Matrix-J-Unitary Non-Commutative Rational Formal Power Series, Daniel Alpay, D. S. Kalyuzhnyi-Verbovetzkii

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Formal power series in N non-commuting indeterminates can be considered as a counterpart of functions of one variable holomorphic at 0, and some of their properties are described in terms of coefficients. However, really fruitful analysis begins when one considers for them evaluations on N-tuples of n × n matrices (with n = 1, 2, . . .) or operators on an infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space. Moreover, such evaluations appear in control, optimization and stabilization problems of modern system engineering.

In this paper, a theory of realization and minimal factorization of rational matrix-valued functions which are J-unitary on the imaginary …

Learning Languages From Positive Data And A Finite Number Of Queries, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber Jan 2006

Learning Languages From Positive Data And A Finite Number Of Queries, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

A computational model for learning languages in the limit from full positive data and a bounded number of queries to the teacher (oracle) is introduced and explored. Equivalence, superset, and subset queries are considered (for the latter one we consider also a variant when the learner tests every conjecture, but the number of negative answers is uniformly bounded). If the answer is negative, the teacher may provide a counterexample. We consider several types of counterexamples: arbitrary, least counterexamples, the ones whose size is bounded by the size of positive data seen so far, and no counterexamples. A number of hierarchies …

Engineering requires tradeoffs [23]. When engineering computer applications, software engineers should consider the costs and benefits to humans as an integral part of the software development process. In this paper we focus on reliability, a central aspect of software quality, and the influence of relationships and various software development contexts on the software developer.

Neutrosophic Rings, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2006

Neutrosophic Rings, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book we define the new notion of neutrosophic rings. The motivation for this study is two-fold. Firstly, the classes of neutrosophic rings defined in this book are generalization of the two well-known classes of rings: group rings and semigroup rings. The study of these generalized neutrosophic rings will give more results for researchers interested in group rings and semigroup rings. Secondly, the notion of neutrosophic polynomial rings will cause a paradigm shift in the general polynomial rings. This study has to make several changes in case of neutrosophic polynomial rings. This would give solutions to polynomial equations for …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

We report on a search for gravitational waves from binary black hole inspirals in the data from the second science run of the LIGO interferometers. The search focused on binary systems with component masses between 3 and 20M⊙. Optimally oriented binaries with distances up to 1 Mpc could be detected with efficiency of at least 90%. We found no events that could be identified as gravitational waves in the 385.6 hours of data that we searched.

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ferromagnetic resonance studies of the temperature dependence of magnetic anisotropies in a Ga0.965Mn0.035As film between 5 and 40K are reported. The in-plane and out-of-the-plane angular dependences of the resonance field were analyzed within the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert approach. The second- and fourth-order magnetic anisotropy energies were derived. The temperature dependence of magnetization and of magnetic anisotropy were studied by superconducting quantum interference device and ferromagnetic resonance.

Effects Of An External Field And Dissipation On Decoherence, Jian Zuo Jan 2006

Effects Of An External Field And Dissipation On Decoherence, Jian Zuo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Decoherence is the suppression of the interference of quantum states. It plays important roles in the study of the quantum-classical transition. It is also the major obstacle in the implementation of various schemes of quantum computers. Decoherence can be affected by many factors. The interactions between quantum systems of interest and dissipative environments cause the extensively studied environment-induced-decoherence. Decoherence can also occur as the result of a temperature effect. A recent experiment investigated the engineering of decoherence, which involves applying an external field to the quantum system. In this thesis, we study the effect of an external field on decoherence …

Nutrient Constraints On Plant Community Production And Organic Matter Accumulation Of Subtropical Floating Marshes, Guerry O., Jr. Holm Jr. Jan 2006

Nutrient Constraints On Plant Community Production And Organic Matter Accumulation Of Subtropical Floating Marshes, Guerry O., Jr. Holm Jr.

