Probing Nanoscale Ferroelectricity By Ultraviolet Raman Spectroscopy, Dmitri Tenne, A. Bruchhausen, N. D. Lanzillotti-Kimura, A. Fainstein, R. S. Katiyar, A. Cantarero, A. Soukiassian

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We demonstrate that ultraviolet Raman spectroscopy is an effective technique to measure the transition temperature, Tc, accurately in ferroelectric ultrathin films and superlattices. We show that one-unit-cell thick BaTiO3 layers in BaTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices are not only ferroelectric (Tc as high as 250 K), but also polarize the quantum paraelectric SrTiO3 layers adjacent to them. Tc was tuned by ~ 500 K by varying the thicknesses of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 layers, revealing the essential roles of electrical and mechanical boundary conditions for nanoscale ferroelectricity.

Properties Of New York/New Jersey Harbor Sediments, K. W. Jones, Huan Feng, E. A. Stren, U. Neuhäusler, J. Osán, N. Marinkovic, Z. Song

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Sediments found in waterways around the world may contain toxic compounds of anthropogeilic origin that can harm the environment and human health. As a result, it is often necessary to remove them and find disposal methods that are environmentally and economically acceptable. Here, we report on results obtained in an experimental program to characterize the nature of the sediment contamination. The objective was to gain a better understanding of the properties of the sediments to develop better methods for understanding the fate and transport of the contaminants and for improving methods for their removal from the sediments. Our investigations made …

Wide-Field Kinematics Of Globular Clusters In The Leo I Group, G. Bergond, S. E. Zepf, Aaron J. Romanowsky, R. M. Sharples, K. L. Rhode

Aaron J. Romanowsky

We present wide-field spectroscopy of globular clusters around the Leo I group galaxies NGC 3379 and NGC 3384 using the FLAMES multi-fibre instrument at the VLT. We obtain accurate radial velocities for 42 globular clusters (GCs) in total, 30 for GCs around the elliptical NGC 3379, eight around the lenticular NGC 3384, and four which may be associated with either galaxy. These data are notable for their large radial range extending from 0$\farcm$7 to 14$\farcm$5 (2 to 42 kpc) from the centre of NGC 3379, and small velocity uncertainties of about 10 km s-1. We combine our sample of 30 …

Aaron J. Romanowsky

We present a catalogue of positions, magnitudes and velocities for 3300 emission-line objects found by the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph in a survey of the Andromeda galaxy, M31. Of these objects, 2615 are found likely to be planetary nebulae (PNe) associated with M31. The survey area covers the whole of M31's disc out to a radius of Graphic. Beyond this radius, observations have been made along the major and minor axes, and the Northern Spur and Southern Stream regions. The calibrated data have been checked for internal consistency and compared with other catalogues. With the exception of the very central, high …

Estimating Hydrodynamic Quantities In The Presence Of Microscopic Fluctuations, Alejandro Garcia Jan 2006

Estimating Hydrodynamic Quantities In The Presence Of Microscopic Fluctuations, Alejandro Garcia

Alejandro Garcia

This paper discusses the evaluation of hydrodynamic variables in the presence of spontaneous fluctuations, such as in molecular simulations of fluid flows. The principal point is that hydrodynamic variables such as fluid velocity and temperature must be defined in terms of mechanical variables such as momentum and energy density). Because these relations are nonlinear and because fluctuations of mechanical variables are correlated, care must be taken to avoid introducing a bias when evaluating means, variances, and correlations of hydrodynamic variables. The unbiased estimates are formulated; some alternative, incorrect approaches are presented as cautionary warnings. The expressions are verified by numerical …

Hydrodynamic Description Of The Adiabatic Piston, Alejandro Garcia, Malek M. Mansour Jan 2006

Hydrodynamic Description Of The Adiabatic Piston, Alejandro Garcia, Malek M. Mansour

Alejandro Garcia

A closed macroscopic equation for the motion of the two-dimensional adiabatic piston is derived from standard hydrodynamics. It predicts a damped oscillatory motion of the piston towards a final rest position, which depends on the initial state. In the limit of large piston mass, the solution of this equation is in quantitative agreement with the results obtained from both hard disk molecular dynamics and hydrodynamics. The explicit forms of the basic characteristics of the piston’s dynamics, such as the period of oscillations and the relaxation time, are derived. The limitations of the theory’s validity, in terms of the main system …

