Fast Response Liquid Crystal Devices, Yung-Hsun Wu Jan 2006

Fast Response Liquid Crystal Devices, Yung-Hsun Wu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Liquid crystal (LC) has been widely used for displays, spatial light modulators, variable optical attenuators (VOAs) and other tunable photonic devices. The response time of these devices is mainly determined by the employed liquid crystal material. How to obtain fast response for the LC devices is a fundamentally important and technically challenging task. In this dissertation, we investigate several methods to improve liquid crystal response time, for examples, using dual-frequency liquid crystals, polymer stabilized liquid crystals, and sheared polymer network liquid crystals. We discover a new class of material, denoted as sheared polymer network liquid crystal (SPNLC) which exhibits a …

Modeling And Characterizations Of New Notions In Life Testing With Statistical Applications, Mohammad Sepehrifar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Knowing the class to which a life distribution belongs gives us an idea about the aging of the device or system the life distribution represents, and enables us to compare the aging properties of different systems. This research intends to establish several new nonparametric classes of life distributions defined by the concept of inactivity time of a unit with a guaranteed minimum life length. These classes play an important role in the study of reliability theory, survival analysis, maintenance policies, economics, actuarial sciences and many other applied areas.

Recent advances in clinical imaging technology have led to an effective medical visualization …

Polarization-Independent Liquid Crystal Devices, Yi-Hsin Lin Jan 2006

Polarization-Independent Liquid Crystal Devices, Yi-Hsin Lin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Liquid crystal (LC) devices can be operated as amplitude modulators and phase modulators. LC amplitude modulation is commonly used in liquid crystal display (LCD) while phase-only modulation is useful for laser beam steering, tunable grating, prism, lens, and other photonic devices. Most LC devices are polarization dependent and require at least one polarizer. As a result, the optical efficiency is low. To enhance display brightness, a power hungry backlight has to be used leading to a high power consumption and short battery life. In a LC phase modulator, the polarization dependent property complicates the laser beam steering system. It is …

Experimental Techniques For Nonlinear Material Characterization: A Nonlinear Spectrometer Using A White-Light Continuum Z-Scan, Mihaela Balu Jan 2006

Experimental Techniques For Nonlinear Material Characterization: A Nonlinear Spectrometer Using A White-Light Continuum Z-Scan, Mihaela Balu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The main goal of this dissertation is to introduce and demonstrate a new method for the rapid determination of the nonlinear absorption spectra and the dispersion of the nonlinear refraction of optical materials in the visible and near IR spectral regions. However, conventional methods like, white-light continuum pump-probe and Z-scan techniques were used to measure the peak 2PA cross-sections for a number of commercially available photoinitiators. In the new method mentioned above, a high energy, broadband femtosecond white-light continuum is used to replace the single wavelength source conventionally used in a Z-scan experiment. In a Z-scan experiment, the transmittance of …

Ryan, Erica R. Blizzard, Chongyao Zhang, Emanuel Margoliash, Benjamin A. Feinberg

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Contrary to most heme proteins, ferrous cytochrome c does not bind ligands such as cyanide and CO. In order to quantify this observation, the redox potential of the ferric/ferrous cytochrome c–cyanide redox couple was determined for the first time by cyclic voltammetry. Its E0′ was −240 mV versus SHE, equivalent to −23.2 kJ/mol. The entropy of reaction for the reduction of the cyanide complex was also determined. From a thermodynamic cycle that included this new value for the cyt c cyanide complex E0′, the binding constant of cyanide to the reduced protein was estimated to …

Sources And Deposition Processes Linking Atmospheric Chemistry And Firn Records From Four Glacier Accumulation Zones In The Mcmurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, Bruce R. Williamson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Samples of snow and firn from accumulation zones on the Victoria Upper Glacier, the Clark Glacier, the Commonwealth Glacier and the Blue Glacier in the McMurdo Dry Valleys (~77 to 78º S and 161 to 164º E), Antarctica, are evaluated chemically and isotopically to determine the relative importance of local (site-specific) factors versus regional-scale climatic influences in defining regional glaciochemistry. Two approaches for distinguishing these controls are examined: comparing chemical concentrations using multivariate statistical analysis, and examining the effect of physical filtration (capturing particulate material largely originating in close proximity to each site) on sample values. These techniques provide constraints …

A Fractal Example Of A Continuous Monotone Function With Vanishing Derivatives On A Dense Set And Infinite Derivatives On Another Dense Set, Bünyami̇n Demi̇r, Vakif Dzhafarov, Şahi̇n Koçak, Mehmet Üreyen

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Inspired by the theory of analysis on fractals, we construct an example of a continuous, monotone function on an interval, which has vanishing derivatives on a dense set and infinite derivatives on another dense set. Although such examples could be constructed by classical means of probability and measure theory, this one is more elementary and emerges naturally as a byproduct of some new fractal constructions.