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the cycle of delta growth and decay, peat-forming wetlands span a time and space continuum. Later in the delta cycle, freshwater floating marshes become increasingly removed from external sediment subsidy and internal nutrient cycling controls plant productivity and organic matter accumulation. An interesting question is whether increased external nutrient loading can affect the basic processes that lead to peat formation—plant production and organic matter decomposition. I conducted several field studies to understand whether belowground organic matter accumulation and decomposition were affected with increased nutrient exposure; in addition, the plant community was monitored over three years. A laboratory soil respiration …

Modeling The Effects Of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals On Atlantic Croaker: Understanding Biomarkers And Predicting Population Responses, Cheryl Anne Murphy Jan 2006

Modeling The Effects Of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals On Atlantic Croaker: Understanding Biomarkers And Predicting Population Responses, Cheryl Anne Murphy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A number of environmental stressors have been shown to interfere with reproductive and behavioral processes of fish by interfering with endocrine function. Most biomarkers of endocrine disturbance tend to be static measurements from dynamic systems making them difficult to evaluate within the context of an individual, or subtle effects that do not relate well to endpoints of ecological significance. I present an approach that uses a series of models, based on Atlantic croaker, to extrapolate laboratory results to indicators of individual and population health. First, I created a physiologically based model that simulates vitellogenesis in a female fish. The model …

Direct Detection Of Homocysteine And Syntheses Of Lanthanide Complexes As Biosensors, Weihua Wang Jan 2006

Direct Detection Of Homocysteine And Syntheses Of Lanthanide Complexes As Biosensors, Weihua Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

At elevated levels, homocysteine (Hcy) is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and Alzheimer’s disease. It’s also implicated in a number of other diseases such as neural tube defects, pregnancy complications, and renal failures. The monitoring of Hcy levels in plasma is of current concern. To date, the biochemical mechanism by which Hcy is involved in disease states is unclear. Herein, we describe highly selective colorimetric methods for the direct determination of Hcy. Inexpensive, commercially available materials are reported. The results show potential application for the detection of Hcy in human blood plasma. Additionally, new HPLC postcolumn detection methods for …

Applications Of Titanium-Mediated Reductive Coupling And Cyclocarbonylation Reactions Toward Natural Product Synthesis, Maria A. Appeaning Jan 2006

Applications Of Titanium-Mediated Reductive Coupling And Cyclocarbonylation Reactions Toward Natural Product Synthesis, Maria A. Appeaning

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Previous work in our laboratory has demonstrated not only a synthetic value of tandem reductive cyclization - carbonylation reactions in the preparation of complex molecules but also the interesting stereoselectivity observed therein. The first part of this work employs the titanium-mediated cyclocarbonylation of tethered dienals for the synthesis of prostaglandin analogues, in particular PGF and methyl jasmonate. Based on this hetero Pauson-Khand strategy, we have established an efficient racemic route to both the prostaglandin and the methyl jasmonate core skeletons. Moderate to excellent selectivities with regard to the hetero Pauson-Khand reaction were observed in both cases. The second part …

On Moment Conditions For The Girsanov Theorem, See Keong Lee Jan 2006

On Moment Conditions For The Girsanov Theorem, See Keong Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, the well-known Girsanov Theorem will be proved under a set of moment conditions on exponential processes. Our conditions are motivated by the desire to avoid using the local martingale theory in the proof of the Girsanov Theorem. Namely, we will only use the martingale theory to prove the Girsanov Theorem. Many sufficient conditions for the validity of the Girsanov Theorem have been found since the publication of the result by Girsanov in 1960. We will compare our conditions with some of these conditions. As an application of the Girsanov Theorem, we will show the nonexistence of an …

Two-Dimensional And High-Throughput Electrophoretic Separation Of Proteins Using Polymeric Microchips, Hamed Shadpour Jan 2006

Two-Dimensional And High-Throughput Electrophoretic Separation Of Proteins Using Polymeric Microchips, Hamed Shadpour

