Unleaded Drinking Water: Equilibrium Potential Measurements For Monochloramine Disinfectant, Brandi Clark Apr 2007

Unleaded Drinking Water: Equilibrium Potential Measurements For Monochloramine Disinfectant, Brandi Clark

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The strength of monochloramine, NH2CI, as an oxidizing agent can be linked to its effect on Pb levels in drinking water. In this study, the equilibrium potential was measured as a function of pH from pH 8 to 12 and compared to a theoretical plot of formal potentials derived from the Nemst equation. The measured equilibrium potential was consistently about 300 mV more negative than the calculated potential - NH2CI is a weaker oxidizing agent than predicted. When the measured potentials are plotted on a Pourbaix diagram, it is found that NH2CI can oxidize …

Improving The Usability Of Evolutionary Algorithms: Self-Adaptive Semi-Autonomous Democratic Parent Selection, Joshua M. Eads Apr 2007

Improving The Usability Of Evolutionary Algorithms: Self-Adaptive Semi-Autonomous Democratic Parent Selection, Joshua M. Eads

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

One of the primary obstacles to Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) fulfilling their promise as easy to use general-purpose problem solvers is the difficulty of correctly configuring them for specific problems such as to obtain satisfactory performance. This paper introduces the concept of democratic, semi-autonomous parent selection by encoding and evolving population rating operators as in Genetic Programming and shows the potential of extending self-adaptation by pairing mates using an adaptation of the Stable Roommates problem. Replacing the typical general parent selection algorithm with autonomously evolved individual selection parameters has the prospective to bring EAs a step closer to their promise as …

Short Report: Fox Squirrel (Sciurus Niger) Associations With West Nile Virus, J. Jeffrey Root, Paul T. Oesterle, Heather J. Sullivan, Jeffrey S. Hall, Nicole L. Marlenee, Robert G. Mclean, John A. Montenieri, Larry Clark

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Tree squirrels (Sciurus spp.) have been recently shown to be commonly exposed to West Nile virus (WNV). Many characteristics of WNV infections in tree squirrels are unknown. To better understand WNV associations in fox squirrels (S. niger), we conducted mark-recapture sampling (N=72) and radio telemetry to study the longitudinal seroprevalence, seroconversions, and ectoparasites of these animals during 2005–2006 in northern Colorado. Five seroconversions were documented during this study. The majority of seroconversions occurred during the late summer/ fall months. However, one seroconversion was documented over the time period of February to late March 2005. Fleas …

Mean values and differential distributions of event-shape variables have been studied in neutral current deep inelastic scattering using an integrated luminosity of 82.2 pb-1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The kinematic range is 80 < Q2 < 20 480 GeV2 and 0.0024 < x < 0.6, where Q2 is the virtuality of the exchanged boson and x is the Bjorken variable. The data are compared with a model based on a combination of next-to-leading-order QCD calculations with next-to-leading-logarithm corrections and the Dokshitzer-Webber non-perturbative power corrections. The power-correction method provides a reasonable description of the data for all event-shape variables studied. Nevertheless, the lack of consistency of the determination of αs and of the non-perturbative parameter of the model, over(α0, -), suggests the importance of higher-order processes that are not yet included in the model. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Continuous Measurement Of The Energy Eigenstates Of A Nanomechanical Resonator Without A Nondemolition Probe, Kurt Jacobs, Pavel Lougovski, Miles Blencowe Apr 2007

Continuous Measurement Of The Energy Eigenstates Of A Nanomechanical Resonator Without A Nondemolition Probe, Kurt Jacobs, Pavel Lougovski, Miles Blencowe

Dartmouth Scholarship

We show that it is possible to perform a continuous measurement that continually projects a nanoresonator into its energy eigenstates by employing a linear coupling with a two-state system. This technique makes it possible to perform a measurement that exposes the quantum nature of the resonator by coupling it to a Cooper-pair box and a superconducting transmission line resonator.

