An Efficient Identity-Based Key Exchange Protocol With Kgs Forward Secrecy For Low-Power Devices, Robert W. Zhu, Guomin Yang, Duncan S. Wong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
For an ID-based key exchange (KE) protocol, KGS forward secrecy is about the protection of previously established session keys after the master secret key of the Key Generation Server (KGS) is compromised. This is the strongest notion of forward secrecy that one can provide for an ID-based KE protocol. Among all the comparable protocols, there are only a few of them that provide this level of forward secrecy, and all of these protocols require expensive bilinear pairing operations and map-to-point hash operations that may not be suitable for implementation on low-power devices such as sensors. In this paper, we propose …

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology dramatically increases the ability of the organization to acquire a vast array of data about the location and properties of any entity that can be physically tagged and wirelessly scanned within certain technical limitations. RFID can be applied to a variety of tasks, structures, work systems and contexts along the value chain, including business-to-business logistics, internal operations, business-to-consumer marketing, and after-sales service applications. As industry adoption of RFID increases there is an emerging interest by academic researchers to engage in scholarly investigation to understand how RFID relates to mobility, organizational and systems technologies (MOST). Learning Nonparametric Kernel Matrices From Pairwise Constraints, Steven C. H. Hoi, Rong Jin, Michael R. Lyu
Learning Nonparametric Kernel Matrices From Pairwise Constraints, Steven C. H. Hoi, Rong Jin, Michael R. Lyu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Many kernel learning methods have to assume parametric forms for the target kernel functions, which significantly limits the capability of kernels in fitting diverse patterns. Some kernel learning methods assume the target kernel matrix to be a linear combination of parametric kernel matrices. This assumption again importantly limits the flexibility of the target kernel matrices. The key challenge with nonparametric kernel learning arises from the difficulty in linking the nonparametric kernels to the input patterns. In this paper, we resolve this problem by introducing the graph Laplacian of the observed data as a regularizer when optimizing the kernel matrix with …
Similarity Beyond Distance Measurement, Feng Kang, Rong Jin, Steven C. H. Hoi
Similarity Beyond Distance Measurement, Feng Kang, Rong Jin, Steven C. H. Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
One of the keys issues to content-based image retrieval is the similarity measurement of images. Images are represented as points in the space of low-level visual features and most similarity measures are based on certain distance measurement between these features. Given a distance metric, two images with shorter distance are deemed to more similar than images that are far away. The well-known problem with these similarity measures is the semantic gap, namely two images separated by large distance could share the same semantic content. In this paper, we propose a novel similarity measure of images that goes beyond the distance …

Aerobic Biodegradation Of Fuel Oxygenates, Adam M. Gutshall
Aerobic Biodegradation Of Fuel Oxygenates, Adam M. Gutshall
Theses and Dissertations
Methyl tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE) is the most commonly used fuel oxygenate in the world. Its recalcitrant nature as well as its chemical properties have led to widespread groundwater contamination. Questions regarding its toxicity have spurred a search for viable oxygenate alternatives. Since biodegradability is a key indicator of a chemical’s environmental impact, this research used three different well-known methods, BOD5, respirometry, and GC analysis, to examine the extent and rates of aerobic biodegradation of MTBE along with tert-butyl alcohol (TBA). The common fuel component toluene was added to some of the samples to determine if the presence of …

Dissertations
In this thesis we study the boundedness of a general class of integral operators induced by the kernel functions of Fock spaces. More precisely, for a, b, and c real parameters we study the action of [Special characters omitted.] and [Special characters omitted.] on Lp ([Special characters omitted.] ,dvs ), where dvs ( z ) = [Special characters omitted.] is the Gaussian probability measure on [Special characters omitted.] . We prove that, when p > 1, respectively p = 1, these operators are bounded if and only if p satisfies a quadratic, respectively a linear, inequality. The …