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A major task in proteomics is to identify proteins from a biological sample using two-dimensional (2-D) separation prior to mass spectrometry of peptides generated via proteolytic digestion of the proteins. For 2-D separations, microfluidic devices are superior to bench top and capillary-based systems since they potentially provide higher separation efficiencies due to the minimal dead volumes produced during peak transfer between the two separation dimensions. In addition, fast separations can be envisioned because the column lengths are typically shorter in microfluidic platforms without scarifying peak capacity. High-throughput capabilities are extremely desirable for many types of bio-analytical analyses, such as understanding …

Magnetic, Thermodynamic And Transport Properties Of The Magnetic Semiconductor Fe₁₋Xcoxs₂ And Superconducting Lasb₂, Song Guo Jan 2006

Magnetic, Thermodynamic And Transport Properties Of The Magnetic Semiconductor Fe₁₋Xcoxs₂ And Superconducting Lasb₂, Song Guo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In recent years magnetic semiconductors have attracted a great deal of attention because it is thought that they can be used to generate spin polarized current in spintronics, an emerging field where the spin degree of freedom of charge carriers is utilized in microelectronic devices. In this dissertation work, we investigate the magnetic, thermodynamic, and transport properties of the magnetic semiconductor Fe1-XCoxS2 for x less than 0.14, the doping range where Insulator-to-Metal and paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transitions occur. We discovered that the Kondo effect is an important ingredient in the paramagnetic region of magnetic semiconductor Fe1-X …

Crystal Growth And The Search For Highly Correlated Ternary Intermetallic Antimonides And Stannides, Evan Lyle Thomas Jan 2006

Crystal Growth And The Search For Highly Correlated Ternary Intermetallic Antimonides And Stannides, Evan Lyle Thomas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation describes the crystal growth, chemical structures, and efforts made towards the understanding of the physical properties of novel ternary rare-earth intermetallics, which may display signature behavior such as superconductivity, heavy fermion behavior, intermediate valence, and/or large magnetoresistance. To address the problem of correlating these characteristics with structural features, several ternary antimony- and tin-containing phases, Ln-T-X (Ln = lanthanide; T = Co, Ni, Pd; X = Sn, Sb), have been synthesized in single crystalline form by metallic flux-growth methods and characterized by X-ray diffraction. The antimonide compounds LnNi1-xSb2 (Ln = Y, Gd-Tb, Er, Yb), alpha, beta-LnNiSb3 (Ln = La, …

Structural Characterization Of Poly(Heterocycles) Formed Using Oxidative Methods, Rebecca Marie Brauch Jan 2006

Structural Characterization Of Poly(Heterocycles) Formed Using Oxidative Methods, Rebecca Marie Brauch

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This research focused on elucidation of structural information for conducting polymer systems using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The structure of conducting polymer systems has been found to directly influence their physical properties. Poly(pyrrole) and poly(thiophene) are two of the most widely studied conducting polymers due to their high electrical conductivity, stability in the doped state, low toxicity, and current/potential applications. The purpose of this research was to apply MALDI-TOF MS to heterocyclic conducting polymers, specifically those of pyrrole and thiophene, to investigate structural properties of these polymers, with the specific aim of determining end group and …

Numerical Techniques For Fresnel Diffraction In Computational Holography, Richard Patrick Muffoletto Jan 2006

Numerical Techniques For Fresnel Diffraction In Computational Holography, Richard Patrick Muffoletto

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Optical holography can produce very realistic virtual images due to its capability to properly convey the depth cues that we use to interpret three-dimensional objects. Computational holography is the use of digital representations plus computational methods to carry out the holographic operations of construction and reconstruction. The large computational requirements of holographic simulations prohibit present-day existence of real-time holographic displays comparable in size to traditional two-dimensional displays. Fourier-based approaches to calculate the Fresnel diffraction of light provide one of the most efficient algorithms for holographic computations because this permits the use of the fast Fourier transform (FFT). The limitations on …

Masters Theses

"This study represents a contribution to Early Paleogene biostratigraphy in the tropics where published studies are sparse in comparison with mid and high latitude regions. Data were derived from a comprehensive analysis of dinoflagellate cysts (dinocysts) in 45 samples from the Early Paleocene to Early Eocene interval at two localities in West Africa, namely Alo-1 well in the Anambra Basin, southeastern Nigeria, and Ocean Drilling Program Hole 959D (ODP Leg 159) in the Cote d'Ivoire-Ghana Transform Margin. Dinocyst recovery varied from very good to poor, and the specimens were commonly well preserved. The dinocyst data were calibrated with existing calcareous …