Planetary Nebula Velocities In The Disc And Bulge Of M31, C. Halliday, D. Carter, T. J. Bridges, Z. C. Jackson, M. I. Wilkinson, D. P. Quinn, N. W. Evans, N. G. Douglas, H. R. Merrett, Aaron J. Romanowsky, K. Kuijken, M. J. Irwin

Aaron J. Romanowsky

We present radial velocities for a sample of 723 planetary nebulae in the disc and bulge of M31, measured using the WYFFOS fibre spectrograph on the William Herschel Telescope. Velocities are determined using the [O III] λ5007 emission line. Rotation and velocity dispersion are measured to a radius of 50 arcmin (11.5 kpc), the first stellar rotation curve and velocity dispersion profile for M31 to such a radius. Our kinematics are consistent with rotational support at radii well beyond the bulge effective radius of 1.4 kpc, although our data beyond a radius of 5 kpc are limited. We present tentative …

The Araucaria Project. An Accurate Distance To Ngc 6822 From Near-Infrared Photometry Of Cepheid Variables, W. Gieren, G. Pietrzyński, K. Nalewajko, I. Soszyński, F. Bresolin, R.-P. Kudritzki, D. Minniti, Aaron J. Romanowsky Jan 2006

The Araucaria Project. An Accurate Distance To Ngc 6822 From Near-Infrared Photometry Of Cepheid Variables, W. Gieren, G. Pietrzyński, K. Nalewajko, I. Soszyński, F. Bresolin, R.-P. Kudritzki, D. Minniti, Aaron J. Romanowsky

Aaron J. Romanowsky

We have measured near-infrared magnitudes in the J and K bands for 56 Cepheid variables in the Local Group galaxy NGC 6822 with well-determined periods and optical light curves in the V and I bands. Using the template light-curve approach of Soszyński and coworkers, accurate mean magnitudes were obtained from these data, which allowed us to determine with unprecedented accuracy the distance to NGC 6822 from a multiwavelength period-luminosity solution in the VIJK bands. From our data, we obtain a distance to NGC 6822 of (m - M)0 = 23.312 ± 0.021 (random error) mag, with an additional systematic uncertainty …

Farnesylated Lamins, Progeroid Syndromes And Farnesyl Transferase Inhibitors, Michael Sinensky, A. E. Rusinol Jan 2006

Farnesylated Lamins, Progeroid Syndromes And Farnesyl Transferase Inhibitors, Michael Sinensky, A. E. Rusinol

Michael Sinensky

Three mammalian nuclear lamin proteins, lamin B1, lamin B2 and the lamin A precursor, prelamin A, undergo canonical farnesylation and processing at CAAX motifs. In the case of prelamin A, there is an additional farnesylation-dependent endoproteolysis, which is defective in two congenital diseases: Hutchinson-Gilford progeria (HGPS) and restrictive dermopathy (RD). These two diseases arise respectively from defects in the prelamin A substrate and the enzyme (ZmpSte24) that processes it. Recent work has shed light on the roles of the lamin proteins and the enzymes involved in their farnesylation-dependent maturation. Other experimental work, including mouse model studies, have examined the possibility …

Dna Damage Responses In Progeroid Syndromes Arise From Defective Maturation Of Prelamin A, Michael Sinensky, Y. Liu, A. Rusinol, Y. Wang, Y. Zou Jan 2006

Dna Damage Responses In Progeroid Syndromes Arise From Defective Maturation Of Prelamin A, Michael Sinensky, Y. Liu, A. Rusinol, Y. Wang, Y. Zou

Michael Sinensky

The genetic diseases Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) and restrictive dermopathy (RD) arise from accumulation of farnesylated prelamin A because of defects in the lamin A maturation pathway. Both of these diseases exhibit symptoms that can be viewed as accelerated aging. The mechanism by which accumulation of farnesylated prelamin A leads to these accelerated aging phenotypes is not understood. Here we present evidence that in HGPS and RD fibroblasts, DNA damage checkpoints are persistently activated because of the compromise in genomic integrity. Inactivation of checkpoint kinases Ataxia-telangiectasia-mutated (ATM) and ATR (ATM- and Rad3-related) in these patient cells can partially overcome their …

