Markov-Based Lane Positioning Using Intervehicle Communication, Thanh-Son Dao, Keith Yu Kit Leung, Christopher M. Clark, Jan Paul Huissoon Dec 2007

Markov-Based Lane Positioning Using Intervehicle Communication, Thanh-Son Dao, Keith Yu Kit Leung, Christopher M. Clark, Jan Paul Huissoon

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The majority of today's navigation techniques for intelligent transportation systems use global positioning systems (GPS) that can provide position information with bounded errors. However, due to the low accuracy that is experienced with standard GPS, it is difficult to determine a vehicle's position at lane level. Using a Markov-based approach based on sharing information among a group of vehicles that are traveling within communication range, the lane positions of vehicles can be found. The algorithm's effectiveness is shown in both simulations and experiments with real data.

Tris(Dialkylamino)Aluminums: Syntheses, Characterization, Volatility Comparison, And Atomic Layer Deposition Of Alumina Thin Films, Casey R. Wade, Carter Silvernail, Chiranjib Banerjee, Axel Soulet, James Mcandrew, John A. Belot Jr.

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

The syntheses and characterization of both tris(diethylamino)aluminum and tris(diisopropylamino)aluminum are presented in this letter. Characterization includes vapor pressure measurements and comparison of the two non-pyrophoric precursors showing them to be viable alternatives to trimethylaluminum. Ultimately, tris(diisopropyl)aluminum was successful in the atomic layer deposition of alumina thin films.

Tb196: Temperature, Soil Moisture, And Streamflow At The Bear Brook Watershed In Maine (Bbwm), Ivan J. Fernandez, Joseph E. Karem, Stephen A. Norton, Lindsey E. Rustad

Technical Bulletins

The Bear Brook Watershed in Maine is a whole-ecosystem chemical manipulation initiated in 1987 to study the effects of acid deposition on forests and surface waters. The focus of this research was to understand the biogeochemical response of watersheds with emphasis on chemistry and hydrology. In 2001 a program was initiated to provide more detailed measurements of temperature and moisture to examine critical linkages amongst chemical, biological, and physical processes that ultimately work together to define ecosystem function. The purpose of this publication is to provide data from the initial phase of soil temperature, air temperature, and soil moisture measurements …

Occurrence And Biological Effect Of Exogenous Steroids In The Elkhorn River, Nebraska, Usa, Alan S. Kolok, Daniel D. Snow, Satomi Kohno, Marlo K. Sellin, Louis J. Guillette Jr. Dec 2007

Occurrence And Biological Effect Of Exogenous Steroids In The Elkhorn River, Nebraska, Usa, Alan S. Kolok, Daniel D. Snow, Satomi Kohno, Marlo K. Sellin, Louis J. Guillette Jr.

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

Recent studies of surface waters in North America, Japan, and Europe have reported the presence of steroidogenic agents as contaminants. The current study has three objectives: 1) to determine if steroidogenic compounds are present in the Elkhorn River, 2) to determine if sediments collected from the Elkhorn River can act as a source of steroidogenic compounds to aquatic organisms, and 3) to determine if site-specific biological effects are apparent in the hepatic gene expression of fathead minnows. Evidence was obtained using three approaches: 1) deployment of polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS), 2) deployment of caged fathead minnows, and 3) …

Changes In The Statistical Properties Of Stochastic Anisotropic Electromagnetic Beams On Propagation In The Turbulent Atmosphere, Xinyue Du, Daomu Zhao, Olga Korotkova Dec 2007

Changes In The Statistical Properties Of Stochastic Anisotropic Electromagnetic Beams On Propagation In The Turbulent Atmosphere, Xinyue Du, Daomu Zhao, Olga Korotkova

Physics Articles and Papers

We report analytic formulas for the elements of the e 2 X 2 cross-spectral density matrix of a stochastic electromagnetic anisotropic beam propagating through the turbulent atmosphere with the help of vector integration. From these formulas the changes in the spectral density (spectrum), in the spectral degree of polarization, and in the spectral degree of coherence of such a beam on propagation are determined. As an example, these quantities are calculated for a so-called anisotropic electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model beam propagating in the isotropic and homogeneous atmosphere. In particular, it is shown numerically that for a beam of this class, unlike …

Application Of Correlation-Induced Spectral Changes To Inverse Scattering, Daomu Zhao, Olga Korotkova, Emil Wolf

Physics Articles and Papers

It is shown how the phenomenon of correlation-induced spectral changes generated on scattering of a polychromatic plane wave on a spatially homogeneous random medium may be used to determine the correlation function of the scattering potential of the medium.

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Presentations

Since the summer of 2004, over 200 ozonesondes have been launched from the campuses of Rice University or the University of Houston (29.7 N, 95.3 W), each about 3 miles from downtown Houston. These sounding launches have been sponsored by NASA, the Shell Center for Sustainability of Rice University, and the Texas Commissions for Environmental Quality as part of a large effort to understand Houston’s ozone problem. Data from these soundings have provided valuable insight into the seasonal and diurnal variations of the vertical ozone distribution and their relationship to changes in atmospheric conditions. In this presentation, we show annual …

Effects Of An Inserted Endoscope On Chyme Movement In Small Intestine – A Theoretical Model, V. P. Srivastava Dec 2007

Effects Of An Inserted Endoscope On Chyme Movement In Small Intestine – A Theoretical Model, V. P. Srivastava

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The effects of an inserted endoscope on chyme movement in small intestine (gastrointestinal tract) have been investigated. The flow of chyme is induced by a progressive wave of area contraction along the length of intestinal wall under long wavelength approximation. It is found that the chyme movement is significantly influenced due to the presence of the endoscope. The pressure drop assumes lower values for higher values of the endoscope radius for small flow rates but the property reverses with increasing flow rates. The friction forces at intestinal wall and endoscope possess character similar to the pressure drop for any given …

Fuzzy Efficiency Measure With Fuzzy Production Possibility Set, T. Allahviranloo, F. Hosseinzade Lotfi, M. Adabitabar Firozja Dec 2007

Fuzzy Efficiency Measure With Fuzzy Production Possibility Set, T. Allahviranloo, F. Hosseinzade Lotfi, M. Adabitabar Firozja

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The existing data envelopment analysis (DEA) models for measuring the relative efficiencies of a set of decision making units (DMUs) using various inputs to produce various outputs are limited to crisp data. The notion of fuzziness has been introduced to deal with imprecise data. Fuzzy DEA models are made more powerful for applications. This paper develops the measure of efficiencies in input oriented of DMUs by envelopment form in fuzzy production possibility set (FPPS) with constant return to scale.

Systematic Reviews Of Animal Experiments Demonstrate Poor Human Clinical And Toxicological Utility, Andrew Knight Dec 2007

Systematic Reviews Of Animal Experiments Demonstrate Poor Human Clinical And Toxicological Utility, Andrew Knight

Experimentation Collection

The assumption that animal models are reasonably predictive of human outcomes provides the basis for their widespread use in toxicity testing and in biomedical research aimed at developing cures for human diseases. To investigate the validity of this assumption, the comprehensive Scopus biomedical bibliographic databases were searched for published systematic reviews of the human clinical or toxicological utility of animal experiments. In 20 reviews in which clinical utility was examined, the authors concluded that animal models were either significantly useful in contributing to the development of clinical interventions, or were substantially consistent with clinical outcomes, in only two cases, one …

Review: Steve: The Art Museum Social Tagging Project., Mark Mcbride

Mark F McBride

The Steve Museum is a social tagging project created by volunteers from art museums and galleries. The main goal is to create user generated descriptions for works of art, because we all view, experience, and describe art differently.
