In 2004 I taught a class of 31 eleven and twelve year olds in a south-west Western Australian state primary school which I will call Forestdown. After critique and reflection on my 2004 teaching, in 2005 I taught half a day per week at the same school, this time with ten year olds. I used action research (Reason & Bradbury, 2001) to articulate my challenges and to formulate the approach I used to address them. Significant research has been conducted into the utilization of geothermal resources as a ‘green’ energy source. However, minimal research has been conducted into geothermal resource utilization and depletion impacts on thermophile biodiversity. Thermophiles are organisms which have adapted over millions of year to extreme temperature and chemical compositions and exist in hot springs and other geothermal resources. Their ability to withstand high temperatures makes them invaluable to scientific and medical research. Finding Molecular Complexes Through Multiple Layer Clustering Of Protein Interaction Networks, Bill Andreopoulos, Aijun An, Xiangji Huang, Xiaogang Wang

Clustering protein-protein interaction networks (PINs) helps to identify complexes that guide the cell machinery. Clustering algorithms often create a flat clustering, without considering the layered structure of PINs. We propose the MULIC clustering algorithm that produces layered clusters. We applied MULIC to five PINs. Clusters correlate with known MIPS protein complexes. For example, a cluster of 79 proteins overlaps with a known complex of 88 proteins. Proteins in top cluster layers tend to be more representative of complexes than proteins in bottom layers. Lab work on finding unknown complexes or determining drug effects can be guided by top layer proteins.

Higher-order thinking is one of the defining characteristics of higher education, yet the rating of such behavior has been neither reliable nor valid. Recent research involving the use of categories has yielded relatively high inter-rater reliability, with nominal categories of behavior identified. The current study applies an ordinal-scale model of hierarchical complexity (MHC) to educational tasks. The initial results suggest that the MHC can be used to score questions with varying degrees of complexity and support, and that future research should concentrate on determining the reliability and validity of this scoring system for educational purposes.

Terrain attributes are commonly used to explain the spatial variability of agronomic, pedologic, and hydrologic variables. The terrain attributes studied here (elevation, slope, aspect, and curvature) are estimated readily from digital elevation models (DEMs), but questions remain about how the accuracy and sample spacing of the elevation data affect the estimated attributes. The main objective of this study was to quantify differences in each terrain attribute due to factors affecting DEM accuracy and grid cell size. Factors Affecting One-Way Hashing Of Cd-R Media, Christopher Marberry, Philip Craiger

While conducting a validation study of proficiency test media we found that applying the same hash algorithm against a single CD using different forensic applications resulted in different hash values. We formulated a series of experiments to determine the cause of the anomalous hash values. Our results suggest that certain write options cause forensic applications to report different hash values. We examine the possible consequences of these anomalies in legal proceedings and provide best practices for the use of hashing procedures.