The Risk Of Public Data Availability On Critical Infrastructure Protection, Roba Abbas Jan 2006

The Risk Of Public Data Availability On Critical Infrastructure Protection, Roba Abbas

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper examines the threat of freely available information on critical infrastructure protection (CIP) efforts. Critical infrastructure are the services required to maintain the stability and security of a country, and comprise both physical and cyber infrastructures. These interdependent entities must be protected from natural disasters, accidental errors, and deliberate attacks. The CIP process typically includes vulnerability assessment, risk assessment and risk management, and has been a global concern for many years; the concern now amplified in Australia due to a number of recent events such the 9/11 attacks, and the Bali bombings. The events have called into question the …

Electronic Health Record System Evaluation Based On Patient Safety, Yung-Yu Su, Khin Than Win, John A. Fulcher Jan 2006

Electronic Health Record System Evaluation Based On Patient Safety, Yung-Yu Su, Khin Than Win, John A. Fulcher

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

After describing the general characteristics of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), we consider patient safety. We then proceed to discuss IS evaluation in general terms, followed by HIS system evaluation in particular. The D&M IS Success model, Technology Acceptance model and Task-Technology Fit model are considered as potential candidates for EHR System evaluation. Based upon a critical review of the available literature, we draw some conclusions about the appropriateness of current HIS/EHR evaluation approaches. Finally, we suggest that by incorporating patient safety attributes in any EHR System evaluation framework, then this could lead to improved accuracy, and in turn improved patient …

Fitness Evaluation For Structural Optimisation Genetic Algorithms Using Neural Networks, Koren Ward, Timothy J. Mccarthy Jan 2006

Fitness Evaluation For Structural Optimisation Genetic Algorithms Using Neural Networks, Koren Ward, Timothy J. Mccarthy

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper relates to the optimisation of structural design using Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and presents an improved method for determining the fitness of genetic codes that represent possible design solutions by using a neural network to generalize fitness. Two problems that often impede design optimization using genetic algorithms are expensive fitness evaluation and high epistasis. In this paper we show that by using a neural network as a fitness approximator, optimal solutions to certain design problems can be achieved in significantly less generations and with considerably less fitness evaluations.

Analyzing Harmonic Monitoring Data Using Data Mining, Ali Asheibi, David A. Stirling, Danny Sutanto Jan 2006

Analyzing Harmonic Monitoring Data Using Data Mining, Ali Asheibi, David A. Stirling, Danny Sutanto

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Harmonic monitoring has become an important tool for harmonic management in distribution systems. A comprehensive harmonic monitoring program has been designed and implemented on a typical electrical MV distribution system in Australia. The monitoring program involved measurements of the three-phase harmonic currents and voltages from the residential, commercial and industrial load sectors. Data over a three year period has been downloaded and available for analysis. The large amount of acquired data makes it difficult to identify operational events that impact significantly on the harmonics generated on the system. More sophisticated analysis methods are required to automatically determine which part of …

Human Visual Perception Of Region Warping Distortions, Yang-Wai Chow, Ronald Pose, Matthew Regan, James Phillips Jan 2006

Human Visual Perception Of Region Warping Distortions, Yang-Wai Chow, Ronald Pose, Matthew Regan, James Phillips

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Interactive virtual reality requires at least 60 frames per second in order to ensure smooth motion. For a good immersive experience, it is also necessary to have low end-to-end latency so that user interaction does not suffer from perceptible delays in images presented to the eyes. The Address Recalculation Pipeline (ARP) architecture reduces end-to-end latency in immersive Head Mounted Display (HMD) virtual reality systems. By using the ARP in conjunction with priority rendering, different sections of the scene are updated at different rates. This reduces the overall rendering load and allows for more complex and realistic scenes. Large object segmentation …

On The Design Of Early Generation Variety Trials With Correlated Data, Brian R. Cullis, A B. Smith, N. E. Coombes Jan 2006

On The Design Of Early Generation Variety Trials With Correlated Data, Brian R. Cullis, A B. Smith, N. E. Coombes

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This article considers the design of early generation variety trials with a prespecified spatial correlation structure and introduces a new class of partially replicated designs called p-rep designs in which the plots of standard varieties are replaced by additional plots of test lines. We show how efficient p-rep designs can be readily generated using the modified Reactive TABU search algorithm. The expected and realized genetic gain of p-rep and grid plot designs is compared in a simulation study.