For a connected graph G of order n ≥ 3 and a cyclic ordering sc : v 1, v2,..., vn, v n+1 = v1 of vertices of G, the number d(sc) is defined by d(sc) = i=1n d(vi, vi +1), where d(vi, vi +1) is the distance between vi and vi+1 in G for 1 ≤ i ≤ n. The Hamiltonian number h(G) and upper Hamiltonian number h +(G) of G are defined as h(G) = min{d(sc)} and h+(G) = max{d(sc)}, respectively, where the minimum and maximum are taken over all cyclic orderings s c of vertices of G. For …

Using a newly developed Spatial Heterodyne Spectrometer (SHS), we have obtained the first radial velocity resolved emission-line profiles of diffuse [OII] λ3726 and λ3729 doublet emission from the warm (104 K) ionized component of our Galaxy's interstellar medium (WIM). These [OII] lines are a principal coolant for this widespread, photoionized gas and are a tracer of variations in the gas temperature resulting from unidentified heating processes that appear to be acting within the Galaxy's disk and halo.

Open source software has made inroads into mainstream computing where it was once the territory of software altruists, and the open source culture of technological collegiality and accountability may benefit education as well as industry. This paper describes the Recourse project, which seeks to transform the computer science undergraduate curriculum through teaching methods based on open source principles, values, ethics, and tools. Recourse differs from similar projects by bringing the open source culture into the curriculum comprehensively, systematically, and institutionally. The current state of the project is described, and initial results from a pilot exercise are presented.

Multiscale Mode Dynamics Of A Tethered Membrane, Ras B. Pandey, Kelly L. Anderson, B. L. Farmer
Faculty Publications
Stochastic dynamics of a tethered membrane with a bond-fluctuating coarse-grained Monte Carlo simulation shows, in addition to diffusion, nondiffusive behavior sensitive to the type of membrane, its size, and quality of the solvent. Motion of the membrane’s center node is described by the variation of the mean-square displacement (R2n) with time step (t), i.e., R2n∝t2ν with the exponent ν≃1/8−1∕6 in the short time followed by subdiffusive power laws (i.e., ν∼1∕5, 1∕10) in the intermediate time regimes before reaching diffusion ν=1. The crossover between in-plane wrinkle modes is identified from the segmental (node) motion of the membrane.

Towards A Better Understanding Of The Hydrology Of The Tigris- Euphrates System And Its Marshlands, Christopher K. Jones
Towards A Better Understanding Of The Hydrology Of The Tigris- Euphrates System And Its Marshlands, Christopher K. Jones
Masters Theses
Rising demands for fresh water supplies are leading to water management practices that are altering natural flow systems world-wide. One of the most devastated of these natural systems is the Tigris-Euphrates watershed that over the past three decades has witnessed the construction of over 60 engineering projects that eliminated seasonal flooding, reduced natural flow and dramatically reduced the areal extent (1966: 11000 km2 ; 2002: 750 km2) of the Mesopotamian Marshes downstream. We constructed a continuous (1964 to 1998) catchment-based rainfall runoff model for the entire Tigris-Euphrates watershed (area: one million km2) using the SWAT …

A Time-And-Value Centric Provenance Model And Architecture For Medical Event Streams, Marion Bllount, John Davis, Archan Misra, Daby Sow, Min Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Provenance becomes a critical requirement for healthcare IT infrastructures, especially when pervasive biomedical sensors act as a source of raw medical streams for large-scale, automated clinical decision support systems. Medical and legal requirements will make it obligatory for such systems to answer queries regarding the underlying data samples from which output alerts are derived, the IDs of the processing components used and the privileges of the individuals and software components accessing the medical data. Unfortunately, existing models of either annotation or process based provenance are designed for transaction-oriented systems and do not satisfy the unique requirements for systems processing high-volume, …