Does The Great Valley Group Contain Jurassic Strata? Reevaluation Of The Age And Early Evolution Of A Classic Forearc Basin, Kathleen D. Surpless, S. A. Graham, J. A. Covault, J. L. Wooden Jan 2006

Does The Great Valley Group Contain Jurassic Strata? Reevaluation Of The Age And Early Evolution Of A Classic Forearc Basin, Kathleen D. Surpless, S. A. Graham, J. A. Covault, J. L. Wooden

Geosciences Faculty Research

The presence of Cretaceous detrital zircon in Upper Jurassic strata of the Great Valley Group may require revision of the lower Great Valley Group chronostratigraphy, with significant implications for the Late Jurassic–Cretaceous evolution of the continental margin. Samples (n = 7) collected from 100 km along strike in the purported Tithonian strata of the Great Valley Group contain 20 Cretaceous detrital zircon grains, based on sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe age determinations. These results suggest that Great Valley Group deposition was largely Cretaceous, creating a discrepancy between biostratigraphy based on Buchia zones and chronostratigraphy based on radiometric age dates. These …

Adaptive Finite Element Methods For Elliptic Pdes Based On Conforming Centroidal Voronoi-Delaunay Triangulations, Lili Ju, Max Gunzburger, Weidong Zhao

Faculty Publications

A new triangular mesh adaptivity algorithm for elliptic PDEs that combines a posteriori error estimation with centroidal Voronoi–Delaunay tessellations of domains in two dimensions is proposed and tested. The ability of the first ingredient to detect local regions of large error and the ability of the second ingredient to generate superior unstructured grids result in a mesh adaptivity algorithm that has several very desirable features, including the following. Errors are very well equidistributed over the triangles; at all levels of refinement, the triangles remain very well shaped, even if the grid size at any particular refinement level, when viewed globally, …

Tacrolimus reduced the number of recipients …

Negative Impact Of Noise On The Principal Component Analysis Of Nmr Data, Steven M. Halouska, Robert Powers Jan 2006

Negative Impact Of Noise On The Principal Component Analysis Of Nmr Data, Steven M. Halouska, Robert Powers

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

Principal component analysis (PCA) is routinely applied to the study of NMR based metabolomic data. PCA is used to simplify the examination of complex metabolite mixtures obtained from biological samples that may be composed of hundreds or thousands of chemical components. PCA is primarily used to identify relative changes in the concentration of metabolites to identify trends or characteristics within the NMR data that permits discrimination between various samples that differ in their source or treatment. A common concern with PCA of NMR data is the potential over emphasis of small changes in high concentration metabolites that would over-shadow signifi …

Base-Level Buffers And Buttresses: A Model For Upstream Versus Downstream Control On Fluvial Geometry And Architecture Within Sequences, John M. Holbrook, Robert W. Scott, Francisca Oboh-Ikuenobe Jan 2006

Base-Level Buffers And Buttresses: A Model For Upstream Versus Downstream Control On Fluvial Geometry And Architecture Within Sequences, John M. Holbrook, Robert W. Scott, Francisca Oboh-Ikuenobe

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effects of downstream base-level control on fluvial architecture and geometry are well explored in several broadly similar sequence-stratigraphic models. Cretaceous Dakota Group strata, U.S. Western Interior, have characteristics reflecting combined downstream and upstream base-level controls that these models cannot address. Particularly, three layers of amalgamated channel-belt sandstone within this group thicken and are continuous for distances (≤ 300 km) along dip that stretch the reasonable lengths for which these models are intended to apply. As well, architecture in up-dip reaches records repeated valley-scale cut-and-fill cycles. This contrasts with equivalent strata down dip which record channel-scale lateral migration with no …

Diurnal Temperature Range Over The United States: A Satellite View, D. Sun, R. T. Pinker, Menas Kafatos Jan 2006

Diurnal Temperature Range Over The United States: A Satellite View, D. Sun, R. T. Pinker, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Diurnal temperature range (DTR) is an important climate change index. Information on this parameter comes primarily from sparse and unevenly distributed observations of shelter air temperature. In this study, five years of GOES- 8 based estimates of land surface temperature (LST) over the United States are used to evaluate DTR at high spatial resolution. The spatial and temporal patterns that emerged show a high degree of consistency with independent satellite estimates of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Specifically, the arid regions in the western and central U.S. have larger DTRs than the eastern United States or the northwest coast. …
