Hot Stars With Disks, Erika Dawn Grundstrom Aug 2007

Hot Stars With Disks, Erika Dawn Grundstrom

Physics and Astronomy Dissertations

The evolutionary paths of the massive O and B type stars are often defined by angular momentum transformations that involve circumstellar gas disks. This circumstellar gas is revealed in several kinds of observations, and here I describe a series of investigations of the hydrogen line emission from such disk using detailed studies of five massive binaries and a survey of 128 Be stars. By examining three sets of spectra of the active mass-transfer binary system RY Scuti, I determined masses of 7.1 +/- 1.2 M_sun for the bright supergiant and 30.0 +/- 2.1 M_sun for the massive companion that is …

Modeling The Permittivity Of Two-Phase Media Containing Monodisperse Spheres: Effects Of Microstructure And Multiple Scattering, Timothy E. Doyle, David A. Robinson, Scott B. Jones, Keith H. Warnick, Brent L. Carruth Aug 2007

Modeling The Permittivity Of Two-Phase Media Containing Monodisperse Spheres: Effects Of Microstructure And Multiple Scattering, Timothy E. Doyle, David A. Robinson, Scott B. Jones, Keith H. Warnick, Brent L. Carruth

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

A numerical modeling approach was developed to predict the dielectric properties of heterogeneous particulate materials with arbitrary microstructures. To test the method, simulation and experimental data were acquired for the effective permittivities of various glass sphere suspensions. Both ordered lattices and random microstructures of up to 3600 spheres were modeled for volume fractions of 0.025–0.60. The electric fields in the suspensions were computed using an iterative multipole method that included multiple-scattering effects. The effective permittivities were obtained by averaging the electric field and electric displacement over a representative volume. Frequency spectra, electric field images, and single-scattering results (i.e., no particle-particle …

The Spillable Environment: Expanding A Handheld Device's Screen Real Estate And Interactive Capabilities, Jeffrey S. Clement Aug 2007

The Spillable Environment: Expanding A Handheld Device's Screen Real Estate And Interactive Capabilities, Jeffrey S. Clement

Theses and Dissertations

Handheld devices have a limited amount of screen real estate. If a handheld device could take advantage of larger screens, it would create a more powerful user interface and environment. As time progresses, Moore's law predicts that the computational power of handheld devices will increase dramatically in the future, promoting the interaction with a larger screen. Users can then use their peripheral vision to recognize spatial relationships between objects and solve problems more easily with this integrated system. In the spillable environment, the handheld device uses a DiamondTouch Table, a large, touch-sensitive horizontal table, to enhance the viewing environment. When …

The Barycenter Of The Numerical Range Of A Matrix, Sean A. Broughton, Roger G. Lautzenheiser, Thomas Werne Aug 2007

The Barycenter Of The Numerical Range Of A Matrix, Sean A. Broughton, Roger G. Lautzenheiser, Thomas Werne

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

The numerical range W(A) of an nxn matrix A is the totality of the scalar products <Ax,x> as x varies over all unit vectors in Cn The barycenter (center of mass) of the numerical range is defined geometrically as the center of mass of W(A) considered as a planar lamina with variable density and also as a limit of sample averages (<Ax1,x1>+...+<AxN,xN>)/N. Under a wide range the sampling schemes it is shown that the barycenter is the average of the spectrum …

Financial Portfolio Strategy: Application To College Of Southwest, Grace S. Thomson Aug 2007

Financial Portfolio Strategy: Application To College Of Southwest, Grace S. Thomson

Dr. Grace S. Thomson

Financial Portfolio Strategy Creating value in the organization is the cornerstone of business activity. Value-creation is a concept that has evolved for the past fifty years, stimulating the generation of theories, techniques, models and institutions (Slater and Zwirlein, 1996). Financial markets have developed in response to the dynamic corporate activity, providing different options of financing and investment. Financial decision-making at the executive level becomes critical in the creation of wealth in the organization, and the financial strategies designed by the Top Management Team (TMT) are expected to seek beyond profit maximization (Lankau et al, 2007; Myers, 2001). However, there are …

Biomarker Discovery Using Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimation: Application To The Treatment Of Antiretroviral Resistant Hiv Infection, Oliver Bembom, Maya L. Petersen , Soo-Yon Rhee , W. Jeffrey Fessel , Sandra E. Sinisi, Robert W. Shafer, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Researchers in clinical science and bioinformatics frequently aim to learn which of a set of candidate biomarkers is important in determining a given outcome, and to rank the contributions of the candidates accordingly. This article introduces a new approach to research questions of this type, based on targeted maximum likelihood estimation of variable importance measures.