Recovering Dc Coefficients In Block-Based Dct, Takeyuki Uehara, Reihaneh Safavi-Naini, Philip Ogunbona Jan 2006

Recovering Dc Coefficients In Block-Based Dct, Takeyuki Uehara, Reihaneh Safavi-Naini, Philip Ogunbona

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

It is a common approach for JPEG andMPEGencryption systems to provide higher protection for dc coefficients and less protection for ac coefficients. Some authors have employed a cryptographic encryption algorithm for the dc coefficients and left the ac coefficients to techniques based on random permutation lists which are known to be weak against known-plaintext and chosen-ciphertext attacks. In this paper we show that in block-based DCT, it is possible to recover dc coefficients from ac coefficients with reasonable image quality and show the insecurity of image encryption methods which rely on the encryption of dc values using a cryptoalgorithm. The …

Simdrug: Tackling The Complexity Of Illicit Drug Markets In Australia, Pascal Perez, A Dray, Alison Ritter, Paul Dietze, T Moore, Lorraine Mazerolle Jan 2006

Simdrug: Tackling The Complexity Of Illicit Drug Markets In Australia, Pascal Perez, A Dray, Alison Ritter, Paul Dietze, T Moore, Lorraine Mazerolle

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Complexity of illicit drug markets mirrors the complexity of illicit drug use itself. The intricacy of multiple interactions between individuals, the various time lines linked to different aspects of harm reduction, and contrasted social rationalities observed among field practitioners (prevention, law enforcement, harm reduction) contribute to the creation of complex and unpredictable systems. In order to explore this complexity, an Agent-Based Model (ABM) called SimDrug was designed. The prototype model includes users, dealers, wholesalers, outreach workers and police forces. The model is focused upon local drug market and the hot spots in Melbourne. The time span for the model is …

Agents, Idols, And Icons, Pascal Perez Jan 2006

Agents, Idols, And Icons, Pascal Perez

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Since the early 1960s, Artificial Intelligence has cherished the ambition to design an artificial cognitive machine able to reproduce intimate aspects of human behaviour. Distributed Artificial Intelligence and its most recent avatars—Multi- Agent Systems—have developed the concept towards social interactions and societal dynamics, attracting the attention of sociologists and ethnographers who found new ways to elaborate or validate their theories. But populations of cognitive agents aren’t the real thing, despite the efforts of their designers. Furthermore, one must cautiously examine the rationale behind these often incredibly complex arrangements of algorithms, in order to assess the usefulness of such exercises. As …

Domains Of Group A Streptococcal M Protein That Confer Resistance To Phagocytosis, Opsonization And Protection: Implications For Vaccine Development., Jason D. Mcarthur, Mark J. Walker

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus) colonises skin and throat tissues resulting in a range of benign and serious human diseases. Opsonisation and phagocytosis are important defence mechanisms employed by the host to destroy group A streptococci. Antisera against the cell-surface M protein, of which over 150 different types have been identified, are opsonic and contribute to disease protection . In this issue of Molecular Microbiology, Sandin and colleagues have comprehensively analysed the regions of M5 protein that contribute to phagocytosis resistance and opsonisation. Human plasma proteins bound to M5 protein B- and C-repeats were shown to block opsonisation, an observation …

Dust deposition in the Wollongong-Port Kembla region, New South Wales, Australia, arising from local industrial and mining activities, has been of major concern since the early 1960s. Reports dealing with dust deposition rates in the region have been published by different organisations where the data have been averaged for the region. This provides a general trend for the deposition rates for the whole region without considering the trends occurring in specific locations. This study was the first to examine the trends observed at 35 individual gauges to identify more localised trends in dust deposition rates in the Wollongong-Port Kembla region, …

