek Malkinski, Charles O'Connor, Zhenjun Wang, Eden Durant, Jinke Tang, Vladimir Golub

Physics Faculty Publications

The magnetic and transport properties of Ni2MnAl thin films prepared using pulse laser deposition were investigated. It was shown that the films are granular and multiphase. Contrary to the data reported earlier we observe nonmonotonic temperature dependence of resistance with minimum in the vicinity of 100 K for the films deposited on substrates held at 773 K and negative magnetoresistance (MR) values of about 2.5% at 5 K and 1.6% at RT in magnetic field of 50 kOe. These values of MR are the highest reported up to date for Ni2MnAl films. Large negative MR in …

Aberration-Free Negative-Refractive-Index Lens, Jiajun Chen, Cosmin Radu, Ashok Puri Jan 2006

Aberration-Free Negative-Refractive-Index Lens, Jiajun Chen, Cosmin Radu, Ashok Puri

Physics Faculty Publications

The aberrations of a spherical lens composed of left-handed materials are studied in this letter. Five Seidel aberrations (spherical, coma, astigmatism, field curvature, and distortion) as a function of the refractive index n and shape factor q of the lens are considered. Our numerical calculations show that the negative refractive index gives much larger windows of small values of aberrations than the positive index, which will significantly enhance the flexibility for the design of an optical lens. Two possible regions with optimized aberrations are proposed: n = −1, q = −2.2 and n = −0.81 and q = 0.83

Horizontal Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetlands For On-Site Wastewater Treatment, Boyd C. Hoddinott Jan 2006

Horizontal Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetlands For On-Site Wastewater Treatment, Boyd C. Hoddinott

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (SSFCWs) are being used worldwide to treat wastewater from a variety of sources. An extensive literature review was conducted to update the current state of scientific knowledge on the performance of SSFCWs for domestic wastewater treatment. This review documented good treatment efficiency for the five commonly measured parameters (TSS, BOD, nitrogen, phosphorus, and fecal coliforms).

An attempt at a Meta analysis turned up a myriad of problems preventing a proper statistical review. These include lack of adherence to standard methods for effluent analysis, varying metrics for reporting treatment efficiency, variability in the nitrogen species which …

Typography Behind The Arabetic Calligraphy Veil, Saad D. Abulhab Jan 2006

Typography Behind The Arabetic Calligraphy Veil, Saad D. Abulhab

Publications and Research

In the change from scriptural writing systems to textual mechanical systems and most recently to digital, computer generated text, some languages and their typographic representations have suffered. One such language, along with its visible language representation, that has not made a smooth transition is Arabic. The author argues that misinterpreting language tradition prevents what he calls Arabetic typography from embracing an appropriate technological adaptation. Putting forth an evolutionary argument, he critiques the notion that calligraphic styles must prevail and that legibility and readability of Arabic characters is objective. He further states that the resulting typefaces when abandoning the so called …

Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Trimble County, Kentucky, Daniel I. Carey, Bart Davidson Jan 2006

Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Trimble County, Kentucky, Daniel I. Carey, Bart Davidson

Map and Chart--KGS

This map is not intended to be used for selecting individual sites. Its purpose is to inform land-use planners, government officials, and the public in a general way about geologic bedrock conditions that affect the selection of sites for various purposes. The properties of thick soils may supercede those of the underlying bedrock and should be considered on a site-to-site basis. At any site, it is important to understand the characteristics of both the soils and the underlying rock.

Spectral Analysis Of The Supreme Court, B Lawson, M Orrison, David Uminsky Jan 2006

Spectral Analysis Of The Supreme Court, B Lawson, M Orrison, David Uminsky

Mathematics

Should you decide that spectral analysis is worth looking into (as we hope to convince you), then you will be happy to know that there are efficient algorithms for doing spectral analysis. Perhaps more interestingly, at least from a mathematical perspective, these algorithms involve an intriguing mixture of ideas and techniques from linear algebra, abstract algebra, numerical analysis, and graph theory.

The focus of this paper is the linear algebraic framework in which the spectral analysis of voting data like that above is carried out. As we will show, this framework can be used to pinpoint voting coalitions in small …

Factors Controlling Structural And Floristic Variation Of Riparian Zones In A Mountainous Landscape Of The Western United States, A G. Merrill, Tracy Benning, J A. Fites Jan 2006

Factors Controlling Structural And Floristic Variation Of Riparian Zones In A Mountainous Landscape Of The Western United States, A G. Merrill, Tracy Benning, J A. Fites

Environmental Science

We examined landscape patterns in the physical conditions and vegetative composition of montane riparian zones to identify their most important sources of variation. Information on plant species cover and on physical characteristics that occur at coarse, medium, and fine scales was collected for 144 riparian plots located throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin, which straddles the California-Nevada border in the western United States. Constrained and unconstrained ordination analyses were used to identify the most important correlates of physical form and plant species composition. Through multivariate analysis of environmental variables (principal components analysis), vegetation data (detrended correspondence analysis), and the combined relationship …

Cooperation Mechanisms: A Shift Toward Policy Development Cooperation, Stephanie Ohshita Jan 2006

Cooperation Mechanisms: A Shift Toward Policy Development Cooperation, Stephanie Ohshita

Environmental Science

As humankind tries to address the climate change problem, we find the need to look upstream—to change the ways in which we use energy—and the need for more programmatic or systems-oriented approaches. To achieve significant energy savings, we need cooperation mechanisms that can spur widespread improvements in energy efficiency and conservation. These mechanisms must address large quantities of energy, have significant impact and induce lasting change. Project-based technology cooperation only gets us so far in that effort; only a limited number of projects can be conducted with public funds. To achieve widespread improvements, we need something more; we need policies …

Cooperation Structure: The Growing Role Of Independent Cooperation Networks, Stephanie Ohshita, S Wiel, G Heggelund Jan 2006

Cooperation Structure: The Growing Role Of Independent Cooperation Networks, Stephanie Ohshita, S Wiel, G Heggelund

Environmental Science

Existing cooperation on energy efficiency in East Asia involves a variety of organizations, from large multilateral institutions to small think-tanks and foundations. Cooperation mechanisms range from exchanges of experts and trainees, to the sharing of policy information at regional forums, to multi-million dollar technology installations. A variety of sectors have been targeted, from appliances to buildings to industry and electricity. Some cooperation efforts emphasize measurement of resulting energy savings, while others undertake less quantifiable routes to promoting energy conservation. Cooperation activity on energy efficiency has increased substantially over the past 10 to 15 years, yet those engaged in the cooperation …