Population Size Bias In Descendant-Weighted Diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo Simulations, G. Lee Warren, Robert J. Hinde Jan 2006

Population Size Bias In Descendant-Weighted Diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo Simulations, G. Lee Warren, Robert J. Hinde

Chemistry Publications and Other Works

We consider the influence of population size on the accuracy of diffusion quantum Monte Carlo simulations that employ descendant weighting or forward walking techniques to compute expectation values of observables that do not commute with the Hamiltonian. We show that for a simple model system, the d-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator, the population size must increase rapidly with d in order to ensure that the simulations produce accurate results. When the population size is too small, expectation values computed using descendant-weighted diffusion quantum Monte Carlo simulations exhibit significant systematic biases.

Computing The Arithmetic Genus Of Hilbert Modular Fourfolds, Helen G. Grundman, L. E. Lippincott Jan 2006

Computing The Arithmetic Genus Of Hilbert Modular Fourfolds, Helen G. Grundman, L. E. Lippincott

Mathematics Faculty Research and Scholarship

The Hilbert modular fourfold determined by the totally real quartic number field k is a desingularization of a natural compactification of the quotient space Gamma(k)\H-4, where Gamma(k) = PSL2(O-k) acts on H-4 by fractional linear transformations via the four embeddings of k into R. The arithmetic genus, equal to one plus the dimension of the space of Hilbert modular cusp forms of weight (2, 2, 2, 2), is a birational invariant useful in the classification of these varieties. In this work, we describe an algorithm allowing for the automated computation of the arithmetic genus and give sample results.

Advances And Applications Of Dezert-Smarandache Theory (Dsmt) For Information Fusion (Collected Works), Vol. 2, Florentin Smarandache, Jean Dezert

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This second volume dedicated to Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT) in Information Fusion brings in new fusion quantitative rules (such as the PCR1-6, where PCR5 for two sources does the most mathematically exact redistribution of conflicting masses to the non-empty sets in the fusion literature), qualitative fusion rules, and the Belief Conditioning Rule (BCR) which is different from the classical conditioning rule used by the fusion community working with the Mathematical Theory of Evidence.

Other fusion rules are constructed based on T-norm and T-conorm (hence using fuzzy logic and fuzzy set in information fusion), or more general fusion rules based on N-norm …

The Roles Of Digital Libraries In Teaching And Learning Geography, Chew-Hung Chang, John Hedberg, Tiong-Sa Teh, Ee Peng Lim Jan 2006

The Roles Of Digital Libraries In Teaching And Learning Geography, Chew-Hung Chang, John Hedberg, Tiong-Sa Teh, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Adopting a problem-centred approach helps students to learn Geography more effectively as they are able to identify and generalize about where different resources or activities are spatially located and they learn to associate certain patterns and processes with geographical changes. In an era where web-based student-centred inquiry is gaining popularity as a mode of learning Geography, the role of digital libraries as delivery trucks (in Clark’s terminology, 1983) needs to be better understood. An obvious affordance of the digital library is that it organizes information around themes for problems to be solved. This paper describes a developmental project to build …

In-Network Join Processing For Sensor Networks, Hai Yu, Ee Peng Lim, Jun Zhang Jan 2006

In-Network Join Processing For Sensor Networks, Hai Yu, Ee Peng Lim, Jun Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent advances in hardware and wireless technologies have led to sensor networks consisting of large number of sensors capable of gathering and processing data collectively. Query processing on these sensor networks has to consider various inherent constraints. While simple queries such as select and aggregate queries in wireless sensor networks have been addressed in the literature, the processing of join queries in sensor networks remains to be investigated. In this paper, we present a synopsis join strategy for evaluating join queries in sensor networks with communication efficiency. In this strategy, instead of directly joining two relations distributed in a sensor …