Generalized Coherent States As Preferred States Of Open Quantum Systems, S Boixo, L Viola, G Ortiz Apr 2007

Generalized Coherent States As Preferred States Of Open Quantum Systems, S Boixo, L Viola, G Ortiz

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigate the connection between quasi-classical (pointer) states and generalized coherent states (GCSs) within an algebraic approach to Markovian quantum systems (including bosons, spins, and fermions). We establish conditions for the GCS set to become most robust by relating the rate of purity loss to an invariant measure of uncertainty derived from quantum Fisher information. We find that, for damped bosonic modes, the stability of canonical coherent states is confirmed in a variety of scenarios, while for systems described by (compact) Lie algebras, stringent symmetry constraints must be obeyed for the GCS set to be preferred. The relationship …

Restoration Of Rivers Used For Timber Floating: Effects On Riparian Plant Diversity, James M. Helfield, Samantha Capon, Christer Nilsson, Roland Jansson, Daniel Palm Apr 2007

Restoration Of Rivers Used For Timber Floating: Effects On Riparian Plant Diversity, James M. Helfield, Samantha Capon, Christer Nilsson, Roland Jansson, Daniel Palm

Environmental Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Fluvial processes such as flooding and sediment deposition play a crucial role in structuring riparian plant communities. In rivers throughout the world, these processes have been altered by channelization and other anthropogenic stresses. Yet despite increasing awareness of the need to restore natural flow regimes for the preservation of riparian biodiversity, few studies have examined the effects of river restoration on riparian ecosystems. In this study, we examined the effects of restoration in the Ume River system, northern Sweden, where tributaries were channelized to facilitate timber floating in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Restoration at these sites involved the …

Episodic Tremor And Slip In The Pacific Northwest, Kenneth C. Creager, Timothy I. Melbourne

Geological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Every 14 months the Pacific Northwest experiences slow slip on a fault that is the equivalent of about a magnitude 6.5 earthquake. While a typical earthquake of this magnitude happens in less than 10 seconds, the duration of these slip events is two to several weeks. The most recent event occurred from January 14 through February 1, 2007.

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The southwestern (SW) part of the Galactic H II region M17 contains an obscured ionization front that is most easily seen at infrared and radio wavelengths. It is nearly edge-on, thus offering an excellent opportunity to study the way in which the gas changes from fully ionized to molecular as radiation from the ionizing stars penetrates into the gas. M17 is also one of the very few H II regions for which the magnetic field strength can be measured in the photodissociation region ( PDR) that forms the interface between the ionized and molecular gas. Here we model an observed …

Passive Shielding In Cuore, F. Bellini, F. Alessandria, E. Andreotti, R. Ardito, T. D. Gutierrez, L Zanotti

Physics

The nature of neutrino mass is one of the friontier problems of fundamental physics. Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (0νDBD) is a powerful tool to investigate the mass hierarchy and possible extensions of the Standard Model. CUORE is a 1‐Ton next generation experiment, made of 1000 Te bolometers, aiming at reaching a background of 0.01 (possibly 0.001) counts keV−1kg−1y−1 and therefore a mass sensitivity of few tens of meV The background contribution due to environmental neutrons, muon‐induced neutrons in the shieldings and external gamma is discussed.

An Isotropic Metric, Joseph D. Rudmin Apr 2007

An Isotropic Metric, Joseph D. Rudmin

Virginia Journal of Science

An isotropic metric for a black hole and a better vacuum condition \nabla^2 V_G =0 are presented which yield distinct terms for the energy densities of ordinary matter and gravitational fields in the Einstein tensor (G^44 =-g^2 (2\nabla^2 V_G +(\nabla V_G)^2)). This model resolves an inconsistency between electromagnetism and gravity in the calculation of field energy. Resolution of this inconsistency suggests a slight modification of the Einstein equation to gG^\mu\nu = 8\pi G T^\mu\nu.