The methodology is illustrated using an example drawn from the treatment of HIV infection. Specifically, given a list of candidate mutations in the protease enzyme of HIV, we aim to discover mutations that reduce clinical virologic response to antiretroviral regimens containing the protease inhibitor lopinavir. …

Reconnaissance Of Historic (Post-Ad 1000) High-Energy Deposits Along The Atlantic Coasts Of Southwest Britain, Ireland And Brittany, France, S. K. Haslett, Edward A. Bryant Aug 2007

Reconnaissance Of Historic (Post-Ad 1000) High-Energy Deposits Along The Atlantic Coasts Of Southwest Britain, Ireland And Brittany, France, S. K. Haslett, Edward A. Bryant

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Sand and gravel deposits from the Atlantic coasts of southwest Britain, Brittany and western Ireland are identified as potential indicators of historic (post-AD 1000) ocean-sourced high-energy events, such as storm surges and tsunami. This is an important historic period as it includes the climatic perturbations of the Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age, and also seismogenic events, such as the Lisbon tsunami of 1755. Ten new sites are identified from various coastal settings and dated using eight new radiocarbon dates alongside previously published data. Generally, sites do not appear to record multiple high-energy events, suggesting that either only …

Study Of Factors Of Affecting Recurrence Of Myoma After Myomectomy, Lu Wang Aug 2007

Study Of Factors Of Affecting Recurrence Of Myoma After Myomectomy, Lu Wang

Mathematics Theses

This study is performed to evaluate the factors associated with the recurrence of myoma after Myomectomy. Identifying the factors of myoma recurrence will assist the patient and her gynecologist in deciding the most appropriate method of treatment according to her specific social, medical and emotional needs. Multiple logistic regression is used to determine the factors affecting the recurrence. 'Age of Surgery', 'Tumor Size', 'Pelvic Pain' and the interaction between the 'Age of Surgery' and 'Tumor Size' are significant in the final model. Kaplan-Meier method is used to calculate the cumulative recurrence rate. The 5 year cumulative recurrence rate is 24.32% …

An Adaptive Bayesian Approach To Bernoulli-Response Clinical Trials, Andrew W. Stacey Aug 2007

An Adaptive Bayesian Approach To Bernoulli-Response Clinical Trials, Andrew W. Stacey

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional clinical trials have been inefficient in their methods of dose finding and dose allocation. In this paper a four-parameter logistic equation is used to model the outcome of Bernoulli-response clinical trials. A Bayesian adaptive design is used to fit the logistic equation to the dose-response curve of Phase II and Phase III clinical trials. Because of inherent restrictions in the logistic model, symmetric candidate densities cannot be used, thereby creating asymmetric jumping rules inside the Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. An order restricted Metropolis-Hastings algorithm is implemented to account for these limitations. Modeling clinical trials in a Bayesian framework …

Polynomial Functions Over Rings Of Residue Classes Of Integers, M Brandon Meredith Aug 2007

Polynomial Functions Over Rings Of Residue Classes Of Integers, M Brandon Meredith

Mathematics Theses

In this thesis we discuss how to find equivalent representations of polynomial functions over the ring of integers modulo a power of a prime. Specifically, we look for lower degree representations and representations with fewer variables for which important applications in electrical and computer engineering exist. We present several algorithms for finding these compact formulations.