The genome-wide mapping of gene-regulatory motifs remains a major goal that will facilitate the modelling of gene-regulatory networks and their evolution. The repressor element 1 is a long, conserved transcription factor-binding site which recruits the transcriptional repressor REST to numerous neuron-specific target genes. REST plays important roles in multiple biological processes and disease states. To map RE1 sites and target genes, we created a position specific scoring matrix representing the RE1 and used it to search the human and mouse genomes. We identified 1301 and 997 RE1s inhuman and mouse genomes, respectively, of which >40% are novel. By employing an …

Active Seismic Response Control Of Tall Buildings Based On Reduced Order Model, Haiping Du, John Boffa, Nong Zhang

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper applies the dynamic model reduction method to obtain a reduced order model of an experimental tall building which has twenty floors and is 2.5m high. The experimental model is designed to imitate a real tall building with an active mass damper, and is used to study the available modelling and active control strategies for real tall buildings. Based on the dynamic model reduction method, a reduced order model is used within a Hinfin controller design to suppress excessive vibrations induced by seismic excitation. The reduced order model effectively describes only those frequency characteristics from the full order …

Modelling Of A Magneto-Rheological Damper By Evolving Radial Basis Function Networks, Haiping Du, James Lam, Nong Zhang Jan 2006

Modelling Of A Magneto-Rheological Damper By Evolving Radial Basis Function Networks, Haiping Du, James Lam, Nong Zhang

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper presents an approach to approximate the forward and inverse dynamic behaviours of a magneto-rheological (MR) damper using evolving radial basis function (RBF) networks. Due to the highly nonlinear characteristics of MR dampers, modelling of MR dampers becomes a very important problem to their applications. In this paper, an alternative representation of the MR damper in terms of evolving RBF networks, which have a structure of four input neurons and one output neuron to emulate the forward and inverse dynamic behaviours of an MR damper, respectively, is developed by combining the genetic algorithms (GAs) to search for the network …

Wool and meat contribute to profit in sheep enterprises and both need to be considered in breeding programs. The relative responses expected from selection for a range of traits are presented and the realised responses that have been achieved in Merinos and variation in maternal breeds are illustrated. Knowledge of genetic parameters is required for the development of complex breeding objectives and selection indexes, comprehensive genetic evaluation of animals and the design of effective breeding programs. A review of world literature has highlighted the lack of accurate estimates of genetic parameters, especially for genetic correlations between trait groups. Analyses of …

Genetic Analysis Of Weight, Fat And Muscle Depth In Growing Lambs Using Random Regression Models, T. Fischer, J. Van Der Werf, R. Banks, A. Ball, Arthur R. Gilmour

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Genetic parameters were estimated using uni- and bi-variate random regression models for weight, eye-muscle depth and fat depth measures between 60 and 360 days of age. Each trait was measured up to five times in 50-day intervals following weaning on approximately 4000 Australian Poll Dorset Sheep. The model accounted for rearing type, dam age, management group and age of recording. The model used for analysing weight included quadratic, orthogonal polynomials for direct genetic and environmental effects, a linear polynomial for maternal genetic effects and heterogeneous error variance across ages. The fat and muscle analysis used linear orthogonal polynomials for direct …

Comparison Of Small-Field Behaviour In Mgb2, Low And High Temperature Superconductors, Alexey V. Pan, S X. Dou Jan 2006

Comparison Of Small-Field Behaviour In Mgb2, Low And High Temperature Superconductors, Alexey V. Pan, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Different types of superconductors have been investigated at small magnetic fields (Ba) over wide temperature (T) ranges at different Ba orientations. It has been shown that the temperature dependence of the characteristic field (B*), separating the Ba-independent critical current density (Jc) plateau (single vortex pinning regime) and the region with Jc(Ba) (collective pinning), can be attributed either to the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth for Nb-film and MgB2bulk superconductors, or to thermally activated processes for Bi-based superconductors and YBa2Cu3O7−δ superconducting …

Influence Of The Iron Sheath On The Local Supercurrent Distribution In Mgb2 Wires, Marie Roussel, Alexey V. Pan, Sihai Zhou, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The magnetic behavior of iron sheathed magnesium diboride (MgB2) wires was investigated. Global magnetization measurements have shown unusual critical current density variations compare to a superconductor with no magnetic environment. Local quantitative studies, through MO images, are linked to these global magnetization measurements in order to better understand the observed results. It is shown that the current distribution is affected by the soft magnetic sheath interacting with the superconducting core.