Continuous Nearest Neighbor Queries Over Sliding Windows, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Dimitris Papadias
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent research has focused on continuous monitoring of nearest neighbors (NN) in highly dynamic scenarios, where the queries and the data objects move frequently and arbitrarily. All existing methods, however, assume the Euclidean distance metric. In this paper we study k-NN monitoring in road networks, where the distance between a query and a data object is determined by the length of the shortest path connecting them. We propose two methods that can handle arbitrary object and query moving patterns, as well as fluctuations of edge weights. The first one maintains the query results by processing only updates that may invalidate …

Maximizing Broadcast And Multicast Traffic Load Through Link-Rate Diversity In Wireless Mesh Networks, Chun Tung Chou, Bao Hua Liu, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper studies some of the fundamental challenges and opportunities associated with the network-layer broadcast and multicast in a multihop multirate wireless mesh network (WMN). In particular, we focus on exploiting the ability of nodes to perform link-layer broadcasts at different rates (with correspondingly different coverage areas). We first show how, in the broadcast wireless medium, the available capacity at a mesh node for a multicast transmission is not just a function of the aggregate pre-existing traffic load of other interfering nodes, but intricately coupled to the actual (sender, receiver) set and the link-layer rate of each individual transmission. We …

Instance Weighting For Domain Adaptation In Nlp, Jing Jiang, Chengxiang Zhai
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Domain adaptation is an important problem in natural language processing (NLP) due to the lack of labeled data in novel domains. In this paper, we study the domain adaptation problem from the instance weighting per- spective. We formally analyze and charac- terize the domain adaptation problem from a distributional view, and show that there are two distinct needs for adaptation, cor- responding to the different distributions of instances and classification functions in the source and the target domains. We then propose a general instance weighting frame- work for domain adaptation. Our empir- ical results on three NLP tasks show that …

Machine learning, a cornerstone of intelligent systems, has typically been studied in the context of specific tasks, including clustering (unsupervised learning), classification (supervised learning), and control (reinforcement learning). This paper presents a learning architecture within which a universal adaptation mechanism unifies a rich set of traditionally distinct learning paradigms, including learning by matching, learning by association, learning by instruction, and learning by reinforcement. In accordance with the notion of embodied intelligence, such a learning theory provides a computational account of how an autonomous agent may acquire the knowledge of its environment in a real-time, incremental, and continuous manner. Through a …

When a website is suddenly lost without a backup, it may be reconstituted by probing web archives and search engine caches for missing content. In this paper we describe an experiment where we crawled and reconstructed 300 randomly selected websites on a weekly basis for 14 weeks. The reconstructions were performed using our web-repository crawler named Warrick which recovers missing resources from the Web Infrastructure (WI), the collective preservation effort of web archives and search engine caches. We examine several characteristics of the websites over time including birth rate, decay and age of resources. We evaluate the reconstructions when compared …

Virginia Shellfish Aquaculture Situation And Outlook Report : Results Of The 2005-2007 Virginia Shellfish Aquaculture Crop Reporting Survey, Thomas J. Murray, Michael J. Oesterling
Reports
Continued growth of the shellfish aquaculture industry in Virginia has added significant value to the state’s seafood marketplace. Today, watermen continue to harvest both hard clams and oysters from the state’s public resources, albeit at diminished rates. At the same time, Virginia’s watermen-farmers are providing growing quantities of additional quality shellfish to consumers. Following the lead of the hard clam industry, there has been a significant transition to intensive aquaculture of native oysters in recent years. The once extensive oyster planting has disappeared primarily as a result of endemic oyster diseases and increasing wildlife predation of seed oysters. In its …

A series of conjugated materials based on oligomers of the para-phenylene type and oligothiophenes was prepared, and their phosphorescence spectra were recorded at 77 K using a pulsed flash-lamp as a light source and gated detection. The triplet energies of the oligomers were estimated and correlated with their chemical structure. It was found that simple changes in the building block sequence in the thiophene-containing oligomers allowed for tuning the triplet energy from 1.86 to 2.35 eV (530-670 nm). Hypsochromic shifts and little variation of the triplet energy were obtained with increasing length of the pi-system for thiophene end-capped oligomers, contrary …