We present a detailed study of mid-infrared spectroscopy and optical imaging of Seyfert galaxies with the goal of understanding the properties of astronomical dust around the central supermassive black hole and the accretion disk. Specifically, we have studied Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared spectra of 12 Seyfert 1.8-1.9s and 58 Seyfert 1s and 2s available in the Spitzer public archive, and the nuclear dust morphology in the central 500 pc of 91 narrow and broad-line Seyfert 1s using optical images from the Hubble Space Telescope. We have also developed visualization software to aid the understanding of the geometry of the central …

Semiconductor Quantum Structures For Ultraviolet-To-Infrared Multi-Band Radiation Detection, Gamini Ariyawansa Aug 2007

Semiconductor Quantum Structures For Ultraviolet-To-Infrared Multi-Band Radiation Detection, Gamini Ariyawansa

Physics and Astronomy Dissertations

In this work, multi-band (multi-color) detector structures considering different semiconductor device concepts and architectures are presented. Results on detectors operating in ultraviolet-to-infrared regions (UV-to-IR) are discussed. Multi-band detectors are based on quantum dot (QD) structures; which include quantum-dots-in-a-well (DWELL), tunneling quantum dot infrared photodetectors (T-QDIPs), and bi-layer quantum dot infrared photodetectors (Bi-QDIPs); and homo-/heterojunction interfacial workfunction internal photoemission (HIWIP/HEIWIP) structures. QD-based detectors show multi-color characteristics in mid- and far-infrared (MIR/FIR) regions, where as HIWIP/HEIWIP detectors show responses in UV or near-infrared (NIR) regions, and MIR-to-FIR regions. In DWELL structures, InAs QDs are placed in an InGaAs/GaAs quantum well (QW) to …

Identifying Calcium-Binding Sites And Predicting Disulfide Connectivity, Hai Deng Aug 2007

Identifying Calcium-Binding Sites And Predicting Disulfide Connectivity, Hai Deng

Computer Science Dissertations

Most questions in proteomics require complex answers. Yet graph theory, supervised learning, and statistical model have decomposed complex questions into simple questions with simple answers. The expertise in the field of protein study often address tasks that demand answers as complex as the questions. Such complex answers may consist of multiple factors that must be weighed against each other to arrive at a globally satisfactory and consistent solution to the question. In the prediction of calcium binding in proteins, we construct a global oxygen contact graph of a protein, then apply a graph algorithm to find oxygen clusters with the …

Synthesis And Structural Characterization Of Two Five Coordinate Aluminum Alkyl And Bis(Trimethylsilyl)Amino Complexes Bearing Acyclic Tetradentate Schiff Bases, C. R. Wade, B. J. Lamprecht, V. W. Day, John A. Belot Aug 2007

Synthesis And Structural Characterization Of Two Five Coordinate Aluminum Alkyl And Bis(Trimethylsilyl)Amino Complexes Bearing Acyclic Tetradentate Schiff Bases, C. R. Wade, B. J. Lamprecht, V. W. Day, John A. Belot

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

Two acyclic Schiff-base ligands, bis-5,5′-(1,3-propanediyldiimino)-2,2-dimethyl-4-hexene-3-one and bis-5,5′-(1,3-ethanediyldiimino)- 2,2-dimethyl-4-hexene-3-one, were used to complex homoleptic triethylaluminum and tris[bis(trimethylsilyl)amino]alu minum, respectively. The acid–base reactions proceeded in excellent yields with elimination of ethane or bis(trimethylsilyl)amine during in situ deprotonation of the protio Schiff-base. The colorless aluminum complexes crystallized from n-pentane and were characterized by standard methods including single crystal X-ray diffraction. Polymerization of racemic lactide, with addition of alcohol, yielded PLA with narrow polydispersities but low molecular weights.

Realizing Live Sequence Charts In System Verilog, Hai H. Wang, Shengchao Qin, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong Aug 2007

Realizing Live Sequence Charts In System Verilog, Hai H. Wang, Shengchao Qin, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The design of an embedded control system starts with an investigation of properties and behaviors of the process evolving within its environment, and an analysis of the requirement for its safety performance. In early stages, system requirements are often specied as scenarios of behavior using sequence charts for different use cases. This specication must be precise, intuitive and expressive enough to capture different aspects of embedded control systems. As a rather rich and useful extension to the classical message sequence charts, Live Sequence Charts (LSC), which provide a rich collection of constructs for specifying both possible and mandatory behaviors, are …
